Root Users: Performance differences? - G2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
Question for all you users who have rooted your G2s:
Has anyone noticed any slow & steady decreased performance since rooting? This seemed to be a problem with certain older phones (a la HTC Thunderbolt, perhaps?). And I was wondering if anyone had seen a difference with this phone. I know it's still new, but maybe someone has some insight.
Cheers!

Haven't noticed anything. Vzw G2

I only rooted so I could use viper4android. But no performance loss whatsoever.

there won't be any significant change if you just root it then do nothing else.

Usually the long term drop in performance with Android is the lack of trim support in 4.2 and back. Some devices suffer worse than others like the original Nexus 7.
4.3 adds trim support and most old devices can resolve the issue with the Lag Fix program which runs the trim command basically. Bad I/O Bad Device

G2 is a very flawed phone

Now that the honeymoon period is over,i have some serious gripes with this phone. first is that the radio reception is much worse than my g1. seems to be a universal problem. Now I don't get reception in half of my house, so I have to use the wifi calling feature.
Next is the gpu. Its just atrocious. does this thing really have a terrible gpu or is it a flaw with the stock build? All 3d games I've tried have worked terribly.
Finally, since I've stared using swype I haven't touched the loose keyboard. I just use it for emulators, which do work great.
Just wondering if others are having a similar experience. I really don't want to return this since I got it for free on contact. Id love it if the gpu and radio performed better.
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 using XDA App
Only thing I agree with you with is that the reception is pretty bad...but from what I hear that could be the rom I'm using...also, coming from a N1 the gpu on this thing just flies!
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App
Reception worse than the G1, wow. Mine is out of cell coverage in my house like half the time while my N1 has full bars and so does the Z (G2).
Which games have you tested? Ran a Quadant test? Could be just a faulty unit.
From my understanding this phone has the best gpu besides the sgs. i have yet to see any issues with any games. use that warranty and get a new one.
I don't have a reception issue with the G2. Seems like OP wants a phone with the 3G, the wifis, and the "bigger gee bees." :3
what score does the phone get in quadrant? which games did you try?
we need more details
I actually live in an area with great hspa+ coverage, so I'm not looking for 3g. This is why I didn't get the nexus s.
I get really good numbers with quadrant, but it doesn't translate into games performing well. I purchased reckless racing, which performs horribly. It runs great on the last gen ipod touch. Quadrant also runs choppy on the 3d part (like it does in every review).
I'm still using the stock rom rooted, maybe i should put cyanogen on. Anyway, I still love the phone, but these issues are just gonna get more frustrating as time goes on.
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 using XDA App
Ugh, ran quadrant again and scored a 1259. May be defective. Last time I ran I scored around 1550.
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 using XDA App
For reception,it might be a carrier problem
And for gpu, the new sprinter cell conviction and need for speed shift both run well, tests done by others shown that the g2 can 't play hawx though
I ran quadrant with stock pre-ota rom and got over 1600 to a little over 1700 mark

Wow! I guess I never ran Quadrant on a stock ROM but I haven't come close to numbers that low.
Running CM6.1, I would get closer to 2500 or higher.
I guess there is a possibility that you might have a flawed unit, but I share none of your problems.
I have ran Sandstorm, Avatar, a bad ass 3D pinball game and they performed GREAT!! If you are still within your 14 days, go get a mytouch 4G or just get your unit replaced. Before you leave the store make sure you take note of how the different areas of the phone perform with the new one.
My G2 is extremely fast. Never would have thought that rooting and using enomthers ROM would make a difference from just having root and no custom ROM, but it does. Fast scary fast.
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 using XDA App
Im not overclocked because I dont think the stock kernel supports it. I have setcpu but that's only good for undeclocking. I disabled every service when I ran quadrant and got those dismal numbers.
Looks like ill be stopping by the T-Mobile store soon. I may reset the device before I take it in. I appreciate everyones feedback.
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 using XDA App
I think that's a good idea. I have yet to find anything this phone can't play or do. Also, rooting is the way to go. Take the plunge, you won't be disappointed.
Seems like the OP is complaining about GPU performance based on one game? Try some others. NOVA runs great on my phone (seems like a pretty demanding game graphically) with the stock ROM & rooted (no OCing).
And you can't compare an iPod game with an Android one. Different OS and different code. Might be that game was just badly ported and crappy code.

