[Q] How to re-install Internet Explorer? - Windows 8 General

I know I know, use Chrome as my main browser and I've recently downloaded Firefox. But sometime today i have realized that I do not have IE11 (I have Windows 8.1) installed. Perhaps I uninstalled it or something has happened. I want to know how to install back another IE11. I have check microsoft's Website: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-ca/internet-explorer/download-ie and I have got nothing. I then was looking through my Program Files I found that my IE folder was still there. There was something called iexplore.exe (as seen in my screenshot) http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa741312.aspx and I want to know if that app will install my IE back? Even thoug it is not critical, I would still like to know how to get it back. Thanks.

iexplore.exe is internet explorer, you cannot uninstall internet explorer without breaking windows. All you have done is deleted the shortcut or disabled it from add/remove windows features.

Oh, OK. So well, i think I have disabled it then. Do you know how to renable it?
I have included a screen shot of something. Is this what you are talking about? Cause it is stilled check and no IE.

You are sure that you havent simply deleted the shortcut?
Go to the start screen. Just type "internet explorer"

Yeah, im sure.

so typing internet explorer gave you nothing?

Type <WIN> + R. In the run dialog, type in iexplore. When IE shows up, see what version it is.

Man I see you. Good Job. Thanks a lot. So after running iexplore I came up with IE11, as seen in the screen shot below, thanks to you. Now, why is it not under my apps or programs? As seen in my screen shots it does not show up when i type internet explorer but it does when I type iexplore. Could you explain that?
PS. I also like your confidence, by saying "When IE shows up...". You know that it must still be installed. Awesome

You never lost the program; IE is built into windows, and Windows won't run without it. I'm not sure what happened to your apps shortcut. Iexplore.exe is simply the file name for all versions of IE.
This URL is for IE 10, but it should work.

I would recommend unchecking it in the Windows Features dialog, hitting OK, then going back and adding it again... but yeah, you somehow deleted the shortcuts from the Start menu.
By the way, it's entirely possible to remove iexplore.exe (the browser); what you can't remove without breaking things is mshtml.dll (the rendering engine).

I used to disable it, nothing ever happened.

Re-enabling it will fix any changes anyhow.

8125 Slide-Out Keyboard

I can be on this website, or any other, and EVERY time I slide out the keyboard, instantly my device closes the websites and go back to the Today screen! This is a replacement 8125 because the one I had replaced did the same thing, and now this one is doing it, too.Any info please!HELP!Cingular 8125ROM 2.25.11.1
Did you install any additional software on the device?
Does it close everything on your device or does it only shut down the Internet Explorer? You can check if it was clsed completely in START -> SETTINGS -> SYSTEM -> MEMORY - Please open another application and then start IE, slide out the keyboard and check if all running programs were closed or only minimized.
My first question would be about any additional software that's been installed, too. I've never had that problem with my 8125 and can't replicate it, either -- by using the ActiveSync passthrough connection, EDGE/GPRS or WiFi.
What third party software do you have installed??

Actually after closing from the internet, it does go back to the Today screen no matter what I open from the start menu. Settings or Programs will not stay and the internet was minimized. I have several 3rd party apps installed. How do I know which one/s are giving me this problem?Cingular 8125ROM 2.25.11.1
List what software you're using so we can do a comparison and see which one might be the offending program. It's either that, or uninstall them one at a time to check it out.

After doing a soft re-set to fix, I opened file explorer which is factory installed, and not 3rd party, then I opened the internet back to here, slid out the keyboard, and the device still converted to its landscape mode and went back to the Today screen, and nothing when tapped stayed on. Do I need to uninstall everything and re-try the keyboard? It has to be somewhere in the keyboard, because I slid out the keyboard from the Today screen, nothing was opened, pushed the keyboard back in, tapped on settings in the start menu..did not stay, went back to the Today screen. I pushed the red phone hardware button out of curiosity, and was able to have settings or whatever to stay on after that.If I don't slide out the keyboard, the device works fine.Cingular 8125ROM 2.25.11.1

