It is not important....you can flash a new rom directly, just wipe data, cache and factory settings....before flashing a new rom..
But some roms required be on stock rom.So I think flashing stock before flash any custom rom is good...for your phone..
 DON'T FORGET TO GIVE THANKS IF I HAVE A BIT SUCCESS TO HELPING YOU
Depends on the rom actuallly
Suppose the Rom is Something like the monochromatic windows rom >> then u need to switch back to stock
and other roms which contain only the theming files for the stock bases u can just flash them
but for better installation of the roms make sure u go to the CWM >mounts and storage>format /system/
and then follow the usual procedure of installing the rom
what this does is that it deletes the previous "System" directory so when u install a custom rom .
then the custom rom's system directory will be copied to the device making it like a clean installation
and as techno said dont forget to wipe data/factory reset and the cache partition

Can i backup my official samsung rom?

I have the international i9500 and i wanna install a custom rom (AOKP to be exact)
now my question is can i backup the official samsung rom and then return to it using recovery?
if i can so which recovery should i use? (CWM or TWRP)
i'm asking that because i couldn't backup the official samsung rom on any other device i had (S1 and S2 i9100) but maybe i did something wrong!
Anyone?

Afaik I don't think you can literally backup any ROM. U have to have a flashable copy of it be it .tar or .zip and just backup apps

You can try to backup in newest CWM.

You can do this from both type of recovery. Take backup on external sd card and save it to some where on HDD.
Yes flash a custom recovery (cwm etc) and backup from within there. If you ever need to reinstall, restore it also from cwm recovery and flash stock recovery and that's it. Burn to fully stock.

I think yes.. you can back up.. (maybe Im not sure with this one)
But before restoring your back up from stock and you are coming from aokp make sure that you flash first stock rom in odin to avoid problems..
The answer is No, you can't back up your stock unrooted rom.
You can however root it, install a custom recovery and backup the rooted rom on your phone. You will need to check if it was backed up on your internal drive 1st before flashing as you will loose it if you wipe the data on your phone.
You can also go to Sammobile.com and see if they have your rom there. Go to the firmware part then check your firmware at the top . It will ask you for you device (I9500) and country then give you the latest firmware available. You will need to register to download these roms...

You don't have to be rooted to flash / use a custom recovery. Therefore he can backup without rooting his device.
I did it myself before I rooted / customised my stock rom.

After rooting, I backup my stock rom to a external card before I start messing around. Just restore using CWM when u have a corrupted S4.

questions to original ROM / root

hey guys,
i ve rooted my nexus 10 and it runs with CM 10.2
i think about to flash the original kitkat rom from google.
but i´m not sure what will happen with my custom recovery.
in my opinion i can flash the new rom (zip file) and reboot and the original rom will not erplace the recovery with the original one, right?
also by reseting the device the recovery won t delete the backup, right?

Need help returning to stock from CM 7.2

I am currently running one of the CM 7.2 modifications and it does not have an option to launch the update frocess from official update package.
The phone is U8800 PRO. Sadly, I don't have a nandroid backup, it would be dead simple to flash stock ROM backup files and I wouldn't be writing here
So, what can I do? Maybe some of you running stock ROM with "Launch update from SD card" button can share your nandroid? Any advice woudl be appreciated.

download stock gingerbread ROM. create a folder called update on your external SD card. put the update file inside that. now replace your cwm recovery with stock gingerbread recovery. power off phone then
vol up + power button, stock recovery should automatically install the GB update.
*critical that you use stock GB recovery.

Procedure to go back to MIUI from CM13

Hi. I'm using the 18/Redmi2Prime and I was thinking of reverting back to MIUI and I'm on CM13. I'm kind of confused with all the threads here because it's been a while since I was active here in the forums. Can't I just flash the MIUI ROM over CM13 using TWRP 2.8.7 with a clean install?
I wanted a rooted lollipop miui hence I am reluctant of choosing this. And I donno which ROM to choose either. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Grab a copy of the stock recovery from here, and follow the instructions to install it onto your device. Basically, download the file, extract the .img file from it, and install the .img file using TWRP. Then boot to recovery.
Then, download a copy of the official MIUI ROM (beta, release or otherwise), from here, rename it as update.zip, copy paste it to your SD card (internal/external), and from the stock recovery, wipe all existing data (cache and user data - SD card can stay). Install the update.zip from the recovery from the options shown.
Done.
Additional notes -
1. If you are plan to go back to a custom ROM, then install a pre-lollipop based MIUI ROM, or backup your EFS, Modem, Boot partitions prior to wiping the existing recovery - this will save you a lot of trouble, and perhaps opening another thread.
2. It is preferable to download the MIUI ROM and rename it as update.zip before you restore to stock recovery, should anything go wrong down the lane. (That is, without a ROM installed, and the computer just not willing to recognize your device, you might end up in a small soup - you cannot access the files on the phone using the stock recovery easily.)
3. If anything goes wrong, check for instructions on how to install the MIUI ROM using fastboot.
Hey thanks for the quick reply. Will do the mentioned and will get back to you if need be. Thanks again!
But wait. It isn't prerooted right?
