Lately I have been seeing a lot of people who's Kindle Fire stopped working after charging overnight. So I read around and found an article stating that all the Kindle Fire models (Kindle Fire, Kindle Fire HD 7" & 8", and Kindle Fire 2) leading up to the HDX were not made with the component that prevents overcharging from ruining the battery. It is HIGHLY recommended that you do NOT charge your Fire overnight. While this does not happen to everyone who overcharges their device, it is a lot more likely for it to happen to a device without the safeguard. If this has been posted before, I am terribly sorry
Been charging overnight for over a year at times leaving it on charge for over a days period always at 2 amps.
I do however understand that the kindle supposedly has some deep charging mode even when powered down.
Perhaps it is when the kindle is in this state it does not start but I have very strong doubts of it not having an over charging scenario built in. These devices use lithium batteries and it would be a fire hazard and a heck of a law suit.

For all we know it could be legit. I haven't heard of any Kindles with this problem, but that doesn't mean it's not possible.
I don't think people are intending to be rude. The OP doesn't provide a link to said article. Lithium Ion batteries aren't affected by overcharging, or undercharging, just no charging. Nickle Cadium batteries are affected by over charging and charging before the battery completely drains. The Fire has, I believe, a litium Ion battery as most of todays tech does. The only thing I've ever read about Lith Ion is that you should allow the battery to completely drain every once in awhile.

I got the kindle fire about a week ago. Since that time I have received okay battery life. I don't love or hate it. I decided to check to see if something odd in the background was running. I ran a battery saver program, probably juicedefender, and found that the GPS was on. Wait, what!? There is no GPS in the Fire. So I installed GoLauncher, and used the native power manager to turn it off. These are just preliminary results, but battery life seems to have increased a lot. It could also just be a placebo, but I guess that having the GPS on could be something amazon forgot to remove in the code, and created an endless processing loop. Just a guess, I would love to hear some other thoughts on this.
the only way to tell is the drain the battery doing the exact same thing between changes. i've been tinkering around with my kindle as well because there has to be *something* which explains how the nook tablet can get an extra 2-3 hours on the same capacity battery...
Something... But the Nook actually has 4000 mah battery, while the Fire has a 4400 mah battery, so it has a smaller battery, and better battery life. I would then guess, it is software related, because hardware is virtually identical.
What are you guys considering a bad battery, because I couldn't be more satisfied with mine.. Two days of HEAVY use with the display on for a total of 6 hrs -- is that not what you're all getting? And if so, how is that not good for a dual core processor running on a 7" IPS display?

I was using ADW EX launcher and just did a long tap on screen, added widget, power control.
And it added the little toggle bar that most droid phones have with notification bar.
Wifi was on, blue tooth area was blank, then gps, sound, and autorotate.
I confirmed gps was lit up. tapped it, to disable then removed the widget.
I did the exact same thing. Pretty simple.
surprise surprise....
i did a battery test of the nook tablet vs the kindle fire today (i own both and intend to return one). i had a game running as my test (jelly defense), wifi off, screen brightness max.
nook tablet died at 4 hours. kindle fire lasted an extra hour.
so either all the build.prop stuff i did made a difference, or my nook tablet's battery is defective and i need recalibrate it....

Just noting that there seems to be issues with battery life that factory resets seem to fix (oddly), so it might be worth resetting either/both devices if you see drastically lower than expected battery lives.

I recently flashed CM9 on my kindle fire and for some reason, when I put it to charge overnight, it only got to 50% from 3% in 4 hours. Is the kindle just that slow at recharging or is it something else?
What rom are you using?

hellfire
Um, I really can't say. The Fire charges that slowly but not that slow. It could be your charger (doubtful). You might have a background process causing trouble.
I would say kill all non essential running processes, turn wifi off and try again. If that doesn't work, switch roms. If THAT doesn't work it's probably your charger.
Where are you located? US? Europe?

Yeah its the same micro usb cable I use for my phone so I dont believe it is that. I turned off wifi so I'll see if that was part of the problem. Something i noticed was when i went to settings and under battery it said "discharging" even thought i had it plugged into my laptop.

The stock wall charger for the Kindle Fire puts out 1.8A, even a regular phone charger will take a long time since they usually put out around .8A.

