Read. Start in the General section, you'll find the root topic and a discussion topic with a link to SafeStrap and what it is if you want ROMs. Make sure to read through the SafeStrap stuff too, as it's not a typical recovery.

I was looking at using this tutorial to root my phone: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2314494
I went into my about phone, and saw in baseband version, i337ucuamf3 for the baseband version. mf3 is also in the build number. does this mean that I should not follow this tutorial then?
edit: If so, should I follow this tutorial?: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2387577
Look at the second post in the guide. It links you to how to root if you have mf3. Read the whole first two posts as there's good info there.
Edit, yes

If you're not sure if you want to root it and why, I'd wait. If you mess something up there is not an odin flashable firmware that can recover your phone with.
To clarify, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2387577 will work just fine for your device. I did this with a new S4 that came with that version stock.

i was reading through the thread, and found the only real advantage to doing this right now is just to be able to freeze bloatware. there is no way to install custom roms yet then?

Not yet, but I think that there will be a way shortly after Kies releases the MF3 update. I'm not a developer but historically the developers are smart enough they always find a way.
Hello everyone
I am looking to root and install a custom ROM on my AT&T S4 SGH-i337 (MF3) phone. The whole process is confusing... I see one video saying this and another saying that. I finally found a site to root my phone but the loki recovery step says "loki aboot version does not match device" while using Terminal emulator. I wanted to install the FOXHOUND ROM or something similar. I just wish someone had ONE place to get the correct information for your specific phone.
The link below is where I found out how to root my S4.

This is where I downloaded my loki recovery

Thank you so much for ANY information you can provide!

If your phone came with MF3 already then I'm afraid you can't flash Custom Roms yet since the bootloader is locked my friend.

I would highly recommend you stop everything you're doing and put some time into reading up about MF3. You are likely to bork your phone if you continue. Cheers

As the others mentioned, you should read up more on MF3, and stop trying to do anything to it. MF3 is the firmware version AT&T pushed out after the Loki exploit was released, and with it they patched the exploit.
From this point, you have a couple options:
1. Root using this method, and then use Xposed mods to customize your stock rom.
2. Follow this thread closely, and wait for Hashcode to release a working version.
Oh, and get your information only from this site. Don't go to galaxys4root.

Thank you... My phone is already rooted so what should I do? Should I just leave it as is and wait for a fix for the recovery?

For now there's nothing you can do till someone unlocks the bootloader you can use the MOD WanamXposed.1.4.2 look it up in playstore make sure if you use it to install
first XposedInstaller_2.1.4 then WanamXposed.1.4.2 that's if your wanting to custimize the stock rom a bit, Read the instructions in playstore for WanamXposed.1.4.2

From what I see is you have 2 options.
Option 1: Keep your phone rooted and don't mess anything up. So you have to be very careful while rooted and not mess with the system files.
Option 2: Check this thread out as someone was able to reflash their galaxy s4 on mf3 at Best Buy' Samsung Kiosk:

Slightly offtopic but I notice Hascode is working on Verizon's S4. How will Hascode's version be compatible with AT&T? Is it mainly because both verizon & at&t have a similar locked bootloader?

At this point, there's no harm in installing the Xposed Framework, and using Wanam Xposed. There are a lot of cool tweaks in there, and the only requirement is root, which you already have.

In Hashcode's OP, he says that he is developing SafeStrap for "the locked versions of the Samsung Galaxy S4." I assume that means both Verizon and AT&T.
Pick up a s4 today that is on mf3. But i dont think it came shipped with mf3. I duno if this has been asked but can i downgrade it sense it wasnt shipped with mf3?
I was lucky enough to catch the MF3 update way back when and rooted to stop it, but I'm just now getting around to putting a rom and recovery on it. There's understandably a lack of posts about any recovery other than the Safestrap, and TWRP won't download from Goo Manager (looks like download is missing) From what I understand, safestrap isn't ideal for unlocked S4's.
So my question is, what version of TWRP should I be using, and does anyone have a link to it?

So you are on MDL? There are many posts about custom recoveries for S4s with MDL. The sticky "pinned" threads in the General section list them. If you are on MF3, safestrap is your only current option.

Man, I'm sorry. I don't know why, but I thought to check everything but the general section. I was searching for posts but since they were all from august I wasn't sure.
Thanks.
As the title says, can someone kindly point me to the thread for rooting this phone (att) and keeping stock.
Thanks

In this very subforum.. Did you even look?

i did a quick search and didnt dig too much. My apologies and thank you.
in the root thread, I didnt read any mention of adding recovery. Does it do that? Or is that a separate install?

TWRP's page has information. Admittedly, I did dig around for a day before I got my G2 to put stuff together to root it, so, there's no one-stop-shop for it all.
Just follow the instructions. After you root, you use the command on the page. Get the latest .img file, do not attempt to get the latest file, which is a zip, and unzip it or something. And of course, get the recovery for your phone.
And type carefully.

my phone keeps telling me that there is an update from att for the phone of 55mb or so. I've tried to download it several times, but it times out apparently after 10% or so.
Do I do that update BEFORE I root? Or can I do it after? I am currently on JB 4.2.2 build JDQ39B
EDIT - I found my answer in another thread. OTA after root = problems. I will retry the update and then root. Is there a way way push the update from the pc somehow?

agreed. How do I do that if I dont have recovery installed?
unfortunately need a custom recovery for that ... i'd recommend TWRP
Hi XDA society and devs.
So I've moved to an S4 and I've already rooted it.
Sadly, KNOX figured it out so I'm at 0x1, however, this isn't an issue, I believe KNOX is only important for warranty purposes?
But anyway, I have rooted and installed custom recovery but what I want to ask is how will I go about installing this specific rom on my I9505?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2283194
I'm really confused as to what I'm supposed to do, my BUILD number ends in FNB8 and this rom requires NGE8, so is it safe for me to install it without that number?
Do I need to do anything extra to install this rom or can I just move it directly to my storage and install it?
On WanamLites website, it says that the modem and the bootloader for NGE8 is optional?
So does that mean, I don't need to do any ODIN flashes before and after installing this rom?
MY main question is, I have a I9505, rooted and TWRP, can I install this rom straight away?
I appreciate any help, I'm fairly new to this phone and I have done a bit of research but I'm still a little confused.
Thanks to anyone that can provide me with an explanation and perhaps a brief guide. <3
Long Live, XDA.
It does not matter what version you have on your phone (eg FNB8/NGE8), so you can ignore that completely.
The bootloader and modem are for people that still have the old bootloader installed. You don't have that because you have KNOX. So you can also ignore that part.
Just flash away. The instructions are in the first post of that thread.

Your welcome.
I read that Wanam just updated the rom, but some people claim that it still has some bugs. Use the 2.6 version instead of the 2.7 untill everything is sorted out.
