Bleeding Data - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshootin

Greetings folks,
First month with the s4 and rogers sent me $50 in data overage charges.
I checked the phone and was shocked to see 8 Gb's of data use in 1 month.
I noticed that playing youtube or streaming on the video player runs through the data at a very high rate.
Does 500 Mb of data in less then 30 minutes of streaming seem normal for this phone ??
With the note 2 I had to work really hard to hit 4gb's an would usually run about 2.5 - 3 with heavy use.

streaming video will rocket you toward your data limit. seriously. youtube in 720 or 1080 will burn through a gig in an hour. use wifi for streaming.

Thanks glad to know I am not defective.
I want my Note 2 back !

That's a hard question to answer because it can vary a lot and it depends on other things such as:
what other applications you use and have installed
whether you have wifi and Bluetooth on often
how often you use your phone for other things (internet, videos, games, GPS etc)
whether your phone often goes into roaming mode
and what type of ROM you have
But in general, I get a solid 7 to 9 hours of straight music playing on one battery charge (if the battery is new). That is with minimal to no internet use, and with minimal phone use.
Normal use of my phone with a little bit of everything lasts about 12-24 hours.
If I use wifi, GPS, or watch videos - the battery drains pretty fast. Having any of those running constantly will drain the battery in 2-3 hours.
If I just have my phone on standby, the charge will last 3-4 days.
Like I said, this might vary a lot from person to person.
So you charge your mobile every day ?

I charge it about 2 - 3 times a week, and I seldom let it get below 40%. If I use it a lot one day, I might be left with 40%, but the problem is that I don't want to start the next day with only 40%, and that's why I end up charging it. If I have more than 50% left in the evening, then I don't charge it until the following evening.
It all depends on how much I use it and whether I feel I need to start with 100% the following day.
Thanks you for answers, last question how many hours you can watch video(s) (normal form memory card or from youtube - [wifi])

Videos and wifi drain your battery a lot.
Again - with videos it depends on how the video is encoded, how high the bitrate is etc... There are videos that the processor can play with little effort, and others that are higher quality and require more battery power.
But, on the average, I would say I can watch 2 hours of video (with a bitrate of 500kbps) from the SD card. If they are youtube videos, then probably longer, although it is hard to say how much wifi will drain the battery. I've never tried draining my battery by watching youtube videos. So, that is just a guess.
Thanks for help

You're welcome. Glad to help.
thats a question no one can answer. reason being the battier life on the device gives a talk time if 4 hours on a good batt maybe 3hours tops without no cellular calls or any type of communication i went 2 maybe 3 hrs before but i watched a movie first for an hour but there is no real answer to give spend the 30 or 40 bucks on a second batt like i did

N.A.B.T Not another battery thread

OK OK OK...
This isen't a battery thread that shows my battery lasting 10 days with me using it 1 second at a time with no bluetooth and wifi sharing frozen or whatever...
I really think the battery life is great... I'm convinced that the whiners are the ones that can't keep their hands of their phones, correct me if I'm wrong..
Anyway I ran the phone non-stop replaying a run on the first track of JetcarStunts for the first 2 hours then FPse running Street fighter EX2+ for the rest I also Checked e-mails and messages every now and then.. probly 10min worth.
Screen was on FULL Brightness, Push Email was on (2 accounts), with Pulse updates, Wifi ON, BlueTooth ON, GPS ON, Full reception in a 3G covered Area, Sound was half way cause it was driving me crazy at one stage, and I have it running @ 1.4ghz with no over and undervoltage, GPU is fixed @ 267 / 1000mV as you can see from my home page pic..
Anyway referring to the Battery usage pic... It was on and off for the first 10min before I decided to do my experiment, you'll also notice that the screen went off for a smidge a little later that's cause I forgot to touch the screen to keep it active (keep-awake was set to 10min) & it mentions Charging that's because I plugged it into my PC's USB out of habbit it was like 2 seconds before I realised.
You'll notice that the graph takes a dive during the later stages I think FPse was taxing the phone more then JetCarStunts... Having said that I can comfortably say that we can get at least 3h and 30min continuous usage out of our phones with everything MAXED out... Not bad for a duel core phone right? I also attached a Iphone4/3/3gs comparison pic.. but the testing was different
Quote: On the iPhone 4, I was able to browse the Web with streamed musical accompaniment for 50 minutes, make a 30 minute phone call and watch another 44 minutes of Shaft's Big Score before the new phone called it quits-4 hour and 32 minutes after testing began. And while the iPhone 4's 40 percent longer battery life was truly impressive, I worried that the year-old 3GS's battery had significantly less capacity than when purchased.
It doesen't mention if the streamed music was from wifi or 3G
P.s: I'm not sure if me interacting with the phone ie.. touching the screen and playing games takes up more battery life, If so can someone that aint married with 4 kids try the test out.. And I mean from start to Finish none of this I played (Insert game here) for 30 min and the battery went down 50%
Edit: Firmware version is KF2 with LULZ KERNAL BUILD 1
Nice results and impressive. I would be VERY interested to see the iPhone 4 tested again with identical usage pattern to what you did with the galaxy s2. My hunch is iPhone would last even longer at same usage.

