I have the octa version and I find the speaker really good, better then my s4 sounded....not sure if people expect to get htc one sound quality out of it or the speaker in the s800 is different then the one in the octa but my speaker sounds perfectly fine.

Because people expect to get a complete 7.1 cinema surround sound quality from a flat plastic box, and then whine when logic and reality catches up with them.
To expect high quality audio from a tiny plastic speaker is idiotic to begin with.
I have the note 2 and I ordered the note 3, I would just like it to be on par with the note 2 or better if not no big deal it's just convenient that the note 2 speaker is as loud as it is, because I'm a lift operator and can't wear head phones so I just play audio through the speaker and for me the audio output on the note 2 is by far the best I had on a smart phone too date, and I'm rational I know a smart phone speaker can't replace a home entertainment system
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I317 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
I tested both for the speaker.
The sound level of both is pretty close (20:21) with hand off the speaker.
However Note 3 may be louder when laying flat because the speaker is not blocked like Note 2 does.

There are many things I don't like about my One, but the boomsound speakers are money. I don't care about sound quality, I just need the speakers to be loud enough to hear YouTube videos almost anywhere. Hopefully the note 3 will suit me

uh no...there are lots of other "flat plastic box"es that have better speaker quality, which you'll note is mentioned in a lot of tech reviews. In fact the biggest issue is lots of mentions that the Note 2 speaker sounded much better. This is the first time Samsung has moved the speaker from the back to the bottom so perhaps they haven't figured out how to get it to project correctly that way yet.

Does it REALLY need to be the loudest speaker ever on a phone?
No, I don't think so, it would be similar to me being disappointed that my 1.5 DCi is not the fastest car on the road.....
Just ask yourself if it does what YOU need it to do, and ask yourself does it NEED to be louder or would you LIKE it to be louder.
Just my 2p worth.

The point is, it appears the Note 3 speaker is inferior to the Note 2, and the loudness chart supports that. You don't expect the newest model to be inferior (in any way) to the old model.

Clearly they had to move the Speaker to make the phone better in every other way.
This was probably the best compromise and not an easy decision I suspect.
I've got the note II and using software mods from my rom the speaker is great, loud and clear.

I don't think I'm ever in an environment where I would use the speaker. I'm usually on a plane, hotel or conference room and I have my headsets with me. At home, I stream via blue tooth to my receiver. From a practicality standpoint, I don't use the speaker for music. I'll be curious to find out about the speakerphone on a call and how that performs though.

That is EXTREMELY disappointing.
One of the main reasons I gave up on my LG G2 was because the speaker was one of the crappiest and lowest volume speakerphone I've recently had on a smartphone. I loved how loud and clear audio was from my Note 2, it's sad that the Note 3 has even a lower volume than the LG G2
I'm hoping it's just a random bad unit that Anandtech got....

That would make total sense if the N3 was an audio speaker and not a smartphone of which the speaker is one of hundreds of sub-components. I'm disappointed but I'm assuming the reason the speaker's been repositioned and not as strong as previous Samsung devices is a trade-off for something. Maybe thinness? Regardless, as long as it's usable, I don't think it'll be as big a deal as some folks are making it.
And new generations of products most certainly can be lesser than their predecessors. When BMW moved from hydraulic to electric steering their fan base almost had a stroke as did most reviewers. But BMW made the change for fuel efficiency and have stuck by it. I don't know what Samsung's rational was for repositioning the N3's speaker but it is what it is. So if you want a Note with a louder speaker be prepared to hope for something better in the Note 4 next year. I'm getting a N3 this year because the speaker isn't even in the "top 10" of features I care about. YMMV.

