Just for fun I thought I'd try out the 4G radio on the EVO while here in St. Louis.
Turns out, it's live!!
Here are some screen shots to prove it!
Had to resize images to fit upload requirements here.

2.1 mbs down?
if so im not impressed... at all
I'm on the edge of the city, and inside, and they haven't announced the launch yet, so who knows how fast it will go. I'll take a drive this afternoon and see if I can get a better signal.

dont get me wrong... its not bad...

Wow, that's awesome news! I live in St. Louis (Southwest Garden area) and I'm getting the Evo next week, but I was hoping I wouldn't have to wait too long before getting 4G. I figured it'd probably be later summer before I'd have it, but if your phone is correct, sounds like they've already started installing it. Hopefully it's just the beginning and the signal will continue to get better.
My only concern, I've read somewhere that some Radio Shacks are setting up WiMax hotspots. Maybe there's a Radio Shack nearby that you're getting the signal from? Just a thought, could be wrong. It'll be interesting to see what happens when you venture out in the city to see if you continue to get the 4G signal and if it improves or gets worse.
Thanks for the update! Please keep us posted!

There is a radio shack about 1.5 miles away. No idea where the signal is coming from. I will take a drive and test later today.

Wow, I wasn't expecting STL to get 4G any time soon. I am so excited that you found this out. I am getting my phone on the 4th, and can't wait to test the speeds. I am in the southwest part of STL, in the boones. So I don't know how well it will work for me.

For some reason I'm getting better speeds on 4G via WiFi hotspot on my Win7 PC. Could be an issue with the speedtest.net app for android or a hardware issue or something.
Anyhow, this has been typical of tests from my PC via 4G hotspot.
4.5mbps
Why oh why must they wait til the 4th to release this phone. All along though, I had a feeling that 4g would be going by yht time the phone was released.
I bet Sprint just started working on it, so it might not be for a while until it's fully live, but it's still exciting that it sounds like it works to an extent. Does the 4G seem much faster than the 3G? Have you by chance tried it near South Kingshighway/Vandeventer/Southwest? or near the Botanical Gardens?
Has anyone tested the Metro East area? Fairview Heights/O'Fallon Area?
hmmmm interesting... I am in STL close downtown and the last couple of days my Hero have seemed much quicker with data transfers. I have no idea if this has anything to do with it but WOW, cool, thanks for the news. I did not expect to hear this at all. I figured it would be some lame excuse why it wasnt hear at the end of June.

From what I have been told, radioshacks just have repeaters in them. They basically just take a weak signal and boost it so it reaches more of the city.
So, WE DO HAVE 4G!!!
God, I can't wait till the 4th, and with the ability to use the sprint hot spot feature for free for a bit, ill be pushing large amounts of data through their network.

I'm interested in that, too, and how 4G will reach a bit farther south, like Belleville.
I'm guessing 4G will blanket the area just fine, but it would be nice to have some actual tests!
4G FULL service near the new River City Casino. Clocked about 3.3Mbps
Detected 4G (low signal) on I-64E at about Hwy 157 in Illinois, but then it dropped and cannot get a signal any further east.
I'm getting 4g signal in my home in Dogtown. That said, speeds aren't much better than the current 3g which is lightning fast on the Evo. I'm getting > 2mbps on it.
Fenton/Gravois Bluffs area is live
*************EDIT************
Sorry for misspeaking for the masses when saying chicagoland area, although my observations for SOME of the area seems to be right, according to this thread it may not be entirely accurate for the entire area. However NWI - Portage and surround areas to the west seem to get this good signal. Sorry guys =(

Hey guys! I can hardly contain myself. Since launch day I was plagued with HORRIBLE cell reception and had the 3g/edge switching issue. New radios always seemed to help little by little as they were rolled out, and eventually I just gave up and went to WiFi at home all the time. Dropped calls and such happened frequently.
The cell signal for the past 3 weeks-ish has been weird and flaky. I've never since January have been able to get more than 800kbs and that was full bars. More times than not it was 300-400kbs.
As of this week.... 1700kbs!!!!!!!!!!!!! Jesus Christ this thing flies now. I've been missing out on a lot. THANK YOU TMOBILE!
If anyone else has some awesome success stories with the N1, post in this thread =)
congrats, hope they upgrade the Las Vegas area soon.
do you get a different icon on the home screen when on HSDPA? Like instead of 3G?

