Hello,
I'm trying to update my friend's Defy (MB525) Green Lens to 4.1.2 via rooting and CM.
I managed to root it and install the 2nd Init app. I'm using version 2.3 of the 2nd Init app.
I'm stuck because even though I ran the 2nd Init App to install the 2nd Init Custom Recovery, I get no blue LED when the phone is starting up.
2nd Init asked for Superuser permissions when installing, which I granted and the app also says 2nd Init is installed so I'm pretty sure I did it right.
I saw the RED and GREEN LEDs come up during the installation too. The green one stayed on after installing, I understand this is normal.
I even tried installing it a second time but I still don't get the blue LED, and I have turned USB debugging off.
The phone details are as follows:
Firmware: 2.1-update1
Baseband: EPU93S2_U_03.0E.02
Kernel: 2.6.29
Please help

I agree. Try to upgrade to 2.2 Froyo, or better than that, upgrade to 2.3 GingerBread if possible.

I'm just answering to confirm what have been said before in case anyone end up here like me.
I was almost in the WizaJ's case (french orange stock MB525, eclair, v2.51.1) and had the same symptoms.
Upgrading to a 2.2 froyo with a full sbf (french retail v3.4.2) made it.
Is there any advantages to upgrade to gingerbread for launching custom kernels from 2ndinit ?
On my defy, I have to have the phone at the right tilt to see the blue led as it is really faint. I turns on only for a second or two after the screen flashes a bit when the Motorola symbol is up.
If you press the down button intermittently you are bound to catch it when the led is on. Try that.

hi guys, having major issues here.
i'm on JORDN_U3_97.21.51.sbf, a t-mobile 2.1 rom. i have rooted with an old version of superoneclick because 2.1.1 wouldnt work, i've installed sndinitdefy 1.4.2 which all goes fine.
the problem comes when flashing any froyo 2.2 sbf, none of them work. In RSD at the reboot stage it just says PASS rather than rebooting, and it sticks at the motorola screen. ive tried with 4.9 and 5.x RSD.
i literally dont know what to try next. how can i get onto a froyo rom?
ive tried flashing straight from 2.1 to a CM7 and PAYS rom which didnt work either.
everytime the sbf fails im forced to flash back to JORDN_U3_97.21.51.sbf, which always works fine.
please help
Try 2.3 gb using nandroid + fixed sbf may work n did u wipe b4 n after flashing??
Sent from my MB525 using XDA Premium App
if your on tmobile 2.1, try updating thru settings and download the update ota, or root phone then update via zip, which I think is somewhere in the dev forum. Root first then install 2init.
E. Try redownloading your sbf
Got a Headache? It's all in your Head.
how come some sbfs are 160mb and others 16-17mb?
have you got the link for the tmobile zip??
thx
i did try wiping between roms
if i were u i wouldn't update to 2.2.2
2.1 is much more better and less bugs.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1140839
could be good.
hope it helps.

Flash the JDGC_U6_2.1.3.0 SBF
Then root with SuperOneClick and proceed as per the guides.
Thank you, Jalal-jap, Thank you God!!!
Oh my god!
Thank you soooooooo much Jalal-jap.
Many thanks also to dlhxr for bringing this to xda and to d4d9 on mfunz for finding this gem.
My phone is fully restored to 2.2.2 froyo!
I haven't checked camera because of possible flash burn out mentioned in dlhxr's post but battery and all other functions are now fully working and I have a phone signal again!!!!
This definately looks like an original motorola build and is very responsive & smooth. All be it most of the menu's are in Chinese.
At last a solution to all those bricked defys at the bottom of drawers, lets see what the developers can do with it to make further improvements on the defy.

OK now for the good stuff.
I followed the guide here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1807899 and it works but see below for observations.
I haven't repeated the instructions below so read the other post this is not a guide.
ran superoneclick and it took much longer than before - it reboots twice so don't disconnect until its finished.
ran 2ndint old version - 1.4.2 and installed 2nd init no problems - had earlier problems with latest 2ndinit in that it installed but i never got the blue led to boot into recovery, possibly due to the state my kernel and boot system were in but the older one definitely works.
rebooted into boot menu vol down @ blue led
cleared user data, cache, devit cache
installed cm10 zip from sd card
rebooted and then realised i hadn't recleared cache, opened recovery again on boot (@ blue led)
cleared cache and rebooted again.
chinese boot screen logo came up for about 30 secs (dont panic) then the spinning CyanogenMod wheel for a while then it started jelly bean!!
All seems fine except I dont have a battery icon at present and the red led is illuminated (thinking about it I accidentally wiped the battery data when clearing the davik so this may be my bad!)
Never used jellybean before so gonna have a play, try overclocking / undervolting again for a while then post back.
I`m one big happy bunny right now and thanks again to all of you that helped directly or indirectly to get me to this point

