Hi,
Any help most appreciated as I am struggling to solve this bizarre issue. Both my wife and I picked up Galaxy S4s in the last 30 days. Over time as you use the phone the dialer seems to slow down considerably. When you click the green phone icon to call a contact it will take upwards of 10-15 seconds to get to the caller screen and actually place the call. It's so slow that you would think the call was not even happening sometimes!
Now. The weird thing is that at first I thought it was a handset thing, but exactly the same thing happens on my wifes phone now! (I re installed and fixed mine twice now)
The dirty solution is to backup, factory reset and restore everything (logs, contacts etc.). This works fine, so I know that the issue it is not the size of the call logs, number of contacts etc.
I honestly don't think we are running any strange apps, pretty mainstream stuff.... Otherwise phone is awesome. Have scoured the net but not found specific threads on this issue with the S4.
I have tried disabling all syncing to extendable address books ( face book. Linkedin , etc)
Thanks in advance for your thoughts and or comments.
Jamie

Unfortunately the S4 will clean the phone and contacts app from background and foreground (cache) ram when the system needs extra ram for another app like facebook or netflix.
When this happens the phone and contacts apps need to be reloaded from scratch.... which takes a little longer than if they were not removed from memory in the first place.
These first versions of the samsung s4 software needs some polish to reduce its ram demands. It is a bit bloated at the moment.
Imo... it will significantly improve next few updates.

I agree its early days with the s4 and im having problems with the qwerty keyboard and the predictive text not keeping up and the purple haze issue on the settings screen, its just a case of waiting for the updates to arrive ive heard its been released in germany and Malaysia.

Do I need to report this type of thing to Samsung direct? Or just patiently await the updates?

So this is supposed to be normal? How come more people are not complaining about it.? It is ridiculously slow, after pressing the send button you shouldn't have to wait a few seconds to even see the dialer let alone wait for it to initiate a call. I would like to know how many people are experiencing the same thing. I've owned a galaxy nexus, galaxy s3, Samsung focus, galaxy s4 and galaxy note 2 amongst numerous other non Samsung phones and it's really annoying. I own a ROGERS s4, wonder if it's a specific model issue.
This is ridiculus! This issue has progressively gotten worse over time, and it has come to the point where it takes about 20 seconds from the time I press the phone number until it actually makes the call. Phone is unresponsive in the meantime. Shame on Samsung...
It's completely normal with sangsuga phones ....I've got Samsung from gs1 nexus, note and now s4 and s4 active. .... my opinion is....I just don't care. If you clean dalvik cache it will work better you need to do this sometimes unfortunately
But hey guess what.....Samsung knows that and finally and maybe they will give us a fresh ui based in ART

