Straight copy of jcase's post here, with only modified binaries.
jcase's words:
Please do not donate to me for this, it is not my original work. If you want to donate, I suggest finding a way to donate to fi01 (not aware of a way or if he accepts them) or donating to a charity. It is the holiday times, maybe a toys for tots or something similar. I know a lot of ppl dislike the salvation army, and I can't stand up with some of the things they do, but their toy donation program is good and they do get the toys to kids who really have no other option, maybe drop off some new toys? May be food to a food bank?

File kindlehd2013_root.zip contains 3 files, exploit, rootme.sh and su.
The file root_script.zip contains the same 3 files, plus adb binaries for linux and windows, and a windows script.
adb push su /data/local/tmp/
adb push rootme.sh /data/local/tmp/
adb push exploit /data/local/tmp/
adb shell chmod 755 /data/local/tmp/rootme.sh
adb shell chmod 755 /data/local/tmp/exploit
adb shell /data/local/tmp/exploit -c "/data/local/tmp/rootme.sh"
Install Instructions:
Download the root_script.zip, and unzip it to a folder.
If you are on windows, run the runme.bat file, and you should be done.
On linux, navigate to the folder you unzipped the files in using the terminal, and run the commands above.
You are rooted!
If you want to control access to root, I reccomend you install supersu or superuser, just sideload the apk or install it from 1mobile market. On superuser you may need to update the su binary and restart your kindle. Otherwise every app that requests root will get it.
Thanks to slayer615 for the script!
Can confirm it, root works on latest 11.3.1!
Very good job!
could you write a quick tutorial please? =)
Created a small automated script:
https://db.tt/zPGylWuQ
root3d on XDA werked 4 mi!
Easy enough. Now just waiting on a full Android.
I see the script has been made which is awesome. That was quick lol. For those going manually you download the zip, extract the files open and save them files into a directory. Then CD from that directory using the commands listed in OP to push said files.
Ran script .. worked for me, too! (have ver. 11.3.1)
Many Thanks & keep up the Good Work!!!

The easiest way to check is by opening an adb shell then typing 'su'.
If you get a hash (#) prompt, you have root.
Alternatively you can install Supersu or superuser, or any app which requires root.
Excellent work! The root method worked flawlessly. I noticed the hardware is not all that different from 2012 edition.
Would the custom roms for KFH2 have any chance of running on the new one?
Also should we bother with installing a recovery manager at this stage?
I'm hoping we can get some devs on the bandwagon now and start pumping some custom roms.

I guess my idea would be to take the settings.apk from either the Vibrant dump or cyanogenmod 5.0 and push it to /system/app or wherever the settings.apk is located. Does anyone think that this would work or be willing to try it? I'm just worried that this will brick the touchwiz, and without an "original ROM" or RUU and custom recovery, I'm afraid to try it. Is there anyone braver than me?

The thing is, root explorer isn't free. I want to give people an easy, free solution (maybe flashing something from recovery?). For now, ADB will work for me, but in the future I want to provide something flashable from recovery.
Well, the best thing to do, simply run a sql command along with the rooting update.zip.
I will work on this today and get back to you guys soon.

It isn't free but it isn't expensive either. You just dropped a large wad of cash for the phone, seems like another $3 to get it the way you want it wouldn't be such a big deal.

Droid Explorer is.
I'm an android noob but experienced linux user, so I came up with my own free solution: download a terminal emulator app (the one i got was free, and called, simply, Terminal Emulator, I think).
Then (in the terminal emulator):
Copy the settings.db file to the SD card:
To get superuser access so you can get to the settings.db file (need a rooted phone, obv):
Code:
$su
And confirm the popup allowing access.
Code:
#busybox cp /dbdata/databases/com.android.providers.settings/settings.db /sdcard/settings.db
Then hook up your phone via USB (mass storage method) and use your window manager to copy that from the phone to the computer, edit with an SQL database browser, save it, verify it's still good, move it back to the SD card, then, back on the phone in the terminal emulator:
To get superuser access again:
Code:
$su
Shouldn't have to confirm the popup allowing access again, as the first time appears to do it.
Move the original file to a backup name (just to be safe):
Code:
#busybox mv /dbdata/databases/com.android.providers.settings/settings.db /dbdata/databases/com.android.providers.settings/settings.db.old
Copy the new (edited) file into place:
Code:
#busybox cp /sdcard/settings.db /dbdata/databases/com.android.providers.settings/settings.db
Then reboot, and enjoy the ability to install non-market apps. My first install was Flash 10.1. Works fine on the Captivate.

whats wrong with bumping a (insert # here) old thread? it hasnt been closed or deleted. as long as info pertaining to the OP is being posted shouldnt it be a non-issue? now if it was bumped with something like 'why bump this fossil thread?' then that would be a pointless bump. i gained info from the 1 year late post about superoneclick and thanked the guy for posting it.

