So, I have some cimics books and all of them have these margins around, so it's very hard to read on this small screen. So I used Acrobar to crop this margins, but the Nook still shows them. Or at least it does not show the PDF in fullscreen. How to show it in fullscreen?
ebookdroid pdf reader
ebookdroid (it's a pdf reader) has an autocrop feature to render PDFs without those margins, it's hiding somewhere in the settings, I found it very useful for reading pdf and djvu on my nook
Do you remember where it is hidden? Cause I can't find it on my Nook.
I installed it, but that's not very good solution, cause it doesn't flip pages with buttons, it's scrolls them. Not very good thing. But thanks.

There's a setting for that too: All Settings -> Taps, Swipes... -> Animate Scrolling.
Buttons still does not work. I still have to scroll the pages.

Oh, that's another thing, there are lots of options in the "configure keys" settings, but I don't if any of them work with the nook's hardware keys if you don't remap them to something more conventional. perhaps the "158" and "139" options would work with the lower keys.
I have the right side keys remapped to DPAD_UP and DPAD_DOWN so they work in any pretty much every application, and the left keys remapped to DPAD_LEFT and DPAD_RIGHT which works in the amazon kindle app.

I found the solution to flip it page by page, but damn, this is still to small for comics. I have to buy some 10" ebook reader, or at least 8". I don't know if there are any existing out there.

I have a question on how to make this phone better... I've never used the iPhone really, other than to jailbreak it for my fiancee. Now that I have the Vibrant, I noticed ridiculously difficult it is to place your cursor in a particular spot. You can't use a stylus, there's no "magnifying glass" like the iPhone has, and there are no arrow buttons on the on-screen keyboard (as there was on my HTC Touch Pro 2). Basically, it'll take me 5-6 taps (or more) to get the cursor where I want it.
Is there any app or hack that can fix this?
If you are using samsung keyboard, then keep pressing the "123" button until more controls shows up, theres cursor control.
You can flash or wait for froyo release it comes with a cursor
Thanks to both of you. The 123 option is a PITA, but it's something. Good to know that Froyo is gonna have a cursor. Thank goodness....

I couldn't the 123 option to work. When I press the 123 button, I get four pages of symbols... no directional cursor movements. What am I doing wrong?
If you are using the Swype keyboard, drag your finger from the Swype info button (bottom left corner) to the SYM key (next one to the right). Several cursor control options there, plus a few other handy items.
Also, if you didn't know, dragging from the Swype info button to the "F" key will switch the keyboard into a number keypad.

You need to hold 123, not just click it.

Awesome. Thanks for the help. It's exactly what I needed. Will hold me off until Froyo.
Alternativelly you can use the HTC_IME (which is the HTC keyboard) and set the volume buttons to work as up and down. Pretty handy when you want the cursor to skip a few characters. Though indeed the lack of cursor buttons always visible on the keyboard is kind of irritating especially if you come from an HTC.

I actually went through the process of installing the HTC keyboard, which I loved on my Touch Pro 2. It was laggy as hell and basically unusable. I also did not notice any directional arrows.
I've been meaning to try that keyboard again, since I did the one-touch lag fix. I'll do that right now.
**EDIT**
I can't find the option to use the volume buttons to move the cursor. It's also nowhere near as fast as the Samsung keyboard. Not sure why, but I have to seriously slow down my typing to get it to recognize each key press individually. I was hoping it would be better once I did the lag fix. I guess it's a separate issue...

Hmmm I do not have any lag issues with the keyboard.
Have you tried Calibrating it? That option is in Settings (within the program, activated by long pressing the language toggle key)>Text Input>Calibration tool.
Unfortunatelly, indeed, there are no directional arrows in the layout.
The option to set the volume buttons is in Settings (again, within the keyboard itself)>User Interface>Volume Keys.
EDIT: I don't really have any opinion about the default samsung keyboard as it does not support my language (go figure lol) so I have never used it.
I just got my Droid Pro and I'm loving it. My old Galaxy phone had arrow keys and I'm getting used to not having them on the DP. I can't figure out how to do something that used to be easy on the Galaxy.
In certain apps that have history lists, like the Market app, I could easily modify an existing search term by using the down arrow key to auto-fill it, and then edit the text and search for it. On the DP this doesn't seem possible since I can't arrow down, and if I touch the history item it immediately searches on it, and then I can't edit the search term.
For example, say I search the market for "volume" but don't find anything useful so I need to search again. On my Galaxy I could just type "v" and the history list would show "volume", I click the down arrow once to fill the search box with that and then type " scroll" after that, to search for "volume scroll".
Is there any way to do this on the DP? I've googled a while but its not an easy thing to search for, haven't found anything on how to do this.
Well, after hours of googling and testing, I found some solutions. There are a number of virtual d-pad and trackball apps out there, but I wanted something a little more seamless. I found ButtonRemapper (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=850464) and I used it to remap the Voice key on my DP, and now that key is equivalent to the down-arrow key.
Sigh of happiness. Now I can keep my fingers on the keyboard when filling out forms on a web page, so no more type then touch then type then touch then type. And I can edit history list items like form-fill and such, so I don't have to keep re-typing my searches to modify them.
I still haven't found what I'm really looking for... I'd like a way to dynamically remap hard keys. For example, if I'm in the Market app or a web browser, the volume rocker would get converted into up and down arrow keys. If I'm not in those apps then the volume keys would act normally and adjust the volume.
Forgive me if this has already been answered.
Is there a way to advance a page in say, a web browser? Scrolling down text can be disorientating with E-Ink and it's easy to lose your place.
I use Opera Mobile.
For some insane reason, this application does not support any pageup/pagedown keys.
In Android 2.1 there were no official PU/PD keys.
B&N screwed thing up by assigning the four hard buttons to codes that were used by later Android.
I try to keep things logical by having the four hard buttons assigned to Back, Menu, PU (as in 2.2), PD (as in 2.2).
Other applications (like K9 email) handle the PU/PD fine.
You can experiment with any keycode you want using adb:
Code:
input keyevent 4
That sends a Back.