Is there any mod/hack to put the damn dialer in Memory so that it don't delay when phone icon pressed ? I searched on Google and all galaxy phone from first to the recent have all this stupid lag/delay and It is crazy that the main core function of a so powerful phone is till not fixed after so many years :S
First off, the phone I was using before I got the Note 3 was the original AT&T Galaxy Note, so my expectations for the Note 3 were pretty high. When I used the Google Nav app on the OG Note, I really liked how reliable it was and the many options it had like picking routes without tolls for example (my favorite :good. The only gripes I had about the OG Note was that occasionally, it would take over a minute or two to get a GPS signal. But once it did, it worked like a champ!
So now we move on to the Note 3.
The first thing I noticed was that there was no dedicated app for Google Navigation. I looked on the Google Play store and I didn't find it there either. So when I checked Google Map app, I saw that that was the only way I could access the navigation feature. Personally, I'm not a fan of Google deciding to merge to two apps together, but I guess in the long run, it'll make sense over time.
Now, another issue I noticed when I first used the navigation feature was the HUGE lack of options navigation is missing. Like I said previously, the OG Note had a lot of features and options that let you tweak how you wanted to set your routes. But the Note 3's navigation 'options' are almost bare-bones! On the settings tab on the lower left hand side, the options you have are things like Google location settings, distance units, and maps history; So I'm like "what the hell?!" So then, when I set my route, I try to see if the options are imbedded in the GPS map screen when you start to use the GPS nav, but.... there's only 4 options (route preview, step-by-step list, mute voice guidance, and satellite view :crying. What the hell happened to the other options?! Is there some way to get to the other options that I'm not aware of? I really hope so.
Now, as I start to drive to the destination I had set for my route, I notice even MORE issues. First thing I notice to my dismay is that the GPS voice sounds... off (and that's putting it nicely). It just sounds muffled and to me, it seems like the voice doesn't finish the end of the words properly - kind of off putting, IMO. Also, I noticed that when I stopped my vehicle, the little blue triangle that indicates your position on the map tends to move slightly more forward before it completely stops movement. Also, I saw that while at a complete stop, the map starts to go in circles, leading one to believe that the routes changed on the fly (I can see this as a problem if one were to look away from the screen for a bit, and then once you move, the map fixes it's direction again, and that could lead to some confusion while you're trying to momentarily figure out what happened).
So there you have it. That's my experience with the Note 3's newer version of Google Maps. Perhaps It's my phone that's having issues with it's GPS functions. So I'd like to know from others here if they're having similar issues with their navigation.
thats actually google's doing, you'll find that on all new versions of the os
Indeed, like tom said above, this is google's updated version of maps that happened months ago. Consider yourself lucky that you never updated it on your older Note. There's been many complaints about them stripping out features that were once in the older version of maps. In my note 2, I at least had an option to uninstall the update after I tried it out but since our Note 3 came with the newer version preinstalled, there is no older version to revert back to.
Once I feel comfortable with our root options, i'll sideload the old apk back in.
The one thing that is Samsung's issue that you mentioned was the voice. For some reason or another, Samsung stripped out Google's default TTS engine. I really have no idea what the reasoning behind this is, but.. there you have it. You're stuck with Samsung's TTS engine or some other third party one in the market.
Got spoiled with Note 1 and 2. Exchanged my Note 3 after comparing GPS with Tmo and AT&T showroom displays. Replacement is better but not spot on accurate as 1&2.
New one has sloppy home button tho

I used the GPS 3 times today on the Note 3 and had no issues. I actually like the new Google Maps, it seems like more accurate than before.
It has nothing to do with the note. Update your old phones apps and SURPRISEEEE!!! You have the new app. I highly doubt your arrow is spinning if it is restart your phone. Your compass needs to calibrate, move your phone in a figure 8 pattern. You're nitpicking and have no reason to blame the note. HTC Motorola and everyone else has your same "problems". Get over it. You want another route option right after you enter your destination the options are right there. You're not accepting of change. Yea the maps app is new just live with it.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-N900A using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
yeah. i like the old google map better, it also ask you what navigation app you want to you. so you can use your favorite navigation app.
i tried the new google map, it' useable, it' not that bad.
if you want to use your favorite navigation app, just install a older version of google map and dont update it.

my note 3 is having an issue also - the arrow to indicate the position you are traveling is pointed about 15 degrees clockwise... i am going to keep checking and hopefully it gets better.
First thing, the "two apps" were always the same. There were just two launchers. And if you want the old launcher back, the intent is still there. Just create it. Super simple if you're using Nova, just create shortcut->all->maps->navigator.
And yes, going through the "Maps" application is a lot more taps, it's actually pretty silly. They've made it a little better in the most recent version but it's still 3-4 taps, and I've heard navigating to Contacts is worse too but I haven't done that recently.
Google Now still works I guess, as long as it recognizes the destination
You can down grade your maps to the old version. Go in the App info and uninstall update

I am having the same exact issue, as well as I am 30+ ft from my current location. I have also tried numerous calibration softwares that have worked on other phones, with no avail. Time for me to stop by AT&T since its still in the 14 day exchange period.

Hi Guys,
I had the same problem with my phone as well. Found an upgrade to 7.3 and it seems to have fixed the 30 degree offset problem. I tried Waze buy prefer Google maps. 7.3 is available.
Not sure where I found it but I do have the apk file. Would be glad to send it anyone who wants it.
Update: The 30 degree problem has returned. I have tried several GPS programs and all of them that give heading information eventually show the offset of the heading. Phone will be exchanged today as I can't determine if it is hardware or software. Also, the compass continues to be off as well when it receives GPS info.

