[Q] How to files from PC to Knox - Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Has anybody used knox? I am fooling around with it and for the life of me can't figure out how to get documents from the PC to the knox container. I looked through the Samsung material regarding Knox with no luck.
Moving files to the phone using the USB cable is fine but I can't seem to put anything in the Knox area.
Thanks

I'm sure there's a school for hard Knox somewhere that can help.

According to Samsung everything must be transferred through the cloud service.

This had me beaten for a while.
Two ways to do it ...
Method one -
Upload your files to a cloud server such as Dropbox or Box.
Access that same cloud service using the web-browser while inside knox.
Download the file/s while inside knox and they will then be available in the knox file manager.
Method two -
Connect your samsung device to PC with USB cable.
Copy your files onto device or onto the SD card.
Start knox
Return to personal area.
While in personal area go into 'my files' file manager.
Select file/s so it has the tick in the corner.
Go up to the menu at the top right corner.
Choose 'Move to knox'
Files appear in knox, disappear in personal area.
This works with single or multiple files, but NOT with whole folders.
Hope this helps everyone.

KNOX setup issues.

i recently bought the note 3 which came preinstalled with knox. So i thought i should give it a try. So i went thru all the steps of setting it up but at the end when i hit next, an error message pops up saying
"Your device is not authorized to enter Samsung KNOX mode"
anyone facing this problem or is it just me? i have asked a few of my friends who bought it and yet they dont have the same problem as me.

From what I've read, that happens when your KNOX Warranty is 0x1, which is caused by having flashed a new Recovery, or having rooted your device.

If anyone would've bothered to search what Knox is and how it gets installed...
Knox is a safe enterprise container running in a secure sandbox (container isolation) on Note 3/S4 . Like running another instance of an OS that gets secure VPN to the an enterprise server. On this OS you can install only secure apps, approved by Samsung.
Long story short, in order to work, an IT manager needs to setup a SSO with an enterprise server and also Samsung gets paid a monthly fee for container deployment. It's Samsung that deploys(installs) Knox on your device, when an IT manager request them to do it.
Knox is nothing that has an advantage when using the device as a private one ( an I am not sure why would one need to run Knox on a private machine as long as it's not involved in an enterprise network/mail). It is not an antivirus/antispam thinghy. Is it a Secure Environment that complies with enterprise security protocols ( login/password are not enough); eg. you cannot set up mail connection/remote desktop to an secure enterprise mail/network on a regular Android device because of lack of security parameters. IT managers can remotely access the knox container ( with full privileges, edit /wipe) but they cannot see your private data. Also, all data on Knox is encrypted.

i accept but am getting below error
your device is not authorised to enter knox mode
htc9420, condescending drivel.
Knox works perfectly well on the standard (unrooted) Note 3 without an IT Manager.
Appless, if you are not using in conjunction with work use and an IT manager, you can you use Knox for private use.
Its easy to set up from the Knox icon in the Samsung icon folder.
It is possible it is a fault, or the carrier has disabled the use the of Knox.
You can run a very limited amount of applications only, like the camera, gallery, email, diary, contacts and storage of files.
You can also download a few Knox programmes from the Samsung store.
If you do not get a solution from the Samsung store you may have to open a ticket with Samsung telephone customer support direct and find out the answer.
However be precise what you are asking as likely they will have to go check with a higher level support.

Once thing everybody should be aware of its that to moving files to the Knox portion of the phone has to be done through the cloud. No USB - PC connection.
I was setting it up for personal use and was trying to move documents over. I feel this extra step of uploading files (that you want to keep secure) to another service and then downloading them onto the phone is too much hassle.
Plzzz Help!

