[Q] Removing Root Troubles - Nook Color Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi!
I have a Nook color and have had it rooted pretty much since I purchased it. I am pretty familar with the process, but apparently I am missing something. I feel that its something simple too...
Don't mind my noob terminology.
So I wanted to go back to stock on the Nook. Here's what I did:
-Made the CMW bootable card
-Added "nook-complete-restore-1.4.1" from cyanogenmods
-formatted system, data, cache
-installed zip
-turned it off
-removed card
-started it up
-Goes to the "Read forever" screen
-Then goes to the black screen with the Nook logo
- And stays there... -_-
Help?

Try going to my NC Tips thread linked in my signature and read item A15.

Hello,
I had just recently rooted and flashed my nook with cyanogenMod 7 and installed gapps zip file. Now at various times I get "android.process stop" any ideas on how to get this to stop?
Thank you

Please let us know what versions of each you installed. It is important to figure out what might be causing the issue. Also, if it is the first time you have done this, and you haven't spent much time personalizing, I would just flash again to see if it resolves the issue.

Go in to recovery wipe all but EMMC. Dont touch it. After a full proper wipe reflash. If you dont proper wipe you get klingons some times. Lol

I have cyanogenMod=7.1.0-encore and gapps-ics-20120317-signed

Please download and install (flash zip from CWM) from here http://goo-inside.me/gapps/gapps-gb-20110828-signed.zip.
You have the ICS(CM9) version of gapps for the CM7 version.
I've downloaded that version of gapps and still had the same issue.

I would do what Hal suggested "Go in to recovery wipe all but EMMC. Dont touch it. After a full proper wipe reflash. If you dont proper wipe you get klingons some times."
Then flash the gapps version recommended in above post. If you are still experiencing issues, then start from scratch, make sure to wipe all caches (don't touch EMMC) and use only the gapps mentioned here.
So what is EMMC? Is that the primary operating system?

EMMC is the main partition for the Nook <where the main system resides>. When I clear up my system I 'wipe' "cache partition" and Advance> Wipe Dalvik cache. You access these from the CWM recovery.

I wipe /system, /data, /cache, and dalvik-cache. Then flash the new ROM. I would also suggest giving CM7.2 a try instead of 7.1 along with the gapps mentioned previously. Wiping /system is actually an important step for getting everything settled correctly,
I completed the steps that you recommended and install the gapps that you suggested and did all the wipes. As soon as I restarted the nook this is what I got "Sorry! The process android.process.media has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again. Force close"
Have you tried Mirage cm 7.2 yet?

OP of this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1344873
Scroll down to downloads. This is a very stable and usable ROM. Hope this helps.
Thanks for helping me out everyone with this I greatly appreciate it. Something else I am looking at now, is there a way to convert a java file (jar) into an android file (apk)? I ask this because I have found an app call andro lite what it does is it allows you to use your android as a keyboard, mouse, and others input devices with your computer but you have to download the server file which is a jar file. I'm think if it is possible to do this then I can have the jar file on my nook and use my droid phone as the input device.
Thanks in advance for the help and advice.
I use a VNC client app for that sort of thing. Valence acts as keyboard and mouse via VNC and lets me run demos while walking around the room.
VNC servers are available or even supplied for most OS's.

So I looked them up in the play store and from understanding of that it is more for android controlling windows. I'm looking for android to android type. I want to be able to use the keyboard from my droid 4 (whether physcial or virtual) to type in or operate on my nook.

This does have relate to development, how do we develope the ability to connect one droid to another droid so as to have multiple user interfaces.

I don't think you understand the differences between asking a question and development. This place is for posting a ROM. Check Q&A and post there. PM a mod and have them move this to the correct section.

[Q] [MN5] SD Card problems and rooting questions *EDIT: rooted! Now more questions..