Hi there,
I've permarooted my DZ using Visionary which worked fine.
Now I'd like to automatically install the overclock module at boot time.
What's the 'standard' way of doing this?
Regards,
Richard
I'd also like to know
Sent from Desire Z
You can have visionary auto run a script on boot, make a script to install the module and have it run that on boot.
Actually I have it setup but it doesn't work for some reason. Maybe visionary.sh needs extra line? Like !#sh or something.
I did chmod 755 already. It is in /data/local.
Sent from Desire Z
I've now tried this too but it looks like V12 Visionary doesn't execute the script if it detects that the phone is already rooted.
Just thinking, does it run the script with SU privileges or should su be the first command in the file?

The best way, is to use an overclocked kernel now. You will need to flash an S-OFF bootloader first. All the details I have just posted in http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=834950

Hmm, not sure I'm ready for flashing and new kernels just yet...
I'm in the same boat. Don't really want to flash.. just wish this script would run at startup!
not a big deal due to "Fast boot".. since it stays around...
I notice an option in VISIONary 12 saying "Run visionary.sh after root"..
so i guess you can turn this on and it will work?
What do i put into the visionary.sh?
When i use ES File Exploirer and navigate to /Data - it says "No files"?
i expected to see a "Local" and then a visionary.sh?
aah had to enable "Root access" then the folder "local" shows up.
Not sure how to write a visionary.sh..

I got stuck there myself. After about a week I just did sudo apt-get install ubuntu (might've been ubuntu-gnome... the packages escape me.)
Once it was installed I logged out and logged back in to gnome. Worked like a charm. Hassle, I know.
If you figure it out, do write up a how-to. For some reason everybody seems to ignore kde questions.

take everything that is in exploits.zip and move it to your android sdk directory specifically the location of adb.exe (will either be in platform-tools or tools) as for the two RUUs, they can be anywhere but you will have to move them at one point to your SD card. That is about it

Hi all!
First off, I'm new to xda Developers so please excuse me if this is in the wrong forum! I thought I'd post information about a tool I wrote here which roots stock 4.0.3 leak on the A500, A501 and assumingly the A200 too. Its literally one click - just enable USB debugging. "ICS Root" also installs, optionally, FaceLock and Trebuchet (although FaceLock doesn't want to work. It lets you set it up though =P)
Since version 5.0.1 this also now works with the new 0.022.00 leak!
The full post is over at TegraOwners: http://forum.tegraowners.com/viewtopic.php?f=30&t=350
The only real system requirements are Windows (with .Net Framework 4) and an Iconia on the stock 4.0.3 leak. I hope somebody finds this useful its been tested by myself and a couple of TegraOwners users and it works well.
In terms of the technique used, it uses the great Jay Freeman's mempodroid exploit to gain root at which point it mounts /system rw and installs su, busybox and Superuser.apk so no real surprises there. Installing Trebuchet adds that apk to /system/app and installing FaceLock installs the apk to /system/app before installing the pittpatt folder to the flexrom (mounted as /system/vendor). I plan to open source it when all the requested features have been implemented and the code has been cleaned up.
Thanks!

If you are on the cwm with the HC boot loader it should work as Its Magic will be run..
if you are on the new boot loader as in the full non modded leak.. It will give you secure boot error ..
The new boot loader Blocks its magic.

After reading the other post, I have found that I cannot write to the system directory from the device itself. The folder attributes indicate that it is set to write, however File Explorer HD will not let me. I have tried to create a folder in the /system and it will not accept the addition. The strange thing is that Root Check says it is rooted, File Explorer HD accepts putting it into Root Explore, but that is it. It is odd. I will try to reapply the Root to see if that makes a difference.

Please, read the op before bringing this up. This method is for half root, its the only way possible right now on stock leak ics. There is a special script you need to use to mpunt system. You can find it in the stock leak thread, run it in terminal or use rom toolbox and set it as a script to run at boot because rebooting loses write privileges.

ah okay it appears a completely new leak has been released. It is possible that the mempodroid exploit has been patched up. I'm gonna look into it soon. I can't much tonight - I have school work. I'll see what can be done and what the differences between leaks are.
