Battery Drain HD2?

Anyone else experiencing excessive battery drain on their HD2?
I am interested to know if this is just my phone or if it actually just chews through that much juice.
I have had windows mobile phones for several years so I know all the basic ways to keep battery drain down.
Stuff that I have generally found:
1. If I keep the screen turned on without it going blank I lose about 1% every 2 minutes.
2. If I am browsing that figure almost doubles.
3. My old Touch HD used about 5% battery overnight when in standby but this phone will go through about 25%.
4. The phone gets really hot when browsing (much hotter than my old Touch HD)
I have tried flashing ROM's and Radios but nothing seems to help.
I am not running any software on the phone that I wasn't running on my old HD1.
I have only had the phone for a week so I am not sure if this is normal but I would be very surprised if HTC released a phone that lasts for only a few hours on one battery.

I wish I got 2 days

we really need extended battery ,hd1 battery was much more better.

Good mate but yes i agreee HTC has come up with a battery eating device this time around. My device on full charge just gives in around 8-10 hrs. This might be dat my EDGE is on and 7 mails accounts sending mails back and forth.
but truly i think that HTC better look into this very seriously cause more and more ppl are suffering in this battery drain..
Any of flashing roms and radio not helping either... did a complete hard reset but no step up
HTC come with longer battery battery for bigger devices soon......
The only solution i see now is get one of those extra battery worth mind bogling £52.87

I've had this problem ever since flashing to 1.66, I flashed the radio to 2.07.50.27 as this was said to solve the problem but it hasn't made any difference after a few days of use. My battery life used to be significantly better when I was on the original stock ROM, so much so I'm considering going back to it
I also know all the tricks as to clawing back the battery drain, my phone is idle on my desk at work most of the time and I don't use Wi-Fi, all the location stuff is turned off as are weather, stock and other updates plus my screen is set to 30% then off after 60 seconds. Despite all of that I lose 1% every 2-3 minutes
It seems to me that perhaps the radio is checking for reception pretty much constantly rather than say, 5-10 mins perhaps? This used to be a problem on my old Blackberry Storm but a few fimware updates solved it, eventually!
The only other thing I've noticed since the update is that once the battery drops below 50% or so, the drain seems to slow, I don't know if this is perhaps because the phone goes into some sort of semi-power saving mode?
Suggestions/hints welcome! I've had a semi-thorough look into this on the forums and tried most of the suggestions but still the problem remains. Will battery life improve after a few charges perhaps as this was a trait of my Storm's battery, the more you charged it the better the day to day battery life was (and no it wasn't because I had it plugged in all the time! Over time the general charge just seemed to improve when roaming).

You need to indicate what services you have running. Do you have any data services running eg: location services, push mail, weather? all of these have a bearing. In addition, network services can also drain a battery, especially if the signal is weak and the phone have to search for a transmitter, or 3g services.

That is a very interesting comment. Although since upgrading to radio 2.07.51.05_2 I have had very good battery life, I too have noticed a slowdown after 50%

Nothing is turned on, everything is set to manual.
As I stated I know all the basic stuff. I understand that all these things have a bearing on battery loss.
Everything I stated in the first post is for when I have nothing running. The phone is just sitting there running sense, thats all.

I have had my HD2 for a few days now. I am on Vodacom in South Africa.
I have not had a problem with battery life.
Yesterday i unplugged from the charger at 07:00. I spent about 1 and 1/2 hours of talk time on the phone, it was permanently connected to 3g doing weather updates etc. Sent and received a couple of sms's. Also played with a few tweaks and reboots.
When i got home at about 18:00 i had over 30% battery. I then surfed the web for over 2 hours to drain the battery.

Same here with and without stock ROM.

yeah.. the phone is a battery sucker.... another cons of HD2....

