[Q] time to upgrade - Defy Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I think it's time to move on to another phone can moto x or soni xperia Z1c
After two years I think quarx is one of the best
do not you think it's time to use donated button
I like to know what and primarily of quarx (about phone) and old members
What do you think?

I'm also interested in the Xperia z1 compact. I switched to RAZR m last year, but I'm not too happy with it (especially because I missed out on unlocking the bootloader)
Sony phones are good for custom roms and devs?

Let's get to know each other

Hi to all.
First of all I would like to say sorry to any user I may of offended I did not mean.
Now to a more positive note!
I don't know how many user have the RAZR I or who them users are!
So let get to know the users here and introduce ourselves to this forum!
I'm dj_mol3y_x8 and as you can possibly tell from my previous post I have had some bad times with android starting with a x8(sony ericsson) left on 2.1 so started my experience of custom roms and kernel of which im very grateful to xda and its dev's BIG THANKS.
And from the I started to mod themes. Then move to roms and now my x8 has s3 4.0.4 rom/mod by me and my team mate. So then I got a galaxy Ace (samsung)
And that got 1 update so again me and some other users rebuilt the stock gb os to the look of jb
And now I have my RAZR I and I very happy with it despite my moaning. Once again sorry for that. And from now on you will see a much more positive mol3y.
I hope we can get to know each other a build a good, happy, spam & troll free community which I'm sure will have some good development and developers
All the best

Welcome dude!
Well, I'm Vistaus. I started out with some stupid phones (including an old Motorola), then got a Motorola Razr V6 Maxx in 2007 which is still rocking here as a backup phone! Then I moved to a stupid LG Renoir smartphone in 2009, then to an Sony Ericsson Satio in 2010 and then moved to Android to an HTC Desire in 2010. That one broke after a few months and repair was taking too long so I moved to a Motorola Milestone XT720 by the end of 2010. That one I rocked until summer 2011 when I switched to an HP Pre 3 with webOS. But earlier this year there were firmware problems in The Netherlands making it impossible to call with it and with no updates left I switched back to my Motorola V6 Maxx and finally after summer this year I bought the newly released Motorola Razr i
I also have had a Motorola Xoom in 2011. Didn't like it so my parents use it now. I then bought an HP Touchpad in 2011 and am still rocking it, partly thanks to the community (love webOS!).
I also have had multiple custom ROMS from XDA on my XT720 back in the day and on the Xoom so I'm an experienced tester with it.
Am loving my Razr i and hopefully JB comes soon to our phone!

Well, I'll give this a go then. Hi guys, I'm paco.
I started with a bunch of crappy phones here in Brazil! Then in 2010 I moved to a xperia x10 mini that nearly drove myself crazy! I started to Get to know android a bit And started working with custom roms... After a year thrashing that phone, I moved on to a Motorola Milestone 2 (A953) And liked it for a while. Then at the middle of this year, that phone went to the shop and motorola never gave it back
After I gave up on motorola giving my phone back (and sueing them of course) I bought a xt860, that I hated since no custom rom can be fully done for it due to the locked bootloader. There are some really good devs for this phone now and slowly but surely something is coming together! Now I am anxiously waiting for my razr ia to arrive, So I Thought I could start to Get to know the community and offer myself as a tester!

HTC Touch, Sony Ericsson C905, Nokia N8, HTC Titan, RAZR i.
Those are my last phones I can remember of. I used to be a Windows Phone fanboy until I bought this amazing android phone. I can do so much more than I used to with the Titan.

