Attempting to root my Droid X for the first time and have encountered a major complication. My PCs will not recognize my ADB interface.
So I started with NOOBs walk through and downloaded the 4.6 moto drivers. Installed the drivers. Followed the root directions for installing the SDK and updating it. Go to the point with typing "adb devices" at the command prompt and no devices are listed. I went into my DX --> Settings --> Applications --> turned on USB DEBUGGING. This now prompts me for additional drivers. Nothing works or is recognized as drivers for the ADB. I've tried the USB Driver_TI.zip, the USB_Driver_3.4.6_patch_ for HG.zip, and using the google drivers from the sdk/extras folder. No luck.
With debug turned on I have the device showing with an exclamation mark in my device manager. I've tried manually pointing the device to all of the drivers mentioned above with no luck. I've tried this on a 2nd XP machine with no luck. Same issue.
My droid X is about 2 weeks old. MB810 from Verizon.
May I ask.... why not just download Z4 Root and press "root"? If all you are wanting to do is root the phone.

I agree z4 is the easiest method for the x. To use adb you need the android sdk package,correct drivers,and you need to edit the system environment path to include the folders you adb files are in

Again I would recommend using z4root. It's very easy to do and requires no drivers on your computer
I struggled with this on my XP box when first trying to root my Desire HD. I eventually accidentally found the solution:
Install HTC Sync before connecting the phone to the PC.

Oops! Must read thread title more carefully in the future.
I've had ADB working successfully in the past, but now nothing is listed after an "adb devices" command, and a "device not found" error for other commands. I was on Royal Ginger 2, and just updated to the latest CM7 nightly - then wanted to use ADB to tweak a few things and found out something was wrong. What else do I need to do to get adb to recognize my device?
I haven't changed anything on my laptop, which is Win7 64bit, and I've updated everything in SDK Manager. Device Manager on the laptop shows T-Mobile myTouch4g USB Device under Disk drives on the Device Manager, and I believe I have the latest mt4g drivers installed. I'm connecting via USB with debugging turned on, and without turning on USB storage.
Any ideas?
I was finally able to get adb to recognize my device again. FYI, I tried a few different things, but I think what finally got it working was tweaking the *.inf file in the usb_driver folder in SDK, the uninstalling/reinstalling the drivers - as outlined here:

I am using my laptop for ADB currently, but I want to know if it is possible to run ADB through windows in a Virtual Machine? I have gotten to where I have ADB running and the VM reconizeds the phone but as soon as I type,

There is no response. Side note: I am using VMware and am running Tvall's CM7 on my phone.
Edit: solved was a driver issue
adb works when drivers for adb were installed
did you install drivers from Android SDK Tools?
at second you need turn usb debugging on (settings/applications/development)

Yes I know this. The virtual machine knows the device is there(ADB drivers are installed) but in cmd it doesn't work. USB debugging is on, another option is the wireless ADB from CM7, but I have no idea how that works. Thanks for the help.

When connecting phone through usb debugging there is 'Android USB Devices' section in Device Manager (My Computer / Manage / System Tools / Device Manager). Do you have this section while connecting?
Wireless adb application establishes connection via custom port and adb can use this port to communicate with phone.

In device Manager it has "Android Composite ADB Interface" and a "HTC Android Device" My VM connects to HTC Android device, not letting me connect to it in ADB. Before I connect my device and before it installed the drivers I installed the Google driver package from AndroidSDK. Thanks for your help.
How did you fix it?

So how did you end up fixing this? I want to connect my phone to the VM.
This is happening to me right now. I have a VM Windows 7, it can detect a "HTC Android Device" but the platform-tool command line cant detect my phone. Even with ADB USB drivers, platform-tools, as well as HTC-sync installed.
How did you fix it? Please tell me

I uninstalled all the drivers (with USBdeview) and instead of installing with the Google Driver I used the HTC one for MyTouch 3G. I think I installed the drivers before I plugged in the phone. And also what software are you using to run your VM?

I am using Oracle VM Virtualbox. Doing VM Windows 7 under Ubuntu 11.10.
I have been trying a few times in the VM Windows 7. I tried the lastest HTC Sync 3.0.0.0 as well as the older version 2.0.3.3 that worked when I was using full Windows 7.
But in VM, nothing works
The VM win 7 can detect a USB Composite Device, but it cant find the correct driver.

Oh my god!! hopefully you still havent read this post yet because I just got it working!
In the settings of the VM, theres an option to enable USB 2.0
But to enable that, we must install the Oracle VM VirtualBox Extension Pack
It works!

Not until you tell me about your VM
I want to know that because at the moment the transfering and intallation of APK files in Oracle VM VirtualBox is utterly slow (comparing with my old Win7 days), I am interested in other alternative VM which might be faster.
I see you mentioned VMware in you first post, I went to their website (link) but I see a lot different products... can you tell me which one you used, can you please tell me more about your VM?

