[Q] Is my Samsung Note 3 battery Real or Fake? - Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, i am new to this website so if i wrote or did anything wrong i apologise.
I recently purchased a note 3 and seeing as i care about battery life so much, i decided to purchase a spare OEM battery off ebay for £6.90 (winning bid). I know OEM batteries usually cost a lot more than that, but i reckon this battery is real. Since, this is my 4th phone in my lifetime, i am not experienced with phones and batteries in general so i would like to know from your opinion to tell me whether you think this battery is real or fake.
Thank you for reading.

If it appears "天津视界" and it appears "GB/T18287-2000" instead of "GB/T18287-2013" with the date of manufacture later than Sep 15, 2013, it must be fake. (You do not include that side in the photo).
The reason is that in CHINA, the executive standard "执行标准" has been forced set to 2013 in Sep 15.
Again, if your battery weights not 55g or 54g, it must be fake.

hi, thanks for replying. I do not quite understand the first sentence of what you said. "if it appears "天津视界" and it appears "GB/T18287-2000" instead of "GB/T18287-2000" with the date of manufacture later than Sep 15, 2013, it must be fake. (You do not include that side in the photo)."
so what you are saying is that the pictures of the battery that i have uploaded are fake right?

a battery for this price?
have you tested if nfc is working? if not, that might be an indicator, that it's a fake one...
and, try to weigh both kf your batteries - different weigh (more than 1g) = crap battery. I would not thrust it since it may has heating problems, etc. ever heard of exploding batteries?
my advice : you want 10000 mah / veeeery long battery life, buy one from zerolemon
i bought myself an external charger - astro3e from anker, i'd like to recommend it to you.

[Q] Terrible unit, what should I do?

So I had a chance to thoroughly test one of the units from the June batch and I can say I am disappointed.
1. There's a bright dot on the screen. At certain angles it is completely invisible but looking at it dead on it appears as a small bright white dot. Maybe I am moving my head or hands involuntarily but at some angles it appears as a small line, not a dot which leads me to believe that it may be dust. Opinions?
2. There is massive light bleed. Worse than the previous. There's so much light bleed that a 3x2 inch patch on the lower left looks uniformly gray on a black screen. Bleed on all four corners as well and some on the right edges. It's unacceptable now.
3. Sound seems to be balanced this time around, after 3.1 update sounds seemed a bit muted but it appears to be on some videos only, probably the gain on the video and not a TF problem. At least it's balanced left/right.
I think I should send this to Asus as I've exhausted all of the replacements eligible with TigerDirect but I'm not sure how the Asus replacement process will turn out.
In retrospect I should have kept the previous unit. No stuck pixel/dust, not as much light bleed. But now that I'm already at rock bottom (I think), I have no choice other than to do an Asus replacement. I'm willing to live with some minor defects now (even though it shouldn't be this way). I just want an "acceptable unit" and go on with my life. It's a good device but the quality control is worse than anything I've ever had to deal with.
Can anyone give details on what happens with Asus USA service? Turnaround time? What is replaced? What they want from you? I would be forever indebted.
I Heard Turn Around For Asus is Somwhere around 2 Weeks, Which is a long time.
Only thing I've noticed on my tf is the unbalanced sound (right louder than left) which seemed to start after the 3.1 update.
I think you should get a replacement from Asus. I've read some people have convinced Asus to mail them a new unit and then send there's in.

(1) How did you know it was from the 'June' batch? did it have made in June on the box?
(2)Yesterday i noticed a couple of posts about buying latter built versions of the unit, (even though there was nothing wrong with the first build! And today we have people posting how they've miraculously found units from the later build and how they are strangely just as bad
This forum is so full of preditable negative posting crap you could place bets in Vegas!

