This phone seems to be very picky about chargers. Some will only charge when the phone is powered off, and some not at all. What is going on??
Chargers that work:
- Computer USB port
- Car stereo USB port
- HTC
Will charge if I power off the phone:
Blackberry (500mA)
Sony digital camera (500mA)
Won't charge at all:
- iPhone (white cube)
- 4 different car cigarette lighter chargers, including one rapid charger designed for any (including Samsung) phones (3A)
The only ones I have at home that work are the blackberry and Sony, and they charge too slowly (500mA). Sometimes, the phone display will show that it's charging, but it just slowly dies. I don't know what this phone wants. Any ideas?

my other devices have no problems charging with these methods

HI friends after my last charger got lost I am looking for another charger but as I am not able to find a right one I am forced to charge it with my PC USB. May I know which is the right charger I mean the voltage because I have a mp3 player charger with USB plug. Can I use that it differs in the voltage up to a very less extent. Is there any harm of using duplicate or different companies charger. I have heard that motorola charger works with HTC devices as well. So plz guide me friends with Your valuable comments..Cheers
The output on my charger is 5v--- 1000mA. I have a similar charger for my Motorola S9 stereo bluetooth headphones and use this to charge my phone but this is 5v---850mA and I have noticed that although it charges the phone sometimes the charge icon does not light up.
I sometimes use the phone charge to charge my bluetooth GPS but although it charges fine the GPS won't work at the same time as I am charging, which it will do with a PC USB lead or even the Motorola charger.
I would try and get a charger that puts out 1000mA. (1A)

Yes, very much agree with that. Non official chargers are OK as a stop gap until you get the correct 5v, 1000mA one. Some quirky things can happen using lower power ones. (the mini usb connector is wired slightly differently and this can have some odd - but not usually damaging effects).

I was using my Touch HD today as GPS navigation in the car and i noticed that the phone stopped charging after some time using the HTC car charger. The problem was not a bad connection in the mini USB - I noticed that when I connected the charger the phone led (on the power button) blinked orange then green then off. Does this mean that the battery/phone is overheating so it will not accept the charger?
I turned the phone off for some time and then used a different car charger (normal mini USB so i guess it had only 0.5A output) and there were no problems. The phone was charging for the rest of the trip. However, since this was a normal USB charger, it was very slow (+10% charge after 2+ hours of driving).
So my question is what does a orange-green light mean on the Touch HD and should I avoid the car charger when using GPS? Thanks!
current could be from 0.5amps to 90MegaAmps
amps are not pushed they are drawn your phone will never draw more then it's cable of handling
The phone distinguishes a HTC charger and draws more current from it. The TBattery app shows 400mA current when using a HTC charger and ~180mA when using a normal USB cable or USB charger (even one that is rated 1A).
I guess the extra current from the HTC charger and the fact that the phone was in a cradle contributed to the overheating. I will avoid using a HTC charger in the car from now on unless the phone is already close to 100% battery.
Hello, I've just bought an emergency charger for my Kaiser. It takes the power from an AA battery and gives the USB voltage in the output. It works great with my Mio A 501, but doesn't work at all with the Kaiser. I did a quick search and found this in a discussion about car chargers:
Are you using the HTC charger or an OEM one?
The HTC charger works all the time the OEM ones don't - the reason being that if you use a normal Mini USB cable, the handsets will only take a charge if there is an indication of a data connection (either than gprs or the cable) - otherwise it won't take a charge.
You can apparently solder a couple of wires together on a normal mini USB cable - but I wouldn't know where to start on that!

Now I've already heard of that, for example, a Play Station Portable needs the data wires in the USB grounded in order to charge. Is it the same with Kaiser? (putting three wires together isn't a big deal) Or is there an easier way how to make it charge?
So, I gave it a try and soldered the data wires with the ground wire. But when I try to charge the Kaiser, a yellow led starts to glow (which it didn't with the original cable) and, after a minute or two, the led goes off and Kaiser stops charging. When I turn the Kaiser off and then plug the cable in, the yellow led doesn't go off. However, when I turn Kaiser back on to check the battery meter (after about half an hour), I find out that the battery didn't take any charge at all. So, could anyone tell me what the problem is?
thanks, Mike
PS.: Adding some photos of the wires...
Probably because of the voltage...
Hey!
Have you checked the output voltage of this charger? Standard charger outputs 5V. If yours outputs less - the battery won't charge; if outputs more - you may "burn" your PDA chipsets
5V - 5.5V is safe range.
I found this on thinkgeek.
http://www.thinkgeek.com/gadgets/cellphone/b43f/
It says for iPhone, but sure it would work just fine with other devices that have issues.
had a same problem but using it in the car...
when i got my tytn2 i immediately bought a car charger and the salesman told it's an original one, said output 5v 1A.. when using in the car it charged for a minute or two and went off... than i got from ebay a micro usb 1A charger (used for iPhone too) and tried in the car-> it work flawlessly
When I charge the Streak, I cannot use the Streak well.
When I try to do something, the screen is jumping to other screens by itself.
Anyone this problem?
You have to use the Dell charger and cable, not anyone else's...
Tom.
maybe you have some wire near the device. magnetic interference.
what i have succesfully used to charge my dell streak :
-car charger from motorola 1 Amp with converterplug
-normal car charger (most of them are 500mA which is fine)
-my htc charger (1 Amp)
-other usb wall charger (500mA)
-pc
-hama usb reader self powered.
-usb port of car-stereo
-usb port of a philips stereo
-usb port of panasonic/sony/philips tv
in general any usb port will do fine to charge. the only time one needs a 1 Amp charger is when the battery died out and it wont charge on usb anymore and wont turn on.
I see that issue when I'm plugged into the computer. I can tell how bad it is because I can't even use swype - my blue 'trail' goes crazy all over the place and its tough to scroll/switch screens. But... don't have that issue when plugged into the wall charger. Maybe a bug? I know there are plenty of them with stock 1.6...

