[Q] Compared to Optimus G Pro, How's the Screen? - G2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

The OG Pro has a great screen when viewed directly at it, which is 99% of how you'd view a phone's screen anyway. However, when looking at it from certain angles, the blacks are really bad and it looks as if you're looking at film negatives. Also, the OG Pro has a really reflective screen.

I haven't noticed the bad display when viewing at an angle on my G2. But then again, I didn't notice it on my G Pro either. Blacks are of course not nearly as good as with AMOLED but still fine. Haven't been as thrilled with the display outside, although many said it looks fine. Maybe I just need to play with some settings. I will say this:
1. When I was buying my G Pro, I found myself constantly looking over my shoulder at the gorgeous G2 screen
2. I ended up returning my G Pro and picking up a G2 and haven't regretted it at all! Loving this device so far

Anyone else underwhelmed by the screen?

Got my phone a few hours ago. Speed is really nice, battery already looks to be as impressive as I thought it would be (2.5 hours of playing with it continually and it hasn't budged), and it overall just feels like a well constructed quality device.
The screen however is another thing. The biggest problem is the colors are washed out, and the contrast seems to be pretty bad too. Going to play with a store demo tomorrow, hopefully I just got a bum one, but I'm getting the feeling after stuffing everything else in there they decided a to cut costs with a low quality lcd.
Really its qhd or super amoled? I wanna buy one but needs to match or be better then my nexus s screen.

The resolution is qhd, 960x540, which is nice, you get used to having the extra resolution real quick. The panel however is just a regular lcd, not amoled.

The qHD screen looked really damn good from the demo I saw in the store. I put it up against my IP4 screen, which was admittedly a little better (crisper and a little brighter), but the Atrix screen easily takes a close second from any device I've seen so far.
The color of screen is a huge disappointment to me.
Yeah people are saying you can't expect the vividness of the captivate. That's obvious, they're completely different kinds of screen the atrix's screen was never going to be as vivid. I'd just like the colors to actually be the correct shade, yellow is especially bad.
I turned auto brightness off and jacked it up to about 50%, helped the colors, but doing that really makes the pentile "matrix" show up.
I think the screen is pretty damn good.
The captivates S AMOLED is overaaturated compared to the LCD screen of the Atrix. qHD is just a higher resolution screen.
I have the captivate, my room mate just got the Atrix. I too am extremely disappointed in the screen quality. Still, everything else about the phone is great so far.
The screen is akin to the droidX screen which is terribly washed out and unsaturated. I doubt I'll ever have a display as nice as the super amoled for a long time since I don't like samsung. their stuff is all cheap feeling
First of all samsung is a pretty well regarded company in terms of overall quality of their hardware. Secondly, any sort of oled display will oversaturate colors, and you have become used to that. Any photoeditor/photographer will tell you that between the 2 displays, the Atrix will produce to most accurate color reproduction.
I have a Nexus One, S, and Atrix 4g that came in today.
Side by side, the Atrix's screen leaves a lot to be desired IMO. My Nexus S screen's black are so much crisper on the same settings and same extra wallpaper with flat black.
Other than that, my Nexus S just simply looks sexier as a phone but I am really enjoying the functionality of my Atrix. Sticking with Atrix since I'm stuck on ATT unless an ATT Nexus S comes out.
This is very, very disappointing news. I really wanted this phone but not if it has a sub-par screen. That's the most impressive thing about my SGS. It's the one thing Samsung got absolutely right. And I'm not willing to settle for less. Some say the colours are over saturated but I would take it's screen every single time over the IP4's. And considering the SGS2 is coming with an ever better screen... Well, it's beginning to look like those bastards are getting my money again.
Depressing.
This is very bad news to hear, I was really looking forward to yhis phone, but im too used to amoled screen, moto has to come up with sumthing similar
Screen brightness/contrast is one thing (amoled vs lcd)
resolution is another... 800x480 is overplayed and ugly, nothing has challenged the iphones retina yet
The atrix is a first in higher resolution, and I think thats a winner for me
This comes down to personal preference. The atrix screen to me is far better than the captivate and nexus simply because it doesnt exaggerate colors. I cant stand the over saturation on the SMOLED screens. Its literally brutal to look at.
the screen is not bad at all, you people are exaggerating
the camera on the other hand is kinda ... meh ....

the galaxy s 2 supposedly has a more natural colors, lets wait and see
800x480 resolution fail. One reason its difficult to look at those screens.

Would love for the sgs2 to have a higher res though.
Sent from my MB860 using Tapatalk
Sitting next to my Captivate, the blacks look washed out, but text looks way better. The higher res is nice and Im willing to give up the darker blacks.
Not to mention that my GPS locks in under 5 seconds and I didnt have a reboot yet.
Once you fully switch over and use the Atrix a bit, you wont notice the black level.

Screen Angles

Xoom versus a GTAB versus a SmartQ R10 (same IPS screen as an iPad):
http://www.slatedroid.com/index.php?/topic/15865-screen-angles/
Bottom line - it's better than a GTAB, but not as good as the IPS screen. The only pro for using it for comics is that the 16:10 screen ratio is almost perfect for a comic - very little of the screen is wasted.
I had a Gtab, God the viewing angles were terrible! I mean just awful.
No hardcopy to compare colors?
I returned my GTAB because of the viewing angles and the occasional touch failing to register.
The XOOM viewing angles are impressive. When I was shoing a friend how to use it at breakfast the other day.. I was able to look at it from my side of the table upside down and see it well enough to instruct him how to use it as well as press the right things. That is an impressive feat for any LCD in my opinion.
EDIT: Why is the XOOM out of focus in every single picture?
Same as you all on the gtab. It was so cheap but man the angles were so bad. I bought it at 8:30am and as soon as I got out of work I returned it.
I realllllyyy wanted to like it but man Viewsonic blew it. My Xoom isn't as good as my iPad but is more then passible.