We have to use our devices and feel ourselves happy ^^
Hi,
I'm Ed from the not so sunny UK!
This is my 3rd Android phone, previously having the HTC Hero (aka G2) and the Samsung Nexus S.
Really like the size, feel and battery life of the Razr i however I did take a bit of backwards step as my Nexus S had jelly bean so I'm looking forward to that update (soon hopefully)
Both previous phones were rooted and a loads of different ROMS tried etc however I have left the razr i rooted for now as can't see much advantage in rooting it yet.
Hi, I'm Miles from the UK. Live in Scotland but originally from the north of England.
This is my fifth Android phone (Motorola Milestone -> HTC Desire Z -> Motorola DEFY -> Motorola XT910 RAZR) and it's not yet in my sticky paws as I only ordered it yesterday.
I was really looking forward to the Nexus 4, but reading about the poor battery life and glass back, made me wonder if it was the right move. Then the launch failure made me think twice. Ironically it was looking at Nexus 4 benchmarks that drew me to the RAZR i, which seemed to have good performance and great battery life. The size was the clincher, as I find my RAZR XT910 just a little too big in the hand and the pocket, but the RAZRi has the same screen, in a smaller package.
Look forward to the Jelly Bean upgrade, but I'm not going to sweat, as ICS seems pretty good with Moto's minimal skin.

Hi,
My name is Ivan, I'm from Slovenia. My previous phones are Motorola MPX200, Samsung Omnia 2, Motorola Defy and Motorola Defy+. Currently I own tablet Toshiba Thrive and Motorola Razr I. As you can see I'm a big fan of Motorola because it was always phone company with broad specter of product and you can really rely on its hardware and system. It has the most advantage development too. I'm not a developer though so unfortunately you can't expect any help regarding system issues from me. I'm more on applications side and I was always trying to get the most possible from every phone. I hope that I can be useful in this forum.

At the moment there are pretty much no ROMs available anyways. You can still root the phone. I am sure that Sony will provide a bootloader unlocking solution that doesn't break the camera soon.

Android kitkat ? Does this include our xplay.I Wish

Hai guys.
I recently found a page on web that android kitkat is going to be updated for most of the xperia phones
i linked it.[/CENTER]
http://au.ibtimes.com/articles/506245/20130916/android-4-kitkat-os-18-smartphones-tablets.htm#.Uj583canqnQ
Android 4.4 KitKat will support more phones and tablets including ones which already aged long ago. Know the HTC, LG, Samsung and Sony Android devices which are eligible to Google's new Android OS.
HTC Smartphones
HTC smartphones are well known for its Sense UI which is virtually lagless compared with other Android devices out there. HTC imparted powerful hardware components and premium materials to promote stability and elegance. Certain HTC phones are qualified to get Android 4.4 KitKat and hopefully the company can push software upgrades to them soon.
1. The One Family including HTC One, HTC One X and HTC One X+
2. New Desire family released in 2013
3. Desire line up including Desire X and Desire V
4. DROID DNA, HTC J and Butterfly
Most of these devices have at least 512 MB of RAM and runs Android 4.1 Jelly Bean OS. Android 4.4 KitKat has been speculated to feature Linux kernel 3.8 for low-memory requirements.
LG Smartphones
Several models from the LG Optimus line are qualified to run Android 4.4 KitKat with at least 512 MB of RAM. Some of these units include:
1. G2
2. Nexus 4
3. Optimus L7, L5 and L3
4. Optimus G and G Pro
5. Optimus VU
LG remains quite if when they are going to push Jelly Bean updates to their smartphones and still unclear when they will announce official KitKat release.
Samsung Galaxy Line
Samsung's vast smartphones and tablets line up are expected to receive Android 4.4 KitKat as well. However, the company seems to stagger updates on their devices due to overpopulation.
1. Galaxy S4 line: Galaxy S4 original, Zoom and Active
2. Galaxy S line: Galaxy S3 and S2
3. Galaxy Note: Note phablets and Note tablets
4. Galaxy Mega 5.8 and 6.3
5. Galaxy Tab: Galaxy Tab 3, Galaxy Tab 2 and Galaxy Tab 1
6. Mid-range devices such as Galaxy Young, Galaxy Fame, Galaxy Mini and Galaxy Ace
Samsung recently decided to skip Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean on Galaxy S3 and instead will push Android 4.3 to save time and effort. The company may also release Android 4.1 Jelly Bean to selected device but it remains unclear which one and when.
Sony Xperia Smartphones
Sony Xperia phones feature combined multimedia applications and Exmor camera sensors with fast processors from Qualcomm. The Japanese tech company is now developing Android 4.3 Jelly Bean for selected Xperia phones which be pushed primarily on the Xperia Z family. Android 4.4 KitKat is expected soon to arrive to the following devices:
1. Xperia Z family: Z original, ZR, ZL, Z Ultra and Z1 Honami
2. Xperia tablet S and tablet Z
3. Xperia mid-range phones: Xperia M, C, SP, L, S, SL, U and many more
Sony mobile devices are commonly equipped with 512 MB of RAM and a single-core Qualcomm processor.
IMHO this isn't going to happen.
As you can see, Sony has never mentioned 2011 Xperia's for Jelly Bean updates, as they were made by Sony and Ericsson and since the partnership has been dissolved I do not think they will update some "dead" phones.

