[Q] bricked from OTA - G2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My cousin took the ota on his rooted but stock phone and now it's stuck in recovery. I thought i would be able to fix it easy but sideload isn't working properly, nor can I get to download mode or the bootloader.
I tried flashing a rom several times with sideload but the phone just boots straight back into recovery once done. It goes through the steps fine with no errors but does not work.
I also tried restoring to stock but the phone won't go into download mode.
He has cwm 6.0.4.4
I did a little bit of reading earlier about it for him and saw that someone else had the same issue but with trwp. I read the post that he said solved his problem but I don't think that solution is possible with cwm.
Can someone please help because i'm out of ideas. Once I lose the ability to access download mode i'm a bit lost as what to do from there.
thanks

In twrp recovery, go to advanced settings and enter the terminal commands.
Type the following
dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/block/platform/msm_sdcc.1/by-name/fota
then hit enter
type
dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/block/platform/msm_sdcc.1/by-name/misc
then hit enter and reboot.

I'm not aware of how if it does. I personally use twrp and have been for awhile so cwm has become a little foreign to me. I browsed all over and couldn't find anything. He didn't even mean to take the update but rather than setting a new time he kept hitting back and eventually it decided take it on its own.

Hit thanks by accident.
You can do it through adb too assuming he can get his phone connected to a pc. That command has to be entered

I just used adb shell and entered those commands and rebooted the phone and it went back to recovery.
Now I just sideloaded ose 4.4.2 again and it still just booted back to recovery.
do I have to do anything special with the phone in recovery for those commands to work?
adb reads the device fine and I can do all sorts of commands in adb with the phone and everything works.
There has to be a way to fix this phone.
Why am I unable to access download mode anymore?
Thanks for your help.

Did you get any error messages when you hit enter? Hopefully somebody with more knowledge chimes in here.

[Q] Stuck in twrp recovery after update

Morning everÿone,
I am currently stuck in twrp recovery with a sprint lg g2. I factory reset my phone last night, and all was well. Accidentally clicked on the ota update that was showing it had downloaded. Phone rebooted into recovery. I have tried to restore from a backup I made last night after the hard reset. Phone says it was successful, I click reboot, comes right back up into recovery after the lg symbol.
I am new to android, so I am not familiar with how to use adb. I am fine with losing all the info that is on my phone, no biggie, just need the phone working again.
I have a zip saved to my phone, from when I was rooted before, which I tried to flash. It takes about 30 seconds, and then says that it failed.
Any help, pointers, directions would be amazing.
Also, have never used side loader, but have heard of people loading roms this way, to get back working.
Please and thank you

Great. thank you. I do not have adb access, if i go into advanced, and then terminal command, i have a list of folders, paths, something like that, that I can click on. which would I need to go to, in order to type in the command?
"Then you should be able to successfully reboot your phone via the TWRP menu option, or via a simple reboot command in adb.
If you DONT have ADB access (because of an early build of TWRP), you can simply use TWRP's awesome "terminal command" option to run the following:
Code:
dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/block/platform/msm_sdcc.1/by-name/fota
You'll have to type that whole thing out, and be VERY careful with spaces and punctuation. One wrong letter and you could nuke your phone.
After that finishes, you can reboot and continue on your happy way!"

In terminal command, there is a choice for select. I clicked that, and then I typed in the following command in terminal command:
dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/block/platform/msm_sdcc.1/by-name/fota
once this was done, i backed out, and selected reboot, power off. phone powered up, and went right back into twrp recovery...What did I do wrong?
This is from tomajo2 in another thread. That OP was stuck in CWM, but in case the fix is similar, here you go:
I have a better idea to repair this problem.
1- You have to install LG Phone drivers and Android.sdk
2- Download TWRP for LG G2 and paste it to platform-tools folder in android.sdk direction on your PC
3- Go to recovery and plug the phone to PC
4- Next, in your phone recovery CWM you have to choose install zip and install.zip from sideload. Then wait for install the drivers of phone on your PC.
5- Open console in folder platform-tools (shift + PPM) and type adb sideload nameofTWRPfile.zip
6- Then reboot phone
7- Next enter to another time to recovery (now will be TWRP recovery)
8- Enter advanced and terminal console
9- Choose select and type the second option from this site: http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=2451696
10- Reboot phone
In my case is everything ok, but you have to remember that you can't install any OTA on custom ROM !
Sorry, but my english is not so good
Thank you,
I just received and installed an OTA update today. I was stuck in twrp and this saves my butt.
I used the terminal command in TWRP menu and type in the dd code and reboot the phone. Make sure you check twice that you have typed it in correctly or you could brick your phone.
Cheers.