Your poor punctuation makes it difficult for me to determine who you're talking to. I didn't "miraculously" find a later build unit if you're talking about me. I sent my unit in late May and waited until second week of June for TD to ship a new unit out. TD sold out of them mid-May and I was told late May that they were getting a new shipment in June. This was substantiated by checking the website and noting the sold-out status. I waited from the end of May until the June shipment at which point the website showed stock was now in.
But you're right, how do I really know? Maybe Asus kept a bunch of units from April that they never sold and shipped them out to e-tailers in June just to piss people off or throw us all for a curve. Maybe TD doesn't really sell out of them either, they just mark it as out-of-stock and then they mark it as in-stock 2+ weeks later. This is a conspiracy to control demand.
TD doesn't allow refunds either, only exchanges. That means when a unit is sold it's sold, there's no way for unopened old units to get back into circulation unless Asus sent those to them.
Well that and the serial numbers between the two units show a significant difference if considered sequentially. The SN is of the format BXXAAAXXXXXX on both units where the number noted by X in both locations on the string is greater on unit two. Given that the first unit was purchased in May and came up with the latest update already applied it's safe to say that's not from the first batch and using the first as a reference point the second should be recent.
I don't know why you're offended. I haven't ragged on Asus or about the device itself, nor have I made a thread comparing TF to iPad 2 or Xoom. There's no reason for you to be so defensive about QC issues as if you're a personal guard dog for Asus (your signature is telling). These issues exist (even if this is worse than anything I've experienced). You take this personally because you misinterpret this as some sort of offense against Asus. I love the device but the QC issues are real regardless of how widespread they are. Note that I'm still not saying the device is bad or that Asus is a ****ty company despite what I've gone through.

Eh, it's not that long to me. I've waited since April all time considered. I can wait two weeks.

I'm not offended, i think people posting unsubstantiated negative crap is laughable.
I have to agree with Tubular about Asus QC. I have returned a total of 5 TFs because of massive black light bleeding and speaker issue. I decided to wait for the next batch, and hopefully all the issue will be fixed. Like Tubular, I love the TF. But the build quality is ridiculous. I never had to exchange anything more than once. I hope you will get a decent replacement Tubular. Let me know how it turns out.
What should you do?
first of all you should know that this forum will not be able to help you and anybody else, for that matter, with the hardware issues.
And since the tablet competition is at its peak right now, and since this is a software developing forum, the members with good units will always suspect that there are some hidden intentions.
I can only assume that your post here can have only one purpose, and that's to put some pressure on Asus for better QC in the future, the alternative is to discredit them.

And how should I know that? I'm asking if anyone had experience with Asus USA RMA, that's not going to get me any help on this forum? As in not one person on this forum has had to go through an Asus RMA? Don't make me laugh.

I don't really care if "members with good units will always suspect that there are some hidden intentions", that's called extreme paranoia and may require help by a mental health professional.

Or it could just be that I want some information about what happens in the RMA process. Good god you're dense. Yeah, you're totally right, there's only one reason why I would plunk $400.00 down on to a product and that's so that I hope it comes defective so I can put "pressure on Asus for better QC" (one would assume they should have had better QC in the first place) or "discredit them". You sound like an astroturfer. Even though you think you know everything you don't and your "conclusion" is wrong and horribly askew. You're looking far too deep into it, I'm not looking to pressure anyone or discredit Asus, I'm just looking for some god damn information on an RMA. It doesn't take a rocket scientist either, it's stated on the first post idiot!
As for the rest of you people, I'll keep you guys updated. I called Asus and they would only offer to repair a unit that's barely a week old and they want me to pay return shipping (which is standard fare for everyone who calls in). Now it's time to decide whether I live with this ridiculous lightbleed or send it back to Asus and take a gamble as to whether they might screw it up further. Right now I think I'll send it in, we'll see how this goes.

[Q] Nexus 4 & Google Play Repairs

Hey Guys!
I just wanted to pose a couple of quick questions to anyone that has stumbled upon this thread. I have owned an iPhone 4 for 2 years now and I'm want to be switching to the Nexus 4 on Nov 13th over here in the UK. My worry is that if I buy it off the Play Store, what is the overall experience like when it comes to sending a device for repair? The great thing about my iP4 is that within it's 1 year warranty I could take it back to any store and they'd replace it on the spot.
I know that if my N4 device did develop some issues that the repair process wouldn't be so quick/easy. I was wondering if anyone had any experience with sending a device back to Google Play for repairs?
I am also slightly hesitant about buying the LG phone, I've been burned before by their poor attempt at phones with their Viewty KU990 as their customer service (bought through Phones4U) was pretty shocking so another question would be how reliable should the phone will be as it is built in partnership with Google? and how reliable have LG's flagship phones been recently? I trust that Google wouldn't want to give their Nexus Line a bad name...although the threads on the thermal throttling (possibly down to an unfinished OS/Kernel - final OTA today I am lead to believe to confirm this) and possible poor internal build quality from the XDA tear-down makes me want to hold off on the purchase (even though I am desperate for one as my iPhone is in a really bad way right now!).
Any help would be greatly appreciated! (Also, apologies if this thread is similar to another. If someone could link it to me, that would be fantastic!)
Thanks
- Luke