good luck
to tidy up and give pointers to anyone else that ends up on this thread from a search.
The battery ? icon and red led issue has now been fixed using the red lense fix for cm10. A bit strange as I have a green lense defy but presume its the red lense / defy+ kernel in the chinese BL6 rom that has caused the issue.
I originally installed the 2013 cm10 2nd boot daily over the bl6 froyo, but then reflashed using 2013 daily cm10 1st boot version to see if it was 2nd boot version problem but no difference.
As that problem is fixed I have overclocked to 1200Mhz and the phone is working much better than it ever has.
battery is lasting a full day which it often didn't using stock at 800MHz so the latest build is obviously much more efficient.
One thing I noticed after flashing back to the 1st build rom is that my wifi signal is much weaker than it was on the 2nd boot version but as I have now set everything up and got the phone set up as I want it I wont change back for a while, it works and that's the main thing.
my settings are:
25vsel1 @ 300mhz
42vsel2 @ 650mhz
60vsel3 @ 1200mhz
threshold set at 90%
very stable, no hangs or reboots, cpu mflops 1 core = 30.1
Quadrant full benchmark results = 1560
good enough for me!!
No other issues found as yet.
Thanks to all who helped once again - hopefully I can pass it on in the future.
Hi
I tried to update from from Eppy's JB 20120806 version.
I have a green lens MB525.
I believe I am running BL5. I think I used cm7.1.0-RC0-jordan-signed as my original SBF.
Up until this ROM I have had no problems updating from GB-ICS-JB.
After wiping cache & dalvik I installed the 11/10 version. All goes well and the boot changes to 2ndBoot.
I get Red moto logo, blue LED, then Red led then reboots or just stays with the red led and a blank screen.
Pulled the battery and I get the same.
I tried to load the 29/08 ROM and this did the same thing as well.
Do I need to update to BL6 or something?
I have returned the phone to the pre flashed state using the backup. So all is still working ok.
Any ideas and thanks for your help

You just have to wait for it to boot. The screen goes blank when the LED switched from blue to red on my phone, too, but then it comes back on after some time, with the bootanimation. At first boot I think that lasted for maybe even 20 seconds. Much shorter on later boots.
But that couldn't have happened with the 29th of August build... Maybe you left your phone set to boot from 2ndboot, while that built is supposed to work by booting from 2ndInit?
P.S. cm7.1.0-RC0-jordan-signed is not an SBF file, it's a custom ROM that comes in a flashable zip. SBF files are in .sbf format silly and are flashed to the phone from the PC via RSDlite. Just so you know!

Hi and thanks for the reply and help.
I left the phone on for about 10 minutes with only the red led on. There seemed to be no activity.
I did not check to see if the boot was set back to 2ndinit. Can try that.
I found this file 3.4.2_177-005_NORDIC it is a SBF. I may have used this to start with after rooting. It was over 14mths ago.

Update. Tried to install 2409 Rom and made sure that I wiped the cache & dalvik. Also checked that it was set to 2ndinit.
Still looped. So am unsure what is going on. Rather frustrating.
Hi, flash your sbf, then 2init and then flash your cm you want.

Hi, i have some questions about the 2ndboot updates. I had tested cm10 for a while now (but currently in cm7.2), but i got a little lost with this whole kernel update.
1st of all, in quarx page i don't see a "cm10-2ndboot-nightly-defy/" folder, just the one for defy+, this new builds are only for defy plus yet?, or there work on both devices?
and if they do, how sould i install them, do they change to 2ndboot by themselves or do i have to do it myself?

They are for both and no change is required from your part in the bootmenu settings
I've tried flashing 10.11 and update.zip today, with no luck.
I first tried flashing over my original cm10 (9.12 - froyo kernel, on green lens) - wiped cache, then dalvik.
boot loops on red led
then i tried wiping all data/cache and flashing both again
same boot loops
next i tried flashing a new sbf (t mobile usa 2.1 updated to 2.2 - then rooted and 2ndinit)
now still waiitng at red led on boot, but no boot loops.
I have read the bootup time is very long the first time, but I've let it sit over 15 minutes, and tried a battery pull and let it sit another 15 minutes.
I am about to try again from nordic deblur 2.2 sbf
Am i doing something wrong? I'm not an expert at this stuff, but i'm usually pretty good about following directions. please help!
Amazing job again Quarx and everyone!