This is very interesting to read because I do not have this problem. When I left my HTC HD2 on last night (I woke up at 4 in the morning to get something to drink and unplugged it) and then woke up at 8, it was at 98%. That means it went from 100% to 98% in 4 hours. Not to bad imo.
I am now at work and it is 15:34, and I am at 87%. I have made some calls, watched some videos, send a few text messages. Not much (I am at work so I got other things to do). So 08:00 (98%) - 15:34 (87%) - that's 7 and a half hours, with some calls, text messages and a video.
I am pretty sure when I get home at 18:30 the battery will still be above 75%. Then I connect to my wifi at home, refresh twitter, weather, browse the web a little bit, check e-mail etc. So that will drain my battery a little more.
But overall I have not had any problems with my battery life. I always make it trough a day, and never have a problem like 'damn my battery is almost done and I am not near a charger'.
Some info that might help:
I do not sync ANYTHING automatically. I still have some things to do with my Vodafone contract and do not have an unlimited plan yet. I only sync at home on my own wifi connection. For me this is not a problem, because I only need to refresh the weather each morning to see what the day is going to be like. Twitter I only do when I have the time. Stocks I do not use.
I have screen brightness set to automatic.
I am on 3G most of the time.
I am running the official 1.66 Dutch ROM.
I have some tweaks, games and programs installed.
I hope you all solve this issue, because it just can not be that my HD2 has a good battery life, and your HD2 not

EDIT @ 17:00 still 87%.

I am in a 3G 2100 only network (I don't have 2G functionality).
ROM: Artemis 3.0
Radio: 2.06.50.23_3
Customization: Seiya 6.5.5
I don't leave any automatic updates on, except for my e-mail account every 2 hrs.
I never close my connection.
The drainage overnight is -3% (8hrs).
The battery lasts at least 12 hrs of intense usage.
Normally I have to recharge every second day (e.g. I charged last night, I answered a few calls, I did some IM and browsing and I still have 73% left).
For a phone with a 1 GHz processor, a 4.3" screen and a tiny 1250 mAh battery I find the drainage is rather decent.
Mind you, I ALWAYS do at least one full charging cycle to my battery after flashing a new ROM. I mean: full discharge, battery out 1 min, full charging in OFF mode, battery out 2 mins.

I have seen this process recommended a couple of times now. What is the theory behind it if you don't mind me asking?

maybe its also becouse some of us couldnt wait using the hd2 when they got it (like me) before it was fully charged for the first time
anyway my battery life has improved a little bit, i was at 74% this morning and did a lot of browsing, installing, tweaking and now its at 3%. it used to be much worse

I have battery consuming problem from time to time.I did everything:
installed new stock rom 1.66;
transfered all data which phone is using from card to phone memory(pictures,icons,sounds.etc...)
all updates are done manually;
Gprs connection is swiched off on the idle after one min;
One night it is loosing from 2 to 4%;
another from 30 to 40%
and it is eating memory from 10 to 15mb
I think that it is radio which is causing battery drainage so fast(to much communication wit a base stations,because when I am checking spb wireless monitor in the morning,there is no any data traffic.
I hope they can solve problem,because it is getting me mad and crazy

Try setting the screen brightness to 10-20% (on battery powered)
and dim backlight after 10 seconds (on batter powered).
It helps a lot, at least for me.

as far as i know, the battery has an integrated digital circuit (ic) which estimates the state-of-charge (soc). the procedure resets/calibrates the ic to obtain a more accurate estimation. since the radio rom is in charge with the power management (among other things), by changing it you decalibrate the "gauge".
i don't know if i've got the theory right but i tested this myself and it surely works.