When you are typing this in terminal command, where are you typing it at? I believe that I typed it in correctly, checked twice. Backed out, went to reboot, and power off. When comes back on, goes back into recovery.
I see at the top of terminal command, there is a line with / in it.
If you press select, it takes you to a line where you can enter in the full command, which I did before.
When I press select,in terminal command this is what is I type in, checked to make sure I am typing it in correct.
dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/block/platform/msm_sdcc.1/by-name/fota
Once I type this in, I hit go, in the lower right.
Takes me back out one screen
I then go to reboot
I've tried big power off and system
Once loads back up, it goes right back to twrp recovery.
Where am I going wrong? Where it says by name in the command, do I need to change that, or does it stay by-name? I've been typing it In as by name like the command shows.
I would love to help but what you did is exactly what I did. However regarding the go button I am not so sure. Why don't you try hitting enter instead.

here's what I did when I was in a very similar situation as you. I was using CWM and I got caught in the same boot loop I was trying to get into download mode. After doing some research you have to download TWR p on your computer and saiboat it.. (Sorry was using speak to text) you have to sideload twrp and then flash it.. Reboot the phone and it will be in twrp.. Then you can put it in download mode and flash stock ROM back on... Or you can sideload a ROM that you kbiw works and flash it.. You go to install on cwm and then look for install from sideload... Use adb to push IT.. Look up (can boot loop xea) on Google and there will be some very helpful post that will tell you exactly how to do what I'm saying

My recovery still works, but when i install a zip from sd like rayglobe for instance, it goes through the aroma set up, reboots but goes straight back into CWM recovery. I get a message saying android-secure.img missing.
I also cannot install a nandroid back up

Help, possible brick!!!!!!!!

I am/was rooted with custom recovery. I was running stock ROM with minor tweaks (g3 notification panel, etc). I downloaded the "knock code" update that just came out for the LG G2 (AT&T), not even thinking about the root/custom recovery, and then when I went to install it, it booted into TWRP recovery. I had no idea what to do from there (it would just reboot back to recovery if I rebooted), so I wiped the system then flashed my backup. Still nothing, it still booted into recovery. So then, being the smart guy that I am, I did a complete wipe of everything (internal storage and everything), and now I'm stuck at recovery with absolutely nothing. No backups or anything.
How do I get my phone back up and running?

What exactly is this supposed to do? I have absolutely nothing on my phone now- no backups or anything. I'm assuming I need to download a rom and flash it via recovery. Is it possible to get a rom on my phone if it just boots into recovery?

I thin you can ADB push a rom file to your phone, flash it in twrp, then enter those terminal commands which will allow it to boot normally

You took ota while having custom recovery ?
This will enable you to boot (if you didn't mess up another things on your system)
you may also: "adb push rom.zip /sdcard/rom.zip"
-where rom.zip is the name of your rom.
Can't figure out how to get ADB to recognize my phone. I downloaded SDK and all that. When I do "adb devices" I get "no devices found"
There's a bug in TWRP 2.7.0.0 that you can't activate ADB.
I suggest to boot into download mode (plug your phone to your computer USB while pressing volume UP key), open LG PC Suite, go to Mobile Device > Restore upgrade errors, and it will flash the latest stock firmware