20MB of each.I have 85% of everything on my 512MB storage card.
use Task manager, or Move 3rd party application to your SD card
You can try by moving all your third party application to your sd card(one thing you have to remap your registry setting to the new location). Then switch off your phone, remove the sd card and then switch on the phone. now almost your 3d party application are stoppped. while on it will give some link not found error. in My cases when ever i am facing problem with 3rd party application i am doing this, But this is at your own risk.
One oter method. Install Batery Pack Pro. With Which you can see the minimized process In the top by taping downward arrow.(if the process minimized)(This one you have to buy.It is not Freeeeeee )
Or Use Task manager with which you can activate the minimized window.
My optionis 3 or 2 one.
Well,
I would do a hard reset on my device, then installing every single application step by step and check afterwards if internet will work before I install the next one! That seems to be the only way to figure out what application causes the problem!
A soft reset won't really help because of some programs start with the device or at least they start some services!
If you can safely back up your device I would say go for it and try to find that app what screws up your device! After you located the program do not install it anymore but try to find a similar program what does the same job! Nobody wants to have faulty apps on his device! And if it does something like shutting down your running programs ... - ... who knows what else it does!
BTW: It could be a 'non-really-harmful' virus which might stick in one of your apps ... depending on where you downloaded your programs from! Since you have exactly the same issues like on your previous model ...
After a lot of troubleshooting, I discovered a 3rd party software called Today Player by MBRO, found at FreeCabs.de had the virus that gave me this problem. I re-installed the other programs I un-installed, and now my 8125 is working like it's supposed to do. THIS IS A WARNING.. I WOULD NOT INSTALL TODAY PLAYER BY MBro. if I were you! I want to thank everyone that took their time and concern to help. You're a bunch of great guys!!Cingular 8125ROM 2.25.11.1

Yeah,
and I wouldn't even say that it is a virus (unless you downloaded it from emule or so?) - can also be a 'dirty programming': people write an application, test it on a WM5 PPC and it works fine, so, they go ahead and release it for all WM5 and higher. The main thing they often forget, is, to write a clean code following the Windows API!

Wirelessly Sync folders on PC AND WiMO?

Hi,
So here's what I want to do:
I have a folder on my pc with files in it. I want that to sync that with a Cloud storage type system online. Then I want a folder on my Touch Pro 2 to sync with that online folder. Now I know what your thinking and before you flame me with stuff like dropbox, sugarsync, mesh, myphone etc... they can't do that. They sync from pc to online just fine, but then on the tp2 I have to navigate to the web to retrieve files, or with sugarsync there is an app to install and I can load the app and download the files to a folder that way. I don't want to do that. I want a folder to always stay sync'd. I've search all over and can't find that kind of functionality. This would be real handy in a scenario where i need to constantly sync 5 or more phones together with multiple pc's. I don't want to tell the user, ok go to www.getdropbox.com or load this or load that...
I hope I am just missing something and it does exsist.

Unless i missed something, then it only works that way if your able to install mesh and sign in on your phone. I didnt think they were accepting anymore ppl for testing on mobile devices. I installed it and checked just to see. Without this, your forced to grab files from the web.

Anyone have any thoughts about the actual topic of this thread? There has to be a way... No one needs to do this?!

How would that be deviating? If there is a way to get into Mesh and it's not closed, that would potentially directly solve the original post.

I will report if this works. Thanks!
it definitely worked for me. you'll see that windows mobile becomes an option in your mesh after visiting this link. but getting the program to validate on your device (touch pro 2) is hit or miss. i just had to try it many times and finally it worked. then there is also an issue of the program crashing upon startup that i mentioned above. i've narrowed that down to being related to the memory card. the program will start if i remove the memory card prior to executing it. i can then put the memory card back in while the program is in the login screen and it works. still trying to find a better solution. let me know if you have any luck.

Been playing with it all night. So far it's working flawlessly. No crashes at all. I have a 8gb storage card. It's sync'd to and from 1 other verizon phones, and 4 pc's... It's cool, you take a pic with your phone and voila it's on my wife's phone too, as well as the mobile picture directory at home. Would love to help you get it working too. Have you checked out this forum?

You can also use Remote Touch. It doesn't sync, but it does allow you to transfer files remotely, back and forth from your desktop and your phone. And of course, you get the added benefit of controlling your desktop remotely with your phone.
When I'm in a hurry to leave the office I'll queue a bunch of files in RemoteTouch and have my phone download them while I'm on the road.

Can you tell me the exact phone you have? Is it the Verizon touch pro 2? Maybe it's my brand of memory card? It's definitely good when it's working.
Also, did you have any trouble validating the phone on the mesh? Took me several attempts and it seems other people had the same issue. I have been to the site you linked a little bit but maybe more research is in order.