Here's the reason why you keep facing the error message:
https://www.samsungknox.com/en/system/files/admin-doc/Samsung_KNOX_User_Guide_(Enterprise)_2.pdf
Samsung KNOX cannot be installed on a rooted device. (A rooted device bypasses installed
security features by allowing user-installed software to run privileged commands, potentially
enabling or deleting system files, or allowing access to the device’s operating system or
hardware.)
A warranty bit is applied to the device and Samsung can check whether device is rooted or not by
checking this bit. If an incompatible kernel image is being loaded into memory, the warranty bit is
changed from "0x0" to "0x1". Then it's impossible to install KNOX container on the device and a
KNOX container which is already installed on the device can't be opened.
Samsung KNOX™ User Guide: Enterprise Edition Copyright © 2013 Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. 28
To Check the Warranty Bit
Boot the device in ODIN Mode to determine if warranty bit has been altered:
1. Simultaneously press Volume down, Home, and Power buttons.
2. When warning screen is displayed, press the Volume up button.
The Warranty Bit Status (“KNOX Warranty Void”) is displayed in upper left hand corner of the
display.

[Q] Google Nexus 4: photo recovery -safest ROOT possible (pun) 4.4.2

In short, i deleted my photos by accident, and deeply desire to recover them.
Data Recovery programs wont work on my Google Nexus 4, for a combination of reasons. Namely, because it is not a usb mass storage device, it is internal memory, and because the phone has not ever been rooted. If it is possible to recover the photos without rooting the phone, this would be favorable. But i doubt this is possible.
Is there a way to root my phone without causing a "factory wipe/reset"? Perhaps by avoiding unlocking the bootloader?I am not even 100% sure if this can be achieved on 4.4.2. as of now. I am continuing to investigate, but if anyone has the know-how, please let me know.
this forum here, suggests something that might work, but at the end of the forum, it suggests that 4.4.2 is still impossible to root without wiping.
-There are methods of scanning the phone after it has been rooted, but i can't find the right kind of rooting i need.
-There are methods of copying the phone's hard drive -bit-by-bit- to my PC in .RAW format, and then converting this into something that can be mounted like a real drive, which could be scanned and from which photos could be recovered., but this method requires a rooted phone as well
-there is a possibility of trying to mount the phone on a linux OS, and then scan it possibly. but i don't know if this is impossible.
i am reading the basics in the meantime.
LG Google Nexus 4, 4.4.2
Build:KOT49H

Desktop PC: Windows 7 Professional 64bit, service pack 1.
Laptop: mac...
you can read more about things i have tried and my other concerns, in greater detail below.
LOTS OF METHODS, LITTLE CLARITY
I just came back from visiting some dear friends in china and purchased an upgraded version of dropbox. Before I uploaded my photos, I accidentally deleted my entire album.
What is the safest and surest attempt for recovery?
1. i need to avoid installing anything on my phone as much as possible - (lest it overwrite the empty areas where the "deleted" photos reside.)
2. i need to keep my phone off as much as humanly possible (lest it overwrite the empty areas where the "deleted" photos reside.)
3. almost without saying - id like to avoid bricking my phone, (lest it destroy my "deleted" photos)
SOFTWARE RECOVERY SECTION
All known software recovery programs won't find any data on my phone because either they are made for scanning mountable drives, USB mass storage devices, or some simply cannot scan the device unless i root my phone (although I am not sure if rooting is directly correlated with successful scanning, or if rooting the phone simply allows me to carry on with other necessary steps prior to "successful scanning"- like allowing me to installing apps that allow me to mount the internal memory as a scannable drive). Enabling USB Debugging, or enabling/disabling MTP is not the same as enabling USB mass storage mode. Seeing the Nexus 4 as "portable Device" under my computer does not mean it is a mounted drive that i can scan with a recover program. No matter what, nothing seems to work with the Google Nexus 4 as it is now.
***I first tried installing the driver's through the ANDROID SDK, by unzipping the contents from the downloaded zip file and by double clicking the .exe file. Double-clicking the .exe file resulted in a cmd dos-style window popping up and immediately disappearing. Perhaps i needed to put the extracted folder on "C:\"?
REGARDLES....later, I have used WugFresh Nexus Root Toolkit v1.8.2 for ensuring proper driver installation for my phone. I have only used this software to install drivers. It walks you through bad-driver uninstallation/clean up, it retrieves the latest drivers, installs them, and then tests their workability for you and lets you know if the drivers were successfully installed.
I have not used Wug's toolkit to root or hack my phone... yet....
Below is a list of software I have used on my Windows machine and my mac. These simply will not work with the phone as it is right now.