I personally use Workstation. But for me VMware is alot faster than Oracle VM VirtualBox. Glad I could help
adb driver won't connect
I'm running windows parrallel on my mac. On the windows side I have the samsung drivers downloaded but when I go to root my phone the command line says doesn't recognize. Anyone know away I can get drivers to recognize phone when running virtual on a mac?
I am trying to connect my Nexus 4 to my PC and use the ADB commands. I have the following problems:
ADB driver is installed and "USB Debugging" turned on the Nexus 4. Device shows up on Device Manager, however "adb devices" does not list the device and unable to communicate with the attached device.
The Nexus drive, regardless of MTP or PTP disappears from Windows Explorer when "USB Debugging" is turned on, Turning off "USB Debugging" brings back the drive.
USBView shows the device with a RED light, but it appears working on Device Manager.
I do not have this problem with my other laptop and desktop.
Using Windows 7 x64 Ultimate and Nexus 4 - Stock 4.2.2

I had sort of the same problem, try uninstalling the driver in device manager, then unplug and replug your USB. Then when you plugged in the USB go to device manager and right click on the device and click scan for hardware changes. See if that works.
I'm not sure if this is a problem caused by windows update or the new updated SDK, but it has been a big problem for me.

I tried your suggestion but it did not solve the problem. After re-plugging the USB, Windows listed the device as "Nexus 4" and did not find any drivers for it. I manually installed the Naked Drivers (proven to work on my laptop and desktop) but still facing the same problem
I really do not want to reinstall Windows!

OK try right clicking on the the device in device manager and choose update driver, then Browse my computer, then let me pick From a list of devices. After choose have disk on and find the file where your USB drivers are and click next. It may prompt you that windows can't verify the publisher Just click install this driver software anyway.
See if this works.

Try pointing the path to the Google drivers in the android-sdk in device manager and not the naked drivers.

This is what I did and waited for the PC to install the adb drivers.
I plugged the phone in and with the USB plugged in turned it off while holding the volume up and down keys. This made my nexus 4 go into download mode and the PC automatically installed the adb drivers. After I just unplugged and held the power button to restart the device hope this helped.

When you uninstalled what's there now, you did make sure to check the box that will remove the old drivers from your PC?
Just in case, HERE is another source for the drivers.

The device shows up on Device Manager as working but does not work with adb commands. However, fastboot commands work!
I tried the above with the Naked Driver and had the exact result.
If I boot into the bootloader, I am able to run fastboot commands perfectly!
I have already ruled out my USB port as it works perfectly on VMware.
I am thinking my Windows 7 is messed up somehow and re-installation is looking like the only solution :crying:

4.2.2 requires updated adb and fastboot. It looks like you have an older version.
Click on the ota help desk link in my signature. The new version is attached to the first post. Replace the old adb and fastboot files with the new ones. Then try again.

Thanks. I tried version 16.01 and still have this problem.
The problem is whenever I uninstall/install the ADB driver or disconnect/reconnect the USB, **ONLY** the "Nexus 4" appears on the Device Manager which I manually install the ADB drivers to. There is not a second "Nexus 4" on the Device Manager for the MTP or PTP.
On my laptop when I remove all drivers and reconnect the USB cable, I always see 2 "Nexus 4" listed on Device Manager. One for the ADB interface and the other for the MTP or PTP.
Please help!

Hi was there any solution to this, as I seem to have the same issue.
I have tried different drivers and MTP & PPP modes as well as loading the PDAnet drivers and software.
Each time now I take care to remove all the drivers and also delete the drivers in all modes (Android running and Bootloader running)!
MTP & PPP load different copies of the drivers.
I can get either "Nexus 4" showing up in the device driver or "Google ADB Interface" or Android ADB interface" according to the driver loaded.
I can see the device when Android is running ie "ABD Devices" gives me the serial number and connected, then I can send an ADB command "adb Reboot-bootloader" the Nexus then reboots into the bootloader screen, the device driver changes to the bootloader driver (installs if not installed) however then I loose connection to the Nexus phone! "ADB Devices" returns none connected.:fingers-crossed:
I also tried unplugging and plugging back in the phone in bootloader mode but do not get adb to see the handset or it to react to commands.
I'm just about ready to try a toolkit to see if I can get past this roadblock!!!
Current computer is Win7-x64
This weekend I will try on a different computer.....Win8-X64

That's because you cant use adb when in boot loader. You use fastboot

When I connected my Nexus7(wifi 8G CM10) to my PC( Win 7) , OS always shows"unknown device".
I tryed to re-install N7 driver in my PC but failed.
I tryed to connect PC at N7 fastboot interface but also failed.
I tryed to change different USB cable with different PC, failed again.
It can charge my N7 when I connect to PC.
Is anybody meet the same question? could you please help me to solve this problem?

install this and then install the drivers. should be easy
You should also uninstall any existing Android 1.0 or Nexus 7 drivers from Device Manager (you can type it in the start menu, or WIN+R and run devmgmt.msc) before moving forward.
Install Nexus 7 windows drivers from Asus site. They release proper drivers for windows 7 and 8 and nobody seems to know about it.
