i have uploaded some comparison on 8mp manual vs 20mp manual. Seems 20mp needs a real steady hands, 20mp seems turn out a bit blur then 8mp in ALL samples!! all samples taken are indicated (8) or (20). Enjoy, best viewed on your PC.

This is a great, and timely, demonstration of the argument I'm having over in the camera thread. Thank you.
Sony put their processing effort into the oversampling algorithm - that's where the time was spent and it shows. Clearly, they spent less time on the 20mp algorithm and I don't particularly mind.
A nice, clean, sharp 8mp image is just as good as a 20mp image for just about all purposes. It's the same people complaining about the 20mp image quality who otherwise like to crow about how "Megapixels don't matter". No, they don't. So stick your Z1 onto 4:3 8mp manual and stop griping.
(Nice pictures, by the way)
No special settings, just click manual 8mp(4:3) & ur ready to go!!

Can you post the links of original image resolutions, upload them somewhere and send the link having images with exact size they were clicked.
Just taken the same picture in 8MP 4:3 or whatever it is, with all auto setting, then same picture on 20MP 100ISO. The 20MP image obliterates the 8MP. It's an indoor image... but the 8 is really not good,.especially compared to the 20
Will post pic in half hour
Edit: just noticed on,the 8MP image I,had HDR on, without its same as 20MP unless you zoom
Anybody know why there's a purple ring around edge of the photo at night time outside?
Only in 8MP not 20MP
Updated with night shots, ALL IN 8MP. Manual HANDHELD TWILIGHT (H.T) vs Superior Auto (S.A) .......Superior Auto(S.A) vs Manual(M)
2 sets of LOSSLESS DIGITAL ZOOMED photos-(WOW! ITS AMAZING).SONY's Digital zoom is on par with optical ones!!! LOOK AT THE BANANAS!!! ENJOY!!!

Honestly I'm starting to think that the 16:9 vs 3:4 is a myth. I took different shots but I'm totally unable to see a real difference between 16:9 and 4:3 (other than the size).
I'm not to disappointed with the night shot capability with the camera as night shots are much better than 95% of Android cameras out there anyway.
There is a difference in VISUAL, not QUALITY between 16:9 vs 4:3 ..... 16:9 is just a zoomed in version of 4:3 , so pictures taken by 4:3 will look "sharper".
Go try it out and you will see the diff, especially during low lights. I personally only use 16:9 when i am using the picture taken as wallpaper on my pc.

Unless you like the trail effect of cars, there is no point using night scene in that kind of environment. Hand held twilight looks better.

Hi guys, i found this very interesting post in a forum about the camera on our Z1, i may say, this guy cover every single aspect of the amateur-professional aspects of Photography and how to use it on our cameras, the bad thing is that is in Chinesse but google translator help a lot here

Interesting photos! I knew that these options were going to make the photos better!
Gotta try them out all!
Thank you! proves that most complains come from nerds who believe that an awesome camera is the guaranty for good pictures. A messed up living room under low light condition doesn't look better with a professional SLR Camera. Why should a smartphone do the cleaning job? Nice view-found pictures.

I can translate the table, but it really is just listing what features there are for which mode.
like for the superior auto, you can only set flash light, max resolution is 8mp, aspect ratio is 16:9 etc
manual let you set everything except at 20mp, you can't set scenery setting

手動 - Manual
時光平移 - timeshift burst
圖片效果 - picture Effect
AR效果 - AR effect

(and I won't type out the chinese characters from here because I am really bad at it lol, from here on horizontally)
EV
Flash
Photo Pixel (not sure about this one, this is a direct translation, I am guessing it means that you can change the pixels in this mode if there is a tick)
Focus mode
ISO

Scenery mode selection

Outdoor pictures are wonderful but indoor pictures are not that good..
Was expecting more from SONY when I bought this phone :/...
Hi all
I've been using this device for long. I noticed that camera can not focus on close objects. It can only focus on objects up to a certain distance and for smaller distance it focuses on far object and the main subject is blurred while background becomes focussed ,which results into very bad macro shots ( same problem in both 'Superior Auto Mode' and 'Manual Mode' ) .
After many experiments,I've concluded that it can not focus on object that are in 7cm or less away from the camera but, for objects +8cm away it can focus correctly .
I hope to see an update to fix that problem as soon as possible .
some samples :
Model: E6653
Build Number: 32.0.A.6.200
You can download original samples from here :
https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B-066edkqJ2vLU0xTzhuQ0JtQ3c/view?usp=sharing
The pictures on the right side were taken from a smaller distance than pictures on left side .

