[Q] No sd card recognized (VZW Galaxy Note 3) - Verizon Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Been using my 64gb SanDisk Ultra sd card since I had my Verizon Note 3 with no problems, then all of a sudden my Note 3 just stopped recognizing the card. I can take it out of the phone put it in my pc and wallah it works works great, take it out put it back in my Note 3 and nothing. Has anyone had this to happen to their phone?

Does your phone recognize other cards or does the problem just happen with the SanDisk?

Yes it does, I even put it in my PC and got the same results, I'm trying to retrieve my data by using a program that ScanDisk provides via an Internet download.

I have purchased a new 64gb ScanDisk Ultra Extreme to replace the old one so hopefully I want have that problem again. Would like to recover my data from the old sd card though. Have not had any success with the software from ScanDisk....

You should contact SanDisk. They should replace it. It apparently had happened with SanDisk cards before just read some of the reviews on Amazon. It might have been a bad card, or maybe this phone has a tendency to kill SanDisk cards, which I hope isn't the case but someone else said the same thing happened to them, having the card for a while and then it being in this phone for only one month, and poof, stopped working.

I have a Sandisk 32GB Ultra Class 10 and it doesn't doesn't work well with it, message keep popping up saying the removable card is mounted then unmounted, then it's dead, I returned and got a replacement, my suggestion is to get Samsung branded, even though it's more expensive, but more reliable.

why go 32, get most you can. not much difference in money compared to phone price
sandisk has had issues for some
we just put 2 64gb ones in our phones. worked right off, no formatting. perfect
from amazon
my point was there are hundreds of reviews out there on the cards and ones by s4 users, check them out if you haven't
I have the 64 gig sandisc in my s3 its my second one because the first one was fried... Same thing happened to my brothers 32 gig Samsung...

I have a Samsung microsdhc plus 16gb. No problems so far.
I've been using a SanDisk 32Gb ultra class 10 for about 6 months, originally with my galaxy s3. In March, my S3 kept trying to repair the card, wouldn't read the information. Even when it finished repairing it will unmount. After restarting the phone, same thing.. Repair and unmount. Brought it to my laptop and it could barely read the information on the drive.
All My info was there but it took forever to load anything. I format the card on my Pc and it's been working ever since. Everything is backed up, so it wasn't that big of deal. Though I did lose some pictures from that day due to my sync schedule.
Using the same card now in my s4. No problems yet.
Edit* I have antivirus on my phone and computer.. Scan showed up clean on both. So I have to assume either just a bad/corrupt file or the sdcard itself had an issue. But I did find others having issues regarding the same card I have, but I read mostly 'fried' or dead cards. Mine didn't die.

Note 2 killed my Lexar 32gb Card AGAIN!

I've read loads of internet threads and other reports about Samsung phones (GS3, Note 2 etc) killing SD Cards from various manufacturers, so when my Lexar 32GB card (that I had used previously in my Note 1 since I bought it!) died unexpectedly I thought maybe it was the card.
Luckily Lexar are guaranteed for 10 years so I sent it back and they sent me a brand new one in return. But....
JUST THREE WEEKS LATER my Note 2 reported, after a reset, that the card was damaged and needed formatting - losing all the data on it AGAIN!
I can't see two cards both being faulty to be honest - it MUST be my Note 2 suddenly killing them. There seems to be no answer from Samsung about this - they just keep quiet. So I thought I'd post this and also a poll here to see how many cards have been killed/data lost by the Note 2 on XDA.
Sandisk. 'Nuff said.
Haven't tried a Samsung card but seem to get great reviews mostly. I haven't had a lexar fail me yet but on the other hand haven't used one enough to really push it. Tried lexar because they're usually the fastest or close to it.

I have been using lots of MMC/SD/microSD cards since they came out and I got several from various makes and price brackets (top-end Sandisk and Kingston included) failing on me over the years. Since I got my OG Note, almost 2.5 years ago, I have been using high-end microSD cards from Samsung only, class 10 32GB ones at first and then UHS-1 64GB ones since I got my Note II 6-7 months ago. I have yet to have a problem with them.
I have read that certain Sandisk cards had a manufacturing problem (admitted by them) which got them failing on some devices like the Note II, you may search for it.
Anyway, the only smartphone that I would buy (again) *today* is the Note II and the only microSDs that I buy today are Samsung's top-end ones.
I don't think your note killed anything, simply the card died - it probably would have died in any device; or maybe not if the device that is not i.e. heating as much as note etc. But I really can't believe there's an error in note that kills cards.
I.e. my 32gb died in my GPS, what should I have said "my Mio killed SD card!"? No, the card simply died, end of story. They manufacture them in such quantities that it's normal.... Remember when the CD-Rs first appeared? I still have some like 10-15 years old and they work just fine. Nowdays I burn a DVD and in a week I try to read it and it is unreadable! And I'm not using some crap brand. So I wouldn't blame your Note Simply mass production....