Nexus 4 Battery Life questions.

I have a HTC Evo V(HTC evo 3d) that I use on Vigin Mobile. I'm trying to save $5 per month by maybe using an ATT based MNVO like H2o wireless since they have an $30 plan. Is the battery life that bad as people say? Would it be an substantial upgrade over the HTC evo 3d that I'm currently using? 1.5 hours of streaming video + maybe 30 minutes of listening to music then its like 100 -> 30% in like 8 hours and I have to put it on the charger.
Well, I'm heavier user as well and i usually just need to plug it to charge at night.
But I've seen poorer performances with the same use

Can't get over 3 hours of battery life on any rom/stock

I've seen threads of people being able to get 5 hours of screen time easily on 1 charge throughout the day. I can't come closer to that my phone struggles to get to 3 hours. I've tried everything but i think there is something wrong with my phone's physical hardware. I've even tried 3 different batteries. Two of them were original Samsung batteries purchased directly from the Samsung service centre near my house and the other was an anker 5200mah battery. I use 3g since i find LTE drains a little more battery. At work i listen to music and it drains about 30-40% over 6 hours. When I'm on the bus to school i also listen to music so that adds about 3 hours of music playback. I've tried different roms but the most i could get was 3 1/2 hours and that was when i capped the processor at 900mhz and undervolted. I replaced my Razr HD which was running stock and not rooted and i could get easily 4 hours of screen time and 3 hours of music playback time in 10 hours of uptime. I've also tried several different roms/kernel combinations and let them settle in for a few days before taking any battery life into account.
Also the only push app I use is the stock email app which syncs my outlook/gmail every hour.

Are those three large chunks of awake time from listening to music? If you're streaming music over 3G that would definitely be heavy on the battery, but even without streaming, I would say that's normal for a GS4 if you're listening to that much music. The GS4 is pretty inefficient when it comes to being awake, even if it's not doing anything (or playing music). Perhaps you could look into lowering the idle clock which is 384 MHz by default. I don't know much about underclocking and kernels since I'm on MF3, so I can't help you with that.

Yeah over 90% of my wakelocks are from music the rest is from random small things that have negligible impact or from data turned on. All my wakelocks are accounted for so i didn't posted better battery stats. All my music is stored on the external SD card with media scan set to scan on manual. My minimum clock speed is set to 189mhz at 775mv and im on ktoonservative. I always thought the S4 was more efficient at playing music. I guess i will try the phone out without any music playback.