So,not only is the S2 as smooth as every quad-core phone rocking ICS right now,but the Exynos is more powerful than I initially thought. And it's the first time I don't draw my conclusions based on benchmarking crap.
So,to explain what I mean.I was watching a movie on my phone.Avatar in particular, which was 1080p,with a huuuuge bitrate(the file was almost 12gigs big) and yet,the phone played it as smoothly as my PS3 without a hiccup or even getting warm.Even more interesting though,is the fact that I am able to watch some 720p and even 1080p videos, albeit without huge bitrates, using software rendering mode.I knew our GPU could handle HD easily, but the CPU?I mean, even desktop dual-core CPUs sometimes struggle with HD videos when they can't use hardware acceleration.
Anyway,I just wanted to share this to remind everyone that the S2 is still a beast. If I had to choose between the Tegra 3 and the Exynos 4210,I don't think I'd choose Tegra 3.
For a 1 year old phone it's still holding pretty well. Right now quad cores are a bit of an overkill, and they come at a price, lower single threaded performance, but hey it's a good selling point so why not. Personally, I think the Snapdragon S4 is the first SoC to dethrone the Exynos 4210, at least on Android.
Exynos is the best processor out there (though the s4 is really sweet)

Yep,the S4 is one hell of a SoC.The only thing out there right now that would convince me to give up my S2 for something other than the S3.But for now it's only in the One S.If they had made the One X with the S4,I'd already have bought it.But no,marketing won like yesteryear. The Tegra 2 was advertised as the super wow dual-core beast, but it was more of a competitor to the S2 than it was for the S3 and the Exynos.

Exactly.And we have a V8 here.V12 might be better,but still the V8 is sweet.
Still,my point is that it's better than I originally thought it was.
You know I was looking for a phone for some time but each phone had some faults which made me postpone my decision. Then the Galaxy S2 came out and gsmarena tested it and the sound quality was not really up to the standard of the original Galaxy S. So I had almost written the S2 off as well, but then I saw one video where they played a 1080p Youtube video in the native browser and it played flawlessly, this was the moment that I pulled the trigger(in my head) and bought it soon after. The thing is the other phones were struggling to play 1080 in native app and the S2 was able to stream and play in the browser with flash.
I was impressed with the rest of it, camera was good so I decided to just accept the average sound quality so I bought it. To this day it is one of the best purchase I have ever made.
I wholeheartedly agree with you tolis. This phone is really the best I have ever owned.
So far I had two smartphones in my lifetime; the iphone 4 and the Galaxy S2. And although I felt that the iphone was somewhat smoother in the overall experience, the S2 kicks ass feature-wise and comes out as the winner in many respects.
One of the things that bother me sometimes is the overall build quality which isn't particulary bad, since I dropped it several times on concrete and nothing seemed to harm this phone except for a few scratches here and there (and even those were hard to make out), but at times it feels cheap in the hand, although this might be a minor issue I guess.
The 2nd thing is the output quality of the soundchip; it's just atrocious if you listen to music through headphones, it is not as bad if it's connected to external speakers.
Overall I must say that I will be struggling to give this phone away, even if the new generation is just behind the next corner because it is still as powerful, or even more powerful than most phones on the market right now, so to upgrade to a new one if you are still completely satisfied with your current device is kind of senseless in my opinion.
This would also support the idea of planned obsolescence.

I love how durable these phones are. I work construction with a buddy, we both have the S2 and were both amazed how well the phone puts up with abuse. i've seen phones with dents on the back, mine personally has a ding on the front edge that would have shattered any iPhone out there.
Battery life is great for what i use it for and considering the size of screen, resolution is ok, the USB adapter i have to plug a USB memory stick into my phone is just sweet, overall this phone is a beast and im kind of glad theres new phones coming out to drop the price of the S2, you can get a used S2 here for like, $200 cdn? hard to pass that up if you dont wanna get locked into a contract!

Use a good piece of source (at least 198Kbps to 256Kbps depend on people) and a Okay sound card / DAC + Amp, plug your AKG in it and you will feel how crappy S2 audio output is.
Regarding the sound quality of the S2,I ain't impressed, but it's not that bad.Ok,it's complete crap if I compare it to my PrimaLuna RCU amplifier+Vienna Acoustics(don't remember the exact models) speakers, but not at all crappy compared to other mobile devices. It's by no means the best, but it's not the worst.Let's hope that the S3/whatever it'll be called will be better in that aspect.