I think You've misundersttod my friend. There no long time of bootlooping. Theres a long first boot. Boot lopping shouldn't happen continuously.
Maybe following the steps below from a post on the defy general forum should help

BIGNOTE: Green lens users who flashed redlens builds please dont try using flash, you will end up burning it like me and many others.
STEPS TO FOLLOW WHEN YOU HAVE BOOTLOOPS OR BLACK SCREEN WITH RED LED ON:
-1st of all set default boot to 2nd-boot
-Go to recovery and flash the 24.9 build
-Then flash the kernel 6.10
-After that flash the latest build
-Wait and you will have your phone working proper.

Also you cont just go down to a previous sbf version. Youve flashed a custom kernel. You would need to go to your standard kernel which you would find elsewhere. I think the CM10 faqs have the 525 and 526 kernels
i followed the same procedure as last time, but this time starting from the nordic deblur sbf and everything worked fine. no bootloops. long first boot time. If anyone tries this, do NOT use the official tmobile USA sbf. didn't work for me at all. I'm guessing that's why i had problems with 9/24 build as well.
Flashing nordic to workaround red led + black screen ?

Hi,
Your message rings a bell to me !
I have tried to flash cm10 18/10 + update_v4 on my Defy (green lens) but I have failed, I always get stuck on red led + black screen. Waiting or removing battery and retrying did not help. Wiping did not help either. I am coming from cm7, had never flashed cm9 or cm10 before, and before cm7 my phone was on french froyo stock rom 3.4.2-164.
Do you think I should try to flash another sbf, such as nordic deblur sbf as you did ?
Is your bootloop like that:
Splashscreen -> red LED + black screen -> Splashscreen -> red LED + black screen
If yes, you should think about upgrading your bootloader...
Had the same problem and was on BL5, some people in Support thread had the same prob on BL5...
So I flashed this chinese rom, rooted and upgraded to cm10 and everything worked fine for me.
Use this SBF just as a stepstone to CM10, because it may break your flashlight or ****.
Make sure you have snd-init on your sd, cause there is no gapps on the sbf...
well thats it...

did you wipe cache and dalvik?

Hey folks,
I have done a foolish thing last night. I installed White rabbit ROM. I think my kernel version got updated or something. Earlier it was 2.3.6 gb but now it is Jelly bean XXX (I dont remember exact version).
Then I tried to install Pikachu version. It did not work. Now my cell wont reboot. Tried to install white rabbit all over again, it displays the Red "White Rabbit" logo but freezes there.
Is it possible that my kernel version is changed? What ROM should I install now?
Please help.

You do a big mess which can be cured by flashing a stock ROM (sbf).
Or you can enter the boot menu and under filesystem tools select format to ext 3 and then flash white rabbit+ data wipe

Hello,
I was running CM7.2 but had an issue so I flashed back to the stock rom. Now I'm trying to flash a new custom rom but for some reason 2ndinit is not working.
I rooted and installed the recovery menu from 2ndinit, but I am not seeing a blue light on bootup.
The phone boots into the stock rom just fine, but I cannot get into the recovery menu.
Any help?
Problem
Cannot access ClockworkMod Recovery menu after installing 2ndInit
What I've tried
Wiped SD
Wiped Data
Reflashed JORDN_U3_6.36.0
Rooted
Installed 2ndinit 2.3
Still no luck, upon boot there is no LED. If I hold the down volume for the entire boot I am met with an android exclamation mark.
Update...
I was able to access an old version of CWM v2.5 using 2ndinit 2.0.
But that brings with it a new set of problems. When trying to access the SD card from CWM, it cannot mount it.
Using ADB and the commands in this forum (forum.cyanogenmod.com/topic/33179-problems-installing-71-recovery-cant-mount-sdcard/) I was able to mount the SD and install CM7.2.
Now I am having GPS and 3g connectivity issues with CM7.2 that I've never had before. It makes me wonder if that hack way of mounting the SD messed up the installation?
I am using the US T-Mobile 3.4.2-107-9 baseband.

Hi there. Any luck getting this to work, as i have the same issue.
I rooted the phone, then installed 2ndInit and when i reboot it has no blue light. When i run the Defy 2mdInit in android it lights up red, then goes green, so appears to be doing all right stuff.
A silly question but one i cant find a answer too, is how to reboot! Im holding down the power button, then selecting power off. Once off i power on again, now technically thats a cold restart. Is there a different method to rebooting/restarting once the green light is on?
Many thanks.

