Wifi Tether & KitKat - Droid Ultra General

Just a heads up...I had previously rooted, turned off the entitlement check for the built in wifi hotspot...and then unrooted so I could receive future updates (ie. KitKat). Well...the entitlement check got turned back on with the KitKat update.
I guess I'll have to hope that the SlapMyMoto (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2538896) used on the MotoX will work for the Maxx so I can root it again. Anybody try it yet?

When you do get rooted, here is the work around for hotspot.

Back to stock 4.0.4 ICS after new update 4.1.2 JB

I just want to let everyone know that it is possible to go back to ICS after updating to 4.1.2(9.16.6) I was rooted on 4.1.1 today, used ota root keeper to temp unroot and update to 4.1.2 and restore root. I just used Matts RazrHD utility 1.10 and went back to ICS 4.0.4 with no problems what so ever...
Im not sure why its stated that once you update to the newest release that you cannot go back, but its possible. So for everyone that wants to try out 4.1.2 and didnt want to be stuck, you can downgrade.
Hope this helps.
Also for everyone willing to try to downgrade please post results and type of phone you have, also the way you downgraded...
Device: Razr HD XT926 US Verizon non dev ed.
Original firmware 4.0.4(0.6.25)
Used RazrHD Utility 1.10 to downgrade
UPDATE: 3/21
I tried to downgrade again so I can post screen shots for everyone, and it did not work this time!!! Something must have changed/sync'd with my phone since the last time I downgraded that did not sync the first time. This has been a strange experience, but I would not have posted if I really did not have success the first time! It now gives errors, and I have tried everything I could imagine. My phone is not bricked and I am still rooted and have SS.
Preserving the option to downgrade to ICS is certainly important to me. Please, what phone do you have and from what country is your carrier (and thus, presumably, your version of stock ICS)?

I will add it to the OP
OK ... I've got to know. Why did you leave 9.1.2 immediately after upgrading to it? The knowledge that downgrading back to 4.0.4 from 4.1.2 is certainly valuable, but knowing what prompted you to upgrade and then so quickly downgrade would be valuable to know as well. Did the upgrade go smoothly? Did the upgrade not function as expected?

No it was fine... I had some weird problems with data switching, from wifi to mobile... Sometimes it wouldn't switch back to mobile after turning off wifi but that was only a couple of times. I really just wanted to see if it was possible to downgrade and was willing to do it even though I could of been stuck without a phone. I also like to start fresh by downgrading and wiping/formatting my sd card every month or so. Im back on 4.1.1 now and will probably go to 4.1.2 soon on my stock slot either way.
What I did was Remote into a DROID RAZR HD owner's computer and flash the ICS boot.img file through fastboot. It failed pre-flash validation so I flashed to new boot.img back on there and considered it a case closed.
If it works to go back by using the Utility, thats great news. However I am not going to remove the warning until I get more than just one confirmation on it.
great news thx

I have JB 4.1.2 now and using Matt's tool, I can't seem to get it to downgrade. It will run through the process, then it will just boot up into 4.1.2 again. It gets a couple failed things along the way.
Because I'm still weighing whether to upgrade to 4.1.2 can you tell me -- did you get 4.1.2 OTA or did you flash a file? If you did a "manual" upgrade, how is the experience? Problems? Anything not working, or not working right?
Ota, everything went fine during the upgrade. Just make sure if you are rooted to activate stock slot and wipe all other slots. I also restored a backup of stock jb 4.1.1 I made a week ago with all apps updated and working. Then just booted up and temp unrooted with ota root keeper and accepted the ota. Restored root after it booted. Only thing that was different from other updates is that safe strap did not work afterwards so I had to uninstall and reinstall.
I don't see much improvement, but I just got back to 4.1.2 late last night after downgrading so that's not much time to tell if the improvements are there. I have not tried HDMI out yet,but will later today.
If anyone else tries to downgrade to stock 4.0.4 ICS from this latest update 4.1.2, please post what type of phone you have and if it worked for you. Any problems...???

You don't have to wipe your rom slots.just go back to stock slot take the ota and then reinstall safestrap recovery (not the program).your roms will still be there and functional.