Still,an overclocked Mali-MP400 built with a 32nm process will kick the ass of almost every mobile GPU that is out and will be out in the immediately foreseeable future.I too would prefer a Power VR series SGX6xx or a Mali T604,but if you think about it the Mali-MP400 isn't bat at all.
im no expert in sound. the output seems ok for me obviously not yhe best out there. the built-in speaker lacks too. the rest of the specs are very satisfactory esp the power cpu/gpu. cant wait for max payne.
re htc, they lack performance except one s or x. what i like on htc is the build quality. doesnt feel cheap and looks elegant.
Purchased by GS2 here in the states when it was first available. Around May of last year I think. Had been using an Iphone 4. Loved the GS2 and I prefer Android to IOS. But battery life just wasn't where I needed it to be and I sold it for an Iphone 4S. One day I came across the Samsung 2000 mah battery and had to try the GS2 again. Re-purchased it about 3 months ago and I have not looked back. The 2000 mah gives it Iphone like battery life but with all the benefits of Android. It still performs incredibly well and as of today, there is no other phone I would rather have.
HTC build quality is a myth, just like the iphone's even everyone knows it's crap.
I really thought that the One series is something with extraordinary build quality but seeing the drop tests I'm really disappointed. I really like the "cheap" plastic in my SGSII. It feels good in my hand and it's very durable compared to other "premium ****s".
I don't see the advantages for choosing unibody designs here. No micro-SD and no replaceable battery + the idiotic surveys made by HTC about battery. I really hope that S3 will not follow the pattern ...
I've seen S2 hit with a hammer, put under water, in a refrigerator at -35 degreess C, thrown 5 m in the air hitting the ground with the screen down and still working afterwards. Iphone stops working at -5 degrees C, cracks the screen before hitting the ground and people say that is well build with premium materials (wtf is wrong with you).
And not speaking how easy is to replace service parts on it. And achieving all these with replaceable battery and being very thin. It's really a technology wonder if you think about it.
But ... the most annoying parts about it are: the CRAP YAMAHA chip (FU Samsung) and the SH*T camera firmware on the international version. It's like Samsung didn't give a f*ck about camera and sound on this phone, but other than these, it's a GREAT phone
While still waiting for my note to arrive i would love to hear from anyone who has recieved theres what they think so far and what featured aere the best if not all....i hate waiting but reading peoples veiws will do for now thx

Not sure what the difference is between black clipping and black crush, all i knw is that on my s3 when i view most videos with the exception of extremely high quality blu-ray rips, dark scenes appear to loose detail, as if the black become blocky almost like they are not rendering correctly. however bright scenes in daylight or well lit rooms tend to display fine. i was just wondering if the note 2 has solved these problems.
its a very common issues on super amoled hd
I couldn't find it on mine (GT-N7100, ordered from Expansys Austria, shipped from Marseille). I could'nt also find any hint in the englisch manual I downloaded from the Samsung Hongkong Site. I read in a short review that a long press on the back key should bring up the multiview side tab. It definitely doesn't on mine.
Beside the little less text on webpages (which doesn't disturb my surfing experience) I couldn't find a thing that is not better than on the N1.

The plus points for me:
- The screen - brighter, crisper, by far better test result with the black clipping image presented on XDA, good outside visibility. Better automatic brightness handling as far as I'm concerned.
- The pen - oval, so that you can't miss the button side, thicker, longer, riffled button, smooth on the screen
- The battery - I used mine a lot during the day (as it is when you test a new gadget ) and I'm on 28% battery. Very impressed.
- The notification led in different colors.
- The speaker (clearer, more bass)
- Air View works much better than on the promo videos. Practicable and fun.
- Camera with a faster shutter and a lot of bells and whistles.
- Speed of the device - it's just fun to use it.
- Slightly better positioning of volume keys and power key - didn't press the power key by accident so far.
- of course a lot of software improvements but that may come to the N1 too.
Hmm pity about the missing multi-window feature. It looks really cool in that Korean promo video. I would guess it will come in a future update though. There is no reason to make it a Korean exclusive.
Otherwise great to see that you are enjoying the phone. Personally I was impressed with it right from the start but I remember there was a feeling of disappointment among some posters at the announcement. I think a lot of it was because of the slightly lower resolution on the screen. Also it wasn't quite clear at the time that the Note 2 uses RGB instead of Pentile. Anyway clearly the Note 2's screen is great which, combined with all the other upgrades, makes it a worthy successor to a great phone.
Someone needs to get a dump of the korean ROM and make if flashable on the N7000 Note ASAP!!!!!
That is such a killer feature to not have!

