[Q] How to go from dual boot to triple boot? - Nook Color Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys, long story short I'm running a CM10 nightly (10.2-20130925-NIGHTLY-encore) on my Nook Color through SD (also stock on EMMC), and though it works and I like JB and all, JB doesn't support the wiimote for my hardcore gameboy emulation gaming. I'd like to still keep stock on my EMMC, but dual boot between CM7 & CM10 on my SD.
I've read about Racks' method, but don't understand exactly how to get from here to there. Any help/ideas?

[Q] Prepping for move from SD to EMMC - CM7

I am prepping to move my CM7 install from SD to EMMC and had some questions for you gurus out there:
1. Is it possible to dual boot stock unrooted 1.2 and CM7 on EMMC? I would like the freedom to be able to install CM7 nightlies without having to wait for custom-prepped dual boot roms, so it's not 100% necessary if that's not possible. Is it relatively easy to revert back to single-boot stock? (Is it just a question of resizing partitions and removing CWR?)
2. If #1 isn't possible, do I need to de-register my NC before installing CM7 to replace stock? I had read somewhere about an issue of nooks not being de-registered before doing something then people unable to re-use stock back. Vague, I know. 2. NM, I believe it was regarding rooting stock prior to registering with B&N. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.
3. Is the performance difference worth it to even install CM7 to emmc vs using it off SD? Currently using a decent 4k-write etc. Sandisk 16GB class 4 uSD.
4. Any issues/problems with running CM7 off EMMC vs SD (besides the obvious voiding warranty, etc.) The only thing I could think of would be if I accidentally damaged the NC by dropping it (or it just dying randomly) and being unable to restore to stock to avail of my extended warranty with Best Buy.
Thanks for any help, I'm loving the Nook Color.
I can answer #1, as I am doing exactly that. I followed this walkthrough:
http://www.mobileunderground.info/showthread.php?t=51217&p=84794
and it came out perfect. Puts CM7 as the main boot and stock 1.2 and the secondary boot partition. Now I can update the nightlies without a hitch. No need to worry about a special dual boot zip because the stock is in the secondary partition and isnt affected when doing the flashing the normal way.
Answer to
no 3. YES installing CM7 is a huge boost on mine
no 4 I think if you have hardware failure (ie. dropping it) and you cant turn it on, best buy wont be able to do it as well. They just replaced you with a new one. It happens to me they replace my nook with a new one the same day (I rooted and load froyo on my old nook)
Took the plunge 10 mins ago, and man my uSD card was no slacker but it's like a whole new machine! Thanks for answering --- decided to not bother dual booting, bluefire ereader is coming out sometime next month for android and that should fix my reading needs then, for now I'll live with terrible nook app (I don't read mags or kids' books anyhoo)
If you aren't dual-booting, what did you do?
I'm considering the same thing, I've got CM7 on the emmc but I haven't moved over the app data; does just copying /data work?

[Q] Triple Boot

Hey all,
I have my nook color on order and looking around on flea bay I see the following.
Triple Boot Rooted CM7 + Honeycomb Micro SD for the Nook Color
I would much rather find out how to do this myself, but can't see any guides etc relating to triple boot.
Any nudges in the right direction greatly appreciated.
No point in honeycomb... Just do a dual boot with CM if you want to keep stock
---------------------------------
Sent from my LG Optimus V using Tapatalk
I agree CM7 / Honeycomb / Stock is fairly pointless. However a triple boot could be useful under some circumstances. E.g. Stock and a stable CM7 plus an experimental boot for later CM7 or trying out other ROM builds.
For a while I ran what was effectively a triple boot by setting up a dual boot CM7 / Stock) on the emmc plus the ability to run a third ROM off the SD card. There are good instructions on how to dual boot the emmc. One can either have two boot images to select or create new system/data partitions to hold say Stock. There are zips that will do the basic partitioning and ROM copying work.
Having said that I did revert to a simpler system with one ROM on the emmc as I found I was not using Stock anyway and it was difficult to remember the sequences to do the various boots. Trying out initial ICS (he said hopefully) would be another reason for more flexible booting in the future.
Thanks much for the replies.
You hit my thought dead on.
What I was thinking of using this for is ..
1) leave stock rom alone
2) have SD card CM7
3) have another SD card bootable to 'test' (read ICS)...
or eMMC dual boot and a bootable SD card
3) have another SD card bootable to 'test' (read ICS)...

