[Q] Screen Wake Up Lag - Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
I've had this problem since day one, and I know it's been plaguing the whole Galaxy line, but I've read that the Note 3 Snapdragon should not have this problem.
The problem is that once the phone enters deep sleep (which happens about 10 second after the screen is off), when you open the phone using the home button or lock button, it takes about 1-3 seconds for the screen to wake up.
I've read that it could be a problem with the SD-Card, and I took mine out but the lag still exists.
Can someone shed some light on this?

I have the new update. mine is even less than 1 second, but it is not instant. is this considered to be good????

Check your apps that are running in the background also since you have the Poland official you are probably rooted check your cpu frequencies and use cpu spy to see what frequencies are mostly used and if it goes to deep sleep at all...

Using cpu spy, the device is in deep sleep most of the time. regarding the background apps, i froze all the bloatware using titanium and i greenify some apps. I don't see any rouge app running in the background. again, the lag I'm talking about is about 0.5-1 second, is this normal or do I really have a problem?

0.5 sounds normal to me but 1 second a little not so did you greenify system apps too? Did you remove something you shouldn't? How about changing rom?

Also what cpu frequencies are at play here what is your max frequency you are using are you on powersaving mode?

I didn't greenify any system app. I froze some bloatware but the lag was there before I froze them.
I am on power saving mode, my device is 60% of the time in deep sleep, and 23.8% on 300 MHz, other than that it is 2-5% on 1190-1497 MHz.
I thought about changing roms.. do you have any suggestions?

Then everything looks normal to me maybe if you have a live wall paper but we are talking about a monster of a phone here anyway about roms...no man I can't sugest any by the shear fact that at this point everything looks the same to me development is slow so there can't be many changes from rom to rom but if you are looking for something slim go for hal rom

same issue was with NOTE 2:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2208267
maybe it will work on NOTE 3 since it creates a Wakelock to prevent going into deep sleep. Worked for my N2 and battery life as still super fine

Did you recompile or did you use Tasker?

For note 2 there was zip for recovery. I just installed it

Any update here?
The lag I have is random lenght, from one to four five sec. Unacceptable for this grade of a device...

I tried somthing.. ive been searchinh for an answer for a while. I noticed my contacts were displayed on all. I switched it to show just gmail.. I dunno why but it worked... hope this helps..
goto contacts, menu, choose to display, click gmail or just sim?

note on steriods???

i just noticed this morning after unplugging my note that even though my note is going into deep sleep the battery drain is still way too much as compared to the previous day...
i checked cpuspy and at first didn't register anything odd except that it goes into deep sleep.. after a second glance only then i realized that instead of running at 200mhz my note was running at 1000mhz during charge..
has anyone here experienced this before?? although i noticed that it seems to be a lot snappier now
i just can't help but worry what lasting damage it may be doing to the processor... and the fact that even though it goes into deep sleep i'm losing about 5% of juice for every 15-20 mins.
see screenshots below. the first was when i unplugged it from the charger and the second... after going to deep sleep
see screenshots
sorry forgot to attach screenshots

ANy new apps that u installed recently ?
Normally , rogue process is going to call an abnormal battery drain ,,,download some sort of process, app moniter and see which process is running and taking most of the CPU time......My guess is that it has to be one of the apps that you have installed or started which is causing this
That was what I thought initially but I don't remember installing anything these past few days as I just froze a few bloatware and was monitoring the device for any issues.
The last thing I remember changing was some setting under the development concerning background process.
Hmmmn. Maybe I'll put it back and see.

this may be the reason - afair this setting kills each process after you leave it, so in readily you might have ended with a constant loop of processes being closed and then restarted by system

i unchecked the limiting of background process but still the same... cpu is still running at 1000mhz most of the time
i did a hard reset by turning off and pulling the battery for a few minutes... still the same although the note still goes into deep sleep but hardly uses other cpu speeds except for 1000mhz...
i tried freezing some of my apps and games, those which i suspect might have required 1000mhz to run but still the same...
i guess i'll just have to wait and see for a little while if this changes...
i'm now thinking of reverting back to GB... since the battery drain for ICS is such a let down and with this problem... i'll give it a couple more days
what ROM are you running?
anyway something in the governor seems to have changed ,your case seems to be a performance governor.
try installing set cpu and set minimum to 200 ,max to 1400 ,and the governor to "on demand"
should fix things for you

yes it does ,but if you're not rooted then the governor couldn't possibly have changed by you !!
could it be a bug in lp9? I heard that ICS have some battery issues
how long were you running LP9 before noticing this issue?
Well, havent heard it from that rom. Bring it back
Sent from my GT-N7000 using Tapatalk 2
it might be the fault of some rogue app running in background, did you check with betterbatterystats?
Sent from my GT-N7000 using xda premium
I was using lp9 for about 2 Weeks after I started noticing the CPU usage
Couldn't find a fix so I reverted back to rooted lc2 GB
With all the issues with Ics - battery drain, fc's and mmc bug and now this CPU overclocking felt it wasn't worth it.
Now the note is sleeping like a baby. Battery is back to its efficient self. I'm getting 3 days on one full charge.
Will just wait for an update on official Ics.
Appreciate all the help guys.