Crazy battery drain in just a few hours

I've been searching various forums for a fortnight now to try and diagnose an SII issue I've been having and Google inevitably brings me here. Unfortunately, the numerous threads on battery drain don't match the problem I've had and the solutions haven't helped.
Around two weeks ago I noticed the battery life on my handset was really terrible, draining in hours. I had been using it quite a bit at the time so assumed this was the cause. However, lately it has been draining within around 6-10 hours even when idle, usually dying completely overnight despite a full charge just before then. I don't have a huge number of apps installed - maybe 20, fairly standard ones like Twitter, Facebook, Amazon, no games and no 'battery defender' style apps. It's not rooted (it's 4.0.3) and I can't root it for other reasons.
The battery drain was a nightmare, basically going from power point to power point just to keep it topped up enough to use and it was draining during idle time and deep sleep. I very rarely ever have 3G, GPS or Bluetooth switched on. Wireless is on most of the time and it generally does have a signal in the two places I spend most time (home and work). It also has a strong Vodafone signal since I'm living in a major city centre.
I tried a few things:
1. Uninstalled all but the most-used apps I had. No change.
2. Uninstalled everything it was possible to uninstall. No change.
3. Installed BetterBatteryStats and CPU Spy. BBS plus many hours of searching kernel/partial wakelocks and so on showed nothing that looked odd at all, certainly nothing taking up a lot of time or regularly stirring the phone. CPU Spy showed it did deep sleep when idle.
4. Factory reset. This included no app installations except BBS, disabling the likes of Social Hub, Gaming Hub and all other stock apps I could. No tethering or wifi sharing, no wifi, no 3G, no GPS, no Bluetooth, nothing running. It was basically a handset sitting there doing nothing. BBS showed nothing odd that I could see but the battery still drains in hours. No partial wakelocks and a tiny number of kernel wakelocks taking up next to no time and occurring a handful of times. No change.
5. I charged it before bed, took the battery out and left it until morning. In the morning it was down at 79%. This seemed weird so I bought a brand new genuine Samsung battery and gave that a try. No change in the 6-10 hour drain but taking the battery out overnight showed no drain now.
6. The weirdest of all. I charged it fully before bed, switched it off over night and it was drained completely by morning. That seems crazy to me. I can fully understand poor software or bugs draining a battery but not when a handset is switched off.
I am lucky enough to be able to get a new handset through work but this issue really annoys me. I took very good care of the phone, never installed anything crazy, didn't over charge it, the handset never got warm at any time, I'm careful with Wifi/GPS/Bluetooth/3G and location services, yet I ended up with an effectively useless "mobile" phone.
Is there anything that comes to mind that could have caused this? Point 5 above made me think it was simply a battery issue and maybe it partly was (with two batteries, how unlucky) but point 6 is just crazy. What could cause a handset to drain a battery under these circumstances?

Take the phone to Samsung Service Centre. No phone should drain that quick when un-rooted and a full wipe has been done

Um...widgets? Some widgets on stock Samsung ROMs kills your battery - I remember AP mobile news is a huge drainer. Try limiting the number of widgets you put on your homescreens maybe?

I sugges too full reflash the stock rom and after count the batter time. If it does not help, it cold be HW error too - maybe it isn't.

I9505 Android 4.4 GE battery issue explanation

Reading the thread of Jamal's Google Play Edition 4.4 ROM, i noticed some users were saying they could get 4 hours of screen on time. Sadly enough this wasn't the case for me, and I think many other users can confirm. On a full charge, i can barely get 2hours of screen on time out of it, which is of course unacceptable. I decided to analyse the battery usage.
What I've got after a full discharge is illustrated in the attachment. If you know how I used my phone during this period, the curve is very surprising and hard to explain. The first hours I had my 4G on for extended periods and I noticed pretty decent battery life, i.e. 25% gone after 1 hour of screen on time. That's surely an acceptable score and would give me also that beautiful 4 hours. But suddenly, the phone made a weird change. You can see that the phone starts discharging much faster with a new and constant slope. I tried stopping it but it didn't change at all. My 4G and wifi were all set to off, even my location settings were turned off. Nothing changed.
I started searching the web if some applications were not optimised for android 4.4 yet, but didn't find anything significant. But then I found topics about the Exchange issue which already gave many android 4.4 users headaches. I read about a constant error-looping that could cause fast battery drain and, sneaky enough, doesn't start immediately when the phone boots but can start after a period of several hours. I decided to shut the whole thing off and deleted my Exchange account. Rebooted the phone and the issue was gone.
Hopefully a fix will be brought out soon!