That is no longer a triple boot as you are talking about 2 separate cards.....
Frankly, you do not want to really do a true triple boot for ICS anyway as it means you will need to have 3 sets of all of your apps & settings.

Old CWM on EMMC....question about flashing

OK so my wife just got a nexus 7 so now I can play around with her nook color
It is on some older stock B&N firmware and has an old clockwork mod recovery (in the v3 area I think) that was installed way back when on the EMMC. Is it on for me to flash current ROMs and then update to CWM v6 once I am on cm or something?
Or do I have to update CWM first and then I can flash away?
Also, is everything a bootable SD now for this? Is it OK yo have CWM on EMMC?

You can use the old CWM to flash, but some of the older versions do not do a good job of wiping things before flashing the CM rom. And you really should wipe your data before flashing CM over stock. If it is version 3.2.0.1 or newer it is ok. You can get the latest CWM (v5.5.0.4, both in a bootable SD and in a version that can be flashed to emmc) in my tips thread linked in my signature.

Thanks A lot man. just got it booted up into CM7.2 just to use as a stable base. I'll update CWM here in a bit, but i just wanted something other than stock on there.
i never remember CM7.2 being so laggy though....just really used to JellyBean these days i guess...lol
but thanks again. and instead of starting new threads asking stuff, how is ICS on this thing? noticably smoother? faster, everything work (HD youtube videos, HD video playback, and Wifi are my main concerns)

It is better than a while back. (Not faster than 7.2) Non-opengl is still most stable. Still no HD, Netflix. Wifi works good.

Flashing problem
hey guys, its my first post here:
i tried to put CWM on my NC from here: ^^ wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/Barnes_%26_Noble_Nook_Color:_Full_Update_Guide ^^, The root was successful, but when i tried to flash CWMRecovery, its said that my SD Card need to be mounted. I didnt know what to do, so i format the SD in my Nook Color. After turning it off, it doesnt go on. Only when its charging or connected to the laptop, it starts first with the ^^raeding forever screen^^, then the the ^^n screen^^, then a yellow screen and then either it goes off or it tries to ^^clearing data^^ but stops by about 30 percent and goes off. I would be grateful for any help! FALLS JEMAND AUF DEUTSCH HELFEN KANN, UM SO BESSER!

Updated Nook HD+ vs. Booting CM

I've been using a N2A card to run CM on a Nook HD+. Yesterday I rebooted into the native Nook operating system and upgraded with Google Play support.
The good part is that the apps I got from Google Play are available. I even loaded Nova Launcher to bypass the B&N home screen. It is working well so far. The only trivial problem is that at times (such as going into the settings menu) it does ask again which home screen is wanted.
It also seems faster and more stable. I get a lot of crashes with the N2A card. (The seller did send me a beta late last week which I haven't had a chance to test yet). However, this is not a fair comparison. I have lots of apps set up with the N2A card and very few when booting into the Nook and there is an excellent chance that the crashes come from some of my apps. (I don't mean this to be criticism of N2A--just looking at pluses and minuses of each way of using the tablet).
The negative side of using the new B&N software is that apps other than from the B&N store and Google Play remain blocked. The rare program which I purchased directly from the software writer, along with the few apps I got for free from Amazon which I actually use cannot easily be used unless repurchased from the Play store. I'm also finding that several apps which I got onto the N2A card are listed as not being available for the Nook thru the Play Store. Obviously the advantages of rooting are also lost, but this isn't as important to me on the tablet as on my phone (other than losing the ability to sideload apps).
I'm wondering about the experiences of others who load rooted ROM's from sdcards versus the new B&N software. Any differences in performance from running the operating system directly from the Nook as opposed to the sdcard, and any differences in stability?
If you want to be able to install third party apps in stock, go to my HD/HD+ CWM thread and flash the Extras zip. It enables unknown sources so those are not blocked.
N2A gets their ROMs here so expect them to act the same.
Battery life is much better with stock. It deep sleeps a lot when the screen is off.