I bought a nexus 7 from the play store in Australia, and the speaker broke on it on Friday.
I rang up Google Play, and asked them what I should do about it, and within 20 minutes, a new device had been arranged to be shipped to me on Monday, and someone is coming to pick up my broken device on the 22nd.
And i also get a brand new device as a replacement.
Google over here has the best warranty service I have ever experienced
+1 for Google
-1 for Apple
I am not sure about if it's the same in England.
I am planning to get a nexus 4 in a month or two time after I get my Galaxy note 2 next week.
Cheers

Sounds like you had a really good experience, I should imagine that it would be the same over here in the UK Do you know of anyone with similar experiences? Or will I have to send my device off for repair sometimes? I've seen on the Play Store website that if you bought it from Google, you contact Google, but from anywhere else you have to contact LG, which makes me think that it is a very Apple-like repair/replacement scheme, one difference being my device has to be shipped not handed over (which isn't a big issue at all!) and LG are the ones that have to do the repairs while Google deal mostly with replacements as I can imagine the wait for my phone back would be ridiculous!
Again, thank you for your help!
*bump* Any one else got any stories on this topic?

thanks Everyone seems to be giving me this same answer and it was the only gripe I had with buying online!
I just called up play support. they said they send you a NEW phone. then u send your broken one back. don't even need to go to some fruit store. can even do it in pajamas.
Was going to ask the same thing! Pleasantly surprised by the responses here. Just one question .. what do you mean by thermal throttling and poor internal build quality?
Many Thanks

Well, lets start with thermal throttling...
By your comment I don't know if you meant that you didn't know what thermal throttling was or why it would be an issue with this phone but I'll explain both!
Thermal Throttling: Essentially, when a processor starts operating over the recommended safe operating temperatures when completing tasks (such as benchmarks in this case), when this happens the CPU scales itself back to prevent the device from overheating and shutting down. So....the 1.5GHZ S4 Pro in the N4 would scale back from 1.5GHz to 1.2GHz (or whatever the Kernel would have pre-set) when the CPU got to a dangerous temperature and this obviously affects benchmark scores. (I don't mind if the N4 doesn't score top of the tree every time but I'd be slightly wary if the thermal throttling issues could cause potential day-to-day issues)
From some benchmarks seen online (http://www.anandtech.com/show/6425/google-nexus-4-and-nexus-10-review), some people have been suggesting that the slightly lacking synthetic performance of the N4's S4 Pro was due to the phone going into thermal throttling to protect itself from heat damage. The reason for this could simply be that the Kernel/Android 4.2 has not been optimised to the point where it uses the power of the CPU efficiently enough OR the thermal threshold for the S4 Pro has been set too low so it starts to throttle early (the Dual Core S4 is set at a limit of 80 but I've seen rumours that the N4's S4 Pro has been set at 60 degree's on its current kernel). A firmware update (scheduled for today) was supposed to finalise the OS and Kernel builds so we could find out if this was a software issue.
Build Quality Issues:
Don't get me wrong, from what I've seen/read, this device looks stunning and it packs some serious punch on the inside. Although, a recent post on XDA (http://www.xda-developers.com/android/nexus-4-battery-shot-reveals-potential-quality-issues/) showed us a tear-down of the device with potential design issues. I have taken this article with a pinch of salt as I have read contradicting statements on both XDA and Reddit about the tear-down.
By confirming that the device will be an instant replace on discovery of a fault, then I shall be buying one on Nov 13th
If you have any more questions about my explanations above, just feel free to ask and I'll answer them as soon as I can (as long as I can provide an answer!)