Don't know how I've missed all this "stock slot, rom slots" business. I've rooted Android phones and tablets, installed custom ROMs, I've still a noob but learning. Does "slots" refer to all that sdcard0, sdcard1, usbdisk_1.0 business in /storage? I don't think I'd seen that on any of my devices until I got my Maxx HD with 4.1.1. Or are slots part of SafeStrap (I have that too but only because it was on my phone when I bought it on eBay)? Upgrading to 4.1.2 sounds like it goes smoothly if you do it right and is a pain if you don't. Sure would appreciate a little guidance that's specific to this set of tasks.
Well I feel like an idiot. I got the leaked 4.1.2 and now it's literally impossible to downgrade. I hadn't installed any bootloaders/roots/ or anything before doing this, so now that my phone is 4.1.2, it's basically stuck there.
I've tried hours and hours of everything. If anyone has any idea on how to bypass this I'd be grateful.

I downgraded successfully yesterday, so I reported my experience... I have no reason to lie, otherwise I would not have posted this in the first place!
I had some problems with my comp. and the usb/moto drivers on win7 today so I was trying to fix that before I could try again. I attempted to downgrade/restore to ICS again and this time it did not work! I cant see how it worked for me yesterday and today it wont? I was so happy when it worked, but something must have changed within the last day which is odd. I always upgrade and root the same way, and I have tried everything today to get it to downgrade with no luck. My phone still works so it is not bricked, and I apologize to everyone, like I said it did downgrade yesterday with the RazrHD utility 1.10 and there were no errors what so ever. Now after it asks you to hit any key once the phone comes back on in FB errors come right up. Some things seem to flash though, which is strange and basically it does a factory reset on the 4.1.2 . SS is still installed, its still rooted, and works fine. I can even restore back up of 4.1.1 stock jb(which I made last night after I downgraded to ICS and was upgrading again) on stock slot after wiping data/cache/dalvic and system and boot up to show 4.1.1 and then either try to downgrade, which fails, or take the ota and/or flash 4.1.2 manually but it fails also. Then I just reflash a back up of 4.1.2 and its fine IDK... I also flashed Vit 1.9.3 on stock slot fine, boots etc. but still wont let me downgrade. Then I tried uninstalling all updated apps on 4.1.2 and clearing data on all apps, still nothing.
So for some reason it let me successfully downgrade yesterday, but not anymore. So like many people have said do not try until there's a safe way, unless you are willing to risk bricking.
I am downloading the 4.1.2 fastboot files now.

MK2 Update - Should I do it?

OK, I have 2 S4's
S4 1: Rooted running a stock with a few xposed tweaks.
S4 2: Stock and not rooted.
Should I do the MK2 update to both of them or just the stock one? Keep in mind I do plan on updating the stock one at some point very soon. . . maybe in a few weeks when I get some time.
If one is stock then update it to mk2 and the rooted one keep at wherever you are. I'm running stock mf9 rooted with wanam xposed mod and sort of like it. I too hope to update but I don't want to flag the Knox counter. If you already did that then update all. Mk2 I believe fix deep sleep issues with mja so you should update.
Sent from my SPH-L720 using Tapatalk
Yeah, the stock (un-rooted) one got the update but my phone (rooted on MJA) has not got it.
Guess I will just have to wait it out until some workaround comes out.
I'm having what I assume is the issue MK2 fixes, that my phone will occasionally be on when I unplug it from the overnight charge. Screen on, warm to the touch. This has only happened since I went to MJA.
If you're not having that issue, I would not bother as that is the only thing this release says it addresses, at least officially. I have not even done the update myself yet, as the problem only shows up once a week or so. I'm waiting to make sure all is well with it and some of the other mods get updated for it first.
Agreed. The update seems to only be a quick bug fix update, not a major release. It has been out for a minute now and I am not even seeing many ROMs pop up using it as a base, nor am I seeing many of the bigger Mods release versions yet. Not a huge update, only worth it if you are completely stock unrooted (because why not?).
I have 2 s4 as well. Both MJA stock rooted with hotspot and boot menu hacks and Phil s recovery. Knox 0x1.
Only one of them has gotten the MK2 notification. My girlfriend hates having the notification. I don't care to have the update. Haven't noticed any problems with MJA. How can I permanently get rid of the notification?
Has anyone come up with a way to upgrade safely just out of curiosity? With Knox and all?
I assume it's as easy as using Odin to get back to base unrooted MJA then pushing the update and rerooting. Just unsure what having Knox tripped may effect.

Just long press on the notification in the notification pane, click App Info and then un-check "show notifications". You can get there through settings too. Settings > More > App manager > All. It's the Google Services Framework app.

Thats what I did, does that mess with any other notifications I should be getting?
I have seen a few people say the update helped with a few things, but have not see any rooted ROMS around here with it added in.

Only from that application. All other apps will still notify you of updates, assuming you have not turned off the notification for it. It's an app by app thing.

