[Q] Weird mark on the screen? - G2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Just appeared on my LCD this morning. No physical damage that I can notice -- no marks on the screen protector or cracked glass. Not sure what it is. Only noticeable when the backlight is on. I got the phone in November... should I bring it back to Verizon?

Yes, you must return it, it is causes by some dead píxels that cannot display correctly the colors, so it's a hardware issue, check your warranty it should be covered.

All right. Seems that the higher the brightness, the more pronounced it is.

screen border/banding that affects the atrix?

noticed today that on dark colors a thin gray border will appear all around the screen. it is quite annoying....and affects anything displayed on the atrix...well mine at least...and at least a few others too im sure...
i first noticed it with the menu buttons on opera mobile...thought it wad a design element but rather it is a display limitation.
attached is a darkish background downloaded from google images. view and zoom the picture to fill the entire screen. on my atrix the gray border is as clear as day...how bout for you guys?
edit: this isnt backlight bleed nor qhd compatibility issues...it is an actual thin gray line that appears on the screen.
Nope. Just you.

thats because the atrix screen is not an led screen, it is a tft screen. the atrix screen illuminates from the edges around the screen while led screens such as amoleds from samsung illuminated from small diodes behind the screen. its brighter around the edges because it is being lit up from the sides.

No. Its not just him. There was a thread about this before. I for one have the issue but don't notice it 99% of the time.

it isnt backlight bleed...it is an actual thin gray line that goes around the entire screen...but it only appears when theres a darkish color present at that location. when the background is pure 100pct black it doesnt show up though.
on my phone it is very apparent when viewing the attachment pic in the op and zooming in so that it fills the screen.
Well I'm glad to hear it's not just me. And yes, it's very noticeable and really distracting when I'm watching a video.

I had the same issue with my Atrix. Went to an AT&T device support center and they swapped it out with a brand new Atrix and the new device does not have this issue. It seems the banding/border issue is affecting a small number of those devices.
I didn't have banding initially, but over time the problem seemed to become more apparent, especially after the gingerbread OTA.

how long did you own the atrix before you swapped it out? just wondering since this atrix is about half a year old now...
I just came here to ask about this... I've had my atrix for about 2 days and this is quite distracting.
I probably need to lock bootloader and unroot if I want to get a new phone right?
Here's a quick shot of it.
i just can see this bandings on ur photo with full brightness!
its not important! take it easy!
i think its because of LCD!

yes! that's the problem exactly...should spread that pic around so people are aware. look at the ghostly rectangle that is created...can see it clearly even on normal brightness. maybe you can find a non-affected atrix like datumdei did...
I would relate it to the gingerbread update. I didn't have it before in Froyo and I tried everything to replicate it, now I can also see it. They must've tune the colors, saturation and other settings because now I don't see the gradient banding in the calculator app and even the XDA app isn't that obvious anymore.

Hey guys, i just got my Atrix yesterday and only notice this when the screen is grey. At first I thought it was screen burn-in from a static image, but after finding this page I feel better knowing its not just me.
Are there any other web pages that you have found related to this issue?
Also, could the android market update have caused this?
If you want to test to see if your phone is doing this, downlod dead pixel test from the android market and tap the screen until it turns grey.

Help me!! don't know what happened to my screen...

hi, i have a problem with my transformer screen; in the centre of the screen when it's black (or dark colors) it appeared a big white zone, what is it? it's backlight bleeding? also at a corner there another zone.....how can i fix i? pleaze help me!!!
I have same problem also but came from stepping on tablet. Does the warranty cover this? I call it preasure points.
Yes, thats usually caused by too much pressure on the screen. I have similar on my laptop, which was caused by a bigass shelf falling from the wall on it (the laptop survived!!!)
I dont know how it works in the states, but here damages caused by "missuse" or accidents is not covered by the normal warranty. You have to buy an extra insurance to cover those kind of damages.
if they are from stepping, why they appear only if the screen is black or a dark color??

Who cares? Are you going to tell Asus you stepped on it?
Just RMA and tell them it happened spontaneously or that it was always like that and then got worse recently.
In fact i'll do like you said next week, unfortunately now i'm at my parent's house and the purchase receipt is at my university residence ( and it's quite far 530km)....hoping everything will be fine, i like so much my TF101.
i'll update you next week.
Light bleeding is a common problem. You won't have a problem with warranty.
i thought that it is light bleeding but was perplexed about the one in the center of the screen that appeared in less a day..
A word of caution. I sent my transformer back for a light bleed problem and ASUS sent it back to me in worse condition than when it left. Then they had the balls to ask me to send it back to them at my expense.
No thanks, I'll live with the light bleed, but I will never purchase another asus product again.

mmm.... I've read lots of bad review to the asus RMA, i hope here in Italy is better but i'm not so confident...
However my problem is the zone at the center is so much annoying. let's see if they will accept it, i must come up with a good excuse for rma-ing it after 3 month after the purchase...do the lightbleeding "expand"?

