[Q] How to use scanner through wifi? - Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I have a all-in-one device from HP which is able to print, copy and scan documents. I'm mostly interested in using the scanner itself. Is there any app that will help me with it? I had a quick look at Play Store but couldn't find anything. I'm using scanner on my Windows 7 PC, which is connected to the same network as the printer. I would love to be able to scan documents and save them on my phone directly.
Any ideas?
Thank you.

And how am I supposed to achieve that?
I don't want to pair with PC because I want to get rid of the PC in a first place.
I scan all my documents as I hate going trough tons of paper, so if I could just turn on my scanner, put the document inside and just take my phone out and transfer it to it - that would be great.

[Q] Any real application or way to hide the files?

Okay. I have some important PDF files that I need to carry in my phone and I really want to keep them private. I have searched in the market for the application to hide the files, but it turns out that all those applications only provides us the way to hide only Pictures and Videos, which is obviously more demanding and so called private data.
My concern is, no matter how I store these documents, Adobe Reader always and always finds them and displays them. I don't know what's wrong with Adobe and why it is searching for all PDF documents in the SD card and displaying it to public.
I have made the following file/folder structures to make the files not to appear in the Adobe Reader, but failed every time. Adobe just find them somehow.
.folder/file.pdf
.folder/.folder1/file.pdf
.file.pdf
.folder/.file.pdf
.folder/.folder1/.file.pdf
I also have tried all above combinations by applying hidden and system attributes to the PDF files and those folders. But as its Linux, I failed.
So I did some research and though I'll just disallow adobe from accessing things, but when I went to security thing, it told me Adobe don't need anything.
Then why it is searching for my PDF files.
There is a way and only way to hide those files from Adobe is to change their extension to XPS ( ), but it isn't feasible and not something I'm looking for.
Kindly assist me. Thanks.
Couldn't you just password protect them?
Although not as convenient you could use a separate micro sd? Or you could use a cloud system like dropbox.
you can use an application like app protector to password protect the adobe reader. though ur files will be displayed in adobe reader but adobe reader itself would require a password\pattern to open.

The files are already secured and there's no way to edit them without knowing the password of those secured documents. And applying password protection to every single file isn't a feasible solution. Though it's a good answer, it's not a solution. Life would have been easier if Adobe would just have allowed users to browse directories and open files instead of listing thousands of PDF files in the system.

Yes, separate micro SD card is not the convenient way as I bough the 16GB card just to have everything in single place. I even dumped my iPod Touch, because I'm considering my Wildfire to all in device. And about dropbox, correct me if I'm wrong, but it needs Internet connection every time you want to see the file, exception of cached file. May be I'm expecting too much, but my provider don't support the 3G in my area, so GPRS internet isn't something I can rely on.

Now that's a solution. I've tried the application just now and it looks promising. Thanks a lot for providing the solution, it's easier to get rid of Adobe instead of hiding files.
after applying the command, like writing . in renaming u have to restart ur cell , nd then ur reader will not find that. without restart it holds the path already so it able to find even u hide them. or dnt want to restart then install e.s security. thats gud

Even after restart, Adobe Reader just finds the files somehow and shows all of them. I'm using the App Protector now and its working fine. But few hours ago found E S Security in the market and installed it on my phone. I still needs to have a look at it. Thanks for the note mate, will be helpful for other applications.
Why Security-Through-Obscurity Won't Work
I'd rather try encrypting the files and/or not use FAT16/32 filesystem as it provides no security whatsoever
Maybe repartition your card to use a ext3/ext4 partition with user rights and encryption if those data are important to you.

Wi-fi file sharing

Hi, how can i transfer files PC>TRANSFORMER or TRANSFORMER>PC via WI-FI?
thanks for answering...
i'm interested two...
also would like toknow if a good upnp soft exit without needing multiple tools like upnplay and moboplayer...
Try AndSMB.
Also if you have a kernel with cifs support, you can use cifs manager to mount your windows shares, so that you can directly open your shared files without copying them.
There are a few ways to do this.
The first is to use SwiFTP. This makes the transformer behave as an FTP server, then you can explore files on it using an ftp client from your computer.
The second is to use your computer as an FTP server and use AndFTP to explore files on your computer to move files onto your tablet.
I use both all the time, and they work really well.
Cheers.
I use ES File Explorer (free from Android Market) on my Transformer (and before that, my GTab).
It supports browsing of FTP and LAN. So as long as you know how to set up shares on your windows PC, you can access those directories from your T.F. and copy / paste / install APK straight from your PC.
or install File Manager HD.
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.rhmsoft.fm.hd&feature=search_result
and you can browse files on your pc from the Transformer (once you have shared them in windows.) and set up the connection in File Manager HD.
You can then copy and paste them as if they were on the same machine.
It will ask for login details, these are:
your computers network ip address eg 192.168.0.2,
your log on which is the name you use to log into windows with,
and a password, again, this is your windows password.
You will need to install Windows Media Player 11 or higher and add the shared directories to your 'library' then they will show up on the shared network using UpnP or SMB.

