[Q] Did I just delete my SD card? - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
so I wanted to install a clean build of Android 4.4. on my phone and after some googling i found this.
Okay so this deleted my entire SD card which is quite devastating because thats of course where Android stores its backups and where I store the data that should not be affected by playing around with roms like recorded photos etc.
First of all, yes, you may laugh at me.
I have two questions.
Is there a way to access deleted data on an SD card (on a hardware level usually only the index of the file system is deleted).
And is this a known problem? I mean I really feel quite stupid now... On Googles site there is only this vague warning which usually indicates that a "factory reset" is performed as in the data partition is deleted but not the sd card.
Note that this operation deletes all user data by default.

And it looks like the script also deleted my custom recovery.

I don't know where to start with this one. There's no nice way of saying it, but this is what happens when one leaps before one looks.
If you would have searched here or asked first, you would have found that flashing the factory image would wipe EVERYTHING!
With that said, there are ways to return to stock without wiping out your sdcard.
As far as getting your files and data from your sdcard, unless you have money to spend for a professional to retrieve them, I would just cut the losses and move on. There might be programs out there that might do what you are asking, I don't know.
No, I'm not laughing at you because I would hate to lose all my stuff, but I am shaking my head.
Lesson learned huh? ??

I forgot, if your bootloader is now locked, and you want to unlock it, your sdcard will be wiped again. There is no way to avoid that as far as I know.

need help: about to smash the phone on the wall

ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
need help. this is quickly going from my favorite phone to a PIECE OF CRAP I WANT TO SMASH ON THE WALL.
there's a thread i made yesterday. short version after rebooting the phone none of the apps in the sd card were accessible, the phone couldn't mount the sd card, and nothing would install in market. i flashed new roms, restored nandroid backups, nothing would fix the issue. finally narrowed it down to some file on the sd card. deleted all the files from the sd card and restored my last good nandroid and got the phone running, just had to re-install my apps.
i've spent all day installing all my apps (200+). everything was working just fine again. until i decide to reboot the phone. and now I'M BACK TO THE SAME ISSUE. none of the sd card apps work, in settings if i try to unmount the sd card i get a FC, switchpro can't change the mount status (says updating status but never changes the icon, so it's either unmounted or mounted, but wont change it), and nothing will install in the market.
i put back my original memory card (that i used yesterday in my testing) and the phone worked fine again. i installed root explorer (was on sd card, now to the phone). put my memory card back.
i am able to browse the sd card with root explorer. gallery sees the images from the sd card. beautiful widgets sees the skin files in the sd card. but the OS wont run any of my apps that are in the sd card and wont let me install anything.
i'm 100% if i delete all the files from the sd card and boot again, everything will work....but what the hell is causing this? i dont have any experimental/alpha apps that would do any damage after being installed. just a few apps and many games.
from my end it feels like there is a file that gets created at one point, that after rebooting the phone makes it so the phone can't mount the sd card, thus not able to install apps, run sd card apps, etc.
please give me some guidance here. i can't use my phone if i can't isntall apps!!!
i got so pissed almost smashed it
i'm using MetroDroid 1.0, rooted (nand too), customized matted blues theme. keep in mind the problem does not go away with a fresh install of the rom, or with a nand restore of cm6....i'm pretty sure it's down to a file issue within the sd card?
There is a file or app being installed on the sd card that is causing the sd card to corrupt.

you really need 200 apps?
****, i'd say therein lies the root of your problems...
have you tried installing each app one at a time, and rebootung after each one? Eventually you'll run into the same issue, but at least then you'll know which app is causing it.

That's a lot of apps to go through to find the culprit.
I would try reformatting your card. Then go about installing your apps again. Besides that I have no idea, could be an app or a retarded lemon of a phone.