My G.Note does not use the 1.4Ghz

Hi all, I have been seeing some screenshots that other people post about the sleep issue and there is one major difference from mine.
Note sure why, but my Note does not use the 1.4ghz and 1ghz frequencies. I am running a stock gingerbread unrooted ROM.
Is everything alright? I do play some intensive games on it, so I am not sure why it doesn't use its full power.
Please see the screenshot attached.

Wow you are honestly complaining why your phone doesn't use 1400 MHz and I'm here dreading why my note keeps using 1400 MHz draining my battery
Sent from my GT-N7000 using xda premium
Thats actually a good thing, higher frequencies = greater battery drain. My note also rarely jumps over 800Mhz even though i play intensive games like modern combat 3
Discovered after each reset or power up, Note deep sleep and processor speed unstable.
Mostly mine run on 200Mhz, rarely above 500Mhz.

Do you have System Power Saving mode on? That mode can underclock the processor to save power, so if you're using it try switching it off.
I can see from screen shot power saving mode is enabled. Please disable then it will work.

Yep, that is indeed the problem. The sign for the power saving mode can be seen. Deactivating it should resolve your problem.

Thank you all. I have completely forgot about it, as I have turned it on after I got it.
I'll try turning it off just to see if it will solve the issue.
I have a follow up question. Why does my phone take so long to get into deep sleep? In the morning when I wake up it is consuming about 6mah of power just after I switch the screen on, but usually it uses about 60mah with all but BT turned on.
Is this normal? What values do you get?

There is no provision for accurate mAh readings on Exynos devices - the function simply doesn't exist unlike in HTC phones. Apps like CurrentWidget and Battery Monitor Widget can only estimate mAh usage readings, so that would probably explain your puzzling values.
The way to tell whether your Note is going into deep sleep is to use CPUSpy - the deep sleep timer should go up if you turn the screen off in CPUSpy, wait some time, turn the screen on and refresh from the CPUSpy menu. On Gingerbread, there also is the customary lag coming out of deep sleep between hitting power button and the screen coming on.
Looking at your screenshot, your deep sleep time doesn't look too unusual. Remember also that the phone does not go into Deep Sleep when charging the battery.

i don't think this is correct.. im on rooted GB stock and i see my note clocks 1400 ghz..
this probably depends on what games or apps you use... it just doesn't make any sense to put an O/S that is not designed to use the max cpu speed of the device