I do hope that the issue is fixed, and I am hoping to see it reported with the newest update. If I can manage to sell my One X, I will buy this phone asap - I really cannot believe how cheap this phone is!
My One X has a Tegra 3 processor, which promised speed, but did not deliver - I am hoping the S4 pro chipset will blow it out of the water. However the reviews aren't too keen on performance or battery life. Again I hope this is a firmware issue and that it is reported fixed soon ,

I didn't get you, the FINAL ONE isn't released yet, is it? Then how can anyone play with it? There are only Pre-release models in stores and they have some bugs

I'm pretty sure the press launch events had the final build, one of the videos I recall watching last week had this mentioned by the tech reviewer. I recall him saying they were advised it wasn't final but his opinion was that it was final. Mobicity is shipping the black model of the One to customers on March 1st, this Friday, it seems late to make any changes with production if they're about to start shipping to suppliers in a few days.
I should be getting mine before the end of next week I hope so I'll definitely add my thoughts here.

Sure, any and every thought is welcome. But by pre-release models, I mean their software. I still think there is some fine-tuning left to do
Can somebody confirm what is actual usable memory size showing on Demo unit out of 32GB?
this really isnt necessary -_-

HTC One delayed in several markets, camera sensor manufacturing to blame

KGI Securities reports that HTC has manufacturing issues with the One's voice coil motor (VCM) and compact camera module (CCM) on its UltraPixel camera.
"We believe the production restraints that UltraPixel faces will severely limit HTC One shipments," KGI analyst Kuo Ming-chi said with launch estimates being lowered from 4M units to 800k-1,2M.
This would be, IMO, disastrous for HTC as they need to sell as many Ones as possible before the SIV comes out, but they may not be able to.

the plan was never to sell before the S4 comes out....HTC aiming for its own slice of the smartphone buyers, mainly those who really care more about build quality and the iPhone switchers
you surely don't believe HTC is focusing on selling before the S4 is out, what's up with you guys? HTC is not your neighborhood grocery shop
This does worry me a bit. What concerns me most is not the restricted number of units, it's the implications to the components in the phones that do sell.
If most of the camera sensors that come off the production line are faulty, does that mean that the ones that are judged to be okay are only barely in spec? Will this lead to high failure rates a, few months after purchase, or needing to return 2 or 3 handsets in a row till you get a "good" one? Can you even be sure if it is "good" or that the retailer will acknowledge the problem with the first one as genuine issue? That's the kind of hassle I can do without.

You surely don't believe HTC doesn't wanna sell it's flagships to the masses and make huge profit, and content to almost go bust with the limited buyer range, I mean that's just ridiculous. They didn't contact 185 carriers worldwide to hand out only a handful of handhelds - like with blockbuster movies, smartphone launch is the most important time to sell, and manufacturing problems could have disastrous effects as HTC bets everything on the Beautiful One.
Also worth saying that HTC has form when it comes to shipping less than perfect hardware and not admitting to it. Most HD2's sold in the month or two after launch had an absolutely galloping case of "pink spot" in the camera. After a couple of months they quietly fixed the problem, and subsequent handsets were okay; but they never admitted there had been a problem with the early ones, and never offered to repair or replace them.
If you don't believe me, check the XDA archives - you won't find single poster in the first couple of months after the HD2 launch saying "hey, my camera is fine".

I think you need a slight correction there Hamdir ...
HTC will be selling and shipping well before the G4 comes out .. it's only being ##announced## on 14th March, not released for sale then ...
A bit worrying but at worst will be delayed by week or so for initial batch. Still be getting the htc one rather then S4 or any other smartphone as its the best smartphone out there.
S4 will be probably be selling around mid April at the earliest still one should beat it to the market and hopefully sell millions to give consumers more for their money. Push Samsung to move away from plastic and amoled since Samsung are in the position to produce far superior smartphones then they are at the moment, just means less profit per unit for them.
Take a chill pill and relax man.

It specifically mentions "low yield rates". The "yield" is the percentage of components that come off the production line that aren't faulty. Nearly all electronic components have yields well below 100% even when things are going well: each one is tested when it's finished, and it has to pass certain checks; if not, it's thrown out.
If this story is true then it means that the percentage of camera sensors that are classed as being good enough to use is much smaller than HTC was expecting - in other words that far more of them turn out to be unuseable than they expected. That quite likely means that even the ones which pass the test only barely pass it, which may have implications for reliability or lifespan.

the same can be said about the One X early two months I'm afraid...(and tons of other devices / brands)
Every handset I've had on date of release, first batch I've exchanged due to one issue or another be it hardware or software. That includes Samsung s3, note 2. iPhone 5, hox. So I'm prepared for that, anticipating that and if it doesn't happen then great.