[Q] VS98012B Stock Rooted, Can I Update?

So i have the Verizon version of the LG G2. A few months ago I decided to root and do the tether hack bypass. Lately i've been ignoring the OTA update to Kit Kat 4.4. I didn't want lose root and tethering capabilities. However, I'm tired of having to ignore those damn pop-ups to update that I'm willing to go ahead and update and lose root and tethering abilities. I am wondering if accepting the root would cause my phone to brick? The phone is completely stock with root and tether hack ONLY. Please let me know, thanks.

seeing as you are complete stock without custom recovery the ota can succeed no problem but the tether hack may trigger the "your device is suspected of rooting flag" and ota will fail

On a related note, anyone know how to disable the auto update feature and nag screen? This is an unrooted device.

I searched everywhere and there have been no reports of FoxFi not working after the most recent update.... hope that's a good sign. but I'm still too chicken to take the chance.
FoxFi was too much of a pain in the arse for me forcing the pin code to open the lockscreen.... None of the methods in these forums worked for me to go back to swipe to un-lock.
Just root it and install the Xposed framework and the XTether module to acivate wifi hotspot. Works like a champ. I was running safestrap with Alliance ROM but I loaded it into the rom slot instead of stock slot before realizing there were issues there.
I Odined back to stock NGC and rooted / Xposed. Figured I'll leave safestrap alone until he figures out the bugz.
I froze Security policy updates SPD_v2_1402_4_1 to get rid of security nag and SDM 1.0 to disable the VZW OTA notifications with TiBu. But of course, you need root and have to purchase TiBu key to freeze apps. Small price to pay if you are going to be doing a lot of custom work on your phone though.

I have always used a 4-digit PIN to unlock my phone, even prior to using FoxFi,
so it wasn't too much trouble for me.
When I had the Galaxy Note II rooted, all I did to block OTA update was renaming
SDM.apk to SDM.bak. (as well as FWUpgrade.apk to FWUpgrade.bak)
Is it different on the Galaxy S5?
Thanks!

Same. And you might want to freeze the security policy updater also.
I'm strongly considering rooting at this point. Looks pretty simple for this phone. This is the wife's phone, didn't want to hack it up like I do my Motorolas; but we've gone through some expense to keep the unlimited plans and inadvertently losing wifi tether (though frankly we don't use that much data) would suck.
It also appears that you can root after this update by downgrading, but to get this update after root you need Odin.
I'll give it a week and decide. Thanks for the help and ideas guys.
Foxfi works with update for me with swipe to unlock. Just connected my tablet.
Sent from my SM-G900V using XDA Free mobile app
Not to be the stereotypical new user who totally hijacks other's threads, but I bit the bullet and rooted the wife's S5 and did Chopstix' mods. I added a hotspot toggle widget so it's now a one-touch operation with no PIN required. XPosed is a really neat architecture. This is making me hate my unrootable Maxx.
Phone is rooted on the NE9 update. And Foxfi does indeed start on that update (which is still Android 4.2.2) but is now redundant.

[Q] JB 4.3, Kit Kat, 4.4, to Lollipop, HOW?

Hello Guys,
Any Help or Links to Related Threads will be much appreciated.
I have a Verizon NOTE 3, JB 4.3 SM-N900V MJE. I got it back around March 2014 I believe. I almost immediately Rooted it via Kingo. I do NOT have a Custom Recovery (although I would Love to install Safestrap) I also Froze the SDM app (updater app I believe) & Knox Notification app via Rom Toolbox.
Here is my Question, Since I still have Not upgraded to Kit Kat (although I want to via SexTape/Hashcode version) will I be able to Upgrade to Android L, Lollipop? Will I need to Upgrade to Kit Kat 1'st before Updating to Lollipop? I have been Real Nervous about taking the Plunge to Upgrade to Kit Kat (My old Razr got stuck in Boot Loop, Never got it out) but I want to have Android L at some point. If I Defrost the SDM & take the Verizon Update to Android L, I'm pretty sure I will lose Root, I basically want to know What do I have to do to get to Android L, Lollipop & keep Root with my Note 3 still running Rooted JB 4.3 at this time?

