[SOLVED] Region lock? Custom ROM? - Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi Guys,
i'm thinking of buying the 4g NOTE 3 but as a constant traveller I'm concerned with this region lock thing. Do custom ROMs remove this issue?

No. Customs roms are OS images. All frequencies and networks locking is done in baseband/radio firmware.

Just put in a local sim FIRST (if it's sim-free and bought from the UK, then any UK sim). Once the phone registers with that local sim, the region lock is automatically removed and you can then use it with any sim in the world.

That's the problem. That's what Samsung say to do but the big issue that's NOT how it's working for everyone. Go check up the massive thread on it.
Besides which, the issue appears to have been resolved for the moment by Chainfire. I'll mark the thread solved.

It worked fine for me, and so for a lot of people too. My advice would be:
Put in a local sim. Leave it on for a couple of minutes so it catches maximum signal, then make a local call so it registers it properly, and that should be it! Bob's your uncle!

As a heavy international traveller I was NOT prepared to spend £5/600 on a phone which would maybe work as I needed it. Until Chainfire fixed it this morning, it was very hit or miss.
Plenty of evidence

If you wish to remain under the dilusion that it worked for everyone following Samsungs method, then please carry on .... but it doesn't. It works for SOME people and doesn't work for others - until Chainfire implemented a software fix this morning.
So, as far as I'm concerned, threads dead and can be closed.

Well since its a general thread for all kinds of Note 3's (including my wifes SM-N 900) you should reconsider doing this because Chainfire did not confirm its working in all Note 3 models... And believe me its not..

Some custom roms have the region lock deactivated. .. so if you flag them you won't need to do anything else. ...

[Q] Got my GNote, now what?

Perhaps we should create a sticky regarding typical first steps most users might want to take?
Such as APN settiings, rooting, what NOT to do, etc?
My Gnote is comnig in the am. what are the first few things new GNote owners want to do? Maybe we could create a list, and if so, would it be the same as the SGS2?
Thanks,
Jason

I imagine it would be the same.
Only thing I can imagine different is,
If you are a lefty, you probably want to switch the stylus setting to left handed.

I am, and it runs on t-mobile just fine. on EDGE.
I just made another crazy long post regarding my attempt to turn on the 1700 band.
Short version - it didn't work, and it also stopped reading my sim card as well until I did a factory reset on my phone.

Man, that sucks. I've been waiting for this phone to come out for a while. Was hoping for it to work on tmobile. Hopefully samsung will come out with a version that can support tmobile 4g.
I've seen nothing to suggest they will release to the US market at all, and several things which say they won't. I wouldn't hold my breath on this one.

Loosing Mobile Network Connectivity during phone calls

Hello everyone! I have a simple but quite annoying issue with my Defy, and I'd really apreciate your help to find some kind of solution or enlightenment =)
Every time I make a phonecall or recieve one, i loose all data conectivity. I don't know whether this happens because of weak carrier reception, thus the phone being unable to boost it's signal strength because of using it as a phone (just guessing here btw). Or because I am running Quarx's CM9 and this belongs in the bugreport thread (in which I am unable to post this and other problems I've been having ).
This is my first smartphone (and a damn good one!) so I don't know if this happens to every Defy owner, everyone or whoever.
I'd really appreciate any piece of wisdom you can share. Thanks in advance
It's normal. Can't do a thing about it. You only have one antenna ;-)

My phone is dead-stock and I absolutely have never experienced this issue. Had the phone since Nov. 2010.
Seems that that is only true on 3g with a full bar. On less it switches to 2g so you won't get an interrupted call. I saw it today and I had good reseption. Try setting it to 3g(WCDMA) only and see it you still got it.
It is carrier related imho. My current carrier doesn't have simultaneous data+voice, but my previous carrier did. It is even explicitly mentioned somewhere in the website of my current carrier that data disconnects when calling. However this wasn't the case in my previous carrier, downloads etc would continue while I talked. So go ahead and blame your carrier

I'll try and set it to 3G only mode and see what happens, then report back. I also will be switching carriers as soon as they let me take my phone number with me (sometime around april) and see if there's a difference.

Att - Locked Bootloader?

I didn't know if any of the ATT PREORDERED NOTE 3's were out yet or not - but am curioius to find out if ATT is going to lock the bootloader for this phone like they did for the S4?
I think it is inevitable, but I was hoping that maybe they wouldn't be
If this is in the wrong forum for this, let me mknow or have the moderator delete this - I looked and couldn't find any other threads for the NOTE 3.
Anyone?
PS - if the bootler is locked for the ATT Varient - I was thinking of buying an unlocked phone - any difference between the N9000 and N9005?
99% its going to be locked. Makes me want to wait for Nexus 5. To much of a headache for Samsung.

I loved my NOTE 2 - got the S4 for the processor and camera - and want the Note 3 for the same reasons. The LOCKED BOOTLOADER thing is a bunch of crap - and it was a sad day when ATT started doing it. I doubt they will ever change policy, but I sure wish they would. It's one thing to lock a contract phone..I think I can understand their reasons for wanting to do that - but if I OWN the device - what business do they have preventing me from using it fully? arghh....oh well, fingers crossed we are both wrong - but I think your assessment was correct.
It's already been confirmed as locked by designgears. Great developer btw. Do a search. Also, look at the dev section cwm thread. Notice which models are missing? Att and Verizon.

T-mobile note 3 working on AT&T as in LTE as well? 3g should work without any issue I would think.
If so it would make perfect sense to purchase a t-mobile n3 outright just for the unlocked bootloader.
Yes, LTE as well. Full compatability. Along with a few extra bands. Just need to confirm this week with a real device.
There is a bigger thread on here discussing this. Check the Q&A forum.