There's no problem installing third party apps when booting with N2A. I'm comparing the updated stock OS which now allows apps from Google Play but unfortunately doesn't allow installation of other apps. If it allowed for the installation of other apps I might give up on booting from the SD to get a rooted tablet and run it as a stock Nook.

I understood what you meant. I was saying you can fix that in the new version of stock by flashing that zip. And you can do that without rooting it.

How do you flash a zip with stock? It certainly doesn't allow that without modification (I would assume rooting).

Look at my HD/HD+ CWM thread linked in my signature. And yes, you can do it without rooting. You don't flash with stock, you flash to stock using a bootable CWM card. You can even use the CWM on your N2A card (assuming they left it there when they copied the ROM from here).

With Nook's 2.1 ROM for the HD+, is one required to revert back to stock ROM, update to 2.1, then reapply the Hybrid fix? I'm considering a straight up stock ROM install in any event given the deep sleep, stability and increased responsiveness reported by some, then reinstall the Hybrid SD.
I've read through this and other leapinlar threads (all excellent and worth the read in their own right) and if the procedure is explained, for those running the Hybrid HD, I missed it.
As kudos, Leapinlar's clear explanations, instructions and flashes are at the head of the class, any ROM class, and I've flashed plenty on various smartphones and tablets. Barnes and Noble would do well indeed to make him an offer he can't refuse!
Then again I'd selfishly prefer he'd refuse and continue on XDA.
I'm running CM10 Hybrid SD on the HD+.
Thanks.

Just got the Nook HD+ today .. reading all the info here and leapinlar .. thank you so much for providing all the fantastic apps to make the tablet even better. I am assuming once I burn the CWM img file you reference in your post (NookHDplus-bootable-CWM-6023-for-emmc-stock-4GB-rev3-(02.17.13).zip), and use CWM to install the Extras zip, I will be able to install Amazon Appstore on the stock Nook HD+. Also assuming this will also help me sideload apps to the stock Nook HD+.

What about performance?
How does the stock updated Nook home compare to CM10 on SD? Which one is faster? Lag? other differences?
I'm interested to see the GPU performance on the HD+. Can anyone show me the HD+ running something like Blitz Buggy or Into The Dead on youtube? I'm very interested in this tablet, at the $179 pricepoint, but I need to know that it can perform first.

Sorry, I can't upload a clip but I have just downloaded and tested Buggy Blitz and it ran perfectly even with the graphics options turned up to max resolution. I saw no hint of frame rate slow down even when the screen was very busy. I hope that helps

I ended up going from Hybrid to straight stock, partly because I accidentally factory reset my CM10 install rather than stock when setting up the update, but also to escape the need to reboot back and forth. I like stock for magazines, but was doing everything else in CM10, and half the time when I picked up the tablet it would be on the wrong OS for what I wanted to do. The worst shortcoming of stock is lousy multitasking without ICS/JB Recent Apps. The stock Recent Apps only seems to register apps/media launched from the stock home screen, which I tried to like but ultimately found too dumb to live.
I accidentally turned off my HD+ when it was downloading the 2.1 update. Now when I boot into stock, I can't get the device to update again. In device information, it just shows the device is updating, but nothing happens. What can I do now to update to 2.1 via OTA?
Also, I'm running Hybrid cm10, is there a way that I can boot into stock without removing the sd card?