Tenbender
I really enjoy how my Note 3 navigates. I'm from Omaha and have been using it to get around Kansas City (which I'm really not familiar with) all weekend. The only thing I wish it had is a history so I wouldn't have to keep lookng up my hotel every time I want to return there. Other than that, it's been working flawlessly.

People, if your device lags in hangouts, while scrolling through menus, or just seems slow go get it swapped. Its not all touchwiz by any means. You have a defective device.
I just swapped mine out tonight and its literally night and day comparing the new one and the one I returned. The device is far more responsive and actually performs as I was originally expecting it to. And believe me I tried everything but then I thought to myself why on earth should I have to fix a brand new top of the line device? It was ridiculous. Unnaceptable actually.
I went back to my Verizon corporate store and they had zero issues with me swapping it out and there were no restocking fees or anything like that.
I know this has been covered in other threads but most of those have been filled with random side posts that aren't getting to the real point. So please, do yourself a favor and go get a replacement note 4 before your 14 days are up!

+1 I agreed with you 100%.
Hmm.. weird. I m getting nasty lag in hangouts and a little hank in other places.. I went to try to exchange right now and every store is out.... I did update hangouts on 4 store phones and they all had the same lag when scrolling and sending messages.
I guess I could call customer service but I bet their sold out. Not convinced so many people have a bad device though. . Wonder if it's some software issue..
hangouts lag is not enough to warrant a replacement though. hangouts has lagged since day 1 for me on every device I've owned except a pure aosp rom or device. it's just how hangouts is. it's poorly optimized for each manufacturers skin. Samsung was typically the worst. then LG. then htc. but yeah, hangouts has been laggy since I had the gs4. my tab s is laggy too. it's a combination for me of swiftkey and hangouts. swiftkey lags awfully in hangouts, but in other apps it's ok.

It was all bad. I don't know if I can relate it to any apps specifically as it seemed like something inherently wrong with the device's software that was loaded. Every app opened slowly. Switching tasks was glitchy and every menu scrolled choppy. It was terrible.

To counter that, the hangouts lag significantly decreased upon swapping devices. You are correct that there was always some lag in hangouts but on the old note 4 I would open the app and watch the spinning circle for up to 3 or 4 seconds at some points. It also put my keyboard to almost a hault. And the messages glitched every time one was sent. I get none of that now which is so relieving. So in my case it was warranted bc all my issues were solved.

It was kind of hard to describe. Honestly it just seemed slow. Didn't react to what I was doing hardly ever. There was always a delay that you could see was not touchwiz related. I had a note 3 that was stock at one point and rooted at another and both those devices were beating my brand new note 4. This for me was enough to at least go back and try a second one.

I think when we are talking about lags, we're talking about everything, not just one specific app. The entire phone is lags, like in settings, home screen, launching apps etc...
Mine only lags when I'm downloading apps while doing other things. If that's considered as a defective device then I can still return it, hoping to get a white one.

Hey...mine doesnt have any serious lag, as some are mentioming, but it is choppy as hell when scrolling through FB, Instagram, Messenger, Hangouts, etc etc...and web pages are slow loading, even on wifi...i mean, i hated my G3 due to lag, but in these mentioned instanced, it beat the crap out of this. I hate to think i might have made a mistake trading off of the G3
Those with lag issues have you disabled all the bloatware? This was huge for me as soon as I did the device ran smooth. Switched animations to .5 and now we are rocking with no hiccups except I can't update Shealth without it FC launching.
While I think it makes sense, part of "knows" is doesn't make sense. I don't know how a device would be defective and only lags on hangouts. Hangouts lags on my Galaxy S5, Note 4 and G3. Lags on my Tab S 8.4... it doesn't lag on my Original Moto X. I'd love to get my device swapped specially if it is defective but I don't see how it could be the case.
Also, when I first got my phone, hangouts wasn't lagging. I deleted my conversations and it wasn't lagging up until I had a decent amount of messages again...
Installed an older version of hangouts and doesn't lag. I mean, how can this be the phone and not the message?
I think lag on 1 app could be more related to the app itself and not hardware issue. Maybe hangouts isn't optimized to our screen resolution yet...