In running the same rom and the battery life is awesome, as long add you keep your CPU governor to regular default 600-1200mhz. Stop and kill running background services, and turn off wifi when not in use. You have to let your battery cycle a few times so the rom will get accustomed to your battery

I have been using a new ICS build and wanted to warn everyone about the shutdown problems. It seems that by choosing to shut down by pushing the button and choosing "shut down" leaves the backlight running (you can see it if you look).
This has drained my battery down to nothing preventing my Kindle from booting. The stock charger did nothing, no charge, no light, no boot. Plugging in to the PC made the Kindle come on, but reboot after a couple seconds, not long enough for me to even get into recovery mode.
On a hunch I used my phone charger. Not only did the Kindle kick on and boot, but it seems to be slowly charging. I restored back to the stock ROM and now it seems like the stock charger has no effect at all.
Just be careful and be aware that the back light will stay on for now until the kernel is updated.
Thanks!

It happened to me already, but it woke up with the original charger.
Thanks!
yeah two known bugs for the 3.0 kernal are usb wall charging and the device not shutting all the way off (backlight stays on). if you need to you can always go into recovery to charge up. also turning lockscreen and touch sounds off in settings>sound will help save battery
It's 2 different bugs that can combine in a bad way: quick battery drain and loss of wall charger.
Anyways there is hope, people have been grabbing a USB charger form other devices or for most the USB-PC route still charges.
The ROMs are getting very good, the banding is fixed and it seems the AC charger issues have been patched up, even the small menu buttons are fixed in one of the ROMs. Now all I need is a volume bar and I will have my daily driver for a while.
This just happened to me...
My kindle died after shutting down for one day. No battery at all...

No, and that's why it's a surprise to them. Hashcode has been saying, repeatedly, he doesn't recommend it as a daily kernel. In big red letters, at the top of two threads, it says wall charging doesn't work. Throughout those threads it has other people posting who say they don't know why their kindle died overnight.
It's just a neverending...I wanna call it a cycle, but there's no cycle to it. It's more like a neverending stream of people who refuse to read.
Guaranteed, if I made a thread offering a kernel and in big red letters at the top it said "THIS KERNEL WILL BRICK YOUR KINDLE" and then proceeded to post a changelog and other information about how to install, etc... There would be no less than 100 posts the following day asking why their kindle doesn't work.
If the devs were offered a dime every time somebody failed to follow directions...

With the newest kernel yes it seems to charge fine. The Pure AOKP build seemed to have more issues. Now I am using the newer AOKP and not does the charger work again, but the LED now shows orange or green (but the battery icon s still wrong).
Huge improvements so far.
This happened a few times with my Optimus V. This was because there was no offline charging support for AOSP ROMs at the time. The only way I could get the phone to stay on was to force the battery into a LG Rumor Touch and recharge it with that until the battery could boot the Optimus. Thinking how the Kindle Fire has no offline charging support and a non-removable battery strikes fear into my soul.
I know the AOKP ROMs fully power off the device. So at least I'm okay with that.
Also, is it bad that my Kindle Fire charges extremely slow with any other cable than the stock charger?

It does charge offline, the problem lies in the LED not reporting this properly (it doesn't turn on to reflect the charge status).

This is normal, as they usually provide less amps than the stock charger (1.8).
For what it's worth, I am on #33 AOKP KF Edition and the LED works perfectly. It's the icons that don't work right.
EDIT: I take that back. If the KF is asleep and you plug it in the LED stays dark. If the tablet is awake and you connect the charger, the orange comes on, putting the tablet to sleep the LED stays orange till it turns green when full.

Actually as one of the guys that's working on the kernel I would have to say you're incorrect. Wall charging does in fact work. The issue with the led is that the kernel doesn't correctly update it, as well as it doesn't update the from in a manner for the icon to change. If you download a battery widget in the market you will see that it does in fact charge with a wall charger. This is also a better route to go since the OEM charger puts out about 1000mv as opposed to 100mv w/USB 1.0 or 500mv w/USB 2.0. Only other steady charging scenario would be USB 3.0 because its output is 900mv.

