Best way to get Recovery on Verizon? - G2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am rooted on Verizons latest OTA (VS98012B)
I just want to know the easiest way to get a recovery on it. I dont know how to deal with Loki or anything, I just want to be able to do a backup so I can flash things without worrying.
What is the best way? does freegee have any issues?

You should look in the android development thread....I'm guessing the easiest way for you would be to use flashify for TWRP 2.6.3.3......

I just used FreeGee and had no problems.

Yes I would use freegee.. Its an app that installs twrp or cwm with a push of a button.. I suggest twrp as cwm is notorious for boot loops

Freegeee all the way !

Rooting from Linux without CWM?

I want to root my N7 directly from Linux, but I don't want to replace recovery with CWM. I like CWM on my phone, but I understand it won't allow OTA stock upgrades which I expect will be important for a while on the N7.
I've already unlocked the bootloader, but I haven't seen any instructions for rooting from Linux without replacing the standard recovery with CWM.
Can't you just flash CWM, root, and then reflash stock recovery?

There won't be any OTA that is not quickly (if not before it is released) will be available is a flashable download on XDA and other forums.
You are not going to miss anything.
You can as already posted, reflash the stock recovery, but again, whats the point.

Where would I find the stock recovery?

update OTA manually without PC

Does anyone have way to update the OTA manually without using PC?
Do you have the latest CWM or TWRP installed?
If you do and you haven't messed with the stock system files you could download the update here and flash in recovery.
Basically you want to be on a stock rooted 4.3 with the latest CWM or TWRP to do it this way
Thanks for the answer.
Sorry for not making myself clear.
I'm using stock, locked and unroot.
Is this still possible?

With that setup and without a PC I can't think of a way to do it manually...hopefully someone else chimes in but I think you are SOL until you officially get the OTA or flash a custom recovery or have a PC to adb sideload

Yes use the new IOROOT15 to root the device. But I have been unsuccessful in flashing any roms, however I did get twrp to work with FreeGee app in the android market.
I appreciate your help very much, thank you

What version of twrp? Sounds like you may need to update.

I've been unsuccessful in getting any roms to work. I tried 4.2.2 rom and got lg screen then black, had to restore nand backup from twrp recovery but it was hellish to get into, had to do the hold vol+pwr precisely, almost gave up. So, reverted to a backup just fine.
Next tried to loki_flash recovery 2.6.3.1 (then was going to do them in order-2.6.3.2>2.6.3.3 [have not tried going directly to 2.6.3.3) and was hit with an unsupported aboot error (device mismatch).
So now i'm going to try and use flash tool to revert back to 11A, root, install twrp (I hope this is possible and I don't brick my phone [i'm new to all of this])
Anyone tell me if this is an acceptable option to proceed? Thank's in advance.
Acceptable. KDZ to 11A.
Just wanted to post I was successful using lg flash tool to revert to 11A, rooted, freegee twrp, flashed 2.6.3.3, flashed OSE ROM. Everything is well ATM!

Phone's prompting me to take the ZVA update. What do I need to do before accepting?

I am rooted.
TWRP recovery.
Hotspot mod.
I'm guessing updating would put my phone in a boot loop, right? What do I need to do first? Turn off the root and flash a stock recovery? Is that good enough?

Yes, updating will boot loop. If you want the update then you may need to flash the stock ROM to get rid of the hotspot mod.
I have heard this update checks just about everything in the book.
But yes stock recovery, and no root for sure.

Im on the same boat but am gonna wait. Unless theres Spark in your area there not much point to do it. Theres lots of issues with the new ZVA update (on rooted and custom recovery phones) and im gonna wait for an easier fix than what is available. The current process is a bit too complicated and not worth it. Ill wait for a simple zip to flash or a totally custom ROM with ZVA already on it. But thats just me.
If you do it... update us on here.
Rename files in fota folder. Freeze the update app.

How can I go back to stock without a computer?

I want to go back to stock but I don't have access to a computer ATM. Can I do it using TWRP?
You could flash a stock nandroid backup, but you would still have a custom recovery, and technically not stock. You might be able to use flashfire to flash stock recovery, but you would need root, and the ability to load the stock recovery on your phone.