Hi Renate,
I'm new to the Nook, so please bear with me. I have rooted mine with NookManager and I've looked in the Nook Touch Mod Manager app, but it won't give me the option of assigning any of the hardware keys with PU or PD.
I too like Opera Mobile as a browser, so it's a shame that it won't use these commands. If you can help me with the above, I will try a range of browsers on my Nook to see which one's work with PU and PD commands.
Or is there a software solution like using Button Savior or something similar?
This is the cheat sheet:
Code:
Code B&N 2.1 Android 2.2
---- ------------- --------------
92 LEFT_NEXTPAGE PAGE_UP
93 LEFT_PREVPAGE PAGE_DOWN
94 RIGHT_NEXTPAGE PICTSYMBOLS
95 RIGHT_PREVPAGE SWITCH_CHARSET
Assign whichever hard button you want to go up to "LEFT_NEXTPAGE".
Assign whichever hard button you want to go down to "LEFT_PREVPAGE".
Set your B&N Reader app to use the scenario on the right here:

I must have tried every browser there is and none of them use the PU/PD keys. Ridiculous! Yet Dropbox, GMail and a whole host of other apps use them perfectly.
Maybe the new 1.50 update with its new browser will have PU/PD capabilities? Here's hoping.
Dolphin browser has a setting to allow the volume up down keys to be used to page up and down. If you root with NookManager, Nook Touch Mod Manager allows you to map the hardware keys to volume up & down or you can use the method Renate outlined above. But honestly I can't stand any browser on the NST. They all seem painfully slow and flakey.

Are you sure? For me they don't advance a whole page, they just act as scroll buttons.

Well, another case of our old Android version I suspect. On my other devices Dolphin scrolls a whole page up or down using the volume buttons. I just tested it on the NST. On the NST Dolphin I first have to scroll once with a swipe to get the buttons to work. Then it appears to scroll a half page up and down using the volume buttons instead of a full page. But this is the same scroll amount I get with a swipe in the stock browser, Dolphin and I even tested Boat Browser Mini (it also can be configured to use volume keys for paging). So it seems to be a quirk of our NST devices. But pressing a button twice for a full page scroll doesn't seem like too bad of a workaround.
Any home/menu/back non root required soft key apps used and recommended by anyone?
Would be handy sometimes when using the tablet in different orientations to have the equivalent keys available as floating soft keys.

Button Savior (non root): https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.smart.swkey.nonroot
It doesn't have menu button, but you can customize buttons to some extent, I like to use it with my thumb while docked in bottom right corner.
Taskarou, the best free pie control i could find in the play store. Its set up too complicated out of the box but once you simplify it a bit it works perfect
Also fullscreen! Has a build in pie control
Thanks both, will check those out.
For my rooted NSTG I want to change the actions that tapping the screen invokes; specifically, I want to change screen taps to do the same as the h/w buttons, is this possible?
e.g.
top-left button goes to next page, so a top-left tap would do too.
bottom-left button goes to previous page, so a bottom-left tap would do too.
thanks

Would this be an app-specific mod, or would you want it to override all apps?

I'd be happy if it worked for the Nook default Reader app, but if it could work for other reader apps too that would be interesting to hear about, or even override all apps.

Then this mod would be something up @Renate NST's alley, not mine.
I haven't even looked at those screen (transparent) overlay apps.
They do something tricky by capturing all the touches and forwarding them to the underlying app.
It's easy to have an app itself handle arbitrary touches.
It's been so long since I used the stock reader.
I don't even remember if it has on-screen page turns.
Most (some? all? few?) of the readers today use Adobe's licensed code to render the pages.
How the user interface is implemented on top of that is the main difference between applications.