According to this: http://www.androidauthority.com/htc-one-availability-issues-167070/ they're looking at a 20% yield on the camera sensor - that's atrocious.

Yes but what happens if "sir/lady it may take a couple of weeks before we can get you your replace unit"?
Odd really isn't it ... you's expect a CCD with larger pixels to be easier to screen than one with more, smaller ones ... is this just another attempt to undermine by some news agency or stock trader looking for a fast buck ?? After all, if they can depress the HTC stock value ahead of te launch and buy up .. they will make a killing when it rises on the One's success ...
seems some people are starting to receive their units in Europe

Ofcourse i wont be pleased but I've experienced that with Samsung so not a deal breaker.
Btw it's Mr I'm using my own picture in my profile.
iPhone 4/5, iPad3, Sony Xperia S, Asus Nexus 7, HTC One X, Samsung SGS2 and SGS3, LG as well
all had defects in the first months of release
we discussed all this to death on the One X forum early days and now all the panic and drama are behind us
if you want to be an early adopter of a completely new product, be prepared to do some returns
(i went through three for my perfect early One X)

You may have seen that weird symbol from Nothing's last presentation, everyone was expecting to see a smartphone, yet they only showed a SILHOUETTE of their smartphone (alongside a bit of the UI), so, using every hint they gave us, and trying to apply their design system, here's a concept of how the Nothing phone(1) could be like. (plus my ideas regarding the features this phone could have and what their future strategy might be) .
UPDATE 07/06/2022
I apologise for not posting the 2 previous survey forms, but work life took over and you can now find all four surveys in the links at the end of the post.
Last week you had the chance to join our first Beta project with 2 very cool quick surveys. This week we’ve got a more detailed one, with a few Qs around connectivity and personalisation.
The questions are open, but not compulsory. But please try your best to answer all – your feedback is super welcome and will surely help steering our team in the right direction.
Talking about the team, this is what they’ve said after reading all your answers from the first 2 surveys:
"It will take some time to develop dynamic colours and we’re working on it now. Once it’s done, we’ll update it to a new version of the Nothing Launcher and make sure it can be implemented on the final design of Nothing OS.
Regarding the toggle of hiding the search bar, we’ll also try to implement it with high priority in the later version as soon as possible, so please stay tuned."
Get involved in all three surveys, they’re super quick to complete, and your opinion is much valued.

For this survey, I post the pictures HiRes for the icons options:
Nothing (event): Return to Instinct.
This is it, what we have been waiting for is in sight.
The long wait is coming to an end! It's about time, you'll tell me!
We've been riding this hype wave since the official announcement of the Nothing Phone in March (1).
All your ideas, your suspicions, your doubts, everything you could imagine, put it all in the bin and I invite you to remember this date.
Tuesday 12 July 2022 at 16:00 BST* live from London on nothing.tech
To make this event even more exciting, a competition is being organised on the official Discord.
So if you are interested and want to participate, please spread the word on all networks and check on this post here
*British Summer Time (BST)
Behind the scenes of Nothing's hectic life in London.
Here's the latest excellent video released by the Nothing team showing some of the personal lives (especially for Tom and Akis), of how the Nothing machine worked before the official launch of the Phone(1) and you can see some of the core Nothing team moving into their new offices, some of the members as yet unknown, and see the complicity that exists in this anthill.
The surprise when we can see what will be, maybe, the Phone(1) in Carl's hands.
The video can be seen via this link: HERE
Not only does this video show us part of the anthill that is Nothing, but recently, if you're a Londoner, you must have seen posters with a green parrot on them, like this one:
But also on Twitter, parakeets and the green parrot appear with parts of what could be the Phone(1).
Updated:
If you take the latest tweet from the com Nothing team, something should happen tomorrow, Wednesday 15 June.
Unfortunately, I don't have a schedule for this event.
So if you want to know more, I invite you to check the Nothing Discord and Twitter page.
Nothing's instinct revealed!
Yesterday, in post #7, I wrote that something was going on today, Wednesday 15th June.
Well, it's done, early this morning the parrot revealed the back side of what will be the Phone(1) by Nothing.
Here are 2 pictures, and I leave you in reflection mode.
Are you pleasantly, if not really surprised by the design?
Disappointed? Were you expecting something better?
Tell me what you think?
I'm curious to know your first impressions!
It looks sharp, but uninspiring. I guess carl pei really took Apple's design language with the rounded corners and sharp sides. This is a typical candy bar smartphone with wide + ultrawide (my guesses) cameras and a clear back glass. Somehow I expected more... guts? Leaked video showed light-up effects to music is interesting but not really a gamechanger, besides it's existed in my 20-year old pc build lol.
Now it's really gonna come down to price and specs.