I've got the 16gb nexus 7 (non 3g).
I've had it for less then a year and the battery life had been great. But starting over the last few days the battery is horrible. After a full charge over night my battery was down to 50% today. And that's with hardly any use. I used it for maybe an hour total and at least half of that time was just reading reddit.
I haven't changed any settings recently. This is all stock, no mods, not even rooted.
The battery usage right new says it's been 13 hours, and it's down to 48% and Android os accounts for 27% Followed by screen at 18% and WiFi at 9%. Those are the top 3 showing for battery usage.
Any suggestions as to what's going wrong it how to diagnose be fix it?

Either your battery is bad or you have a stray process running somewhere.You might want to factory reset it, possibly even reflash your image.

Would the battery go bad that fast though? In my experience batteries usually gradually get worse. This went from losing a few percent of power to losing half power in the span of a day.
I might try the factory reset - just have to make sure everything is backed up. This tablet isn't rooted so i dont have titanium backup on it.

Doubtful it's the battery... my money is on a rogue app!!!

It's possible, that as the previous poster suggests, some rogue app is 'eating' your battery.
The biggest consumer of power is the screen, so ensure you haven't got it set it maximum brightness... and ensure auto-brightness is enabled in settings.
Another thing you can check, is your WiFi setting... on my Nexus 7, I have 'Keep WiFi on during Sleep' set to 'Never'... it's not a setting that is easily found - it's buried in SETTINGS>>Wi-Fi>>overflow MENU (three dots, top right hand corner)>>ADVANCED>>Keep WiFi on during Sleep.
It also might be worth checking if the SYNCING of your respective accounts (Google, Twitter, etc.), haven't been inadvertently changed. Particularly the SYNCING of your Google account... which by default, SYNCs a lot of stuff and frequently. This will keep WiFi awake, and may cause battery drain. Go to SETTINGS>>ACCOUNTS>>GOOGLE and disable what you don't need to be SYNCed.

It's unfortunate that your Nexus 7 isn't rooted, because there are a couple of excellent diagnostic apps available (GSam Battery Monitor and BetterBatteryStats) which provide more granular and finely detailed battery info/history than the standard Android battery info screen... and are useful for tracking down problematic apps that might be keeping the device unnecessarily awake ('wakelocks', etc.).
However, due to changes in Android 4.4 (KitKat), these apps now require root access to read and report battery stats info.
If your Nexus 7 is running any version of Android BEFORE 4.4 KitKat (and some haven't updated yet), then you don't need root to run these diagnostic apps.

It's sometimes the case, with Android, that there will be occasional peculiarities with battery performance... and in my experience, it's almost always the case, it's due to something the user did... some app or widget installed. I'm currently experiencing similar battery issues on my Samsung Galaxy S3, but having run GSam for a couple of days, I think I have the culprit identified. If I can't eliminate the problem, I'll uninstall the app.

Gedblake, thanks for the suggestions. For whatever reason, today it seems to be back to normal. The only thing i did last night was drain the batter to around 10%, turn it off, and let it charge while turned off.
Turned it back on today,used it for about 15 minutes or so playing a game. And now just about 5 hours after turning it on, it's down to 92% which is what I'd normally expect.
I'll try some of your suggestions if the problem re-occurs.

I noticed that my N7 (2012) has been draining quite a bit lately. Watching the battery stats, it seems Google Wallet was eating up some major battery. It was 2nd at 29% with the screen number 1 at 38%.
Not sure what the heck Google Wallet was doing, but I killed it and things seem to have stabilized.