if sony doesn't, Cyanogenmod will
I believe that if possible, Cyanogenmod based on 4.4 will be available, though i have not read the cyanogen wiki / news about this recently.
if its compatible, then it would be nice to have 4.4 on this device.
I use to have an Xperia Play and I'm incredibly doubtful that you will ever get 4.4 even with custom roms. Awesome phone when I had it but it never even had ICS.
Currently have a Galaxy S3 and probably going to get a Xperia Z1 next.
hope it comes true )

OP just adding links to built from source roms as they rollout the official updates and wait for an official CM release.
The guy that mentioned xperia play only had 5 posts (so he's not a developer). I think you confused his broken English thinking he was saying xperia play 4.4 soon, when really he was asking for it to be done soon. It's typical for new members who don't know the rules or what's going on in development for the device. 4.4 isn't coming to XP, at least not until we can get more devs behind it, it's not even being worked on as far I know. I hope that clears things up.

Lack of development?

Right I know it's too early to guess regarding the development of the Z2, but I checked out the Z1 subforum, and I'm unimpressed to be honest.
The Z1 was released September 2013. The HTC M8 was released April this year. The M8 is fast approaching the number of threads/kernels/ROMS.
Why are the Sony devices being left behind? I'm still waiting for my Z2, but I have something in the back of mind telling me the M8 will excel with development and stay updated/refreshed longer.
Any thoughts?
I have an M8 and a Z1 - awaiting my preorder of the Z2.
I'm actually selling the m8 as I actually prefer the Z1 over it. For me I much prefer look and feel and to be fair the only thing that I feel I will miss will be the gestures etc. However I believe some of those will be on the Z2 so no biggie.
The other is the screen as the z1 is inferior in that dept. But most important for me the Z1 pisses all over the M8 camera everyday.
So for me development or not I'm happy with stock and the far superior camera (like I said that is very important to me).
Can't wait to get my Z2.
Sent from my C6903 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
This is something I am worried about too. Doesnt look like many developers / cooks are going for sony devices. M8 and S5 forums are already brimming with kernels / mods / roms (I know z2 is yet to be released worldwide) but there is only a very limited amount available even for z1.
Part fun of being in this community is the development. To be honest, I find it more interesting to follow a device that's an underdog from the beginning. I went and looked in the Z1 development part of XDA and I saw CM11 ,paranoidandroid... Thats enough for me by far. It will be fun to study how Z2 develops.
I have no fear, only joy.
This also bugs me a lot. I currently have HTC desire HD which came with 2.2. So far I have flashed 2.3 4.0.4 4.1 4.2 4.3 and 4.4. Till 4.1 I have flashed both sense and asop roms. Does Z2 will keep up like this?

Lack of need for "development" was one of the reasons why I ordered a Z2.After four years of Samsung on my i9000 and i9300 and the need to root it to remove the bloat, wherafter "enjoying " the "development of CM / PA/ Slimrom etc ,and the frustration of the poor results of this development,
I decided to go for the best phone available atm because Sony stays very close to "stock "android the way I enjoy it on my N7.
Maybe from now on I can only enjoy this beautifull phone without ending up running around in circles as a "flash.a.holic" again.
For those who wish to persist in their "flashing" habits : good luck with it....