If you just want to install a custom rom, like cm7 then you don't need to go through that process. You could try this method instead http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1787541
Please note: This method does not work for BL7 bootloader.

Hi There Pravarth.
Im completely new to all this, and this will be the first phone i mod. All i would like to do is install CM 10.2 (Android 4.3) and overclock to 1.0Ghz.
I know the Kernel needs to be changed to overclocking from what i read, so if i do the ROM update via this method, is there a option to overclock then too?
Is there a known issie with 2ndInit not doing the blue light on a reboot?

Hi There Pravarth.
Im completely new to all this, and this will be the first phone i mod. All i would like to do is install CM 10.2 (Android 4.3) and overclock to 1.0Ghz.
I know the Kernel needs to be changed to overclocking from what i read, so if i do the ROM update via this method, is there a option to overclock then too?
Is there a known issie with 2ndInit not doing the blue light on a reboot?
Many thanks.

First of all, do you have a defy or defy+? Because some methods dont work for defy+
Then you should probably read this if you new to flashing: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1216982
I also suggest going from stock to cm7 and then cm10.2
Cm10.2 is overclocked to 1ghz by default. You dont have to do anything

Hi again.
I have a Defy with no moto blur and a red lens.
I have read a lot about flashing, and downloaded all the files i needed, rooted the phone then first problem came getting 2ndInit. I was having issues with the phone resetting when connected via usb so got the SndInitDefy_2.3.apk which runs fine, goes through all the steps, red light becomes a green light and says success. But then when i reboot it never shows the blue light.
Also a lot of these guides are Windows based and i dont use Windows i use Linux.
What are the benifits of going to CM10.2 via CM7, is there a reason for this?
Am i rebooting the correct way by doing a shut down then starting the phone again? Is there no way to do a hot reboot rather than a cold reboot?
Thanks again for your replies.
I don't know what went wrong, you should have been able to see the blue led. But, it's much easier to recover by flashing the easy recovery sbf. Then reboot to recovery and flash cm7. I say flash cm7 because the new cm10.2 has a newer version of update-binary so it wont flash successfully.
You need cm7 just for the CWM and bootmenu, from there you can flash cm10.2
You can use this method to flash sbf using linux http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1076138

Hi.
I seem to be having more success now, i got SndInit1.4.apk and now it gives the blue light and im in the BootMenu!
So maybe the new version has some issues!
---------- Post added at 05:55 PM ---------- Previous post was at 05:01 PM ----------
Well im now ablle to at least get the bootmenu, however everything is there but it wont mount my sd card. Its shows the following..
ClockworkMod Recovery v2.5.1.8
E:Can't mount /dev/blocl/mmcblk0p1 (or /dev/blocl/mmnblk0)
(No such file or directory)
E:Can't mount /sdcard
Any ideas what is causing this problem?
I did try with another SD card, tried a smaller one thinking its a size issue, then formatted it too and same error message comes up.
Hope im giving enough info, but thats all i can see. Thanks again.

So, I'm guessing you flashed froyo, root and then sndinit? Did you try the easy recovery method?
While I've had similar issue before, I would just assume it was some bad flash and start over. Never wondered why it would happen. It is quite a pain. But most importantly, make sure the battery doesn't go low otherwise it wont allow you to flash.
Usually all such problems go away if you return to stock and try again
Here's what I usually do: Flash froyo stock + super one click to root + 2ndinitdefy2.0apk (It has the new version of CWM). Then flash cm7
OR
Flash froyo stock + easy recovery sbf. Then flash cm7 from stock recovery
Hope this works
Your link to everything about the Defy was very helpful and informative.
Im still on Eclair which seems like that might be the problem, so i guess i need to get Windows...i do have a old Windows XP so will find that old hard drive and boot into that then try the SDlite app and try install a stock 2.2 rom.
At the moment it has a French rom, in English though, so will try find a 2.2 French rom sbf. I think the issue might be 2.1 not being able to use the SD card like 2.2 and up does. Also 2ndInit v2.3 does not work, any other lower version does work, but gives a sd card error.
So my bext question, where do i get a standard 2.2 french rom? There is a link on here, but its the Orange version, not sure if that will be ok.
All i did was root, then 2ndInit. Rooting was a knightmare, eventually used the Motorola1Click Root and that worked, nothing else worked.
Thanks for all your help, knowing all the technical stuff is one thing, knowing all the orders, files and so on is another.