Well, yeah, its also a lot of rebooting - its more of a last resort kind of suggestion. To be used right before throwing it at the wall.

well according to titanium backup i ahve about 310 apps installed. i have many games, most of which i play. then i have several live wallpapers, widgets, tools, media players, news apps, messaging apps, etc. i have everything organized with app organizer and it doesnt feel like that many.

that's the thing. yesterday i reformatted in-phone and i also formatted in the computer. then put the files back on (made a backup first) and this happened after installing the apps. i think i rebooted maybe 3 times in the process of installing all the apps today. the last reboot was only to test the theory that on MetroDroid data only works if you reboot with Wi-Fi off. so i really wasn't expecting the whole thing to stop working again!
EDIT: where in the memory card exactly are the app files?

no need for all the pointless swearing. next time post more civil
Unless you have transferred said apps to your SD card they will not show.

really? thank you for your helpful post. i posted a very detailed and civil thread yesterday and where were you with helpful information? nowhere. and where is your helpful information now? nowhere. so why even come in the thread if you're not going to help?
@toast - thanks for editing the OP. i dont usually make the pissed off kind of threads but this time it served its purpose. the last two days i had a very well written, detailed thread explaining everything asking for help. i renamed it several times. bumped it 2-3 times. all i got was two responses. i post this one with profanity in the title and look at how many answers already. some of which seem to be pointing me somewhere right hopefully!
it's very frustrating to see picture threads and mod threads get useful (and useless) comments every minute and threads asking for help (i've seen this happen with my own threads in the past and many others) get ignored. specially considering by the time I get to ask for help i've spent hours trying to fix it on my own and researching before asking here.

VOODOOTRIP i put back most of the files that were in the memory card prior to reformatting it. anyways i installed all the apps again today after that and haven't reformatted yet (what's the point?) so the apps are in the sd card. just need to figure out how to get the phone to access the card!
EDIT: i renamed all the folders in the sd card (without reformatting or deleting anything) and booted into the phone. was able to mount/unmount the card and install apps from market. so it is a file in there...now to figure out which one!
You can access the card from root exp. or from Astro? ie it's still showing the extension right? When was the last time it was working properly? What rom were you on when it first started happeneing? Have you downloaded any non market apps since then? Are all your roms on current update? You said you have tried both a sense and AOSP rom right?
i was able to narrow it down....it's a file within .androidsecure...so now i have to sort through 131 files in there. but at least there's a light at the end of the tunnel!
with .androidsecure renamed i am able to install apps, mount/unmount. etc. so it's got to be something in there that is loading when the phone loads...i wonder what?
i'll update when i find out in case anyone comes across this problem too.

see info above (quickly....yes, no (astro is in sd card), about three days ago, MetroDroid, since then couldn't download/install anything, everything is updated, tried both CM6.0 and this rom. but see above. since problem is a file in the .androidsecure folder, whether i was wiping and going to cm6 or back to sense that file wouldn't be modified by the recovery wipe correct?
I know the problem its the 200 apps or one app not getting along with another app. You are the first person that I have come across that has that many apps 200+ apps is a crazy amount of apps.

well there are 131 asec files in that folder. so at least 131 apps + the ones on the phone memory.
but why the surprise with the amount of apps? isn't that why we get 16gb and 32gb memory cards?
the problem file was
se.nena.nenamark1-1.asec
for the benchmark NenaMark
that was the last app i had installed before i overclocked my phone into rebooting. and that's when the problems starting. hindsight is always 20/20
new development. i installed another app and rebooted and the same error happened. NenaMark was off from the android_secure folder but i was back to 131 files. i removed some other apps and booted again and everything is fine. so it looks like 130 .asec files are the limit? at 131 files I get the same problem?
moved 130 of the 131 files back and the phone ran fine. put that one file in, and problems came back. removed the file and all is well again.
I was having problems with my phone and once I accidents ran a check disk via win 7 it found and fixed some corruption, also my symptoms went away. In fact even my video recordings loom much better.