Sony plan on releasing a new flagship every 6 months so they will quickly leave you behind in official updates, so really one would hope that they can benefit from ROMs.

Samsung S3 ownwers are left behind on 4.3,their choice : stay on 4.3 or use any of the CM/PA/Slimrom 4.4.2 Roms.
This leads to a phone with the latest android version, the price you have to pay for it: camera malfunction, bluetooth sound stutters and sound issues for heavy gamers are only a few of the problems.I went up and down between 4.3 and 4.4.2 many times and learned my lesson ;better stay on the version thats working properly ( Samsungs Rom )
Sony updates all Z phones to Kitkat in may,so even with a Z of one year old you are not left behind.
Even if Sony leaves me behind at any time in future I will remember the lessons learned....
I'll release an early cm build next week if all goes well

Samsung S3 has the exynos chipset, that makes it harder to develop for, but the kitkat roms on there aren't as buggy as you say, they will most likely be stable by the time Sony finally rolls out their kitkat update to the Z (possibly it's last update ever knowing Sony). I personally hate the idea of buying a Smartphone and in a year it feels ancient and like a thing from the past, I am not rich enough to update my phone so often and most contracts are lasting 2 years. The aftercare you get from Sony is too poor for me personally

@krabappel2548: Might be too early to ask you this question, but doesn't do any harm to ask I guess.
I really can't wait to replace the stock ROM with CM, but on the other hand I wouldn't want to loose functionality that is ROM specific, most importantly camera functions. As far as I understand it is not possible to install the Sony stock camera in another ROM because it comes with a whole framework (which I guess can't be ported?!). In addition to that I'm under the impression that previous versions of the xperia Z shot better pictures in low light with the stock ROM.
Do you know if we're gonna loose the camera app and it's features or is it possible to port it over to CM?
If you could shed some light onto this issue, I would appreciate that.
Hopefully there'll be GP edition of this!

No, stock camera app won't work on cm, but you can always use 3rd party apps
I'm almost finished with device tree for Z2

Well, it seems like the Sony camera is way better than any 3rd party camera out there, that's why I asked. I'll open up a new thread and see where that takes us.
btw. do you think we will be able to backup the TA partition on the Z2? I still haven't rooted my device
I think as Android improves with every iteration, OEMs are slowly learning that simple is good. The stock feature set on the Z2 is fantastic, as in the camera. Less and less people are going to be willing to sacrifice things like the native camera app when the perceived benefit of switching to a custom ROM diminishes.
Personally, the first thing I did when I got my Z2 was install Google Now Launcher for a vanilla Android look and feel, but I wouldn't even consider doing a build of my ROM for this phone at this point in time because the stock features are brilliant a they are.
I don't think lack of development is an indicator of an unsuccessful phone anymore, but rather the opposite.
HTC devices are inherently going to have a lot of development as long as they continue with Sense, because Sense is such a user polarizer.
I think the current state of the factory ROM after .55 update is quite stable with some small issues. I am content with the current ROM. It is snappy, no lag and smooth. No carton-ish icons or effects like the Samsung phones

Aosp coming to sony phones. New life?

Hello all. As you might of heard Sony is now branching out to aosp, so customers can have two roms aosp or skinned. Do you think the z1 will get it as Xperia L has got it. Will it work for locked bootloader that i do not know. Give me your thoughts and opinions about thia new aosp suppoet by sony. Is it the best step for there phones?
No, it will not work on Locked bootloader for sure.
And I think they will not support Z1 once this (or even ever start).

Yeah, we are even still waiting on a bootloader unlock method for the T-Mobile Z1S. The likelihood of that though is slim even.
All i think the kernel needs it to he signed by Sony themselves. Not sure

As i said, sony officialy decline to work on something like this.
How about this ?
For now, only for MSM8974 kernel

Read it carefully. They just talk about unique kernel for every phone that have this platform.
No aosp rom, or something else.