Believe me, the Note 2 has so much AI built-in (smart stay, smart rotate, mouse hover, multi windows....i can go on all day) that it makes me realize the name "smartphone" is suddenly an apt one for the device. The quad core + 2GB RAM + full rgb amoled screen yield an experience much like using a laptop so please dont listen to the ones who do not have the device yet and start comparing it to iphone5 out of boredom...doing that is like comparing the note 2 to a 1985 Motorola first generation phone.
Also for the first time I have absolutely no desire to put any custom roms on the phone....the firmware on the note 2 as it is now is an absolute triumph....I cant imagine why anyone would load crap made from the bedroom of some hairless nerd when you have a platform produced by hundreds of professional engineers that went through proper QA

You may change your mind about that when you find out your current rom doesn't support multi-windows.

Because historically, that 'crap' has been better than what the engineers put out?
If custom roms weren't better, each in their own ways, then nobody would use them.

I find this multiview issue to be weird. Cuz on the Swedish Note 2 manual that is the same as any N7100 it clearly states that multiview is available and how to activate it.
I saw a Swedish video of it with 4G obviously N7105 and sue enough. Multiview was shown.

Yup. It clearly states that "this function might not be available for your region or depending on carrier brand"
Found this on Entropy512's (Andrew Dodds) Google+ (yes, I know it's slightly old), but I thought it was worth reading. Perhaps all those complaining about audio, HWC and the rest of the issues with CM7/9/10.1 on CM's threads will wise up. These people do it in their free time, they have jobs!

Good hardware? Only processor buddy. I'm a former HTC user. well phone's Wifi connected faster, vibration chip was smooth not like S2's, build was better and screen maybe TFT but didn't have issues, I got a visible tint on S2's screen. I just switched for Development.

Yeah I can understand. Waiting for the perfect phone is tough. I so wish Google had made the phone a bit expensive but ensured quality. The audio static issue is so widespread that I didn't dare to get RMA. Even some people with RMA said they ended up the same problem again . Its very sad Google wasn't able to ensure quality and supply even with top notch software and hardware. I heard the new batches coming out won't have this problem. But by the time they come out 1080p screens will be in the market . It will be kinda stupid to buy N4 then. Lmao the situation here is so confusing. I personally will wait for xperia z, wait for the reviews by users and cm devs. If people say the build quality is excellent with no hardware issues and cm devs give it a thumbs up for excellent cm compatibility, then I'll buy it. Learnt from N4 that its best to wait for some reviews before jumping on a phone

N4 is FAIL in my opinion. Right from design materials (Cracked Glass back issue even present on Optimus G),Omission of OTG support ,lack of 32GB storage option, Product launch and availability , Google deciding to choose LG to manufacture it ...etc..etc
It sounds nice on paper but for 350$ price you have to live with flaws. NO phone is perfect but apart from s/w updates , I dont see anything good in LG N4 .

Hi, I sold my Note 2 for a HTC One. I always thought the speaker on the Note was very impressive.
BUT the HTC is WOW. Much louder and the sound quality is superb. Sounds to have a little bit of base too.

No I needed a change from Samsung. I do miss the large screen and all the Smart features. I've managed to find some apps that sort that issue out though
So far I am happy with the battery life. It did a full day yesterday. I`m still unlocking the screen every 5 minutes though just to look at it
If the battery life becomes an issue I`ll install Juice Defender.
Yesterday I had 81% left by 1pm and I had it off charge at 7am.
Hope that helps.
I came from the Samsung Note II as well. With the Note II rooted and on custom rom. I say the performance of sound on the Note II was louder and probably slightly better than the HTC One. I was on Perseus kernel with Noozide on the Note II. I felt the bass pumping on the Note II, whereas the One did not. Also I feel the HTC one just isn't loud with the two speakers.
I haven't found any tweaks to get the volume louder on the HTC one yet... Hopefully someone can pull off a hack to get higher db.

did that kernel add to the speakers? When I had my note 2 the speakers were horribly tinny and quiet. Not as bad as the nexus 4's though.