Android Data Recovery
Dr. Fone
Recuva
- i havent tried disk digger. but it requires a rooted phone.
SO simple methods will simply not work? Please correct me if I am wrong.
BIT BY BIT CLONE METHOD
This seems to be the most tedious (but thorough) method for actually preparing something that can be truly scanned for photo-recovery. This method seems to create a bit-by-bit copy of the phone to my computer, which can be converted and mounted and then scanned.
However, it requires rooting. Not to mention, it recommends non-destructive rooting. Which leads me to the next section ...
ROOTING section (and its problems)
In the fruitless sections listed above, it always seems to lead towards rooting as a requirement. Most people say you should root your phone when you first get it, because, i suppose rooting is "synonymous" with a wipe/reset. I believe this reset happens as a result of the bootloader being unlocked. According to MY limited understanding, this unlocking process essentially causes a "factory reset" which wipes the phone, and then catastrophically overwrites the precious space where the deleted photos currently reside. this is unacceptable. I imagine, this "reset" is for security reasons.
Most people seem to suggest that you make a back up before you root. This isn't helpful for my situation because we are talking about retrieving deleted data. I cannot make a back-up of deleted data.
Is it really possible to root without wiping the Google Nexus 4?
Is it even profitable to consider rooting a viable option? I don't imagine myself enjoying a rooted phone as much as others on this forum. I would hate to be creating a black hole for malicious software to breed. i am only concerned with data retrieval for this one time in my life. Is rooting the only viable option? If i root, won't that make the previously mentioned software-scanning section (e.g., Dr. fone), more viable than the BIT-BY-BIT section tedious and pointless by comparison?
All in all, I think it most likely that i will need to root my phone and do the bit by bit copy. If a rooting-first-step is the final conclusion, then I am looking for clear and careful advice for my specific phone on how to root it without jeopardizing the deleted photos (e.g., avoiding a "factory reset" from unlocking the bootloader, or perhaps avoiding unlocking the bootloader altogether) and how to hopefully carry on from there. I don't even know if avoiding "unlocking the bootloader" will virtually guarantee a non-destructive root method
Rooting gets crazy because it leads to necessary installations of SuperUser, busybox, kernels, roms, etc... There are so many unfamiliar vague terms for a beginner like me and it is taking tons of time to break through. I am uninterested in keeping my phone rooted, or maintaining a lifestyle with a rooted phone. if we can move expeditiously from point A to B and then back, (get in, get the photos, and get out,) that would be the most awesome plan.
LINUX METHOD?
is there another way to get to the deleted photos?.
I do not know if 'mounting' the phone is akin to 'mounting' a scannable drive. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fw2MKGIgyF4
maybe this is another wild goose chase?
IN SUMMARY
1. It would be helpful if there was a root-free photo-recovery software solution that actually works (this is unlikely to be in existence) with an unrooted nexus 4
2. It would be helpful if it is possible to root without destroying my chances of recovering my deleted photos, with the goal of allowing recovery software access (deeper access) to my phone, i.e. disk digger or if necessary... a bit-by-bit copy to my PC.
3. it would be interesting if the nexus 4 can be magically mounted and scanned on the linux operating system
4. It would be MOST HELPFUL if there was a clear consensus on what direction to take, because there is a lot of misinformation out there. One wrong step and i could end up shooting myself in the foot twice (if i inadvertently reset my phone), or three times (if i brick my phone).
5. can the phone be put back to normal (i.e. unroot) after rooting? or does this require that i make a full backup of the phone in its current state? ( i tried using WUGS toolkit to backup my media, but it wont do it unless i unlock the bootloader... back to that problem again )
I'm sorry for sounding like an idiot. I have been at this for a more than a few hours. I sincerely appreciate any help and consideration towards this specific situation in advance, and the hope that this forum has already offered me.