Ok so I applied the dead horse kernel... and I read everything but I decided not to backup my internal SD mainly cuz it's a bunch of bull**** on there but after I flashed and lost my photo album on my main page it became apparent all my photos were gone as well...
Is there anyway to recover this data? I was making a photo album of me and my gf and I had a whole crapload of pics on my internal SD that I really need. If anyone can help me out i'd really appreciate it i'm so bummed out now.

Now who's fault is it for not being careful?
No, I don't think you can get it back if its all gone
Well jee golly wiz me I forgot I made a backup before I flashed Bionix a week ago. Score, all I lost was like 4 photos and my apps. Shweetz
Btw, why does that stupid Kernel delete everything..
And i'm a complete noob, can someone explain to me what a Kernel is, ontop of a ROM?
I flashed the Kernel just because I wanted to see what it does... Seems like the phone runs faster??
Flash or Odin a stock kernel. You might recover it.
sorry, they are all gone, maybe if you had them in the external SD there could've been a chance
Oh and do I have to reapply the voodoo lagfix? I disabled it and deleted it? Now how the hell do I reapply it? Or is it reapplied with this Kernel? Ugh so confusing
Gone...there was (is) a wipe warning in the OP. RCFTL...If there is ever a doubt, there is no doubt.
Damnit! Applied deadhorse kernel and everything is gone!
No reason beating a dead horse...
The fact is most likely everything is lost
If you messed up the voodoo (not sure what you did) then just flash back to stock and go from there. in the future, before you start messing with the phone, make a backup....... then play with the phone

Getdataback has saved my in-laws butts many a times. Unfortunatly that particular program fat/ntfs will not understand the rfs file system.
Your best bet is to:
1. DO NOT WRITE ANYTHING THE INTERNAL SD.
2. google some sort of recovery tool to try and get those deleted data back. I personally don't know of any that work with rfs.
3. ???
4. Profit!
Out of curiosity, which file system were you using before?

on-chip data recovery

Hi fellow xda-members,
I've already posted this in the One XL section, but I realized it is a more generic problem/more generic technical question.
Thats why I post this again to maybe reach the real experienced guys from xda whom maybe know an answer to my specific question.
Ive summarized the most important points to not double-post the question.
I recently wiped my One XL 32GB with the HBOOT Factory Reset,
didnt know that it wipes the internal storage aswell...
Needless to say that I work with the phone and the data is priceless...
I already piped the whole block device(mmcblk0) via netcat and dd,
opened it with a hex editor and found out the whole fat-partition is nulled.
From what I know and heard, the only way to really secure delete any storage device
is to overwrite the data several(Mostly heared 7 times) times to avoid unwanted recovery.
The Partition wasnt formatted and neither mounted yet, there should be no changes made from android since the wipe.
If you take that into account, there's a hope to recover the data.
Does someone have experience with jtag raw data recovery?
Is there any way to gather other/deeper data with jtag?
Thanks for all replys
criestr
Its possible that the external storage is on a second MMC device.

Thank you very much for everyone who took the time and effort to read the thread and answer my question. I appreciate it a lot.
HI there, i think you should try and grab an image for 935F from sammobile and restore with ODIN? This should restore the device into clean state. Not sure if you tried, ie to boot into download mode, and flash via odin?
**Edit, oops, i see you already tried Odin. Hope someone can assist you..
Edit. As far I have learned so far. Every root method etc will decrypt ur sd card. If you format it will be encrypted again. Because the files get reinstalled with the config. Wich can hurt allot. As I stated before try to get the first backup from efs and ur bootloader twrp makes. After make a new one and make sure they are on ur pc. I think u will need 2 freshly flash stock rom with repartition. Since it will relocate the sd card and reformats it. But im not truely sure. If I were you wait for some senior members to confirm.
I had this issue before kinda same as yours. No os etc. But I always make backups of efs and bootloader and everything else every change I make.
So I bassicly made a fresh flash. Downloaded latest stock firmware from sammobile and converted the 4 files into 1 huge file wich I putted in ap. And putted the normal once in bl and csc etc. Then Putted in hidden image for the repartion and checked reset efs.
The flash took 15 minuts and the bootup about 30 with 3 reboots.
But pls dont try this yourself. I Program whit icepicket multi flashdevice as daily job and write the coding for eepromx chips. Thats the heart of most prints with hidden coding. And controls all hardware. This method worked out for me. But like I said I rather should wait for someone to confirm this.