I might have to do that, later - Sgt Rock just happened to be what was available at that particular moment. The IPS screen might actually be a little softer than the Xoom, but I prefer that. I can actually see the yellowing pages on some of the scans, on the IPS screen.
The Xoom definitely is passable, though. If I didn't have my R10, I don't think I'd even notice a problem at all.

PenTile screen?

I'm considering purchasing a Dell Venue Pro for AT&T. At $300, it seems like a pretty good deal, even if the new ones are coming out soon.
My question, does it have a PenTile screen? That would definitely be a deal-killer.
No, it has full RGB amoled screen. Not super-amoled.
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
The Venue Pro does have a PenTile (also known as Bayermatrix) Screen, its not the standard Matrix like a LCD would have.
Its a standard Samsung amoled, no super or super+
You certainly notice it on very bright colors, but its not as bad as i expected (its my first amoled phone)
Hmm. Two replies with conflicting answers and no answers by looking at specs. Anyone else? If it has PenTile, there is ZERO chance I will buy it. I had a Nexus One and I hated that screen.
It is PenTile, visible with the naked eye.
So far as I know, all Samsung AMOLED screens were PenTile until Super AMOLED Plus (as seen in SGS2). The tech was just not there to deliver a true RGB matrix for a reasonable price.
Damn. Oh well, saved myself $300. There is no way I will buy another PenTile screen.
Thanks for the help!
What's wrong with a PenTile screen?
I absolutely love the screen on the DVP. It's the best screen on any phone I've ever had. I hate super amoled and super amoled plus, I like my whites to be white. Not yellow.
I bought a Dell Venue Pro a few weeks ago and can tell you that the screen really is good. Colors are really ok and although the screen size is rather large, you will not be able to see any disadvantages due to the PenTile screen. I suggest if you are interested in buying one, then simply go to a shop and take a look at the screen for yourself and you will see that it is really good.
I compared it to quite a lot phones (such as LG Optimus P990, Palm Pre, Samsung Galaxy i9000 / i9100) and can say that the screen is far better than all the usual LCD screens and has no visable disadvantage compared to Super Amoled (Plus).
I do not believe the DVP is sold in any shops near me. The Microsoft Store had it when they first opened in November, but not anymore. I didn't get a great look at the screen back then, though. I was mainly looking at the hardware and it looked very nice.
I can't buy another PenTile screen, though. I can notice the crappy image that PenTile causes, especially to text. It was very noticeable on my Nexus One screen, the DVP has an even larger screen with the same resolution, making it more noticeable.

Screen: Arc vs Optimus 2x/G2x

As stated, this thread is purely about the display screen.
I previously had Optimus 2x before, and after dramas and adventures, purchasing an Xperia Arc/Arc S might be part of my plan soon.
Something from Optimus 2x that totally captivated me is its IPS Nova display. The colors are vibrant, power consumption is great, despite whatever other people say, the contrast is incredible, which even led me into believing that it was a Super AMOLED screen for a short while.
I know the reputation of Sony making decent display screens, but the TFT LCD just simply does not sound that attractive.
For those of you who had seen an Optimus 2x/G2x before, how do you think these two fare against each other in terms of screen display?
tl;dr: Optimus 2x/G2x and Arc/Arc S, whose screen is better?
IMO SONY's screen is better than LG's when you look straight on the phone without tilting it, BUT you're gonna be extremely disappointed with viewing angles on the arc.
I second this. The display quality is very good when looking at it directly but tilt it a bit and the contrast drops to ridiculously low levels. It's like Sony did wonders with a really crappy TN screen. You might also be disappointed with washed out dark tones but it's average for an LCD here I'd say.
If you believe that this phone packs great screen you will be disappointed. It's not bad, but it's not great by any means.

Times after times, I still don't really get why people care that much about viewing angle. It's a mobile device and could hold it however we want. Doesn't sound like a problem for me.
Thanks for the reply anyway.

I'm pretty sad to hear this, but thanks
I took a look at friend's LG Swift Black which is said to pack an IPS screen, better than 2X and I'd say the one on Xperia Arc is slightly better when looking at it directly. If you don't care about viewing angles I'd say it should be okay for you. It shouldn't bother you with anything other than the viewing angles. The colors are nice when looking at it directly.

Blueish screen when looked diagonally

I just got the white AT&T G2. When i look at the screen diagonally(when the phone is flat) screen looks bluish. Looks good horizontally and vertically though. Does it happen to everyone ? Is it a software issue ?
Blueish sceen when looked diagonally
Clear screen when looked horizontally
Although images are blurry you can clearly see the blue in the first image.
yeah, the viewing angles aren't good on this thing at all. idk why some reviews praised them.. my droid dna is clear at every single angle and doesn't color shift at all.

What are you doing under those angles? You really use your phones at such POV?

Lol, that is true but you expect a perfect phone right. My HTC One looks great no matter what angle. It didn't take too long for me figure this out. Also i am not too fussy about detail so to speak. Yet i find it annoying because lately products are coming with so much quality check up and perfection and have made an average perfectionist like me look for finer details.
Viewing angles are not so good blueish in some angles and warm in other. But overall a very good and thoughtful device.
I know exactly what you're talking about. Not a software issue. I also have a G Pro and the blue tint when viewed from a diagonal angle is far worse than on the G2. On the G Pro, some dark images even look like negatives when viewed from those angles. Optimus G has this problem too.