[Q]Kitkat and USB mass storage mode

So I used a HTC One X for two years and I used it a lot as a Dropbox synced external USB mass storage device, so am kinda interested in getting my S4 doing the same thing. Pretty much out of the box I left it updating and it's now a shiny S4 running 4.4.2.
Sadly, after the update it seems that it is somewhat crippled.
Apparently, the thing to use is USB mass storage enabler, for which it needs root. So I rooted using Autoroot (and triggered Knox 0x1) and installed Busybox, which is all working well. I also found that apps cant write to the SD Card, so I fixed that too....
However, all the different ways I have tried the USB mass storage app, the best I can get is an empty USB drive.
I've trawled through a series of other threads and blogs, but they all seem to recommend using the same applications and techniques, which seems not to be working for me.
Any other suggestions greatly received.

Thanks to jjdoctor. Works like a charm. I have a Samsung S9505, Kitkat 4.4.2, rooted with Knox 0x1.
I installed SManager from google play.
I downloaded the scripts to /storage/emulated/0/documents/scripts/massstorage
I opened SManager and navigated to the above script directory.
I selected the "Mass Storage" script.
I enabled "su" (green skull and crossbones second from left) and "bg" (looks like an &, second from right)
I selected "run"
Black screen with lines of text (it's a terminal) and it then appeared as a USB Mass Storage device.
Even does not dismount it from Android, which is nice. I hate to think how that's gonna blow up in my face at some indeterminate point in the future. Almost tempted to add some conditions so I can use it as a toggle.... but for now its awesome.

[Q] i9505 Access hidden picture files off device (Broken Screen)

Hi guys, bit of a problem here.
I've managed to foolishly destroy the display on my Galaxy S4 i9505. I plan on getting the phone replaced as part of a refurbishment plan with my carrier. I've backed up all the data, with the exception of one thing:
The images in the Samsung gallery app which I have used the "Hide files" option on.
The phone itself is in working order, with the exception of the display, which is not working at all, a tiny corner of the display is mostly fine but not responding to touch.
I read somewhere that these hidden files are placed in a subfolder with a \.hide\ directory name, although when I plug the USB cable in and attempt to access the files using Windows Explorer, I cannot see this directory and the images are not present in the existing directory.
A few things about the status of the phone:
Currently, the phone is NOT rooted. If a potential solution requires root, I should be able to do so without the use of the display, am I right?
USB Debug mode is off.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