Yep. Z5's minimum focusing distance is about 10cm. It's just a characteristic of the lens. Ultra wide-angle lenses are notoriously bad for macro photography. Z5 might well be the worst phone to take close-ups.
This has nothing to do with the software. This is a hardware based limitation. It is what it is. If you want your phone to take high quality close-ups, do not buy a Z5.
Use 16:9 aspect ratio. Camera software will downsample from 23MP.
Z5's minimum focus distance is 120 mm.I think z5 have a wide-angle lens,so......
Sorry for my bad English
Nothing real related to ultra wide 24mm angle. Sony is generally weak on focus close object, my older Z1c with 27mm lens isn't doing very well too whereas my S6 28mm lens done an excellent job.
Yes I think this is not because of the wide angle camera lens
because I have seen Xperia Z1 , Z2 , Z3 users talking about this problem here on xda and other forums .

Poor macro shot from Sony xperia z5
I am not a professional but I believe macro shots aren't taken by getting as closed to the subject as possible but by zooming in from a "regular" short distance

Yes that is how it is done but with such cameras you have mechanical optical zoom and the loss is minimal and the lenses and sensors are bigger and better to reducec noise factor. On mobiles you have to resort to digital zoom which is not lossless though Sony in 8MP SA or manual mode offers upto 3x/5x "lossless" zoom. It is really good and way better than taking the photo at 21MP/23MP and then cropping in on subject.

Good macro shot from my Z5c. Use "lossless" zoom in 8MP SA/manual mode. This photo was taken with 5x zoom holding the phone with one hand in the air. 1/64, ISO 64.
Here are 3 pictures taken from the same distance (10-15cm): 1X, 3X and 5X. Manual 8MP 16/9, 50 ISO. I think it's not bad in 3X.
Anyone know if the problem is fixed in the Xperia X?

Thanks! Just took a photo in Superior Auto in 8MP 16:9 mode with the zoom slider set to 5x. Natural lighting in the room of course affected it positively as it is always better than artificial light (more photons, more detail to capture).
the amount of misinformation in this forum is just unbelievable :/
I tried in bad light and good light. With HDR, with night settings, nothing changed. Only manual setting allow to choose second lens 20mpx and give better light.
How do I know ?
I made picture on auto mode in described situations. One photo with covered ultrapixel lens by my finger, and second without finger on lens. No differences. Photos looks the same. Maybe software is broken. Now second lens is not used...
Maybe in 6X work better?
Yes, it's the same here.
I saw that the app is not saving the original photo
Same here (both problems). I think we need a SW update for this to be fixed.
I also find it frustrating that I can't set the resolution of the photo.
Also, the front facing camera can do [email protected] using Open Camera, but the stock camera app doesn't allow it.
These things should be submitted via the feedback app, but I don't have a Xiaomi account and don't want to create one.
It's my first Xiaomi and I'm disappointed with the camera, It does not deliver what it promises
Obviously the 2nd camera (20mp) is being used! Nevermind the subject...just a quick shot, but if you look at the info the pic is 20.1 MP which is the secondary camera used for depth and low light. And this was taken in quite a dark room.

Do you remember which camera settings this shot was set to? I mean was it 'photo' and 'hht'? Or maybe the 'manual' with low light lens selected?
I guess we're still trying to figure out how this app is 'suppose' to work, as we don't know if it's doing as it should or not!
But for sure, there are some great capabilities here, I took this indoors (last night), after the sept update, very realistic colors and awesome details.
The 20mp sensor is used for depth and for low light only. Switch to portrait mode and it will use the 20mp sensor because it is measuring and capturing depth. In low light it uses it to measure the pixels then transforms 4 pixels into 1 for a cleaner image. It is then output as a 12mp image.
The pic I took was using portrait mode.
here's the reason.
This will only be available in the future. Maybe Android p?

So 20/4 is 12?

It is not 20/4, it is the pixel count and it's not a division.

How would you bin then? Each four pixels make up a huge new "pixel". Of course this is a division by four..
I had issue when trying to take photo in landscape orientation and in low light. I tried several times and every time photo was blurry. In portrait orientation (not mode) picture was just fine. My hand was not shaky. It was with august fw. Ill try tonight same scene with September update. Don't know if anyone else noticed this...

I'm not here for a math debate, I'm simply trying to explain how the cameras work...
"The 20MP module also has 4-to-1 pixel binning to reduce noise levels in low-light shots, with the camera essentially combining information from four pixels into one to create a more detailed image."

Yes but the resulting pixel count will be of course 5MP hence 4 to 1..

At least I know what I am talking about. What else should 4 to one mean in your opinion?

People like you ruin this community. At least I'm contributing something useful to the conversation in trying to explain the cameras and how they are used. And just so you know, I'm a photographer and downsampling isn't the same as your brilliant theory of 20/4. Have a nice day.

Stop being personal. A 4 to 1 pixel binning will result in a 5MP image when starting from 20. How this will be upsampled and combined with the 12MP sensor one is not what I am talking about and obviously is not happening anyway right now. So what's your point if your explanation is obviously wrong?