The Cloud
I originally tried that. But, for whatever reason, it wouldn't see my "shares" across my network whereas ES File Explorer did.
Also, File Manager HD has advertisements. ES File Explorer doesn't clutter up your screen with ads. Unless of course you are rooted and have ad blocking software installed on your TF.

This and "my cloud" are really simply and easy solutions that i also prefer, however they are not really wifi, or your home internal network. They require moving the data up over your broadband access and back again. If you have a large broadband monthly rate who really cares i guess but it seems kind of silly to push it up and back again. But at the same time i do't really trust free services like drop box to snoop over my stuff if not to just sell my habits or likes and dislikes to potential sales.

Thanks, this works really well. I hate having multiple apps that have overlapping functions, so was keen to avoid a separate app just for file transfer. Was using File Manager HD anyway, so that works!
As for Dropbox, want to keep my files where they are, not put them in a special Dropbox folder. Also, having read somewhere that the only thing stopping Dropbox employees accessing your storage space is trust (ie no specific security measures stopping them from snooping), not sure I really trust that service!!
Thanks you work much .for information .is Very fine work on my galaxy tab

File transfer options (USB and WiFi)

This is a list of all the options I tried (in chronological order) to solve my file transfer issues with the Galaxy Tab 10.1. The last option is the most stable one and until either Samsung or Android give us something usable I'll keep using it. Its a WiFi solution, so its slow in comparison to a USB solution.
Kies Software: Simply does not work for me since it requieres the USB drivers to be installed and for some reason they will not install correctly in my laptop.
Kies via Wi-Fi (Settings/Wireless and networks/Kies via Wi-Fi, it requires the Kies software): It says that the SIM card was not detected... There's obviously something really wrong with that Kies app because I have a WiFi only tablet...
Kies App: Basically creates a server in your tab that you can access through your browser. It works but if you need to transfer several GB's of music files organized in folders... you're going to have issues with it... Plus its really unstable.
SwiFTP FTP Server: Basically creates an FTP server in your tablet that give you access to the whole disk. It works with any FTP client in your computer. I use FileZilla. Its realy stable and you can simply drag and drop all your files to your FTP client. Also, it doesnt interfere with the use of the table. So you can use it while the files transfer. There's more options for FTP servers in the market but this one works, so why bother...
I hope this thread help you guys!

I haven't used my USB cable for transfers since I got this program in August. Dev is awesome, will help those that need it, and he updates the program with new features about once a week. Best 99c on the Market.
Another option is Airdroid. Search for it in the Market.
I know theres a lot of options in the market, but I want to fix the usb issue. My music collection is about 5GB. It took the whole day to copy over WiFi... I'm contemplating re-installing Windows... which is a huge PITA...

This is the one i use and it works for me :had also problems with a regular usb stick ,wasn't recognized but after installing the samsungdrivers my pc recognizes my tab 10.1 and usb stick aswell.
had similar problems and removed KIES and installed Airdroid on my tablet and works great!
kies air is not an option when you have to transfer more than a couple of files.
I only found the option to transfer one at a t ime through the web interface.
so it is extremely time consuming to do 1 at a time...
The best option i found so far, was the como with the adaptor for usb sticks and flash cards.
I got it on ebay for about 25$ and i been using it all the time since then.
It is VERY fast (depending on your usb stick as well) but with a trancent stick, i get about 10~15 secs for 1GB of mp3s.
So far it is the best way i found to transfer files.
P.S. I believe it is a lot faster than using the cable usb connection with the included charge/data cable.