[Q] Touchscreen doesn't respond after using bogus photo recovery software

Hello, ladies and lads!
Here's a short version of where I'm at: after installing Wondershare' s dr.phone Recovery on my mom's PC and using it on her phone:
its screen won't respond to touch (can't enter SIM card's PIN nor open screen lock)
the On/Off button won't turn off the phone on long press (maybe due to screen lock)
on restart there's a yellow text that reads "Set Warranty Bit : kernel"
the physical buttons still work
I can see the phone's files and folders only through PC's command prompt, using ADB ('This PC\Galaxy Grand Prime' folder in Win Explorer says it's empty).
Ideally I want to keep her data (FB Messenger, Skype, Chrome, WiFi passwords, etc), and her phone to function again. What do you think I should do?
I think I need an advice and suggestions from someone more experienced than me - I don't even know trusted sites where to download the firmware roms from.
The phone's details are (I'm afraid you'll have to walk me through to get more details to this list, as I'm new to the forum):
Phone: Samsung Grand Prime
Model name: SM-G530FZ
Firmware version: G530FZXXS1BQC2 (Android 5.0.2 with Baltic bloatware, I guess)
Now in detail:
My knowledge and experience regarding the smartphone software & restoration is very basic (I've only restored the firmware to a LG-L70 once some years ago, and that's it).
Before the problem I lost some over 600 media files from that phone by Cutting and Pasting a folder from phone's internal SD to PC's disc. Now I learned never to Cut-Paste important or irreplaceable files. The files ended up on the phone, because a folder with over 800 files couldn't be uploaded to the Google Drive (the camera's folder had over 1k files in it, so I moved some of them to another folder, which the phone created on the internal partition rather than the SD Card, where the original folder was from).
Instead of using a trusted software, I foolishly Googled a photo recovery program for phones, using my mom's PC. A list of bogus recovery program sites appeared (had to look them up on her PC, as I found only legit, widely trusted programs now, using my laptop. Those darn Google's personalized search result algorithms!).
Before using the dr.fone Recovery software I synced most of the data to her account.
Used the "free" dr.fone Recovery software as per its site's instructions, the phone did a restart and the touchscreen went unresponsive to touch. Later the software showed the lost files it found, and offered to restore them for a sum. Naturally I declined.
The software said that to return the phone to normal I need to disconnect the USB cable. I did so, but the phone's screen remained unresponsive to touch, even after restart (long-press [Pow] + [Vol-]).
I tried connecting an USB mouse via the dongle, but the mouse cursor didn't appear (maybe this phone doesn't have this functionality).
Now, after using that FAIL-covery program, I was overly cautious not to make things even worse.
I wanted to make a copy of the phone's internal SD state (or is it called a phone's hard drive?), to get the media files from the clone and to have a backup of mom's files.
But I failed: I downloaded APK, ncat, KingoRoot and BusyBox. Tried to follow the steps in this video: youtu[dot]be/KKkvkCgMeMA. Got stuck at "busybox not found" at about 10:27 mark in that video ("dd if=/dev/block/mmcblk0" "busybox nc -l -p 8888"). Turns out you need to run some of the apps from that phone prior to that step, and I don't know any workarounds.
Then I remembered that the files were on the external SD in the first place. Well duh! I then connected the Micro SD card to PC's reader via a Micro SD adapter. To make a copy of the SD card's 1s & 0s, and to restore the media files from said copy I used ZAR (Zero Assumption Recovery) z-a-recovery[dot]com/. The backup creation (an .ISO file or some such) and media recovery are free of charge.
Now I only need to remove duplicates and blurry pics (I think I had a Moleskinsoft's Clone Remover from an old PC magazine's CD lying around somewhere for the latter). Oh, and I better not forget to run a malware scanner on her PC and remove the mr.fone installed services and folders from it. Went a bit off-topic here, sorry!
Last I pulled a wifi passwords file with "adb pull /data/misc/wifi/wpa_supplicant.conf" command as per instructions on this page: mashtips[dot]com/see-wifi-password-android/. I don't know whether putting the file back on that phone will do the trick or not.
That's pretty much all.
I hope the situation can be resolved and I appreciate your input! :fingers-crossed: Maybe someone has come across a similar post, has constructive commentary or knows something obvious that I haven't come up with? Thank you in advance!
Edit 30 Jan '19: Got the phone working. Accessed the phone with a Chrome browser extension (name here). All accounts except some mail account were gone. WiFi didn't work.
Found a stock ROM here: (address here).
Found the Odin3 tool here: (address here). It came with a different locale ROM.
Flashed the 1st ROM with Odin. The screen started to work.
Flashed the 1st ROM with Odin again. The WiFi started working.
I'll update this with links soon.
I've got the exact same problem after using Dr Fone app!
Hi there.
I've got the same problem with my Samsung Galaxy Grand Prime after using Dr Fone, like you. I contacted Wondershare website from which I downloaded the app but they haven't bothered replying. Not happy at all!!
I contacted Samsung's support team and after trying different things (the usual stuff: reboot; remove the battery and SIM card; restart in Safe Mode; etc) which didn't solve the problem, they ended up telling me to reset the phone to the factory settings but that didn't work either.
Now my phone is stuck on the Samsung Galaxy Welcome screen which asks me to choose the language I want on my phone. The touchscreen is still unresponsive.
How did you manage to fix the problem if the touchscreen was unresponsive?
Thanks in advance for your help!
