Is it possible to disable 3g completely in the registry. I almost never use any that requires it and i don't want to be charged for it.
Try using NoData this allows you to toggle if data connections are allowed or not.
Thank you. Does it matter that the G symbol occasionally shows up still?
No that just means you have 3G available on the network.
I'm having a very strange problem with mobile Internet. As soon as I launch an application which uses GPS the 3G becomes disabled (without any notification in HTC widget or Settings menu, only 3G icon in notification area disappears).
I cannot get 3G connection back unless I reset the phone.
I run Villain12.0 and 63.18.55.06PU_6.35.15.11 radio. Should I upgrade the radio to something else. What can you recommend for Villain12.0?
Thanks.
same problem here with HTC Dream G1 (ROM: froyobylazlo)
Can anyone help on the fact that enabling GPS disables 3G connection? Thanks
Edit: I found the solution here: http://androidforums.com/htc-desire/110012-gps-usage-makes-3g-connection-stop.html
just removed unused APN
I am using APNdroid app for switching data connection from WIFI to 3G. However, I need to restart the phone every time to make it work.
Is this normal ? or Is there anyway we can fix it? I have searched through all the threads but didn't get much info.
Your help is much appreciated.
Not the answer to your question, but if you turn off 3G *only* when you turn on Wi-Fi, you don't have to do anything. While connected to Wi-Fi the data connection isn't on.
If you leave 3G on, Wifi (when enabled and connected) will disable 3G. Also superpower (in the app store) will turn off wifi and 3g when the screen is off. I also recommend Power Control Plus which provides a widget in which you can customize each button and toggle 3G and Wifi on the fly.
Thanks for the replies guys...To be more specific on the problem , I don't have any issue while I am on wifi its only when I switch to 3G...i tried beautiful widgets also ...looks like the problem is with phone rather than app

switching wcdma to gsm gives problems here too, .. so i wont!
I have an Omnia 7 on US AT&T and my data connection is really slow, I suspect because it's constantly switching from 3G to 3G+. I had a Focus before that only had 3G connections and I didn't notice the slow data issues.
Is there anything I can do?
You download this xap (it work only if you have unlock your phone with Chevron)
In the screen you scroll in the way down e click on "Enable 3G Toggle".
Then restart your phone. After the restart you go to Settings-->Data network. Scroll down and you discover a new tab : 3G Connection . Shout down this and your connection should work correctly.
Thanks, but will that disable all 3G or just 3G+?
It doesn't seem to do anything, I toggle the Enable 3G and the 3G icon stays on.
I think that it will disable only 3G but i'm not sure :/
You try this and then you let us know
Okay as written on topic header I want to achive battery gain by automatically turn on 3G only when mobile data is switched on otherwise 2G should be active(so 3G and mobile data can be switched only by turning on mobile data). I tried to find some apps from playstore but there are only mobile data switcher and 2G-3G toggles(which only directs you to settings page). I can try tasker but I'm not very sure about it because it is also a background service so maybe it will consume more battery. What I'm trying to say is there any way to modify kernel or system apps so this task can be achived ?
That makes no sense... 2G is mobile data too. You can't use 2G data if mobile data is turned off, for obvious reasons.
You just need a 2G/3G toggle. Tasker would be a good solution, or perhaps Xposed framework with Gravitybox custom quick tiles.

I mean in mobile settings preferred mode should be always 2G for talking but when I switch data enable it should automatically select preferred mode 3G. So when I'm not using internet 2G should be selected what when I choose to use mobile data it should automatically select 3G (I happen to believe when 3g network is selected -even without data- consumes more battery and try to search for 3G signals which has no benefit for talking.)
Btw I tried to use tasker but android is not giving me permission to toggle 2g/3g network. shame I'm rooted, is there any way to get permissions for toggleing between 2G/3G without getting a shortcut to settings page(every toggler just giving a short cut and in Tasker 2G/3G toogle is unselectable and red)
Give Intelli3G a try http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2580234 works for me and has been the best battery saving method I've found.
I guess I need to modify system files on developer level which I do not dare, but I like gravitybox but now I miss ART anyway thank you both I guess I will stick with gravitybox