I respectfully disagree. The Note 2 rear speaker is damn loud, and I think from a decibel standpoint its about the same, quality though, the HTC wins out. My wife has a Note 2, I have a One and an S4 and I can honestly as after all the rave reviews of the HTC's "loud speaker" I was disappointed. It sounds wonderful yes, but its not "turn it down halfway because its so loud" like some of the professional reviewers say.
Im sure mine was loud when i first got it. Seems to me the new firmware reduced the volume.

I had a Note 2 on Sprint and then On AT&T. I left my Note 2 to get the One and I'm thoroughly impressed. Honestly, even though my Note's were rooted with custom kernels, they just weren't as sharp in the sound department. They were loud, but had a very tinny sound at high volume. The front facing speakers on the One really do the commercials justice. They are far clearer, and sound better than ANY other phone I've had.

Coming from a Note 2 and working with co-workers with a Note 2 I find this very hard to believe. I also tried this kernel and almost didn't hear any difference...before the note speaker sounded very tinny and afterwards it sounded a little less tinny. According to Samsung the speaker was not broken and within production tolerance. The lousy (quality and volume) speaker was one of the reasons to switch to a One and I didn't regret it one minute..
had the note 2 previously. The note 2 does sound loud when its turned over on its face but mine was rarely on its face, still sounded pretty loud though.
The One sounds very loud and because the speakers are on the face its loud all the time, The quality is also far far far better than the note. It wont replace a portable speaker though, understandably there isn't much bass(more than the note though).
Got my device yesterday, played with it most of the day. Overall very impressed!
Build quality feels good, got around 7hrs screen on time out of the first charge with variety of browsing, music, app installing etc etc Screen is very good with punchy contrast (much better than my Nexus 4) Loud speaker is plenty loud enough (again, louder than Nexus 4 IMO), vibration is strong so no missed notifications when silent. Only made one call on it so far, quality seemed fine, and no complaints on the other end about not being able to hear me clearly. Performance is great as expected, no slow downs when browsing and such.
There are plenty of reviews on the camera over in the Z1 section, so without repeating what's already been said: avoid the "superior auto" mode and spend a few seconds configuring the manual mode for the shot you want to take, and you get some great results. The superior mode seems to suffer particularly badly in poor light as it drives the ISO up sky high and produces horrible grainy photos.
Only negative comment I have is the screen protection, or lack-thereof. The screen its self is "scratch resistant" but there is a cheapy plastic film on top which I grazed within minutes, I'm told this can't be replaced or removed without losing the warranty. Sony do include a screen protector of sort that you can apply on top of this in the box, unfortunately its one of the god-awful 10 for £2 type plastic things. I'd suggest buyers budget an extra £20 for a good quality film or tempered glass protector to go on top. This is for me the biggest disappointment with this phone; having had my Nexus 4 "naked" most of its life, and suffering no damage, I'm very frustrated that my new £450 phone has to be covered with a cheapy plastic sheet to protect the screen - not good.
Any questions fire away and I'll do my best to answer.

LED notification is nice and bright, I've set up "light flow lite" to customize the colours / blink rate etc and all is well. I've tried to take a quick photo here, but it doesn't really do it justice. (excuse the terrible screen protector fitting, I threw it on in a bit of a huff. Waiting on a better one to arrive)