Because the cells in that region are permanently switched to a higher luminance? On dark colors it's easily visible but on bright colors that are already high in luminance to begin with you won't see anything. On white, you should see nothing unless the screen is capable of outputting a "whiter white."

Yup that pretty much sums it up.
To put it in more layman terms - the display has been pushed closer to the background light than the rest of the screen, as well as been damaged.
I know on older TFT's, it was in some cases possible to disassemble it and reallign the screen to the background light plane and, if lucky, fix the issue completely. I fixed an old laptop screen that had been stepped on by doing that.
I dont think its quite as easy on a tablet though, especially since its an IPS and not TFT screen.

What to check when you get the new Nexus 4 in hand?

I can finally leave limbo and get it in hand tomorrow.
And I heard so many "issues" about the phone,
so before I unlock bootloader and flash thing.
I wanna check the phone completely before risking the warranty
So what is the common "issues" right now?
What I know is:
1. Phone rattle
2. Yellow tint / Too warm display / Dead pixels
3. Buzzing sound
and what else?
Thanks
Appearantly "issue" number 2 (Yellow Tint) is only experienced if you update (OTA) once you receive your nexus. If you don't update you won't experience the yellow tint "issue".
A static noise when in a call, if the phone is super close to your ear you can hear it.

It went from glue to software?
Hmmm, some people complain about the bottom of their device creaking. Like where the screws/usb port/microphone are. Mine does, but its only if I push on it. Holding it normally, there is no issue.

Left - pre ota, right - Post ota. After quadrant they are in reverse. Forget about clarity, just look at the colours. Shot handheld with dslr, so a bit shaky.
Here's your proof that you can see with your eyes that it is ota.

That doesn't even make sense.. I guess they changed the color calibrations in the OTA? Well whatever I just hope and pray that my nexus 4 doesn't have any of these issues.
Don't worry about the color too much. If it could be changed by an OTA then devs will come up with the perfect colors. Think Galaxy Nexus.
There is a small rattle around the camera area if you shake it. Honestly I don't find that a problem since I'm not shaking it constantly.
The buzzing in the earphone/headphone is a bigger problem but not annoying to me. I can't hear it when in calls or listening to music. It's only very pronounced when there is no sound coming out.
I still hope Google itself can have a better tune in the color temp.
About the yellow tint (dots), is it common or just a rare case?
Most likely a rare case, my phone currently has no issues with yellow spots on the screen
what about bleeding sceen i seen 2 spot on top of the screen when in dark room just reminded me of LG G2X.

This is software, kernels are always able to adjust the color balancing and saturation etc once more custom kernels come out this problem will be addressed/fixed.

You'll get that with any LCD really... if it's really bad you might want to see if they'll exchange it, otherwise there's a chance it will be worse if you get it replaced.

Yeah, two small areas on the top of the screen where it just looks lighter than the rest. Not bad compared to most LCDs I've used.

Ya, i notice the whiter color in the second I turned it on.
I am okay with it. That's why I put my SP on it.
But the yellow spot is not...
So I just called for a replacement.
Dang...need to get one SP again
Another thing ( quite obvious ) are admittedly rare [ saw one user in reddit mentioning this] dust under the screen or noticeable dead pixels .
Also check to make sure there are no "bulges" around the sides of the phone where the black backing meets the front bezel. I have a small bulge near the bottom right side of the phone that looks like a little clip failed to engage. I have tried pushing it in to sit flush but it does nothing. I wasn't going to do anything about it since it's not that big of a deal but I called Play support and told the rep the issue. He said he has had a few reports of this problem and recommended an RMA. So I have a new one on the way.
Check this thread for pics of it happening to another guy:

[Q] Blue tint on screen when viewing it from side..

Hello! I have had my g2 d802 for around a month now, and I have noticed a blue tint when I am viewing it from the side.. When I tilt it to the other side it began to be yellow. At its worst the screen is "washed out". So I am wondering if this is normal? Or is it a hardware problem?

Are you able to go to a store to compare your phone with a working display model? I'd check there first to see if the display model has a better screen than yours. Chances are your screen may be defective. You'll know right away if its good or not
Anyone else who is having this? Im just wondering if its worth sending it in for that. Really happy with the phone otherwise, and haven't dropped it either :S

Yes, I should probably do that. I am around 40km away from a store where I can try one, but I will probably go there and check. I read that this phone had pretty good viewing angles so it might be defective..:/
Just guessing here, but did you come from a Samsung device or any other with (AM)OLED screen tech?
That tech is self illuminating and doesn't exhibit the off-axis effects typical of even the very best LCD displays.
It's normal for a LCD display to wash out and/or color shift off axis.
As to whether or not yours is typical, I can't say.

Running on the assumption that its a dead pixel the only way to repair it would be replace the lcd but its seems quite drastic for the sake of one pixel.

The pixel is visible (bright, white maybe?) so it's not dead, just stuck.
And no, stuck pixels are not fixed under warranty unless they cross over a certain threshold (a certain number of them over the whole screen, or another, smaller number if they're all close to one another).
But it's not the phone's fault, almost all screens develop these over time. My old screen had 2 of them in under a year.