To boot into stock without removing the SD, when the cyanoboot logo comes up hold the n key, it will boot to stock.
Unfortunately when you interrupt the download or flash, it thinks it is completed and will not try again. I suggest you download my plain 2.1.0 stock zip from my HD/HD+ CWM thread linked in my signature. You should be able to flash that with the Hybrid CWM since the zip is hard coded to install to emmc. Do not do any wiping with it though, as it will wipe Hybrid instead of emmc. Just flash is all you need to do.

Running stock coming from CM10 on SD card. Have Apex installed and it is running smoothly. I am rooted with the Extras installed. One issue is that the Nook Video doesn't seem to want to play my UV movies. They start but just sit there in the buffering state. I got VUDU sideloaded so its not that huge of a deal.

I agree with you about stock being too limited. I have been running stock exclusively now since the 2.1 update was installed. I just wanted to see if I could get used to it. I have to admit that I like it a LOT more than the older versions. There are some highly annoying things about it though, which may send me back into the arms of CM10(x).
One of the things I don't like is the inconsistently placed back button, and the fact that it sometimes Disappears entirely as in the stock email app. The only way out of there is the nook (home) button. And the recently used apps is also not nice.
I'm not sure yet but I am getting close to deciding to go with 10.1 on emmc. Just giving myself some time with stock to see if there's anything I'll miss. I like the magazines on stock but haven't been using it for that, so I'm not sure I'd miss it. (I do have a couple print subscriptions that I also get on the nook, but I can probably live without)
I guess the only other thing I need to do is compare the stock nook reading app with the regular nook for android and see if I'd miss anything there. Also, does anybody know if there is a nook magazine reader for android that could act as a replacement for the one on stock?
I just find it amusing that on the same day we got this much more usable stock ROM, we also got the ability to completely remove it from our devices and replace it with CM on the emmc. I wouldn't be surprised if by this weekend I'm running straight cm10.1 on the emmc. Stock still has just a little too many annoyances for me to be completely happy with it. I don't want to "settle".

Before flashing, did you do a full wipe?
CWM > Wipe data & factory reset, wipe cache, wipe dalvik cache, and wipe your system partition?
I have a Nook Color as well, but I'm running CM7. I read somewhere that your CWM must be version 6.xxx to properly flash CM10 based roms. I believe that is your problem. Btw, CM7 has better performance on this old device.
flashing
i actually never flashed clockwork. all i did was use winimage to partition the card, then just dragged and dropped gapps and cm 10.1.2 20130815 nightly. then it broke after installing a few apps. ive been looking for CWM to wipe everything. from wut i understand CWM wipes it COMPLETELY unlike the 2 stock methods i used before. its like it just wont boot from the sd card anymore. it installs the CM but after its done it just boots up to nook. if you or anyone can tell me where to find CWM it would be much appreciated. i dont understand their site layout and the youtube directions dont have working links for CWM. any ideas? and thx so much for the response. i know from reading now that cm7 was wut i shud have installed instead of the newer extremely unstable cm9 and cm 10.2.
ALSO, im reading about CWM software is related to SD card size? i only have a 32gb sd which is not mentioned in any of the tutorials on how to use CWM. does it rly matter?

Sure thing. Here are the instructions for flashing CWM to your internal flash using a microSD card. You'll need a microSD card reader for this. Look on Amazon for the IOGear MicroSD card reader, I bought it recently for $6 in total.
Read this thread thoroughly, it is simple enough. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=12797652
Also, I would suggest you install CM7 MiRaGe rom instead of stock CM7. It performs really well, and I have it overclocked to 1.2GHz stable. Here is the MiRaGe thread. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1344873

Nah, it works man. There's just a little bug you need to take care of. Go to the Mirage thread again, on the bottom of the first post, you'll see it says "wifi disconnecting? Read <link>". It's an easy fix. I had it too.