It has to. It's much more narrow and the screen is definitely smaller.
Thank you for your insightful input! One thing so important to me is screen and software responsiveness and fluidity...and you're the perfect person to tell me how fluid it feels compared to the nexus 4 and I will be eagerly waiting your response!
---------- Post added at 04:09 PM ---------- Previous post was at 04:04 PM ----------
how is the charging time? is it quick charge enabled?
Hi, can you also please put the z1 compact on the top of your nexus? It makes me easier to recognize the size difference
Answers to a few questions:
Charge time from almost flat seemed to be in the region of 2.5 hours, which is pretty good by my reckoning.
It feels a lot smaller than it looks. The reduction in width makes the most difference, and after 2 days using the Z1c the Nexus 4 feels chunky to me now. I don't have my Nexus to hand for size comparison photo now I'm afraid, but laying the Xperia over the top of the Nexus 4 allows you to see 2-3mm on all 4 sides. Next to no difference in weight, through the Sony feels more dense/solid to me - Gives a premium feel.
The phone operation is very fluid and smooth, I went through numerous custom roms and kernels on the Nexus 4 to get the kind of smoothness that the xperia offers right out of the box. Launching the camera app is very quick: Maybe 2 seconds from sleep (via the shortcut button), and near instant from the menu shortcut. Shot-to-shot time is very impressive too - This is one thing where the N4 was always poor in my opinion.
I haven't missed the screen size at all, others may I guess, but personally I prefer being able to operate the whole screen comfortably with one hand!
Thanks great to know the xperia ui doesn't slow the experience
Headphone sound quality
Hi Guys,
Some more feedback on my experiences with the phone.
I'm noticing improved WiFi reception compared to my Nexus 4, My desk in the office is a bit of a black spot normally. My laptop frequently disconnects from the wireless, the Nexus hardly ever managed to connect, the Z1c seems to obtain a connection here and I'm streaming music over it without dropouts :victory:
On a related note, The sound quality through the headphones is very good too. I'm using Logitech Ultimate ears 200, previously had fauxsound on the Nexus 4 for improved volume, and whilst this did allow my N4 to go louder than the Z1c does, the sound quality is definitely better here, stereo separation in particular seems to be better.
Mine arrived in the mail this morning, and I'm impressed so far
Still setting it up mind, but it's the perfect size for my hands (pretty much the same size as an iPhone 5 with a case on)
In comparison with my current Android phone (HTC One X), although in physical size it's only a little smaller to look at, it feels much smaller in the hand, and more usable (no over-stretching of the thumb, reaching for the on button, etc...)
And as for the responsiveness, it's genuinely on par with the iPhone 5 too!
I'm glad I took the gamble to pre-order! :good:
(Just need to set-up the SmartWatch that came with it next...)
Any impression about the ringer volume? I've got a Z, and I had to use a mod (replaced the Fusion3 file) in order not to lose notifications and calls.
quite surprised to see they did not include headphones.. I guess they gotta sell some bluetooth headsets..
Initial impressions coming from an Samsung Galaxy S2 with kitkat.. I miss the settings button And don't understand why they could not put the buttons on the empty field below the screen instead of using the screen .. :\
Laying the Z1c on top of my sgs2 is pretty much same size.. although the Z1c is a little thicker than the SGS2

if you care about audio quality, you'll already own decent headphones/iems and have absolutely zero use for any included iems which would stay wrapped up and un-used and be a waste of sony's dosh. much rather sony spent the money they will save by not bundling cheapo iems on a phones build quality etc

I don't own a Z1 compact (yet) but I had two Nexus 5 devices - both sent back to get a refund because Nexus 5 has some serious issues with its microphone. The audio recording is terrible during video footage and a lot of users complain about crappy quality during phonecalls (on the receiving end).
Here's a link: https://productforums.google.com/forum/#!topic/nexus/0hvTK4eMVGk
First impressions too
To share my first impressions: I received mine yesterday, and I spent the afternoon playing setting up the phone .
The size and weight are about the same as my previous phone (a HTC sensation).it fits well in my hand and well in my pocket too.
The built seem of quality, the flap are easy enough to manoeuver (and allow to plug cable easily), and seems built to last. Overall it gives an impression of quality. I don’t have any issue with the plastic protection screen.
On the software side, everything run fast, and smooth. I have been really impressed by the 4G: it seems merely as fast as at home. All the connections are running well (no issue with gsm, wifi, Bluetooth, nfc). Phone calls are clear, and the micro works greatly according to the “test” I made.
The only drawbacks I found are linked with my experience on my previous phones, and are softwares linked (it might be possible to solve them, but I have search yet to do so): I found the keys of the keyboard to be a bit too small; The intelligent dialer is not as good as I wish (start to look in the phone number before looking at name); I am missing the HTC clock which was also indicating the weather.
If you have any question, feel free!