Yes, I am using the original Dell cable and charger.
same here, and this problem I found also on my Motorola Droid X....I dont know about samsung galaxy S since I have sold it
but for sure, Motorola Droid X and Dell Streak have that problem while charging
do you have it attached to a self-powered hub ? if so that could be it. try attach it to pc usb directly.
The streak goes crazy if you are using it from a non harmonised power supply - I have tested this personally and find that the capacitance of the srceen is affected if the power supply does not have a perfect flat signal.
This commonly occurs with switched mode power supplies, which can impart a 50Hz voltage drop-off "click" into the signal - laptops, small footprint desktop PC's, as well as the 12V-230V power invertors used in cars to get a mains socket. This caused by the way it rectifies the AC signal into a DC signal and there is nothing you can do about it.
An oscilloscope shows it well, but I doubt everyone has one of those in the cupboard under the stairs...
Simple answer - change your power supply, or don't charge the streak this way!
Hi all, just came 3 days ago from an htc hd2, and so far I am more than happy with it.
I have only one complaint and maybe you guys will help me sharing your experience : I can't charge this phone in my car while using gps.
It seems that the power adapter is not powerful enough to charge the phone screen on.
The car charger has a 5v 1000ma output, more than the regular wall charger provided by Samsung and it was working well before with my HD2 so I have no clue about this problem.
Did you experience that issue too, else can you share what car charger do you use?
try to buy new standard car charger with micro plug.. 13 eur and you will be saved..

Charger doesn't matter unless the phone is dropping into USB charging mode - phone limits to around 600-650 mA by default.
Custom kernels can bump this limit up for I9100 users. I777 users are screwed - we've got a crippled charger chip.
I had the same problem, I used the samsung one, useless, so I used my iPad charger, which is 2A, and charges the iPad quick, still useless. We drove from Bathurst NSW, down to Melbourne, about 10 hour drive, plugged in all the way using GPS, and about an hour from home, the connect to charger warning came on!! So once I stopped GPS, it started taking charge. Looks like when the phone is in use, it draws more then it takes charge, plus I read somewhere on here the phone is limited on the charge it takes, so using the 2A does nothing different then the stock 500mA charger.
I always had this problem with my Nexus One, although they are different phones, the problem is the same, uses more power then it can recharge in USB mode.
After trying 3 or 4 different charges I remember that I found one ultra-cheap 'made in taiwan' from a street seller that worked very well.... so it's kind of a lucky shot!
good luck!
Im using a genuine Samsung SGS2 charger and I can charge and run Sygic just fine. I started my journey with 80% and 40mins later I was up to 91% when I stopped and got out. (not in aeroplane mode..)
Very interesting feedbacks... So that confirm that is clearly not a matter of output amperage power.
It is now the same problem on the galaxy tab 10.1, for quickly charge this tab you need the Samsung compatible usb adapter.
It can be likely with a tab bringing a proprietary plug, but I didn't thought it will be the same with a Samsung phone bringing a regular micro usb plug. Quite frustrating and disappointing!
I will search around a micro plug car charger as suggested by redzion, but actually I don't clearly see the difference with my usb charger + a micro usb cable.
Double post, sorry.
If I use the usb cable from my cd player I have the same problem but if I use the official Samsung car charger Ithe only problem I have is the phone getting stupid hot

Oh Samsung, when you will understand?!
Samsung DOES follow the USB charging standard - it goes to its highest current setting when a charger that follows the standard is connected.
Note that iPad/iPhone chargers do NOT follow the standard - Samsungs will treat these as USB hosts and limit to 450 mA instead of 600-650.
Modified kernels can increase both of these values on I9100s.
The only thing Samsung really did **** up is counting screen/CPU current usage against the charge current limits - that's just stupid.
So the charger has smarts. On the i9000 factory chargers, the data pins were bridged. Bridging these pins manually on a USB cable when connecting to a USB source (such as a PC) enabled full current charging. You can see this in Settings -> About; it will say either USB or AC charging.
Do you think this is the case with the i9100?
I don't condone testing this theory on your i9100. Increasing the max current via custom ROM may be a safer solution.
I had the same problem. Two things fixed it for me:
1) I bought this charger: Sony Ericsson AN300 Micro USB 10€
2) I am using a custom kernel now
Any charger that is rated at 1000mA or more (per port) will do just fine. The problem is the cable - you need a quality microUSB cable, or it won't provide all the juice you need. I had the same issue, and I swapped three chargers until I found the real culprit.
Try with the charger you have now and the mUSB cable that was in the phone box - it should work well with that one.
I just press the power button to turn the screen off. when i need the sat nav i press the power and it still tracks you so there is no delay. With the screen off it does charge.
same problem

You are right, but even if it is better than nothing the charging time is still a big problem.
Yesterday I drove for at least 40mn phone off. Arrived to destination, I turn the device on: it charged only from 0 to 5%
I would like to test the mariusi theory concerning the Samsung micro usb cable, unfortunately on my SgsII box I just have a wall charger, no a microusb-usb cable.

Is there a way to know before buying if the charger respect this charging standard?
I have some cheap usb chargers here and no one is a fast as the one provided by Samsung.

Maybe for safety purpose? Gps phones can become very hot behind the car glass.
Samsung are trying to "encourage" you to buy only their official accessories. To do this they've wired something differently in their chargers and cables. This "problem" exists on the Galaxy Tab too and can be solved with this adapter...

It's cheap and turns a trickle charge into a full charge. I don't know the specifics of what they've done, but their USB charging just isn't the same as most others manufacturers.

Great find.
Pretty sure it just bridges the data pins.