What part of town are you in? I never had any problems with reception in Lincoln Park, through max download speed was around 800 kilobits.
Edit: Just saw that you said Chicagoland..never mind.
im in the chicagoland area. I just got 450kpbs down on my speedtest.
Talcott and Harlem pushing 1300kb myself
I wonder how long it will be before it hits down here in Bloomington/Normal
Although were not that big, we have a lot down here. Illinois State University, Illinois Wesleyan University, State Farm Headquarters, Country Companies, Nestle, Mitsubishi Motors

I was in Roger's Park and my downstream was 800kbps~. I recently moved to River West, (like Grand/Halstead), and my speed was around 2.7mbps. My upstream is the same as before 350kbps~.
In westside Los Angeles, getting around 2.8mbps down. It's damn nice that TMO is stepping it up.
Just checked, I'm getting ~50KB/s down up. Slower than before.
I'm in the western suburbs.
In the Oak Lawn/Alsip area and speeds are the same as always 800kbps is peak but usually slower.
Well I live in Portage area and took the SS in the other day and was fairly consistent on the way. Perhaps I should get this edited. Sorry guys, I could of sworn it was rolled out for the rest of ya.
As for the complaints and such about low speed/choppy speeds. Its night and day. I had it and now I don't, ever. So I can see how big of an ordeal it would have been to straighten out this signal issue from tmobile-google as its not consistent
Where are you in Chicagoland area? I don't notice a difference. I frequent Chicago/Buffalo Grove/Highland Park areas.

Are you on the 2.2 test ROM by chance? The test rom was missing some info in its build.prop file which may leave your phone unoptimized for cellular data.

im on froyo maybe thats why im not seeing hspa+ then
This is the best I've seen in Austin:
Connection Type: Cell
Download: 4921 kbps
Upload: 1500 kbps
Ping: 76 ms
I can consistently get over 3mbs down.
So yesterday I went to the Laker parade. While I was there I was trying to use my 3G connection and it was horrible! It pretty much didn't work which doesn't surprise me because of how many people were there. Then I realized that I had read something about 4G being available in downtown LA. I turned on the 4G connection and BAM I got it! Then I tried doing some internet stuff to see how fast it was and it was very fast and smooth! I love how we have the only 4G phone so I had no problem doing online stuff while I'm sure that everyone else there that did not have our phone was screwed! Love this phone! I also did a speed test and got 3.6 down and 1.0 up. And that's the with the unofficial 4G there! Can't wait for official!
Sweeet!! Where were you?
I was about 15-20 ft away from the fence at the beginning of it.
I wasn't there... what streets were you on? Also how strong was the signal?
Actually I started a custom Google Maps to map out the 4G findings in LA...

I was right next to the Staples Center and honestly don't know what street I was on. The signal seemed to be 1 and sometimes 2 bars. But considering that it's not officially out yet I'm not complaining. I was getting 3.6/1.0 speeds.
Sweeeet, this is all good news
I was in LA last week for E3 (at the Convention Center/Staples Center), and 4G was humming away live and well! I live in Orange County though, so I hope it makes it's way further south sooner than later.
I was out on the 10 freeway today in Los Angeles, the best I was able to get was 3.3up
Hopefully be much faster after final release...

T-Mobile announced more cities now with HSPA+ during the myTouch release. Here's the list of cities:
With its latest expansion, T-Mobile’s HSPA+ footprint now includes Biloxi and Gulfport, Miss.; Denver, Colo.; Huntsville, Ala.; Knoxville, Tenn.; Myrtle Beach, S.C.; Norfolk, Va.; Omaha, Neb.; Phoenix and Tucson, Ariz.; Salt Lake City, Utah; San Francisco, San Jose, Oakland and Sacramento, Calif.; and West Palm Beach, Fla. T-Mobile expects to reach 100 major metropolitan areas and 200 million people in 2010.

Personally, the fact that San Jose is getting is best news ever as I get my phone tomorrow. Hopefully T-Mo expands more, bringing the love to more people around this part of town. Chicago gets all the love all the time!
Nice!
I was told by a rep that it wasn't comin in my area till November but this is really good news.
Thanks for the post...

Huntsville, AL \o/
We deserve it more than any other city in the state
Yes, Huntsville is the place to be in AL.
Too bad I live just outside of Huntsville where I only get edge. I look forward to having faster podcast downloads on the way to work though, once we get HSPA+.