hello Londres guy, I hope you can understand my french.
So, my Note 2 have killed once my sd card, and I found something intéressant, that day I have download a pic of dogs from reddit, but I did't finish that, It was cancel by myself,
BUT I found the server was still working, the server which made from download, so my phone has been hot, and the batterie has gone very rapide, and the day after, my sd card is dead.
I took a look the server which is named multimédias have took 60% my batterie, it si why my note2 is hot, and i think is him, who writes alway in the sd card For a day and half, who make the sd dead fastly.
So maybe it is reason for the Sudden Death too, I mean if this server writes in the eMMC without stop, he can make the eMMC dead.
---------- Post added at 10:44 AM ---------- Previous post was at 10:40 AM ----------
for now I use my note2 very careful, I take a look the tasks, or the page de la batterie, if the server be here, I must make this server to default, and if i will download something, make sure it in the sd card, i dont want my emmc be broken.
I dont think the phone is responsible for killing sd. Might be a specific sd card problem.
Im Using a 32gb Samsung class 10, they are not very expensive in amazon. I used to have Sandisk cards with no problems.

I also lost a SanDisk Class 4 32 GB card in my Note II, but it's interesting that I can still use the card as a USB memory through an adapter. Meaning, Windows recognises it without a problem as soon as I stick the memory in and check disk doesn't show any errors or bad sectors. On the other hand, no phone is able to recognise the memory anymore, no matter the phone manufacturer.
I did not want to risk again so I bought a 64GB Samsung UHS-1 card, factory exFAT formated. No problems so far, I've been using it for couple of months now. The only thing I noticed is that the write / read speeds are far below the specified ones, although these cards should be very fast.
Buy a Kingston card, they have lifetime warranty. I had issues with a 32gb card and got a new one free from them.

Did you try to repair the file system via CheckDisk utility?
File system gets corrupted if there is some error writing or power loss during file operations, or you disconnect the card.
Usually all the data is there, only the partition table gets corrupted.
Go to command prompt and type:
chkdsk /X /F <SD card drive letter on your system:>
my device has killed 3 (yes three!) 64gb class10 sandisk cards 2 got replaced and the third one.. i m still trying to make it work. Last measure, i did was formatted the factory formatted empty card with a prog called sdcardformatter and reformatted same in twrp recovery. For somedays its working but still getting 2-3 sdremoval error messages
now i will try mrlo suggested chdsk method
Same case with me on Kingston 32gb card
my Sandisk 32Gb mem card also died unexpectedly after a couple of months.
It just keeps automatically ejecting on its own

There are lots of instances of this happening on the Web. Cannot be a coincidence. Seems it is worse after latest update. Some seem to think the voltage is to high or fluctuates and kills the controllers.

SD card unexpectedly removed...?

SD card unexpectedly removed... The heck does that mean? I didn't take it out nor jar or drop the phone. That just popped up and I didn't have access to the SD card until I rebooted. It's a 128gb samsung evo microsd that was formatted in the X. Anyone else have this issue?
Sent from my XT1575 using XDA Free mobile app
No issue here. Could be a sim tray or contact issue. 64 gb card forget which brand. Sandisk pro I think.
I'm having the same issue. Love this phone! But this is getting a little irritating
I have not had this issue. Been using the phone for two weeks with a 64 GB Samsung Pro+ card in it since day one.
I just boxed my turd up and sent it to moto today. The bootloader was unlocked but flashed back to stock unrooted, hoping for the best. They gave me a code to get a new one made...it said it will be here Oct 1st.

Anytime I had this issue previously, it was 100% the card.