Thank you all for your answers. I appreciate your help.
Prognosis:
I agree. also think I need a repartition of some sort. Some googling of this issue shows some people use PIT files, or other files to repartition the device.
What I think happened was, since I was using the SD as adoptable storage, it has files that makes it looks like internal storage.
When I reflash the ROM and got it running, the OS and system files were correctly link (or rather installed) in the "real" internal storage. That was how I got my device to run fine.
However, when I use the app "Aparted" to format my SD, it could have mistakenly format my "real" internal storage, thinking it was my SD, since it has similar files structure (or the partition name was messed up somehow) , and this breaks the link of the system to the files, making the system think the files are non-existent.
OR, it could have formatted my real SD, but at this point in time, the system were mistakenly recognizing the SD as its internal storage, thus, showing the internal storage to be non-existent.
Now, the system are non-recognizable by any tools, either by Recovery or by system, saying they are always 0 MB in size, including all partition, system, data, efs, cache.
Assessment:
What I worry about most is since my research, some people said efs is unique to each device, and they are very specific that it is not possible to recreate. So if I lose that partition means I lose the whole thing.
To top it off, I don't even make any back up of the system. Not even the files on my adaptable storage SD.
When I was trying to reflash ROM to rescue my device I have already formatted it with my PC.
:crying:
I don't really know what else I could do. My last hope probably is the Samsung Store. I can only hope this problem is only in software, and it could be fixed. At this point I probably need to pay to get it revived.

Well I didnt lose efs yet using odin with re partition and efs reset. And if you already need to pay. Yes efs is an unique file.

After some more reading, I think my last resort is to perform a "Full Firmware" flash, with options such as NAND erase, PIT file flash and EFS clear.
However, I am not entirely sure what they will do, and if in my device situation they will help fix the issue or make it worse. Information I've found so far on the net are quite vague.
So I guess I will wait until someone who is familiar with this so called "Flash Full Firmware" process to point me in the right direction to move forward. Until then, I will keep searching.

Edit I have typed this and readed it back. There are allot of grammar corrections to make. But I had a shift of 9 hours and due a traffic jam I also had to drive 4 hours. Also im dutch and my keyboard trys to correct stuf to Dutch. Hope you will understand what I wrote. Im just to tired now to correct it haha.
Repartion is ussualy used when you change from a multi csc to a single csc with the open pit file from the csc file. It hold how your mobile provider app instaltion etc etc.
Efs clear will bassicly wipe the cache of that part. It hold the previous versions of your mobile provider allowed things and system apl version. Also the history of previous settings. When you set up the mobile first time with a sim and add your google account there is an option restore previous backup and seetings of accounts amd system app versions of last reset. Wich always be turned on after factory reset. If you tick clear efs in odin it will wipe that. The unique codes in the efs part are not wipeable easily. Only when you really start messing arround with fully system root acces.
When a print is flashed the mainbord it is done with a flash device. In this case the one I have is used by big corporations. Every print has an hardcode. With unique codes.
To acces these or flash a new one you need sich device. Then u also need the right method. From 5 pins to uart usb in this case. Them u need the right port nuber and flash time etc etc etc. Also corporations use those special devices since we can connect different cables mini usb rs245 and so on. Wich give use another layer of protection for people who try to steal our hard code.
To ecplain lets say I made a print and the flash will be on a mini usb. Lets say the cable has 3 wires to the mini usb amd the mino usb has 5 connectors we can connect to. This gives us the oppertunity to lets say we put wire 1 and 2 on connector 3 and wire 3 on connector 1. We have allot of options. Since we can also program eich wire will transfer the data. We even can put resistors on them as a safery check.
That is one of the reasons why its damn hard to read the coding and unlock a new bootloader or efs file to root stuf. It takes allot of time to get it done. And im not sure if great programmers like chainfire do it this way. But it takes them allot of effort and time to deliver us the great rooted software.
The issue is resolved. The solution is updated at the post #1.
Thank you for everyone who read the thread and participated in.