[Q] Nook Simple Touch - all set up and it's partly fun

Hi all, recently bought one of these nice little devices myself. This is how I got on, not all that's supposed to work actually does.
Rooting with Touchnnoter 2.1.31 was easy enough and I soon found SearchMarket to access Android Market. What does work: Kindle, QuickPic, AdAway, DropBox, GoodNews
So I could be reading books and news, but I'd like to have a bit more, namely web access!
- ReadItLater/Pocket is shown as purchased in Market, but can't be installed
- Stock browser shows starting page as Error404, directly opening another page works first time only, but links or scrolling don't. Plus it often crashes.
- pre-installed Opera Mini didn't work, so I uninstalled and reinstalled:
a) only clicking "accept" REALLY fast allowed me to open it at all, otherwise it'd crash
b) spiegel.de and BBCNews always crash, even with images turned off I only briefly see the page layout
- Opera Mini Next doesn't open,
- Opera Mobile and Evernote are supposed to work, but don't appear on SearchMarket
- Dolphin Browser often crashes as well, plus no add-ons can be found
Any ideas why this is happening?
Plus: can anybody tell me how to access the external sdcard? I tried several file managers, activated root access etc. but have never been able to access /mnt/ or external_sd or emmc. So I haven't been able to sideload any apk either.
Thanks!
I use Opera Mobile, I found the apk somewhere (not on Market).
The SD card appears as /sdcard in the system (i.e. shell or ADB).
It is the second device mounted on the USB (i.e. desktop).
If you are writing an application you need the permission android.permission.WRITE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE.
There's also Instafetch as an alternative clipper.
Regards market errors, it's nice to do adb installs anyway, just a matter of getting hold of the .apk, possibly from AppBrain. OperaMobile (not to be mistaken with the lighter streaming OperaMini) works well for me. Perhaps there's a apk direct from Opera available.
It sounds like you have a problem with market. Perhaps adblock could be interfering? As I say, check out alternative ways to install in the interim.
The last couple versions of opera mini don't work but luckily I backed up my apps via airdroid and have a version that works. Readitlater/Pocket does not work because their recent updates have dropped android 2.1 support. Have you tried es file explorer? In ES you tap the home icon on the toolbar and select Phone the sdcard should then appear as a folder

I see both Opera Mobile and Evernote through SearchMarket.
Try to see if you can find Opera Mobile directly from Market (not SearchMarket)
Market -> App -> Communication -> Top Free
Opera Mobile is on the second page.
Alternatively you could go to Google Play on your desktop/laptop
and see if the Nook shows up on the devices (its called Phone).
Then install them on the website for the device, and a few seconds later you will see them install on the nook.

play.google.com/store/apps
Browsing and installing from the webstore is definitely way faster than on the Nook.
Also, I use another app called Quick Search Widget. Launch it as an app or from the widget. It can search the Market, and also doubles as a Google/wikipedia/... search widget.
Wow, thank you all for your tips - quite a kick-start and steep learning curve!
SD card: my bad, as "sdcard" was available. But as I recently formatted this drawer on my SGS (wanting to format the external sdcard, but wiping the OS...) I was extra cautious. Settled.
I downloaded adb and installed apks, great! I still don't get it how to do this on the Nook itself. There's something in NookColorTools about the app having to be in /system/apps/ or else it won't work...
And I'm quite proud to have figured out why Market didn't work! There was something wrong with the content filter: although set to "all", a lot of apps were blocked. Having switched to "mature", I'm in business with Evernote and trying out Instafetch.
BTW: @Schneicw, you're the best! The working OperaMini.apk was the best birthday present (couple of days early)! You wouldn't happen to have an old ReadItLater.apk lying around as well?!?
Next, I'll give the ebooklauncher a shot. Fingers crossed!

You probably do not have install of Non-Market apps enabled.
Bring up NookColor Tools, and you will see check box with "Allow Non Market Apps". This might be checked (but still not working).
So you need to uncheck this box and recheck it.
Also try out remote install of apps from the google play website play.google.com/store/apps from a laptop (you need to login with the same account as on your nook), I find that really convenient...