Screen on time

It's amazing how much we actually use our phones in a given day, especially when we watch "videos"! Rate this thread to express how many hours of screen-on time you can get on the Huawei Mate 10 before depleting the battery.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
6 hours 20 min
Just got mine a couple of days ago and wanted to test the battery out.
I had 100% at 7.36am and then went out. I did some normal chrome browsing during that time. I also did the first big update. The translator one that was about 300meg. I downloaded around 500 songs to Spotify.
I got home around 4pm and this is where I really used it almost non stop until 8.34pm.
I watched some YouTube, a 45 min Netflix episode, a ton of web browsing, checking out all the phone settings, Facebook, and about 90 min of gaming (tower defence, top down 2D scrolling shooters).
I stopped at 8.34pm at 5% left. Phone has been on battery for around 13 hours.
Screen on time during the above time reported at 6 hours and 20 minutes.
I was pleased with that though doesn't hit much of the hype I've read lately.
Coming from a Nexus 6P, which my only complaint was battery life (3.5 your SOT on average) I'm happy and really my wish was to have a phone that I could use heavily all day without needing to recharge either at home or out with a power bank.
It's still early stages and I will keep monitoring.
I forgot to add this was at 1080p resolution.
Sad that Moto Z Play beat this 4000mah on my Mate 10, I did lyft for 8hrs no turning off screen non stop playing Spotify and YouTube red on the background and using lyft app and Google map on the Z play and after 8hrs I still have 15% left on 40%screen brightness. The mate 10 only last 6hrs and 10%left. So lesson is don't buy Z Play then buy another more expensive phone. Bought mine $703 on ebay and I am using AT&T and I get same speed as iPhone 7 plus with regards to data speeds. I have a S8 too which I sold because of screen burn in, but the Mate 10 is a beast. It beats my S8 speed with regard to experience using the phone. And IPS is really the way to go if you use the phone how I use it everyday 8-16hrs of screen on time.
So after a few days use and after a 100% charge I get this estimated use. Hmmmn

Yes.
So far I get an average of 6.5 - 7hrs of SOT with average of 18-22 hours battery. Is that good?

IMO, it's very good considering the screen size :good:
Did you try comparing SOT with QHD vs FHD resolutions? I understand that SOT won't really improve if you go for lower resolution..
All pixels on the screen are used regardless. Just a bigger sample size with FHD. However, QHD will use a little more battery if you are changing the image on the display. For the fact that it has to draw that many more pixels each time the image changes. Which is millions of pixels. But I believe a lot of static image changing is done by the cpu and not the gpu. where gpu is used mainly for constant motion on screen.
But honestly part of the reason they have such high resolution is for VR. That and to make more sense of taking UHD pics and videos. Most people won't notice a working difference between the two through regular use unless they keep it really close to their face, or have very good eye sight.
So you will see it use some extra battery. Not a detrimental amount more unless you are a heavy user of games and whatnot. Or if you force GPU rendering, then you should see a big difference in battery

but its still interesting to see the results. If its like 0.5-1h of SOT to a SOT result which on QHD is 6-7 hours, I would never go for lower resolution..

I didn't try the higher resolution yet as 1080 for me is absolutely fine looking to my eyes. I came from a nexus 6p which was poor on SOT which I attributed to partly to the resolution.
Still it will be worth to try it at some point to see the difference.
My worst result with battery was today. 4.5 screen time but I did the most gaming and had hours of messenger chats with a 40 minutes voice chat thrown in.
super battery
i want to share my mate 10 battery with app ( gsam batterry )
i used whatsapp , instagram , twiteer . youtube , snap chat , phone calls lte , the screen is wqhd 2560x1440 all the time , screen bright is manual on 50 % level brightness
this what i got 13h 49 mint
see attachment
SOT:
Now after 10 days, mine is usually around 5-7 hours, if I just surf internet, Youtube, using FB, IG, RSS reader and camera (usually without flash). I'm mostly on WiFi using also only 1 SIM at a time (the other switched off).
If using games, this drops to 4-5 hours max. Seems the GPU is burning through battery like butter, the phone is also getting somewhat warmer.

Also been noticing that the mate 10 performs bad in games, could be because the games are not optimized to kirin ?

This is what I got so far.
8hrs 50mins 23s
* Max resolution set - WQHD - disabled Smart resolution toggle
* Social media, surfing, on WIFI like permanently all throughout the day
* Minimal youtube, no gaming (since I'm at work)
* first couple of days I was able to get around 7hrs SoT average

You guys know this is a waste of time without giving which model as the Pro in theory should have a better SOT with lower res and OLED
Mate 10 with AT&T Sim and always on Wi-Fi. This is what I get. Most of the time is on Twitter, Chrome, 30 minutes on sling TV today.
Seriously??? [emoji23]?

Not bad at all, gps on, Bluetooth on for miband 2, mostly wlan connection. Definately more sot than my s7 edge