G4 Plus w/ LineageOS stuck at booting screen

So I installed LineageOS about 4 months ago or so and out of nowhere the phone just turned itself off and wouldn't boot, it goes past the motorola screen into the LineageOS booting screen, and it just keeps loading and loading, I can access TWRP, and I tried installing an older version of LineageOS and wiping the cache and dalvik, that seemed to have worked but the home button wouldn't work and some core system thing kept crashing and warning me on the screen and I decided to reboot, and now I'm stuck at the booting screen loading forever again, basically I'm trying to NOT wipe the phone data UNLESS I'm able to backup my apps with titanium backup or something like that; so since I managed to make it boot once maybe it ain't as bad as I see it, so yeah here hoping to get some options to fix it.

With titanium backup its possible to restore data from a nandroid backup.
Did you installed exactly the same rom over the actual one again? Did you tried wipe cache and art?
Make a backup of system, data, boot and save it to your computer just in case.

When the phone got stuck at the loading screen I tried installing an old LineageOS rom, that initiated with the errors I mentioned, and when I did that I wiped the cache and dalvik/art cache as well, and now I've tried deleting them again many times and it doesn't seem to work, and quick question, the nandroid backup is basically doing a backup of what you told me, system, data and boot, right? Would that save all apps and their data, let's say, a progress in a game, or all settings exactly like I left them on an app.
Also I don't know if it's me, but I keep deleting some data from my SD card and it just keeps reappears again, even tho I'm seeing them getting deleted, same with pasting new stuff on my SD card, I'm doing all this thro my PC with ADB, tho pasting and deleting stuff on the internal storage works just fine.
Yes, a nandroid backup from your system/data partition saves all your additional apps with settings.

Yeah it says my SD card is on "Read-only" and can't complete the backup, according to some thread it's a FAT error and I gotta mount the SD card on my PC and fix the error thro windows, but I have no SD card reader, meanwhile I'll wait for other answers until I find an SD card reader.
The issue was most likely caused by updating LineageOS many times over and over again eventually causing a corruption, that and my micro SD dying and just being read only made it worst, so yeah, I'd recommend erasing cache, dalvik and system every few months to update LineageOS, well I wouldn't take this that seriously, since I don't really know that much, but yeah, phone is working just fine now, just installed everything from scratch and google helped me restore my apps.

The isssue you are talking about(sd read only mode). Im facing this problem and have done each and every method possible to give write access to sd card.
Well i can access the data(like can put anything i want in it) but can't modify it(copy, move, delete and even format). I looked for way arounds and tried my own method(even risked the data on sd) but no good comes out of it.
Im using rr and not lineage so we are on different boats in the same river.
If you get any solution pls inform me ans ill try it.

Some sdcards become read only over time, had also 2 of them which had those issues. See reviews on Amazon. It's a known problem of the SD card itself. Try to format your card with pc and check if it's writable again, otherwise it's dead.

Thanks for the concern and yeah i know that it is a problem with sd cards.
The thing i was saying that i literally tried each and every method formatting from pc to even twrp. I even used cmd for it and as a out come non of them work.
Well sd card is not dead. I can move, copy thing in it the problem comes after that. I cant delete or then move from sd card to other location. Its like read only compact disk(it will clear the idea what im talking about). My sd card is working as a read only cd does.

That's what I mean: they become read only. Search on Google.
I had the same issue. I tried reinstalling Linage OS, clearing the cache, etc. But what finally resolved it was clearing the data. So the issue was corrupted data that was keeping the device from booting.