I've got my Nook Simple Touch rooted with latest Touchnooter. The thing is, I don't want to use the Android Market at all. I want to install the F-Droid repository instead, as it has nothing but Free Software Apps, and has satisfied all my needs on my Droid phone, and I would prefer to keep as much of my data away from google as I can.
I have the FDroid.apk file. But I can't understand how to install it. I have the box (about allowing install of outside apps) in NookColor Tools checked. But I don't know how to get to the file on the SD card to start installing it.
What is this I've been hearing about installing with adb? Does that mean you can't just go to a file manager, select the apk, and begin installing? Because that is essentially how F-Droid installs its apps. Just does it all on its own, you just click "Install". But if that method doesn't work on the NST. Than F-Droid won't work
Any help would be very appreciated. God Bless ya guys!!
P.S. also the stock browser doesn't really work right. just goes to a black screen after a couple different web pages. And Opera (the one installed by Touchnooter) won't open at all. Just flashes the screen once, then stays on the home screen.
We really need a custom made CyanogenMod Rom!!! I get the feeling it would solve alot of our issues.

You should be able to connect the nook to your Windows machine and copy the .apk onto the sdcard.
For browser Opera Mobile works for me.
TouchNooter also has the Amazon Market, which you could use.

well as a first note, I would like to say I have no Windows machines at all. I am 100% Linux
But I already have the apk file on my SD card. Its just I have no idea how to get to the file to install it. I thought that the app "Super Manager" was a file explorer/manager of some sort. But it does the same thing as Opera, I click on the icon in the App drawer, and the screen just flashes once or twice. Then returns the the home screen. No thing saying that it has crashed or anything.
So that is where I'm stuck.
Also, as a side note, I wish to use the F-Droid repository, because I want to use nothing but Open Source (Also known as Freedom Based) Software. Including markets. It's the number one reason why I use nothing but Linux on my machines. Linux is also faster than Mac or Windows, but won't get into that can of worms right now. hahaha.
You could write your own file explorer Jk
adb install seems to be the way for you.
Google "ADB download install", there should be a ton of links.
However now you will have software created by google installed/running on

Lol Well I have next to zero programming knowledge. But when I find the the best open source file explorer I'm definitely gonna throw the dev more than a few bucks for his hard work.
I'll look into adb installing for now. Just really hope and pray we get a Cyanogen or some other real Rom ported to NST soon. I think would solve all our issues with a totally different rom on it.
P.S. yes, having proprietary google software is gonna bug the crap outta me!! lol

it was removed.
Learn metro, its actually pretty good once you get the hang of it with or without the touch
It was in fact removed well before release. "redpill" (what is controlled by the registry value you seek) is an MS-internal test mode for secret and/or experimental features. It's been present for at least a few previous beta products too, covering things like Win7's new taskbar. Only the very first public build of Win8 used the Redpill switch; everything after that had it built in.
There are third-party apps which disable TIFKAM (The Interface Formerly Known As Metro) to a lesser or greater degree, but I can't recommend any of them as I don't know what they actually do to the system. Personally, I just move the mouse to the lower-left corner (where the Start button appears usually), and then Right-click followed immediately by a Left-click. That will take you to the desktop from anywhere. Another way to do it is hit [Win]+d, the "Show Desktop" shortcut from previous Windows versions still works on Win8, and if you aren't on the desktop it will take you there.
To boot to desktop, change
Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\Shell
from "explorer.exe" to "explorer.exe /select,explorer.exe"
There are other ways w/o involving external software, one of which is to set up a task that runs on desktop. To find out, Google.
As far as disabling Metro altogether (ie the hot-corners), use any of the common 3rd-party fixes like Classic Shell. They work fine. Then you'd have basically an improved Win7 with some new features.
Unlike the "embrace change" advocates here, I think the user should decide if he wants to use Metro.
Good tip on the Shell registry change, thanks!
Thanks for the shell reg change, nice find. But we do have a choice to use metro or not, MS isn't a public service made to suite our needs, its a private company that can do as it wants, whether that is what we want as users is a different story, the best way to to affect change on private companies is to vote with your wallet so to speak. I'm not arguing that metro is better or anything there are issues with win 8, but as it stands there is a choice, an buying something then complaining it isn't what you want is perhaps a little silly, an we wouldn't do it in any other market cept the movie industry of course! Nope, MS will have your money an they won't be to bothered about anything else.
Sent from my Samsung Focus S using XDA Windows Phone 7 App
>it stands there is a choice, an buying something then complaining it isn't what you want is perhaps a little silly
The OP asks if there's a way to boot to desktop, not whether he wants Metro. Please restrict the editorializing and proselytizing to appropriate threads. Thanks.
BTW, credit for the reg edit goes to another in the Win8 Dev subforum. It's a compact variation of starting a desktop task (the task in this case being Explorer itself). Explorer's parameters are below for those interested. You can vary the results by experimenting with different combinations:
/n: Opens a new window in single-paned (My Computer) view for each item selected, even if the new window duplicates a window that is already open.
/e: Uses Windows Explorer view. Windows Explorer view is most similar to File Manager in Windows version 3.x. Note that the default view is Open view.
/root,<object>: Specifies the root level of the specified view. The default is to use the normal namespace root (the desktop). Whatever is specified is the root for the display.
/select,: Specifies the folder to receive the initial focus. If "/select" is used, the parent folder is opened and the specified object is selected.
Usage examples here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/130510
Guys no need to go into the shell!!
Get this app called pokki(search on google) .Install it.Once you install it click the pokki icon on desktop. Then check the boot to desktop option. If you want you can also get back the start button, thereby saying goodbye to metro altogether.
Hope this helps....

