[Q] Microsd card rooting not working - Nook Color Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi. I've rooted numerous android devices and jailbroken a couple of iPhones, but I am having a really difficult time figuring out the nook color root on a Mac. I've tried several different methods, read dozens of articles, watched several videos, and tried different microsd cards. I really just need someone to help me walk through it.

Working Sdhc's???

I Have read plenty of threads on xda, and searched the htcwiki and have found no conclusive evidence. I have heard that it's only software differences between sd and sdhc and i've heard it's hardware. All I want to see are reports of working sdhc cards on the Wizard and only the wizard, if their are any. If anyone has one to post if they could PLEASE post:
1. Size of card
2. Brand of card
3. Rom
4. S/N (HT618xxxxxxx only 2 letters and 3 numbers)
5. Any registry edits/CAB Files/Hacks/Dlls
I understand some people have strong feelings about this, I only want confirmed working SDHC posts anything else is as useless as the other indecisive threads. If there are no working instances, there should be no posts. Thank you very much, I'm sorry if I come off frustrated but arguing back and forth is useless, only working evidence will prove it to me, if there is none then i am convinced it's a hardware problem.
p.s. If any are found working, where u purchased the card would be great too thanks
p.s.s. I have researched this a little bit, if you have any definitive information on SDHC cards (not 4gb standard SD) for use with the wizard I'd appreciate it
Well, if you will look 2 sub-forums down under the Wizard forum, you will find the topic that you are looking for....2 seconds of searching would have solved your problem.
Here is the link-http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=297324
You see, I did see that post, 2 seconds of reading it would inform you that i have a different question. That post says SDHC does not work, while many will say it does, i'm asking for examples of WORKING SDHC cards, besides that SD cards only go to 2gb. 4 gb SD cards are fake/hacked or non compliant, that's according to www.sdcard.org, the official on these matters. SanDisk doesn't even make them, nor does any other reputable brand. I've done some homework on this one, thanks for trying to help anyways.
Here's my take on it:
The Wizard does not support SDHC.
There are some 4GB cards that are not SDHC but some in-between standard that came out before SDHC was settled on.
Some Wizards support 4GB cards that use this in-between standard.
So the trick will be finding some of those cards and hoping you have one of the Wizards that can support it. I seriously doubt anyone is making 4GB cards that use that in-between standard anymore since SDHC has become a standard.
Personally I think the mini-sd slot on the Wizard is generally flaky. I have to re-insert my card numerous times to get it to read, and there are some 2GB cards that don't read at all, whereas the 1GB cards seem to always work. 2GB is not enough if you're running TomTom (whose maps take up over 1GB).
Sounds like a pretty good take to me. I have a 2 gb card and it seems to work pretty well actually, i wanted something larger so i could use it as my mp3 player as well. I guess i'll try to find a working 4 gig and hope my wizard supports it... Thanks for your input.
Sounds good, if you find one that works, please let me know, I'm very interested! Mine starts with HTC626 which I haven't seen on the other threads (I've seen HTC616 but not HTC626). Good luck!

my DREAMY G1 can't ROOT!! weak SD & usb, bluetooth etc*&$^%$

Thanks for Looking, really desperate.
I can’t root this ^#%@ G1. Basically I can not get necessary rooting files flashed on my G1. I guess the short question is why does my G1 not accept files from my win7 box. Not through the preferred SD card method but, not through wifi, Bluetooth, ADB. Droid explorer, etc, etc. I’ve tried everything , every method …nill.
BUT, otherwise the phone works fine. Internet, phone, G1 crapware, etc. You can assume I’ve tried every thing I can find on the web. But if you want to read details go please do
BACK-ROUND:
After many, many attempts with every recipe and every set of ROMs around, I ‘ve narrowed it down to it not liking the taste of my SD cards…most of the time, For some reason I can do the initial rc29 downgrade but not much more.
1) Connecting with USB cable to PC. android shows up in “devices and printers” and so does its “removable disk (after mounted from phone). However, double clicking, rt click trying to for mat it just gives errors
2) Putting in SD card while up and running returns “unrecognizable media”
3) Now, I can format SD (yes fat 32) on the PC card reader, add files, whatever, put card in phone and turn it on , at least I don’t get an error, but I get no better access to card.
I was just about to physically take the phone apart and see if there was some flotsam, corrosion, a piece of bacon whatever making physical connection. THAN I remembered bluetooth behaves the same way and WI FII won’t connect at all. Seem that indicates something systemic…Radio??
Help Please?!?! I have 2 hamsters, a Swiffer picker-upper, various commemorative plates to trade...(grinn)
PK
BTW:
ATTEMPTS AT REMEDIATION:
Every peripheral works fine on my HTC Tyne
5 different New SD cards three, 4 gig, one 6 gig, one 2 gig different meg cards
SD reformats both quick and full adnaseum
4 different USB cords including brand new top of the line.
Reset to RC29 time and time again (remarkably it is apparently reading the flash drive in this circumstance.

