I have the files in system/app but they won't install. Thoughts?

Set the ownership to root-root
With the correct apks, permission and ownership it should work. Can't figure out other thing.
Have you reboot after pushing the 4 files?

Ownership is set correctly.
Reboot has no effect.

How can I apply 755 permissions using root explorer

How can I apply 755 permissions using root explorer?
Sent from my HTC HD2 using XDA App
Hi,
Find the file you want to change the permissions of in Root Explorer. Long press on the file, select 'permissions' then you need to check or uncheck the boxes according to the permissions you want to set. This website will help you find out which boxes you should check. E.g. 755 is rwxr-xr-x.
When you have finished, make sure that the file shows rwxr-xr-x in Root Explorer.
If you can't work out which boxes to check, simply find a file with rwxr-xr-x permissions and long click its 'permissions' to find out which boxes are checked
Thank you very much for your help

No, that can cause bootloops and worse stuff to happen.
permission
After doing everything it says system does not allow you to do this change in permission

[Q] Trouble restoring "/system/app"

I (without heeding the warnings) decided it would be a good idea to delete certain apps (including Hero of Sparta, Lets Golf, etc.) once I got my tablet rooted. Luckily, there are two A500's in my household, so I was able to copy the /system/app directory from the other untouched tablet.
Problem is, I can't seem to copy the directory (or any apps from it) into my tablet. I've used both ASTRO and File Manager HD, but in both, the 'paste' command is greyed out. It's as if I don't have the necessary permissions.
So, what's going on?
did you set the Read-Write permission on that directory?

No, thanks for the reminder.
Upon attempting to edit permissions, though, using a terminal emulator, I get an error after typing this:
Code:
su
cd /system/app
chmod 777 /system/app
And the error I get is:
"Unable to chmod /system/app: Read-only file system"

Silly question, but do you have your system rooted?
Yes, I do. Using GingerBreak as I'm still waiting on that 3.1 update

OK, then try a file explorer like Root Explorer and you should be able to set the rights ro R/W and copy your files over.
Root Explorer worked like a charm. I'm suprised File Manager HD doesn't perform those functions. I got a good feeling when I saw that Root Explorer was requesting superuser permission.

Glad to hear that worked. Root Explorer is what I use. Have been for over a year. I think File MAnager HD can also do it, but it is not as straight forward ad Root Explorer. Have fun.
BTW the permission setting 0777 means anyone can access it (or any other application), for the sake of having a better security the permissions should be changed to 445 so only root can access and execute those files (I'm not sure if APKs are considered excutables if they are not the 444 will be the right setting)

Best way to push modified apks

So I've started modifying my apks to create a custom theme for myself. The question I have, is what is the best way to get them back on my phone.
I pulled them with toolkit, and tried to push them that way, but it didn't seem to work as it said i was missing certificates...
I tried to just push the files into system/apps but that didn't seem to work.
Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance!

Try it the easy way.. Root Explorer copy it in the right place and give the necessary rights.

What do you mean by rights? Are you talking about r/w r/o?

Are you trying to push files with the toolkit? Download the android SDK and push the files with adb. Its much better than root explorer as you'll be able to see changes immediately (except for the framework-res and SystemUI apk's). Also, try pushing to system/app (not system/apps).

I think he means permissions. Like said previously push them with adb as its much simpler, you can also set permissions with adb shell though I cant remember the exact syntax but it's a chmod command.
adb remount
adb push (name of apk) /system/app

[Q] how to uninstall this app

I try last version of es file explorer and enable root explorer, when i delete superuser.apk i got errer message says can't delete superuser.apk
Wait, why does it force close? It shouldn't. That's what I do for usual apps that disagree with me. But I haven't had the need to remove superuser before. I'm sorry.
You could try using a different browser, but that's all I can suggest.
Are the Superuser.apk and the su-binaries (!) up to date?
You should be able to delete the apk in system/app/ using the ADB:
adb shell
cd system/app
ls
rm nameofapp.apk
reboot
If that all doesn't help you might just do a clean reflash of the rom...
PS: You may also try installing busybox which to fix the problem.

lost all permissions after messing with platform.xml

Hello,
I have SM-N9005 variant and recently I updated to the latest android 4.4.2 leaked version with Odin, and then rooted with CF-Auto-Root.
After that, I lost the permission to write to external sdcard.
I searched and found this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=49603814
I backed up /system/etc/permissions/platform.xml and then I followed the instructions there.
After restart, a lot of app stopping messages showed and I had no access to file system or network anymore.
I used adb shell to restore the original platform.xml but it didn't helped in any way.
It seems that all mounts and networks are working, but none of the applications has permission to use any of them.
How do I resolve this, without wiping all my data?
Thank you!
You need to set the correct permissions on the .xml after you overwrite it back into the /system Off the top of my head I can't think what they are (just out of bed and got to work so still sleepy!)

I tried 644 and 777 but the problem persists.
rw-r-r which is 644 - read wrong
or chmod 666 -- forgive my lack of memory, it has been a long time since I have used chmod commands, few years since my glFTPD / site modding days.

i dont know if it helps in your situation but did you try the "fix permissions" from a custom recovery like twrp?
there are also scripts you can execute in a terminal, the knoxout script linked in my sig for example has a permission fixer included.

just type sh kn0x0ut.sh to get all commands.
if you dont get this working, you can do it from twrp (i think cwm too)if you have it.
tap on "advanced" and then on "fix permissions".