Unlike the "embrace change" advocates here, I think the user should decide if he wants to use Metro.

...I was referring to your post above, its irrelevant we think it should do, it is what it is. There's no need to get all uppity about it. Once again, thank you for the interesting find.

You should work on your reading comprehension. I said "the user should decide," not what I think Win8 should or shouldn't be. And you're welcome.
I'm using the classic shell add on:
http://classicshell.sourceforge.net/
It allows one to bypass the Win 8 UI and go directly to Windows. Plus it puts the start menu back in. I personally see no reason to try and disable the Win 8 new shell; just ignore it and stay on the desktop.
The only exception is that the new UI has some settings on my ultrabook that are not present in the Desktop interface (like controlling the GPS).

To be honest, I found ClassicShell to be buggy and unreliable. It frequently caused Explorer to crash.
I used Start8 through the trial and it seemed decent enough (I didn't crash hourly), but by the time that it expired I felt that Metro was just fine and didn't bother.

I have it on one system, and although I haven't noticed it to cause any stability issues, I found Start8 to be more refined.
In any case, here are the top start menu/metro avoidance programs:
Classic Shell
Start8
StartMenu7
StartMenu8
Pokki
ViStart (linked but not recommended because it tries it's best to install all kinds of 3rd party toolbars)

I found just the opposite. I tried Metro for a while and just found it didn't do anything objectively better than the start menu, and the hot corners kept getting in my way (several of my programs have a lot of tools/buttons at the corners and edges and I was continually activating the various hidden menus). I tried Start8 and it works perfectly.
Theres an app called "FxxkMetro.exe" (actually spelt like that). It's designed to "seek out" and terminate all running instances of Metro, completely disabling it.

How can I disable Windows Feedback on my 950 XL?

I want to disable the stupid Windows feedback app, which is always popping up when I press the <on/off> and <down volume> keys by accident.
Any suggestions?
As far as I know, that's not possible

Thanks Teddy. I think I am going to have to find a way to root the phone. There's lots about it I like (e.g. the update to the camera app that means I now have a panorama option that actually works quite well), and lots about it I don't like (e.g. the fact that it seems not to be able learn the words I use regularly - every time I type "for" it insists on telling me I really meant to type "fir"; and the bluetooth is pretty bad - I can't connect to my Bose SL III reliably, but my ancient Samsung Galaxy II has no problems).

Well, there are some tools available to root the phone. The way I can see that might work is to completely remove Win Feedback from the phone by accessing the OS FileSystem and deleting app's files.
You can very easily gain access to the filesystem: Create a shortcut to your C: drive on pc and upload it on the phone, from here open it with File Explorer and you're on the root of the device (this actually works ). From there try to find the Win Feedback app and delete its files. Be careful as doing something wrong, you might need to reset the device.

Hmmm ... tried that but I must have stuffed it up. All I get on the phone is a link to the shortcut on my PC. I'll try emailing the shortcut to myself on my phone, then save it from there. Will let you know what happens.
LATER: Nope, that didn't work.
I have the answer !!!