I was wondering this as well if it was more an issue on the app side rather than the hardware/OS. I have a couple apps/games which just seem to lag horribly but others are stupid fast.
Is there anyway to narrow down defective or just a laggy app?
I only see small lag in hangouts when i search for someone because it looks up also their hangouts chat that is all every other app works fine.
So im good ?

That sucks. Thanks! It's annoying I had to turn it off because it would randomly freeze and kick me back to the lockscreen after a few seconds of being frozen. facebook not working
After this update I have the same error that lte icon is not revolving, I believe it isn't connecting to the Spark network.
The other big problem is that my facebook app (official) was crashing, so I uninstalled it and when I try to install via Google Play it doesn't install giving me the -500 error.
I looked in the logcat and it has to do with the some permissions. This was an android bug in 5.0.1 but google fixed it, but with this OTA it has crept up again.
Would it be possible for someone to upload a flashable zip?
Update does fix the fingerprint bug. Working flawlessly since putting it back. Overall phone feels snappier like the day I first bought it. Also like that they got rid of the dreaded spinning spark icon plus signal on band 41 no longer displays just one bar and instead is showing 4-6 bars while inside home! Battery life also took some improvements from this ota.

I like that the retarded star is gone and actually the way lte is being measured is better on band 41 then when we had the old icon. Before it would just sit at 1 bar but now I'm almost maxed out. Same problem here since op7pro, Chrome and Brave (based in chromium) I have to lock or go main screen or make gesture to go main screen and cancel, I have not tried another browser. Did you tried another?
Yeah I have freezes
Chrome is always a laggy mess as an app
Hate it.
Only use it because the bookmarks links to my pc
This seems to be a software issue with the Oneplus 8 Pro. Don't have any of these issues on my Samsung Galaxy S20 Plus 5G.
Have the issue on my S20 exynos and on my OP8Pro. Don't have it on older Phones tho
I just see the same problem inside a news on Google feed on OP8pro. I can't remember if the same problem is in others app, but I don't think so.
Only way I quickly resolve it is tapping screen 3 times to turn on the magnification, it releases the freezes every time, just fyi. This phone shouldn't be doing this.. adding that too not to good battery (who wants to opt out 5g or 120hz for a feature we payed for) making me considering RMA
I had this issue on my Xiaomi mi 8 after upgrade to android 10 so I think it's android 10 bug. The best method to unfreeze the app on Oneplus 8 pro is tap once the notification bar.
Did it on my old pixel XL as well
I had the same on my OP6 previously after upgrading to Android 10. At the same time I wasn't able to allow/block the website from using my location as the popup wasn't not responsive. With the OP8Pro it's basically there same with them difference that it can recover without killing the browser app (not only Chrome but any app using in-app browsing with Chrome).
Not a fix for Chrome but I use Samsung internet. Pure dark mode and works perfect. Doesn't burn the battery down either.
I also have the screen freezes, hitchiness, and nav gestures not working (I only use Brave). Coming from the OP7P. Never had those issues on that phone, running the same version of Android.
This is my 5th or 6th OP phone. I can't believe how many issues there are. I started a thread on the radio issues alone.
This issue is not specific to this phone but is a common issue faced by many smartphones since Android 10 update.

Samsung internet browser only runs at 60 fpS that's why it is working better.

I'm forcing 120 on it and it still works a heck of a lot better.

I've contacted Samsung and they confirmed that the Oneplus 8 Pro is not supporting the Samsung internet browser. It's only showing 120 fps in the menu's not when it is showing content.

Anyone else having a screen freeze issue when using the chrome app? Just goes fully unresponsive and the only fix is me relocking the phone. It's not an edge touch issue too.

I have this on the regular OnePlus 8 and also had it on the OnePlus 7t. I believe Google pixel 4 devices are having this issue as well. Since it's over a few different devices, id have to assume this is something app side that would need to be fixed.
I have been using the browser Bromite over the past 2 weeks and have not experienced the issue at all.