[TIP] Increase battery life on JB 4.1.2

Hey guys
We all have been facing a lot of problems regarding Battery life in JB 4.1.2(Updates with the same changelist )
Here's an app i found which provides a great walkaround from the battery drain but with certain restrictions in device performance - DEEP SLEEP BATTERY SAVER
I used this app when im travelling when syncing emails and stuff doesnt really matter or i can do with a 30 min or so sync interval
Here's the link for the original thread on xda
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2030696
How Deep sleep Battery Saver works
Deepsleep battery saver constantly puts the device to deepsleep mode while screen off. During deepsleep mode, Wifi, 3G are turned off, background apps are stopped. Therefore, most apps are not working, including Facebook, Google Service, etc,. It then constantly wakes up in order to download email, sync Facebook status, etc, which is defined by deepsleep frequency and woke up duration
By constantly put device into deepsleep mode, we will save battery life due to no Internet connection, and therefore most of network-based apps, such as Facebook, Gmail will not work.
Caution: during deepsleep mode on, this app may disrupt your normal activities, such as your email notification comes with larger delay.
In advanced mode, you can customize more parameters, including day/night settings, active period, screen timeout, sync strategy, ignored apps, etc,.
Thank me if i helped
Cool thanks! But I'd rather charge my phone in the middle of the day (which I don't have to do even with the battery drain that 4.1.2 brought) than have it turning off radios and not getting calls, messages and notifications. If you disable those, then what's the point of having a totally awesome specked out Note 2! But to each his own ^.^
It does not turn off the radio. Have you even read the thread ? jeezz....stop assuming...
It doesn't turn off the radio, it just delays the sync internal for email, the rest of the functions remain the same
Sent from my GT-N7100 using xda app-developers app
You call that increased battery life?
Sent from my GT-N7100 using xda app-developers app
Yeah that is increased battery life with proper usage, sync was on all the time and i used wifi whenever available with intense screen usage not just low light reading, brightness was around 50-75%
Sent from my GT-N7100 using xda app-developers app
Deep Sleep was/is not a problem on 4.1.2, rather it's the excessive drainage when you are actually using the device, that is lesser screen on time than 4.1.1. Deep Sleep works pretty fine on both ROMs.
'Swyped' from my GT-N7100
It's nice if you think you see a difference, but I think you would have the same effect with juice defender or even tasker with a sync and connectivity schedule. Our device has a much more effective deep sleep than older phones already, so I think it's only the sync schedule that's making an impact.
Unless the app prevents wakelocks for some reason, though that wouldn't really make the phone very stable.
Sent from my GT-N7100 using Tapatalk 2
TIP Increase battery life on JB 4.1.2
You could down the CPU to 1.4 MHz clocks, it is worth 3 hours extra endurance.
I'm beginning to think that wifi is the big drainer. On previous version and previous phones, I would leave wifi on all the time. On 4.1.2 though, I'm finding that 3G is less of a drain with screen off that wifi is.
Which is a bit strange to be honest..
Wifi does seem to be draining a lot of battery life in 4.1.2 as compared to 4.1.1
But there is another thing i noticed, the screen brightness at the lowest setting has dramatically increased from what it was in 4.1.1, i remember a guy checked the max brightness and found it to be around 300% of 4.1.1
Sent from my GT-N7100 using xda app-developers app
Many apps prevent the device going into proper deep sleep and cause partial wakelocks or so, I've tried other apps too like battery saver pro and juice defender but i found this one to be the best

I find that my phone "wakes up" much less often on 3G rather than wifi.
This is surely a bug and I hope Samsung sort it out. This is my first Samsung device after 5 HTC phones stretching back to the WinMo days and 1 iPhone. The uglyness of Touchwiz in comparision to Sense, and the idiotic choice to use the internal storage as a "fake" SDcard are frustrating to say the least. But this uneccessary battery drain on 4.1.2 is a constant pain in the ass and needs to be sorted ASAP.

Lag on the s4

I find myself getting massive lag and stutter on the s4 I dunno if there's something wrong with the device or if everyone else is experiencing the same thing. same, barely getting any battery juice out of it, i find myself constantly charging it throughout my day, also my 4G isn't turned on. also getting performance lagg when going out of apps and playing games. also scrolling lagg on Facebook and typing lagg. hope im not alone! D:
That does seem pretty strange. I haven't really noticed any lag whatsoever (a slight wait when exiting some apps, but i can count the times on one hand), and my battery has been good. I use 4G or wifi all day, syncing is always on, google now, listening to aprox 40 min of music each day, lots of mail, some texts and probably 20-40 mins of talking every day, some videos now and then and so on. Still, i usually have 10-30% left when i go to bed at night.
Idk if you guys have turned down the animations? that can help against the feeling of lag at least, and it speeds up everything no matter what you do, so try it. It's under development or something.
The battery drain i can't explain though. Any apps you guys use a lot? idk, but it seems very different from the juice i've been getting out of this. A lot better than my S3. Probably on par with my Note 2, if not better. That might just be my imagination though. lol
My battery is great especially compariong to the S3, 24 hr usage 2.5 hr screen time 40% left... Every now and then a get a stutter when scrolling through homescreens or in and out of browser or heavy memory apps. But like the above poster so far I can count these times with one hand. I am enjoying this device, its a great update from the S3 especially the battery consumption and speed.
mmm, animations turned to 0.5 and constantly checking facebook and social media, the apps i have i use constantly and install if usefull, except the few lone games i pay for on special that i never touch

i think you guys are snapdragon users of s4.. cant say what's causing you this but my octocore is well almost lagless(only whatsapp lags, cant be s4's problem). battery life well i was previously a gnex user and i can hardly believe that a smartphone experience can get better than this while still having enough juice left).. even on power saving mode its performing flawless. i was just a bit disappointed with not being able to use lockscreen widgets while having a security pattern.. but that can be fixed later on.
My I9505 is excellent as per my comment above... And the other user is also I9505 and he also is having no problems
Start turning off the sensors (Air View, Air Gesture, etc.) then check again if it makes any difference.
When i first got my S4 it lagged a lot with the pre installed firmware (MDC) after updating to MDM the lag was mostly gone, Putting transition time to zero in Dev Options made the Device butterly smooth. No more lag at all