If you are going to make generalized statements like this then you are going to deservedly get bashed. IT IS NOT A UNIVERSAL PROBLEM. I get outstanding reception. I don't have issues with the GPU, and the keyboard is fine. Follow the advice on these forums, or find another phone.
The only problem I'm having with my G2 is poor reception ONLY when using cyanogen mod 6.11. While on vituous or stock I get great reception. Any one else having this same issue?
Sent from my G2 , Running HTC sense.
After the ota my reception was fine, and this thing has one of the best gpu's of any phone out now. I have never had a problem playing any game.
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 using XDA App
My quadrant scores are typically over 1600 and I've never had a game lag (and I play a boatload of SNES emulator games and a few from the market).
Defenctive unit, get a new one
i should punch you in the face for talking about my baby in this manner....

Android 2.3 on Nexus 4

Come on guys, think about it. It would be so fast.
Has someone made a GB ROM for the Nexus 4? I bet it would be wicked fast and smooth compared to other ROMs with higher Android versions. Is there anything that holds it back from getting GB?

This is ridiculous. KK is more optimized than previous versions. JB is faster on my vibrant than when it was on older versions. My N4 is significantly more responsive on KK than JB. Going backwards will fix nothing.

Is kit kat on your N4 not messing up the responsiveness of your home and back keys? It lags so bad for me, and location services take longer on 4.4 for me. Idk why.

It'd be slow, the newer version are much more optimized, you can test web browsing with GB vs JB.
If you want to use GB, get an original Galaxy Note and use Odin to flash it back to Gingerbread. That was one of my favorite phone and one of the last phone Samsung made with decent build quality, imo (here come the Samsung fanboys).
If home button lags for you, try a different browser.

You don't think the Galaxy S5 has good build quality? The Galaxy note was more of a square brick than a phone imo. I think GB would fly through every benchmark and be way better in real world performance than JB or Kit Kat.

First off, going back to GB is just silly. Not only will GB been slower than kit kat, it is also ugly as hell in comparison, with half the functionality, plus many google apps need android 4.0+ to get their full functionality.
Kit kat runs faster than anything else on the nexus 4, especially with ART on. If you get lags/issues, then something else went wrong, most likely in the way you upgraded. I suggest you flash the factory images through fastboot.

Ps: is not lag like u running android on a 200mhz device, but its some little lags like samsung roms have.(who used s3 with ics knows what i mean).
Ps2: "Kit kat runs faster than anything else on the nexus 4, especially with ART on. If you get lags/issues, then something else went wrong, most likely in the way you upgraded. neither me dont know why, but yeah, i got better wifi speed(some ppl are complaining that) but lags on screen buttons, and on some simple things like recent apps menu. :/.
Lag is always relative to the individual person. Something that is considered smooth and "lag free" may seem the opposite to someone else.

Which one to replace Nexus 5? (Z1 vs G2)

I love the pure Google experience but internal memory and battery capacity of Nexus 5 is just killing me. I would go for G2, but I heard it struggles with poor internal memory performance. Can anyone confirm it with KK onboard? My N5 is .84 rw. Which one has better community support? I would probably flash cm/omni. And Im considering 16GB Z1 vs 32GB G2. I like the feeling of N5, and that's why Im a bit scared of Z1 huge frame, but stable and fully functional pure Google is the most important for me.
The lg g2 is the same hardware as the nexus 5 and it has worse support lg doesn't know how to make things without bugs and I don't know if I would go with Sony they are having financial problems maybe try a gpe galaxy s4 stock android easy bootloader unlock and easy to root and you get the latest from Google pretty quickly

I've actually found that the internal memory on the G2 is incredibly fast. Especially if you flash roms/kernels. It flashes so fast that the first time I flashed a big rom like rooted stock (1.7GB zip size) that I thought something went wrong and it failed. Install furnace kernel and set the readahead to 1MB and I doubt you'll see faster nand flash memory in any other phone out there.

Update to KitKat or Not?

After seeing many different comments. I wanted to get a general idea on whether to update LG G2 to 4.4.2 Kitkat or stay with the 4.2.2 JellyBean version?
I mostly think about the OFFICIAL Kitkat release, NON-ROOTED.
I have seen people talking about battery and bluetooth battery drain problems on the new update... So which one is better?
Thanks.
Got better for me when I updated, and or was pretty dang good before

Oh no. One of the reasons why i ditched my nexus 4 for lg g2 is because nexus 4 had bluetooth connection issues with my car. Looks like it has to do with google 4.3 and 4.4+ roms no matter what phone you have. I have heard only sense and touchwiz didnt have this issue in KK. As i drive a lot, i need this feature. Looks like 4.4.3 fixes bluetooth - hope we get it for lg g2.
Other than that only things you will loose going to KK is
flash wont work with stock browser even if you use hacked flash player - works with dolphin+jetpack though.
stock browser inverted rendering wont work - dolphin night mode is great though.
Battery drain difference between the versions are minimal. I tried both in my nexus 4. If you experience a drain, it might be due to play services. some versions keep the location services running even if you turn off the location. I use appops to turn it off and i get good battery in KK.
What kind of issue you have with bluetooth? Not connecting? or not auto connecting with paired devices?
Edit: Bluetooth working fine for me with kitkat stock. Same car with which i had problems with nexus 4, works with lg g2.