Definitely. Awesome city although I was admittedly hesitant to move to the hick-state initially. Great place to be in the tech business. Hopefully Google brings that lovely fiber here...
I actually am in Hazel Green so only get edge and 3G in certain parts, but most of my phone-using day is in Huntsville area. 3G leaked from Huntsville out to Hazel Green rather quickly and I hope it does the same with HSPA+... Actually, the first day I saw 3G symbol ever was within Hazel Green limits on my way to work with my new G1 one day...

It was the same post as their myTouch HD launch. TMo announced it, see if you can confirm it by reading a press release perhaps.
It's not updated at TMo's official website, but it should be here pretty soon.

Couldnt agree more with the fiber comment, this town(Huntsville) could definitely use it, especially considering the massive growth its experiencing right now.
Ive noticed the HSPA+ for about a week now, I used to get intermittant HSPA connections on my myTouch slide a few weeks back, but nothing solid, however in the last week I had nothing but HSPA connection no matter where I was at, including the freakin psuedo-bunker I work in, which I had problems even getting Edge in before.

Wow, a lot of people here from the area.
Could definitely use the fiber boost. It's an extremely tech/research-oriented city. I understand the places where the work is being done already have commercial connections, but... just give me the fiber!
If you don't already know, we have the same icon for 3G/HSPA/HSPA+ (the 'H') so it will be hard to tell what network you're really on.
about damn time they do Phoenix and Tucson at the same time!!!!!!
Man, I cannot wait. Did a random speed test yesterday and got about 7.6Mbps down on 3G.

Phoenix area has been announced for some time now actually. They have been setting up HSPA+ speeds around my are for the last month now. My N1 has been basicly maxed out at 5-7mbps around my area ^_^
Now I am going to wait tell December to decide on what HSPA+ phone I want =D
Spoke too soon. Still stuck on HSDPA here in Salt Lake City. Guess I still have to wait till November...

Anyone else from South FL (Tri-County Area (Palm beach.Broward/Miami Dade))?
If Miami, Ft lauderdale and West Palm are getting HSPA+, does that mean the less-major cities between them are as well?
Like Deerfield, Boca, Delray, Pompano, etc since they are between these three cities

I went to the Tmobile store in fort union to play with the G2. The phone had some settings messed up so I couldn't access all the internet, but i could open google's home page and do a basic search. It was MUCH fast than my N1.
Norfolk in the house! I went to the Tmobile store on the 30th, when I received my phone, and the reps were surprised at two things:
I had the phone before them and the fact that the H was showing up in my device.
They concluded that the towers were upgraded, but they were just waiting to "flip the switch".

I'm in Holt (South Lansing) and I'm curious too...let me know what you find out! I'm hoping it's a little more widespread than just downtown Lansing, but not thinking it'll be more either.
I'm an East Lansing guy but this is still great news as I'm sure the bubble will eventually expand into East Lansing. I just checked the clear coverage map though and it looks like they are covering the southern part of MSU's campus which is basically all farmland...

Yeh... They are completely missing the actual part of campus where students are and the area where I live (north of campus).
I'm excited to see that its this close. The coverage areas for Grand Rapids have really grown since the initial rollout and hopefully this means something similar will happen for us. I'd love to put this $50 that I've paid (so far) over 5 months to good use....

Yeah, I noticed that...I was thinking the whole East Lansing/Okemos area would be getting all at the same time. I know the Sprint store out by the Meridian Mall said we'd have it within the 1st Quarter, but I just thought they were feeding me bull (and they probably thought they were too). I just was hoping that more of south lansing would be covered (Holt) and it isn't yet really. Hopefully soon! There are some weird parts of subdivisions that have 4G though, which is pretty weird...
EDIT: Also, if this is just the testing phase, once they actually "turn on" the 4G, will it expand and be at a higher signal strength? Just assuming that it would, but I have nothing to base that on...
Yeh, it looked like areas near MLK were covered which I was a little confused about... Doesn't seem like the market for 4g. Most of the stuff west of 127 seems like a waste to me right now unless they are targeting the areas to possibly replace dsl

Confirmed... But with a poor coverage area.
I'll post some pics when I get home. Overall though it was between 3 and 6mbit/sec