Greetings all. I am trying to get everything together to root my wife's Nook Color, but am somewhat confused and have a couple of questions. First, she got this from her mother. Is there any way to back up what books are already on there before rooting and flashing a new ROM? Also do I need to do a factory reset / complete wipe before I root and install a custom ROM? Once I do root this, we will be able to get back to her account and re-download the her books, right? Currently the account settings show her mom's name and email address, even though the wife says she updated the account to her Gmail Does her mom need to de-register this before I proceed?
I'm having trouble getting the SD card to work right, I think. I have a SanDisk 8GB card with a USB Card Reader. After writing a boot image using Win32DiskImager to the card from this link I removed the SD Card briefly, then re-inserted it to the USB Reader. Upon doing so, Windows gives me the message that I must first format the card for it to be readable. Why?
After I get this to work, I can follow along with the steps outlined in the ManualNooter thread and be rooted, right? By doing the MN this will only root the device, not install a ROM, right? I have to find whatever ROM I want to use (CM10, I suppose) and the correct gapps, boot to recovery, then install, right? Thanks for the help and info all.
ETA: I'm in the process right now of formatting the SD Card using SDFormatter and will try to write the boot image again and see what happens.
ETA 2: Ok, I got the image file on the boot card, but I guess it's for a 1 GB SD card. Where the hell do I find one for an 8 GB card? After writing, Windows says I have 193 MB free of 203 MB. Is that my problem?
ETA 3: Ok, I was able to find 8gb_clockwork-3.2.0.1.img. Writing that to the SD card now.
ETA 4: Got it rooted. So am I now on the "stock" B&N Android with limited functionality? I think I want to install a custom rom on the internal memory and will follow the link in post 2. I set this up with my Gmail and got a few apps installed to play with. How do I now remove all of that and start from a fresh root so my wife can get it set up with her Gmail? How do I simply remove an app I no longer want? Also, The Amazon App Store will not download apps. When I go to "My Apps" from the menu I can see the apps I have in the Cloud but when I try to download anything I get a full bar and it says "Downloading..." and switches back and forth to "Download Pasued" but it doesn't actually download anything. Any ideas?
Re: [Q] [MN5] SD Card problems and rooting questions
Couple of answers - yes you will still have access to books thru the Nook app.
Yes, deregister the Nook and register it in your wife's name.
Yes, manual nooter only roots the device. You need to go further to add roms.
What method are you using to root /rom the nook? There are excellent instructions by eyeballer right at the beginning of the general section here that have never failed me.

Thanks, K. I did manage to get it rooted finally. So I've managed to get a couple apps installed and working. I signed in with my Gmail account to play with it. How do I remove that and add my wife's account now? How do I uninstall apps? The Amazon App Store will not download apps. I'm just rooted, no ROM yet. I do not have a "Manage Applications" within settings. Settings takes me to what looks like the stock B&N Settings.
Okay. I'm sorry I haven't used stock rooted rom for almost 3 years. Hopefully someone else here can help you with that. Or try googling your question and see what comes up.

Looks like this might be my issue. I need an SD card in the Nook to download stuff to.
What's the best way to go about cleaning this thing up totally and doing a clean root? If I boot into recovery and wipe data, will it wipe out the B&N stuff, or just the apps and such from the root? Can I then re-apply the MN root and follow that up with a ROM?
Since you already have 3.0.2.1, I would suggest you go to this thread and look at for the link at the end of the post where it says, "Want nightly builds, look here" The latest build is really sound and running well on my nook. Look in the 2nd post for the correct link for the gapps (google apps). Download both of those and put them on your sd card with 3.0.2.1
Go back to the link I gave you earlier (eyeballer's thread) and follow instructions. This will completely wipe the nook, wipe off your account, wipe everything. You will be starting from scratch on a new ROM. I'm off to work, but will check back later.

Do you think rooting the tablet will help you?
Flashing to allow unknown sources via the image disk worked great for me. Adobe Flash and all my other non market installed apps working great. I did not root.
Edit:
Changed post from permissions to unknown sources.

It is not a file to flash, his terminology is a little off. He means going to CWM and the advanced menu and choose 'fix permissions'.

I tried 'fix permissions' but no success. I am trying to install widely used apps from travel sites like Orbitz and Travelocity which are installed on my samsung 7+ tab running ICS. It must have something to do with stock as they were installed on CM 10 on nook hd+. While I prefer stock due to the excellent sleep option and battery life, I may have to go back to CM 10.