Putting transition time to zero means no more transition animation. Sure cannot detect any animation lag or not.
mine has 0 lag - ive rooted mine, changed a few things here and there, frozen apps i dont/wont use to get the best performance results
As for battery - ive turned off all of the sensors when not using them, keep wifi/4G on constantly and use my phone very regularly throughout the day and i can only burn off about 45% from 5am (wake up, go to the gym, listen to music through my phone for a whole hour in the morning) to when i go to bed at 9pm at night.
I noticed a lag in the spell auto correction. When typing fast , the " blue" suggested word appears with some small delay. And by that time, instead of the suggested word, I put the previous one word that has stayed in blue.... So in order to put the correct one I have to wait for second the suggested word to change/appear in blue... (I use the stock Samsung keyboard)

Turn off animation in developer options. That will speed it up.
If you switch off all animations ' all motions and switch off the home screen

Bluetooth off. WiFi have been off most of the time since I have been away from WiFi signals. Most sensors are off. GPS on. NFC off. Talking about 50 min. Screen on for 1h 11min. No heavy use and battery saving on. Push mail on.
Same kind of use I had with my Galaxy Note 3. SGS5 seems to last about half the time that Note 3 lasted.
Android System and Android OS uses to much of the battery, this can't be normal.
GPS and data connection is active right? It uses the most power of the phone. It drains it like hell to be honest. Than u do have a 2.5 ghz processor in the phone plus a small battery that samsung thought is good enough but it aint.
That all must b it. Try to use without a gps and data connection and check the battery tyming.

Figured it out (I think)
Hi guys i think i MIGHT have figured it out.
Its the bloody wifi, EVEN WHEN TOGGLED off stays on. Annoying as hell and wtf android and Samsung? Its gonna upset a lot of people...
But if you want to read about it look here: http://forums.androidcentral.com/htc-one/344085-wlan-rx-wake.html
Basically to fix the android battery drain, you need to
Go to wifi settings, Advanced, I Keep wifi on during sleep, change to Never, OR when plugged in. (i chose never, T-mo) and Disabled Always allow scanning, and disabled Network notification.
Apparently the kernel keeps waking the device constantly. EVEN if wifi is off, it still turns on.
I will charge to full and test. There is an app called Wakelock according to the screenshot.
Guys try this and tell me if it works. Wifi should still work as usual after changing advanced settings when toggled on off...
I also noticed, even with wifi off, it still shows as enabled on the battery usage as a green bar, so this HAS GOT to be it.
Test this out guys, thank me if it works. Tell me if it works.

You guys do notice that htere is settings -> wifi -> advanced -> "Always allow scanning"
it lets " Let google location service and other applications scan for wi-fi networks, even when wi-fi is off"... pretty sure that's your problem
Unsyncing my Samsung account and turning off all the Samsung apps has drastically increased my battery life. Not fully resolved, but still night and day.
Removing or disabling unwanted apps always help save the battery by stopping the running of background apps.

OH MY GOD
you people go 12 hours and still have 50-60% and you complain?
It just shows me how much my case is worse...
I just got home, 12 hours from charge and I had like 10% and to survive that long I had to turn off location services completely and be on power saving mode the whole day.
something is seriously wrong with my phone's battery.
I hope you guys realise that Android OS and Android System shows high relative to other applications.
So if you leave your phone to sleep, nothing is really running, only Android OS and Android system.
When you actually use your phone for 4 or 5 hours straight you will see Android OS and Android system percentage not to be so high. But really it isn't any lower. It is just lower in relation to screen and other applications you are using.

Turning off Samsung account under apps wouldn't effect getting updates from the phone would it?

I think, this is one of the defects.
I have also had this problem, I have not changed many settings since day 1 of owning this phone - nfc data bluetooth & sync off, Wifi scanning all the time only when charging & drains so much during the night! Last night I was on 42% at 21:50 then at 22:50 it was on 23% then at 23:50 it was on 15% & at that point I put ultra power saver on, which said I would have 1 day of power left.... I checked again at about 01:00 & my phone had run out of battery & shut down! Today I am taking back my phone to the shop & am demanding a new handset, I think I may have just had a faulty S5? Also my phone was getting quite hot at night in my pocket & also had a problem sometimes when powering on with the power button to wake the phone nothing happens & got stuck in ultra power mode a few times & rebooted? Other than this I love the S5 & hope my new handset is perfect? IT BETTER BE? [emoji35]

That's not a such solution.
why people buying a 4G Lte smart phone to block the data settings?
if so, use ultra power saving can stanby for a week.
please, do not answer questions like that.
Maybe kitkat bug? Happens with Skype, Google hangouts etc, etc. needs to be fixed by Samsung http://www.zdnet.com/kitkat-giving-...-says-google-as-it-prepares-a-fix-7000027051/