External MicroSD contents disappear!

Sorry if this topic has been covered, but I need a solution for this.
My 32GB Kingston Class 4 MicroSD get either partially wiped or totally wiped out when finishing a transfer och when transfer anything.
Anybody know what the cause may be? Its FAT32 so that is not the case.
Help will be greatly appreciated.
Cheers!
Possibly a bad card. I've run into several flaky 32gb micro-SD cards before, all from different manufacturers. They don't seem to be as reliable as the smaller ones. I would suggest removing the micro-SD card and reformatting it in a computer, PC or Mac. Make sure the allocation size is set to 32KB, and DON'T use quick format.
Alternatively, use SDFormatter to do the format. Then try again.
Just out of curiosity, what brand was that card?
Kingston 32 GB Class 4.
I dont believe its the card, I believe this is a software problem because I had similar problems with my previous 16 one and same thing happened a few times.
I formatted already will see how it works out.

Nope, everytime i put something new and restart the tablet the things i just transfered are gone!
i've had this issue with 2, 4, 16 and 32Gb cards on my archos 101, g-tablet and iconia. 3 different manufacturers, 3 different android variants (not included various updates and roms)
adding .nomedia in the directory seems to stop files from disappearing, but why are they disappearing in the 1st place?

Do you write a text file .nomedia with the txt in the end or without? And do place it in the root of the SD?
Well it seems that this is something that must be fixed quickly by Acer or someone...
Just name a file. No media and place it in directories that you don't want to loose.... or you can do apps like no media manager in the market

Have this same problem. Added the nomedia file but still losing data off the card after reboot. Funny thing is I have afile on the card that survives reboot, and I think it was there before the last update.
Hope this gets fixed with 3.1

That really sucks, that's exactly the same problem the system lets 'some' file be there while other gets erased.
May I ask the size of your MicroSD and brand?
All the best.
Ok guys I think i've fixed the problem!
I have a faint memory of my 16 GB having the same problem before i bricked it and fixed it.
But at the time I was so preoccupied with unbricking it that i didnt think of of any bugs before that.
So, what I just did about 30 min ago is the following, I reflashed the tablet with the same software that I used previously found on this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1101859
And voila! I transfer stuff and restart and they are still there!
And another good thing is that all my stuff is still there, programs and emails.
Hope this helps anybody with this irritating problem.
We shouldnt have to do this everytime we change our External Memory card to a new or another. Hopefully the 3.1 update will fix this.
Dont forget to thank me!
Cheers!
Check that, problem is back.... fcuking hell... irritating...
Missing files?
Hi all.
Please post which version of the system build you are using if you are having this problem.
My Iconia is on 1.141.07 pushed by Acer last month. I have a Sandisk 16 gig and a Transend 32 gig external SD cards, and have had none of these problems, and I switch them back and forth quite often.
Also, I did a full format to Fat32 on the 16 gig, but didn't do anything to the 32 gig. In order to present this problem to Acer/Google we need as much specific data as possible to help them narrow down the culprit.
How many other people are having this problem?

I have the same build as you 1.141.07
I've used Kingston 16 GB Class 4 and am now having trouble with my Kingston 32 GB Class 4
Hope we can get some help quick.
Cheers.
Same experience with a harddisk connected to the Acer. Some files disappeared and i'm sure not deleted them. Keep an eye on it by regulary syncing with a backup-drive. Is there a way to 'save remove' usb data devices like in windows. ?

This problem really sux ass... There must be SOMETHING that can be done to fix... I mean we are not talking about porting another UI for Gods sake...
Safely remove USB drive

The only SURE way to safely remove a USB Drive from the Iconia is to power Down the tablet first.
Hey, you asked. Welcome to boot-up h-e-doublehockysticks.
Quick question..
Are the people having this problem using encription on your Tabs? I have read that strange things occur when encription is turned on.
If so, maybe turn it off and see what happens....
Just a thought.
Added: A fix for encription problems is supposed to be in the 3.1 update, by the way.
Im sorry for the nooby question, but what is encription?
I have a wintec filemate 16gb. While I haven't noticed this exact scenario, I have had files get currupted and later disappeared.
I transfered a bunch of pics and videos from a camera connected via USB to my micro sdcard. Later, I noticed that only 3 of the pics were viewable.. All the rest were there but gallery nor Astro would display them. I can't tell you if it was after a reboot or not that caused them to be currupted. But, they stayed there for weeks (countless reboots). Also, I never pulled the card out of the tablet.
Then one day, I noticed all the pictures (except those 3 good ones) were missing. Still had not ever removed the card.
I've connected several usb drives to the tablet, and never noticed files missing from them.
Not sure if this helps anyone, just wanted to add it to the knowledge base.
Encryption basically 'scrambles' the content on your storage device so it can't be read without authorization (password). It is commonly used for secure data transmission online, but you can go into Honeycomb settings and turn it on for you tablet.
NOT recommended until version 3.1 is released because of a few bugs.