It probably is a terminology issue, but what I did was:
1. Create the image with a micro sd.
2. Drap the Rev3 zip to the sd
3. Shut off the Nook
4. Insert the sd into the Nook and then turned it on
5. Went to the option to flash via the sd card with volume and pressed home key
6. Chose the Rev3 zip and pressed home. The files installed,
7. Removed the sd
8. Restarted..... Hung on the Nook screen for ten minutes, so held power to turn off
9. Restarted
10. Was able to side load all of my apps that needed it after that. I started with Adobe Flash which works GREAT with Dolphin, Opera and Xscope (had to side load Xscope, since could not install via market).
I do not recall flagging permissions in the image menu. I thought the flash process did all that, which it apparently did for me.
Side loaded Flash, Oid emulators, aFBA, Xscope and some market games as well that could be saved with an unrooted back-up app.

His terminology was mixed up. He did not mean "fix permissions" either. He meant flashing the Extras zip, which enables unknown sources, not "flash permissions". But you had already done that.
So I don't know how to fix your problem.

Yep, to me getting unknown sources working is a permission, but wrong in the true Android terminology.
Regardless, being able to install by side loading and the 2.1 update make this one of the best tablets. Actually, it seems a direct equal to the Excite 7.7 which IMO is the best current overall tablet. Better in some regards. The display and power efficiency in sleep mode is a big part of the departuresweight for the HD+.
Thanks, All is Well !

Leapinlar- you have been wonderful with your work on this tablet . Your note made me realize that may be there is something wrong with the apk files I had copied from my other tablet. After spending many hours searching on google for sites that were not merely links to google play, I downloaded the apk files I needed. All of them installed perfectly !
Thanks once again to you, verygreen and bokbokan for making nook tablet the best tablet out there.

Hello, I followed your tutorial to the exact letter and all I got was my nook restarting several times before finally wiping itself and having to do the whole set up process again. I formatted the card and set the card to active like instructed. But which rar do I need? I am running the nook hd with 2.1.0. Software. I tried all the nook hd bootfiles rars listed and added the zip I wanted to install and it keeps rebooting and wiping.
Thanks

You need the one that says NookHD, CWM and BOOTFILES and ends in rar. You must extract the 5 files there to the SD. Be sure to copy the one named MLO first.

Accidently messed up lockscreen... Please help!

Hi, I have a nook Color running cm7.2 and using the ADW launcher.
Earlier I downloaded an app that allows me to have an iOS type lockscreen after I unlock the primary lockscreen. I set up quick unlock where you use the home button to unlock the tablet, but it doesn't recognize the Nook button as the home button when it is.
Now I can't unlock my tablet.
Oops.
Is there any way to reset the lock screen or somehow fix this without formatting the card?
Thanks.
If it's a free app you could adb to /data/app and rename the offending lock screen apk. Just add ".bak" (without quotes) to the end of the filename. You may have to reboot it but the app should be gone after that.
If you at running CM entirely of the SD card you should be able to browse to it with the card plugged into a computer and rename the file there.

Thanks for your reply, but that's not exactly the problem I'm having.
The problem I'm having is that I set up quick unlock so it would unlock when I hit the home button. The nook doesn't recognize the Nook button on the tablet as home button. I don't have the home button set up on the screen as a soft button.
Thanks for your help.

Sorry I misunderstood.
You might have a look at this thread :http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=971768. If it is the home key you have as the quick unlock it should be keyevent 3 instead of 82 in the command.
Hope it works, good luck.
No problem! Thanks for your help! Il

You need to go to my tips thread and install the alternate CWM for SD in section B in the second post. Then use that to do a factory reset. That should remove the unlock.

[Q] Nook Color & Cyanogenmod 11

I'm running 10.2.1-encore and gapps 20130813. I'm trying to use the auto updater to update to version 11 however when I do it says theres no gapp installer. I'm installing (rather trying to)to a 2gb sd card in my nook. I have no clue how to update to version 11. I've looked on here, and one guide in particular seemed helpful. It actually helped me install the current version I'm using but the auto-updater won't install 11. Apparently I'm to dumb to figure this out, could someone help me get 11 on my nook color and the new google apps version?

You cannot autoupdate to CM11. CM11 requires entirely different CWM, rom and gapps.

Start over by putting the newest image (rev8c) on an SD. It is required by CM11. But that image also requires at least a 4GB SD. If you want to save your apps and settings, use Titanium Backup.