Android L is not an option right now and who knows what Big Red has in store for us once they release it. Knowing Verizon I'll have a new phone by the time it gets released for the Note 3. But if you want to go to KK see this post here....http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=55241731&postcount=2 and here....http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2787627
Thanks for the Reply, I already have the Link saved in my Favs, I'm just to scared to take the Plunge for fear of a Boot Loop.
I know that Android L is not an Option YET, but I've read on other Android sites that it should be released late November. Even if that doesn't pan out I want to have a Plan in place or at least know How or What my Options are as to getting it. I'm starting to Wonder will it be Better to Not receive the OTA when it does come out & wait for the Wonderful Developers here to make their own Version with Root, because I'm guessing if I did take an update I would lose Root & it will be a while until someone achieves it through Lollipop.

It is ALWAYS a good idea to wait for the good guys (the developers) to get and trst any new release.
And just because Google says lollipop will be out in late Nov doesn't mean we'll ever get it on the VerizonNote 3.
Until both of the above mentioned are true, no sense planning on anything.
And if you're scared to go to KK I'm not sure why you wouldn't be even more afraid to go to L. Just saying.

Yeah that's kinda what I was thinking. As far as Verizon releasing Lollipop, I've been reading about Verizon Note 3's & Android L on several Android sites, Android Central, Android Authority, etc. I know that we probably wont get the update as soon as I've read. Verizon is usually the Last service provider to release the updates. I did do a lil more searching & now I'm reading that it may be April, May, or June for us Verizon Note 3 owners. As far as a Plan, what I mean is I want to at least know what I will need to do or what my Options are to get Android L when it does come out. Which is why I'm asking so early.
#1 Can you go from JB to Lollipop? or Do you have to upgrade to Kit Kat then go to Lollipop? Or does everyone just Not know right now because it hasn't been released yet?
Oh & Yes I am scared to Update to Kit Kat right now but I will do it. I am going to. I think I'm looking for some encouragement that nothing will go Wrong. LoL. I will do it though. Its just I've never actually flashed any ROMS or anything. I had a Razr I rooted & I rooted my Note 3 almost immediately but as you know that process is not that hard or complicated. Did you Flash your Note 3 to Kit Kat? If so, How was the process for you? Any kinks? Setbacks? Any OE on it?
I do have another question you may be able to answer now that I am on the subject. Should I do a FDR before Flashing to Kit Kat??? Will that make the process more likely to succeed? Also I installed the Xposed Framework a couple months ago, will that have any effect on Flashing the Kit Kat? Do I need to uninstall it before going to Kit Kat & if I do flash Kit Kat will I still have the Xposed Framework if I do Not uninstall it? Also Do you have a Link to just install SafeStrap? I want to go ahead & get it installed & play with it a little before flashing Kit Kat. I'm gonna search for a Thread on it now. Dont worry about posting a Link I will find something. If you could help me with those other questions I would really appreciate it. Thanks for your replies. I'm a Semi Newb wanting to further my knowledge on this. I love this stuff. lol Thanks a lot!

If you could help me with those other questions I would really appreciate it. Thanks for your replies. I'm a Semi Newb wanting to further my knowledge on this. I love this stuff. lol Thanks a lot!

#1 no on knows at this point.
If you're going to restore to factory....then simply take the OTA to update to KitKat and then use Towel Root to root it.

I didn't say I was going to do a FDR, I'm asking if I did would it increase the odds of Nothing going wrong if I Flashed the ROOTED Kit Kat version that is on XDA. BUT I also didn't know it was Possible to Root Kit Kat. Back when I rooted my Note 3, It was Not possible to Root Kit Kat. NOW I'm curious, I thought if you do a FDR that you would NOT Lose Root? True or False? Because I'm thinking if I didn't lose Root, Did a FDR, accepted Verizon OTA TO Kit Kat, that Knox might would Trip. I don't know but I think it might. Do you know? The only other Negative to performing a FDR & accepting the OTA is I could Never go back to JB, & the SD card Problem Verizon Kit Kat was having but XDA version did Not have. Although they may have fixed that issue by now. I think it's just Best I dig back in there & do a lot more reading since I last did because so much could have changed since then. Thanks & Sorry for all the Questions. Again I said I'm a Newb

Hey, I've been thinking about what you said. The accept the Verizon OTA Update for Kit Kat, then Root with Towel Root. If I was to do that Right now & I'm Rooted would Knox Trip?
In order for me to do that, Would I have to UnROOT 1st?
If I do a FDR would I lose ROOT? I don't think I would but I'm not sure.
Accepting the Verizon Update & Rooting afterwards sounds easier than, Installing SafeStrap, & Flashing KIT KAT. I'm not sure if it would be, but it does sound easier.
Which is Better? Verizon Stock Kit Kat vs XDA Kit Kat version???
Thanks