New to smartphone, various questions

I have several questions that hopefully some of you could answer for me.
1. I tried to put some .pdf's on my phone via PC cable. I placed them under "Download" folder. But they do not appear there. Other .pdf's which I have downloaded with the phone are there, but the ones I copy there via PC do not appear up.
2. When using google maps, is it not possible to set a destination or target by using the map, and without having to actually know the address? Just like dekstop google maps "From here/To here"
3. Is it not possible to navigate by only using the GPS? It makes no sence really to require an internet connection as I have saved parts of the map in use for offline use. I tried the navigation but it wouldn't find the destination.
4. I would like to set "Tasks", but I could not find a proper way to do it. When I do it via calendar, the reminder is not a proper alarm (just a small ding or so, very easy to miss). Id like an alarm similiar to the watch alarm.
5. I've read several methods to root my phone. Which one is the easiest and "cleanest"? And a way to allow me to un-root my phone right after. Would this be a good guide: http://www.howtogeek.com/115297/how-to-root-your-android-why-you-might-want-to/
And should I unlock the bootloader?
6. Does the phone not have the stock capability to record sound? And to record a phone conversation? I come from a flip phone, and those did. Do I really need an app for that?
Thank you all.
I. Send the .pdf's to your email instead. Very easy. Or save them to your sd card.
2. To set a destination jurt long press where you want to go and a menu will pop up. From the menu you can choose route or navigation. You can then input the from address.
3. You can navigate using just the map - follow the blue line- without a data connection as long as you input and download the from and to adress before you swithch of the data connection.
4. I do not use tasks so much but the Google calendar works for me and the reminder is loud enough. I even get an email with sound as a reminder.
5. I can't help you here. I have a Note II and see no reason to root…just yet.
Hope this helps.
^Since he can't answer 5, I'll try. Firstly do NOT use a toolkit. They may be the easiest way of rooting, but if you run into issues (and trust me, if you take advantage of root you probably will at some point) a toolkit won't help you at all. Take the time to do it manually, so that when it comes to the worst you'll know how to sort your phone out. If you look in the stickied threads there's definitely a full guide somewhere (I think in the N4 General forum).
Thanks for the replies.
1. Thata is not really an options. I have some pdf's several mb's big. Nexus 4 also does not have an SD card. There must be a folder where I should place them (or any other files for that matter). I copied over my music and video files in the appropriate directories and those work fine.
2,3. Without internet, I only get "Loading address..." or "Getting driving directions" loading sign, and just stays that way. My location is found via GPS, and the map grid is saved for offline usage. When I save the map grid, does that not save all the addresses in that grid?
I have also added another question in the OP.

1) Do they appear on your PC ? Can you see them with a file explorer (ES File Explorer, for example) ?
2/3) To set a destination, you have to be connected to the internet, whatever you do. I think it's because Maps need internet to set the itinerary and download the part's map that will be cached on your device.
5) I think too that rooting it manually is the best solution.
6) No, it's not possible without having to install an app. If you wan to, I suggest you to install Hi-Q MP3 Recorder. The Lite version should be enough, unless you want to record 10+ minutes. I don't have a clue about recording a phone conversation.

Yes they appear in my phone "Download" directory when I look at it via Windows Explorer on my PC. Maybe they need to be put in another directory and not "Download"? Like videos go into Video. And pictures into DCIM/Camera

Yes but some PDF viewers require you to put the PDF files in a specific folder. For example, adobe reader will only "see" files in Download/Adobe Reader but you can change settings so that you can search your PDF through a built-in explorer.

If you use a file explorer to try and open a PDF, then if you haven't set a file type association, the OS will ask you which program you want to use to open it, then you can choose Adobe Reader. It doesn't matter if it isn't in a particular folder.

PDF Viewer on the phone you mean?
On the phone, when I go to downloads (the only location I know off where I can view PDF's), apparently it uses Quickoffice to open those PDF's (the one I donwloaded). As I mentioned it does not see PDF's I put there manually via the USB cable from my PC -> Nexus 4 via Windows Explorer.
Just to make sure there isn't any confussion, I can see the PDF I put on my phone in Windows Explorer. But when I use my phone, that PDF will not show up in my "Download".
Is there another place I should put it?
So move the PDFs to a different folder and try again. All I know is I can view them using Adobe Reader in any folder
And if it still not working download adobe viewer and try with.
At last, you could download a file explorer app such as ES explorer and open your file with it, it will ask you which app do you want to open the file with