So I thought of making a thread on your experiences with the battery consumption ratio depending on use etc. My main reason of doing this is because I suspect my dock has a bad battery and I would like to see you guys experience with your tablet/dock combo.
Noticed much difference between power saving, balanced and performance mode?
Processor wise I know each has a rating of 1ghz,1.1ghz and 1.2ghz. I dont see how this would make a big impact in battery life. Now I dont know if these also regulate anything else than the cpu frequency as to make it a noticeable thing.
Whats's the ratio of your Tablet/dock charging? ( what I mean is once your tablet reaches 70% and dock kicks in to charge how much battery would it be left on the dock after tablet reaches 90% wich is point where dock stops charging..
If I leave it charging without using it my dock is left with about 55% battery.
Last night I left the tablet at 52% and the dock fully charged so I left the tablet in sleep mode and charging with the dock. when I come to check on it battery was at 90% dock at 25% . I'm curious if the scaling is alright or am I having a performance loss.
I noticed the dock discharging while it is not supplying battery to the table ( By the time my tablet reaches 70% for the dock to kick in to charge the dock has gone down to 98%).
The biggest power drain is definitely screen brightness though this IPS display seems really nice indoors no more than 20% brightness seems to be needed.
I would also like it if we could post your advice for a better battery life on these wonderful tablets to later on make a recollection of all and post them on 2nd Post
I'll try to keep up and be adding em there.
Well this is what I got in my head so far if your willing to post any other experiences or advice I would gladly appreciate it.
I'm somewhat of a complete noob, I'm here to learn and share my experience with other users.
Battery life tips.
1. If distance is not an issue use bluetooth tethering instead of wifi tethering. It consumes less battery on both devices.
2.Try using the brightness level you need not max it out like most people do.
3.If your an active user on wi-fi, turn on setting for wifi not go to sleep. Every time tablet goes to sleep mode it would be disabling and enabling Wi-fi wich in many devices this has proven to consume more battery than keeping an active connection.
This list will keep growing as more tips are posted.
This is a well timed thread, since I have been having battery issues and the tablet on its own is not the problem. For whatever reason, the dock and tablet together equals massive battery drain in sleep mode, where the tablet on its own only uses one percentage point over night. The majority of both batteries are drained if docked in sleep mode.
I charged the dock to full on its own and unplugged it and will check this evening to see status.
Tablet on own =
Tablet docked = :silly:
Well when I am not using my tablet for sleeping or working I usually just shut it down. Doesn't make sense to me to just always have it on. I'm usually away from it for long periods of time and it doesn't take long to boot up. Plus if I go to use it later in the day or a few days later I'm not looking for my charger because I fully charged it before shutting it down. I keep a laptop/computer mentality with it where if I'm not using it turn it off.

I do not think there is any firmware in the dock itself. I think it is a pure slave device that is controlled by the tablet. The tablet on own does not have a drain issue, but when docked they do together.
On my second dock now with same result.
The tablet and dock together ironically seems to have the same battery life in sleep mode as my Q2670 Lenovo 14" gaming laptop = bad I was hoping the dock and tablet combo would be just as efficient as an Android tablet on own and avoid having to cold start when using it (that seems so Windows to me).

I use it for a lot of things like Torrenting, college notebook, games, media, internet browsing etc. I give it its full use.
Asus already knows about this problems. Its due to bad software in the keyboard dock (yes there is software for it/ only Asus can access it.) Its actually B.S. the only fix is to send dock to Asus and pay shipping urself. And they'll fix and send back. Prob about a month later
Or you can use the tweeked build.prob like I did. Shuck will allow deep sleep while docked.
Deep sleep = no battory drain
Just be careful with changing build.prob

My battery life:
Docked and using fairly heavy- about ten hours
Docked and in sleep mode- Both batteries dead in 14 hours
Undocked and using fairly heavy about seven hours
Undocked for over 12 hours tablet = 98% Another time was 99%
Undocked, the dock went 24 hours = "100"%
Ironically, my problem is with the device docked in sleep mode. Two docks, two tablets- same issue. No info showing an app or media task causing it, so lower level bios issue. Both tabs newest firmware, no clue what the docks are/were. Have one each now.

That's sounds like a kf1, so wrong forum. I wouldn't worry too much, those things are practically unbrickable, even if the bootloader is corrupt up you can use usbboot to reupload it and it will work again. Think this might be useful in your case, but if it is bricked to the point you have to do that you would have to pull the internal battery and try connecting something to a contact point, there's details somewhere in the amazon kindle fire forum I think.

It died and ever since then it won't turn on. It worked fine, but like I said it died and ever since then it won't turn on.
mabe you need need to power it up with one of these, so it can get power again, i was reading somewhere that if your device dies to completely no power that it will do something that's kinda like what yours is doing now. and if you do own a Kindlefire its probably a good idea to buy one of these, or a factory cable, but this does the same think with just your normal cable attached to this adapter.http://shop.teamblackhat.info/Factory-Adapters-motadapt.htm

Whenever I plug it in the power logo turns orange. Doesn't that mean power is getting to it?

You need to post this in the proper forum. You need the Kindle forum not KFHD7. Tech questions don't belong in the general forum either.