[Q] Hardware to Start Working on My Nook

Dear All,
I have just got a nook color and would like to make the most out of it.
First of all, I am not a developer like many people on this site but just a linux hobbyist, but I like the idea of rooting the nook.
What do I need to get this going? A micro sd card (and which type?) and a micro sd writer to connect to my laptop (btw, I run debian testing on my box) and...once again, which kind?
I will post again once I get what is needed. My only concern is not to end up with an unusable device, but we will talk about this in due time .
Many thanks for your help.
Cheers

There are some posts scattered around, but it's usually recommended to get a Sandisk microSD card. Any class really, but Sandisk's are reported to have the best random access which is what matters. Aside from that, any supported card reader should be good as long as it's the usb kind. Some people have problems using those built-in readers some computers have.
Maybe this post can help you choose the right sd card for you: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=12964262
From my experience and what I've read so far the best working sd cards are those Class 4 and up. Currently I'm using a Sandisk 8gb class 4 and it works perfectly. Hope that info helps you.
If you just need to root your NC, any uSD (1GB is enough) can do the job.
In that case, you need to have the CwM R, latest version should be used (3.2.0.1???)
Then searching for those ManualNooter related threads.
If you want to run CM7 ROM, there are 2 choices
a. Installing to eMMC (internal memory)
b. Booting off uSD (external card)
For b, suggest getting Sandisk brand
If you are installing to the internal memory any card will do. And don't worry about bricking it. It is basically impossible unless you mess with the boot order.

If this post helped you don't forget to say thanks!
The card I link in this post is working wonderfully for me running CM7 off microSD. It even has a microSD reader that works just fine. I'm not a nightly junkie or anything but I update every couple of weeks and have done everything from watch movies to extended periods of angry birds to actually use the nook to read books all with little to no problems.

Samsung Galaxy Tab A SM-T550 and OTG

First of all, I'm from Spain so sorry in advance for my English.
A few weeks ago I received a couple of Samsung Galaxy Tab A SM-T550 brand new from Amazon.es to give them to my sons.
I already have a Galaxy Tab Pro 10.1" and used to watch, while traveling, a collection of MKV files from 1 to 10 gb size stored in a bunch of Samsung Evo's 64 Gb Micro SD's , to do so I have a OTG adapter to read the Micro SD's trough OTG micro USB.
Those cards are formatted in ExFAT due to the limitations of FAT32 for large files.
They work flawlessly in the Tab Pro (Stock 4.4.2) with MXPlayer and the proper codecs (also the AC3-DTS custom codec from XDA).
So I tried to configure my two Tab A to do the same, something that caught my attention was their behavior just out the box, one of them worked as expected with no problem but the other one refuses to read the Micro SD's and tells me to format the device because it's unreadable, I tried to use ES File Explorer Pro and when I try to access the USB it tells me that the program is only compatible with FAT32 and ExFAT, that means that it can see or access the Micro SD formatted in ExFAT.
After resetting to factory defaults a couple of times I keep looking for a reason for the different behavior of both identical tablets, except for the color.
Checked with the internal Micro SD slot and it worked with no problem.
At that time I realize what was the difference between both devices, while unpacking, one of my sons that already has an old tablet, put his Micro SD card with some content inside the tablet so we started doing some tests and realized that if you left the internal bay empty the OTG was used as expected, place the card inside the bay and the problems appear.
One of the S7's was replaced at the shop tree times because, when we show them the problem, the vendor tried to use the aforementioned cards with their showroom test units and, because those units are there to show the device to customers, usually they don't have SD cars in the internal bay, as a result their S7 works fine and mine doesn't so they gave me an other and so... tree times
I tried with a bunch of OTG adapters Micro SD cards and Pen Drives with same result...
We try to reproduce the issue with every Samsung device in the house:
Two S5 (Stock Kit Kat) updated to a Lollipop and then to Android 6.
Two tablets Galaxy Tab A with stock Marshmallow.
One A5 2016 (Stock Lollipop) updated to Android 6.
One Galaxy Tab Pro with stock 4.4.2
Two S7 (SM-G930F) with stock Marshmallow.
One S7 (SM-G935F) with stock Marshmallow.
My conclusion is that every device that came with Android 6 from the factory experienced the same behavior.
I want to show this problem to the community to find if other people can reproduce the same issue.
PS: I also tried to contact Samsung Support Chat, and you can't believe the copy & paste point less answers they post is amazing...
Nobody can reproduce this?

In the thread, you said the Galaxy Tab A's were Marshmallow right?
If you said it was Marshmallow on the two tablets, it's because of Google's new SD Card adoption. One of the two devices has adopted that SD Card as their internal storage probably.
If I helped, hit the Thanks button!

No, just out the box, the only difference was the micro SD in the slot, as I've said, a couple of brand new S7's and one S7 Edge shows exactly the same behavior, moreover, as far as I know, after several errors and testing problems, Samsung have removed the "Google's new SD Card adoption" from their devices (is what I heard), I don't know if may be this situation is related to this policy.