I'm really thinking of going back to JB. Battery was heaven on there. I used to go 30 minutes SOT before it dropped to 99%. Now, after 12 minutes it drops. Battery life is not bad but once you taste batter, well, who doesn't want to stay at better. I just underclocked to 1.5Ghz for the day to see battery usage. First time underclocked with any device.

[Q] Why is gnex smoother than g2?

This is a pretty odd question, but i think I still need to ask because i'm so damn curious. And don't get me wrong, i am not saying g2 is not good enough. I have a G2 international, so love it. I am posting this only because i'm really dying for the hints. And everyone's perception of "smooth" is different, and i'm one of those who can easily tell the relatively smooth from smooth.
Lets get back to business anyway .As it's known that Gnex was released 2 years ago,i dont remember the exact day. Anyway, here's a very interesting thing that i've noticed.
I have a Gnex of which the screen was broken until i got it fixed 2 weeks ago. And with a new screen replaced , i felt so excited then flashed a new rom(latest slim rom) with the dirtyV kernel, then set it on art. Then came the MAGIC!!!! a lot of apps that were laggy had become super smooth, like the ios smooth. No matter how i slide back and forth, there was just no lag and everything worked so great. I just coulnt believe my eyes. So I thought it was the ART MAGIC that not only enabled the Android devices to load faster but also increases the smoothness expereince of thoses thir-party apps.
Then i tried those "super smooth apps" on my G2 , i was so looking forward to seeing that g2 would be comparable. Well, it wasnt, at all. So then again, i thought, it was the ART. So i turned it into ART. there was a slight difference between davilk and art on g2 that i could notice when sliding /swiping up and down, left and right. it was a bit smoother, but not as that smooth as Gnex is.
So i started thinking maybe it was the slimrom that did the ART MAGIC. So i flashed the slimRom(stable version), which was on my gnex.(ofc, i know not exactly the same). Then i try those smae apps again, it was ok smooth, but not that great. So i set it to art, then again, it was a little smoother, still, it was overshadowed by gnex.
So i am now wondering whether Gnex with the omap4460 and SGX540. along with the 720p screen is actually beating the G2 with 1080p screen?
Or it's because the optimization of the roms hasnt been there yet?
Even on stock my G2 runs circles around my Gnex. On a custom rom full 24A Madhi Rom my G2 is even smoother. Maybe you have too many apps running in the background on your G2? Also if it is stock the G2 has overaggressive thermal throttling which will slow the phone down. I'd say try the G2 again with a custom AOSP rom and see how it goes.
i full wiped then installed those Apps, so the system was clean.within the system UI, yes they are the same.both super fast. i am talking about the difference when you are sliding up and down on those custom APPs.gnex is obviously smoother, like butter smooth without any lag. you can try slim on your gnex and use art with the dirtyv kernel.and run some APPs like Facebook, twitter or what ever you can slide on. and you will see
what I mean. g2 is fast,it loads faster, but not smoother.I think it could have sth to do with the animation?

I‘ll try and see, but i guess it wont work~ so curious about the myth of my Gnex, what does the Slim probable art do to it? there must be some tricks! I will be killing to know that and put it to my G2
ART definitely helps but my G2 runs in circles around any GNex I've ever used even stock. On Mahdi it's even better, and with ART on I can't make it lag if I try. It's like 5S smooth. I guess everyone's perceptions will vary. Play around with it, maybe something is causing it to throttle for some reason.

The S5 uses the S801, a minor leap over the 800 in the G2...However newer Snapdragons with the except series GPUs are improvements.

I said 5S, not S5 haha. I was comparing to the iPhone, since people seem to use that as a "smoothness" benchmark. I know the 801s are improved.

I just switched from the GNEX to the LG G2 and I cannot disagree more with the OP.
The G2 is so much better. Just try comparing browsing the internet with the Chrome browser on the two smartphones. My GNEX struggled to run Chrome in a reasonably efficient manner, while the G2 just blazes.

You are right, guess it's time for a stronger prescription.

As much as I loved my old gnex, it doesn't even compare to the G2 in every facet.
Your G2 has to be defective in some way.

it really depends on the rom. Here's the truth, if you flash the slim rom with the dirtyV kernel, then turn on the art mode. You'll see how fast your gnex go!NO kidding.
But g2 running with the Mahdi, ofc on art as well, the magic shows again! great!!!!
Thanks mate. Mahdi rom on art helps me beat my gnex again! it's really great!!!