Always booting to TWRP

I've installed TWRP last weekend and installed LineageOS 14.1 for my LG G6 H870.
I was tinkering with Magisk and Magisk Manager to be able to use Netflix, I didn't restart my device after this step.
Last night LineageOS offered an OTA update and afterwards it restarted to recovery mode.
I assumed I had to install the new image manually so that's what I did.
After the installation the phone rebooted back to TWRP Recovery so I wiped cache, data and dalvik.
It still rebooted back to TWRP recovery so I tried to reinstall LineageOS again by following these steps: https://wiki.lineageos.org/devices/h870/install#installing-lineageos-from-recovery
The phone still only boots to recovery so my assumption, after some reading on XDA, is that something is wrong with the bootloader.
This could have happened when I was tinkering with Magisk, I think I've seen a notice that I tried to make changes to the bootloader.
To fix the bootloader the main suggestion is to flash the stock rom so i've started that path.
I've installed Uppercut and LG Up use links from this thread: https://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-g5/development/uppercut-lgup-loader-g5-variants-t3511295/
I found a stock rom at https://lg-firmwares.com/lg-h870-firmwares/#firmwaresList and I assume I need the "NEU/NORTHERN EUROPE" rom.
When I open Uppercut it says "There is no handset connected".
I've got no clue what steps to take at this point.
FYI I'm able to get in to the bootloader mode and the recovery mode but havent been able to get into the download mode.
If you still have twrp just flash stock from there.

I didn't know it was possible to flash a kdz file using twrp.
According to this reply it isn't possible using kdz files https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2650569
Do you know for sure that this is possible?
I think I need to flash the bootloader using fastboot but I don't know what source to use, and I hardly found bootloader files on the web.
I don't think Magisk is modifying the bootloader, but I could be wrong.
You can find the H870_v10T and US997_v14A bootloaders here:

Thanks for pointing out that thread!
I downloaded the bootloader and succesfully installed it using `adb sideload LG-H87010f-Flashable.Bootloader.zip`
But the phone still only boots to TWRP.
So I tried to flash a complete stock rom from https://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-g6/development/rom-eu-lg-h870-10t-rom-t3654134
I did wipe Dalvik/ART, Cache, System and Data and afterwards installed that rom.
Unfortunately these steps didn't make any difference to the boot sequence.
I've been trying again to get into the download mode using key combo's and using `adb reboot download` but it reboots to TWRP instead.
What should I try now?
I finally managed to enter download mode!
In the end I figured that I confused the key combo from my previous phone with this one.
I should only hold the volume up button and then plugin in the usb cable.
What I tried numerous times was a combo of volume up and power button.
for reference and people showing up here later. Doing lineage OTA updates on the G6 forces the device into that endless boot loop into recovery. You get out there by entering the shell in TWRP and dd'ing some zeros somewhere. I had it once but sadly did not write down how I solved it. Google for boot loop and twrp you will find hits here on xda where you see a dd if=/dev/zero line and explaining what todo. It is a bit different for each device, but the article tells you what to look for. As I understood it, writing some zeros at the start of a partition ends the loop, but I am no expert there, it just worked for me.
Oh yes, and stay away from lineage OTAs
Edit: ok, not xda but reddit, anyway here is the link

I'm using TWRP 3.1 and still had this issue.
Despite thinking my phone was rooted, I couldn't su, adb as root or anything, so I couldn't /fstab. I ended up looking around and comparing the path I was in with other's. So if you're having this problem just keep going around typing ls and pressing tab like below. Basically you're looking for "by-name/misc" in "/dev/block/platform/".
ls /dev/block ls /dev/block/platform ls /dev/block/platform/[dir or two] ls /dev/block/platform/[dir or two]/by-name ls /dev/block/platform/[dir or two]/by-name/misc
Then the dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/block/platform/[dir or two]/by-name/misc count=1 bs=32
Good luck and thanks so much for the help!

Then flash the stock zip.....
If you had searched the forum you would see the stock zips and bootloaders all complied for twrp.

Thanks, your solution worked for me too
Same happend to me, there are some post that say you have to boot to bootloader and send bootloader continue command with your PC, however that didn't work for me. To flash with LG UP you have to have your phone off, connect USB cable to PC, press Vol+ on phone and connect the USB cable to the phone, it should start in a mode called download mode, then LG UP should find your device