The Nexus 4 quickoffice is just a file viewer (it doesn't even have an app icon), so you'll need to use another application to locate your files to open them in Quickoffice.
I recommend using Astro or ES. I've used both and absolutely love them.
Obligatory Sales pitch: There's also a file manager built into the Quickoffice Pro app (and you can connect cloud accounts too) - It's available for $15 here, and it supports PDF annotation for Adobe 5-9 files.
yep that was the problem. I have installed ES and now I can access my phone files just like on my computer (why wouldnt this be standard?)
I have also installed adobe reader, so I could found the .pdf file too via that app.
Thanks.
Quick side question: I have set-up an email account using the "Email" built in app. However, it changed some privacy settings (stuff like being able to change phone settings, etc) and I clicked accept. Now I would like to review them. Where would those be found? I checked all options in the "Email" app but couldn't find anything.

I think (and mind you this is all my own thoughts through observation/reading news), Google is working towards a life in the "cloud", so storage on the device itself kind of defeats the purpose. there's Drive for file management and gdocs, Quickoffice for when you need Office, Google Play Music, Books, Movies, etc.
You can review app permissions under Settings>Applications>All, then select the application you'd like to see the permissions for.

3: Google maps uses internet to calculate the best route to your destination. While you can view your location offline, any searching does not work - in other words, the actual addresses are not stored in your phone. Only the "picture" of the map is.
4: you can download some app (any.do is awesome), or set the calendar notification sound to something longer. It will still be only a popup, but it will "ring" for longer.
6. yup, you have to find an app for that..
About navigation, as soon as your phone has calculated the route you can turn data off. As someone have said, Google Maps use data for calculating the fastest route, but afterwards only GPS is required to track your position.
I just got my N4 a few days ago and used this guide to root my phone (stupid easy to follow... even has a video if you need it)
Unfortunately, Android doesn't offer a free offline navigation system like Nokia did (OVI maps was great!) but there are some paid alternatives in Android.
I bought Sygic (http://www.sygic.com/en) and it allows you to download all the maps onto your phone and navigate without internet. Maps for Germany are about 700MB. If you are in the US for example, you can just d/l by State.
Hope that helps!

[Q] G2 Media Transfer with Macs

Hey everyone,
I was looking to get an LG G2 but my only concern is that my primary computer is a Mac, and I see no compatible way for me to transfer media files (primarily music) from my computer to my phone. Other companies such as Samsung have Kies that works with Macs as well, or Sony that has Bridge for Mac compatibility, but LG doesn't have this alternative I believe.
Does anyone know of any alternatives I can use? As I really do want this phone.
Thanks in advance!
Not a problem. Use http://www.android.com/filetransfer/

Thanks in advance!

also, you can use the Terminal and the Android SDK, and 'adb push file locationOnPhone' to get files onto the phone.
Thanks for all your help!

After checking out Google Music Manager I've noticed that I cannot use it in Canada, or as Google says "The Google Play music player is currently available in select territories." Do you happen to know when I would be able to use this alternative? Thanks again
I have used ISyncr for quite a while and a number of different Androids. It easily interfaces with itunes on my MacBook Pro. For file transfer I use Android Transfer you can easily drag and drop. Some limitations but overall works straight forward easy drag and drop.
I used DoubleTwist + AirTwist. I had it purchased a long time ago. Android File Transfer worked too but it would freeze randomly (on OSX 10.8.3).
Transfer photos and music from MAC to LGG2
This is really easy to do WITHOUT a third party application or a USB connection.
Just go to to your SETTINGS in the LG G2, then NETWORKS then tap on Share and Connect. Make sure Wireless Store is ON, then tap on it. You'll get a page with URLs on the bottom for Windows and Mac. Also a Username and Password.
On your MAC, click on the blue face FINDER and click on COMMAND K.
You'll get a little box, then type in the URL for MAC from your phone, click on ADD then click on URL in the second box . If it asks for the Username and Password, type those in too. Click on + then CONNECT.
Your phone will then pair with your MAC and you'll get a folder on your desktop for the phone. Open that up and click to open the SDCARD folder, you will see all the folders contained in your phone. Open the MUSIC or PICTURES folder, then copy your songs or pics to these folders. When you're done, check your phone. All that you've copied will be in your phone. My pics were all in folders, and this trsnsferred them all over in folders.
I stuffed about for days downloading all these programs that are supposed to connect up with the phone, waste of time, none of them worked. I even paid for 2 of them, so waste of money also. All the time, the function was sitting there in the phone !
Good Luck.