Sent from my Nexus 6 using XDA Free mobile app
So, far I've only had it twice in the 3 weeks i had it
Like other folks stated, it has to do with the SD card. If you purchased a SD card from eBay or something generic, you are bound to have this issue. I think it has to do with the flimsiness of the plastic. Borrow a good brand card from someone and give it a try. Chances are issue will be resolved. I had the similar issue which was resolved by purchasing a genuine San Disk card.
It is not necessarily the card. I have a genuine 128GB Sandisk microSDXC (exFAT file system) that's very fast. After no problems for several days, the Pure gave me the message that the card had an incompatible file system and asked if I wanted to format it. I reset several times, got the same message twice, then after that the Pure didn't recognize that a card was even present. I pulled the card (and SIM!?) and reinserted it, and it works fine again. Only catch is that now all the files on the card have that day's date and the time I reinserted the card. Bizarre and very troubling. My plan is to format the card in the phone and reload it from the backup on my hard drive.
I had this problem for a while on my old Samsung GS3, and it turned out to be a firmware issue on the phone that Samsung never addressed. I hope that it's not the same case here.
same problem here. i use my old sd card for two or three weeks. this card works fine. its a 8gb sandisk micro sdhc. now i bought a new 64gb card (SanDisk MicroSDXC Action SC 64GB Extreme 90MBs SDSQXNE-064G-GN6AA; this one: http://amzn.com/B013CP5C02) and got this problem. yesterday the replacement card from amazon arrived but the problem persists.
This is my 3rd moto x (pure) edition, the first 2 I had no problems with using the same card, so I'm kind of assuming it's the tray on this particular phone, but I'm going to try and format the card and see what happens
I have seen this before on multiple "tray" devices... place a couple layers of scotch tape on the back of the card and reinsert it, adds just a bit of pressure to the connection... often enough since tolerences are pretty tight on these things.

SD Card

Not sure what happened, but now I cannot write to my SD card, or create folders..... Is there some setting perhaps that got messed up?

I agree. Sounds like a corrupted/bad SD card.
My brand new 64GB SanDisk got corrupted as well. Have another one from a few years ago (16GB) that still works fine.
Try taking it out of the tray and putting it back in. For me at least, it sometimes detects the files long enough to get them copied over.
I have gone through 5 64gb sandisks and I've made them replace it Everytime . Even though they've had many people write on their site that their galaxy phones and their sandisks 64gb cards were crapping out. My 128 has done well so far. And some 32gb also are still working but my note 2, note 3, kept killing 64 cards where it wouldn't allow write, then it just started corrupting all the files slowly by changing the names to crap symbols.
I hate them 64gb sandisks
That's why I rock an Evo.

Happened to me as well. Brand new 64gig lexar. I was trying to cast a tv show. LocalCast was, well being LocalCast and I installed allcast. Then... Poof.. It was gone. How to mount it on my PC and reformat. Lost a lot of stuff. Oh well.
Same with sandisk 64gb, had it it in my m8 had to get it replaced and still haven't opened the new one. Bought a sandisk 200gb. I think I was able to save some pics but even u would take a pic, it wouldn't be there. I lost alot of good family pictures because of that card. I see why they offered a lifetime warranty

Im having issues with sd card with camera saving to sd card. Also when i crop a photo it won't save. Using my 256 card from my Note 7 that cane with phone. Never had a issue on the Note, with the V20 km.about to just use it for the DAC only n go back to Note 5. Permissions in Google have been charged to give permission but still cant saved edited photos
I recently had a Samsung sdxc evo class 10 fail (suddenly couldn't write anything despite having 80gb of free space left).
Did manage to copy the data off of the card but I ended up having to get a new card, this time I went with SanDisk class 10. So far so good.
Wonder if there is a defective batch going around (I purchased mine about a year ago)

I have the same card from Samsung,( it was free with the Note 7). Unfortunately, I'm still having problems playing videos. I've tried VLC and MX, but both only play some of the files from SD. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Definitely have to format. If you'll notice the card is assigned I don't know what to call it and filesystem may have been handled differently. I had to do same. Took time but works proper.

I solved this by moving the SIM from the main slot to the side slot (dual SIM model). Weird thing was that anything < 64 gig would read fine, larger SD cards wouldn't. Only thing i can think of is a design flaw whereby the SD card is getting pushed up and not making contact properly due to the SIM underneath it. Try taking the SIM out and seeing if it will read/format/re-read it then?

I have an ATT LG V20 that experienced the same symptom so I tried similar procedure by remove SIM card and insert the micro SD then boot up to see if it would first see the SD card and it did, after that I shutdown and reinsert the SIM card and everything is still working.