Every night I plug it in to charge and in the morning it's fully charged and ready to go. On Tues, I received the OTA update for 4.4.4 I noticed this morning that after a full night's charge, the battery only reports 50% charge. Is this the beginning of the end? What steps should I take from here? I recently bricked by GS3 so I depend on this thing now more then ever, any help would be sooooo appreciated.

I'd just restart it and let it charge again. I've updated mine a while ago and haven't had any issues.

I'm on a custom 4.4.2 ROM and I have had intermittent draining behavior as well.
Sync is off, location services off, I turn off wifi manually, and I always clear recents before I have my tablet sleep. I have greenify installed. I'm using better battery stats.
My issue seems to be similar, but I am also having battery percentages jump around.
Earlier today it went from 26% to 43% in the middle of me using it. Without charging. It frequently does this, both lesser and greater values reported. I've had my tablet shut down in the 30% range. I've had it shut itself off on 4%. I've had it drain all the way to 0% and then some before shutting down. I've had it turn itself off and when I power it back on the tablet is thinking it is at 25% or more.
I haven't been getting much more than an hour of screen time with my tablet lately. Clean fresh install of my ROM.
But I've never, until the last couple of days, had it go from a small percent to a large percent active during use. I took screenshots. I even started a thread to talk about it but nobody has responded yet.
Has anyone else ran into this behavior? Is it a sign of a soon to be dead battery?

mine got almost 30% drained on idle, airplane mode, screen off for 3 hours (tested on stock rom 4.4.3. GApps + Swiftkey + BBM + Facebook only)
my nexus 7 never lasted a day, only half a day max.
trying GSam app, hope it helps in knowing what's eating up batteries.

[Q] Sudden Battery Drain on stock phone

So as it says, I am having a sudden issue with my battery. For the first few weeks after I bought this phone, I was sitting at nearly 2 full days before charging again. The past few weeks.. it has been decreasing steadily. From 2 full days to having to charge my phone every 1.5 days.. and now down to 1 day. This morning I wake up and my battery is being ridiculous. This was an overnight charge. I had only touched my phone last night to text and that was all.
I do not have have my phone rooted, and I would love to be able to fix the issue without rooting if possible! I really dislike losing all my game progresses when having to flash or factory reset anything.
As you can see in the attachment below.. I HAD great battery life. I played games frequently throughout the day.. used the phone quite often to text, facebook, chat on hangouts and still had 2 full days before needing to charge again.
Yes I've disabled a LOT of bloatware. I keep my location and bluetooth off at all times. I turned the WIFI from "Always on" to "Only when charging".I keep my screen brightness turned down and set to automatic. I turned off Google Search. I DO have motion gestures turned on, ONLY for the palm swipe screen capture.
I tried searching the forums for the answer and could not find one that directly applies to my issue. Most of them were short battery lives out of the box or shortened with the update in April.
I would appreciate any suggestions that you may have!

I'm in the exact same boat. When I went to bed last night my phone was at 27% and my device was dead when I woke up this morning.
I'm debating doing a factory reset on my phone, but that's a last resort.

I've had weird battery issues like this. Like 90% battery when I go to bed then the phone's off (2%) when I wake up. I've switched off the wi-fi toggles that we all know about but I also deleted and disabled most Samsung apps (except SHealth) and deleted the Samsung app store. I also got rid of all apps that I rarely or never use. This got rid of my battery issues and now have excellent battery life.

Yeah.. I have completely gutted out all the useless apps to me. That included all of Samsung's Apps and all but one T-mobile app. I'm in your boat Undergrad, I really don't want to factory reset if I don't need to!
I went into my Google Play and changed the updating from always to let me decide and turned off Google Search.
My battery still isn't where it used to be but that helped a lot. I'm now at 1d 2hours at 26%. The screen and Android System are neck and neck on my usage right now..
I wonder what app(s) is/are doing this.. maybe a recent update to them is just chunking away at our batteries.