Even if this lighting seems obsolete to you now, it really is a change from all those stereotypical smartphones.
What would you like to have changed?
For the moment we have only seen the back of what should be the Phone(1), so we don't know much more!
I'm playing devil's advocate and trying to understand what people want! Some write that it's not great, it's a copy of Apple, etc...others that it doesn't have curved edges; others that it lacks this or that! that Sammies are better! In short, everyone gives answers but without really giving elements that allow the general shape of a smartphone to evolve.
For the price, I think it should be between 500 and 600€, no more, no less.
As for the specs, I think it should be the latest Snapdragon 7 gen 1 (new mobile chip for the mid-high end).
For the rest, I have no idea.

Fair questions. I'll have some of my own takes and I guess what I'm looking for:
Lighting is new, but is just a gimmick, as it does not change the way we'd use the phone.
At best, it can be a notification LED once again.
Front can't really be that different from normal candy bar phones. What it SHOULD have IMO:
Super AMOLED or equivalent display
Available 1440p or better
120hz LTPO 2.0 or better
Hidden front camera (Under display like ZTE, or popup like OP 7s)
Networking should, at minimum, provide:
Dual SIM, with eSIM support optional, in all markets
True global band support, with proper CA Combos, like how Apple (13s and such, not SE) has handled things and even some OnePlus (see https://cacombos.com/device/NE2213)
Performance, obviously depending on the price:
8GB of RAM is minimal, even for midrange these days
128GB of storage is fine to reduce costs, with a
MicroSD slot
3.5mm jack, with a decent DAC
at $700, I would expect them to be capable of SD8+G1, at $600 I would want to at least see SD7G1. No Samsung fabbed anything please.
Software:
Just run stock Android please, moto style of customization on it might be ok but no more skins like OOS, OneUI, etc
Proper 4+ year of dev support with on-time releases. See Essential team pushing out patches before the Pixel team back in the day.
Unlockable bootloader
Proper open-source code releases to enable devs
But again, these are just specs I would want to see on a "flagship killer" for a price of $600-700 USD. None of these really fundamentally changes the way a smartphone works, but could be exciting from a price/performance perspective.

I understand what your thoughts, but if you're honest can you imagine a flagship-killer with almost of yours specs for $600/700 USD. I'm not sure!
I see that you have a OP 10Pro & SGS22U, their are not really cheap! And do you have all the specs you want?
But I'm sure that the S7G1 is a SoC, not SD8+G1
3.5mm, I think not
MicroSD, now it's useless with 128/256 Gb of storage
I suppose 6/8 GB or RAM
Stock Android without majority of bloatware
Bootloader unlocked and open-source
It's just some speculations from me.
If you are not on to the Nothing Discord, can I suggest you to join it, if you want to discuss with some of them and explain your thoughts.
I'm on both, here and Discord.

I go through a lot of phones.
Take ZTE, https://screenrant.com/zte-axon-40-ultra-price-how-to-buy/
It actually has almost everything I want, with a better camera array than what the nothing is showing. The cost is $800 and there are available discounts. The only problem is poor band support in the US and SG8G1 being a Samsung fab chip. If nothing wants to compete, they need to at least be able to beat other competitors, so at $800 it better look as good as ZTE on paper.

Carl hates NFT and all crypt currency. He admitted that during a recent interview. It's his team who came up with this and thinks it can lead to something good. So he agreed to experiment with it.