Now for some shipping confirmation!!!!! I'm right with you!!!! Come on Negri!!!
rooted, recovered, and rebooted from the ol' i777.......
So what does the future look like for the N900A? Does the locked bootloader mean the only way to obtain root access will be through an exploit someone may eventually stumble upon? Will it most likely never be flashable, or is anything a possibility at this point? I have one on preorder and it's feeling like more of a downgrade all the time...

It's basically the same situation as the AT&T S4 with the newest knox firmware. Most likely an exploit found on that will also work on the AT&T note 3. I don't think anything is 100% secure but it may be a long time till one is found. I don't know if safestrap can be adapted or not. As far as flashing roms it depends on how much the phone is locked down but in the past if it was using a signed kernel then a custom rom could be flashed as long as it kept the stock kernel. You can be sure though that some very talented people are working on it. It's just a waiting game at this point.

Thanks, that gives me a bit of hope... Most people thought the PS3 would never get owned, and it obviously was As it is I'm basically buying an expensive bike with training wheels rigged to blow the tires if removed and a titanium boot permanently affixed that the most powerful blowtorch available cannot cut through.

Time to dump it?

Well guys, here I am with major thoughts of dumping my Note 3 and ending my short couple of month love affair with it.
I just feel that this device underachieved for me. My major beef with it is the poor wifi and overall network performance of the phone with no fix in sight. I can't stand the instability of the wifi performance. I also hate the speaker on this thing.
I also am disappointed with the community. I don't know what it is, but this community doesn't seem very active or have big numbers. I understand maybe a lot of people shy away because of the locked bootloader and such, but it just seems like low activity here.
With that being said, not all hope is lost. I still like this phone overall. I got in on the Cyber Monday deal for a $350 Moto X. I am making my decision easy for myself. If I like the Moto X, I am keeping it and dumping my Note 3. If I don't, I will keep my Note 3 for a little while longer.
And I understand that these phones are on opposite sides of the spectrum. But something intrigues me about the Moto X.
Ultimately I know that nobody probably cares. And that's cool, you can simply ignore this thread. But for anyone else, I would like to hear your thoughts.
Thanks!

I wouldn't put up with that, either. But my N3's WiFi and 4G connections have been excellent. Have you tried exchanging your phone?
I'd love to dump mine also .. having all the same issues in regards to the WiFi and network connectivity. Problem I have, I rooted mine and now I get that B/S "Custom" boot .. I've read through everything up here in regards to getting rid of that boot screen and so far NOTHING has worked. So right now, unless I find a way to hard brick my phone, I'm stuck with this damn thing.

What ROM are you using? My T-Mobile note 3 using att has excellent 4g LTE coverage but when I had T-Mobile coverage at first it sucked! I'm talking bad!! Barely any data connection if any and dropped a lot of calls. As far as WiFi I get excellent coverage also. Don't give up on your note 3 just yet. Just give up on t mobile!! If you use Chainfire's region unlock app from play store and switch to an att carrier, (like net 10 or Straight talk $45 a month) you'll be good to go.

Why not just sell it and get something else? The Note 3 is still going for decent money on Swappa and most people prefer to buy rooted phones on there.

Some users on their forum also says that. ATT got it 2 days before and we are getting it to.
I hope they move dual window back to back button. Thats all i need.

Pretty sure its true, but ATT's was only like 25mb
What I don't understand as an EU G4 user.
Why does T-mobile provide an update? Is it an update on their software? Or is LG involved?
Are there specific T-mobile apps on it?
I got the update this morning. To answer a couple of questions: No, no new apps. Dual window is still in the same place.
I dont notice anything right offhand different, but I havent done much with my phone yet this morning. Heres a capture of my info:

T-Mobile (as well as most carriers) ship out the updates after they've approved the changes. I would imagine this is to ensure that nothing being updated will affected their carrier's included Spam (I mean added software) or network connectivity. Last thing they want is their stores or customer service lines inundated with "help! The update broke my cellular connection!" claims.

If you do notice anything of real substance, please post it so that we can know. For now, I think I will avoid connecting to WiFi until I know what this update actually does. I've never been a fan of generic changelogs...
But then it's a little bit strange that the international version. Hasn't got the update.
So you could assume it has to do with their spam apps.
Maybe it fixes the touchscreen issue. I haven't gotten an update yet, and I've switched back to my S5 for now.

Could have to do with any number of kernel/lib/framework related items specific to carrier. Could be cellular radio related, WiFi related (wifi calling has been weird on my phone...doesn't want to seem to connect but I have awesome reception where I live, so I don't need it), etc...
Has your version had any updates in last week or two? If so, it might just be that the carriers are just now approving that update and pushing out to the devices.

That is true for certain phones. Like the Sony phones.
Sweet. Pretty quick imo. Look forward to seeing if it fixes some small issues I've been having (touch/tap misses and knock settings). I know knock settings are a longshot, but it would be nice to be able to configure them to each persons liking. I'd love to be able to turn off the "drag one finger down to quick view the clock/status"
I got my update overnight.
Phone updated without any warning or notice when I woke up this morning. CHecked the software version and it was the new one.
I havent noticed any differences as of yet.
Actually I just looked at my phone and already running version h I wonder if from the factory there were two different images

No I haven't got any updates on my version (H815).
Got the update and my phone starting shaking and jumping around on my desk. When the update was complete it turned into a Galaxy S6
Since they are already working on root and unlock I wouldn't take the ota just yet. Ive got a replacement on the way so once I get the update I'll take it on the one I'm returning and see if any changes. Ill also do a system dump on the new version too if necessary.
