Ordered a Nexus 4 - Ubuntu Touch General

Ordered a Nexus 4 today for the purpose to be used with Ubuntu Touch. Will be fun trying it out.

That's basically why I bought my N4 as well. Grabbed it when the price drop hit and I'll get the N5 as well. Dedicate my N4 to Ubuntu Touch and run the latest Android on the N5.

Same here. I like it so far. Just need to fix mms and be able to set music as ringtones.

You can pick one up used and probably new at Amazon.com
It works fine with t-mobile in the US. It doesn't use the fastest LTE, but you'll get 6mbps/1mbps.

You people in US are pretty lucky in this matter. Here in India, Nexus 4 is either not available or it is at same price as that of Nexus 5

I just picked up a nexus 4 for £50 and I flashed Ubuntu touch onto it yesterday.
Seems like the no brainer device for Ubuntu touch given its 2ND hand price.
If I had shelled out £150 for the Aquaris I would have been miffed.

My theroy about the 5 nexus devices rumor

rumors have been going on about the 5 nexus devices to be released this year as Google io is done the nexus Q is 1 Nexus 7 is 2 and there are rumor of a nexus 10 device which could be 3 and 4 is the next nexus device and 5 could be their own branded Google Tv
I'm wondering whether Google will release a Nexus phone this year as in November, the galaxy nexus will have been out for a year...
Sent from my Nexus S
figure 1 phone and possibly another Tablet, who knows about the last. It's a shame the NexusQ isn't a GoogleTv device but no reason it couldn't be upgraded to one in the future.
I think it may go something like this (slight modification to your idea):
Nexus Q
Nexus Tablet 7in
Nexus Tablet 10in
New Nexus Device $500-$600 - This is the device to rule all devices
GNex Reduced to around $249-$299 - This will allow for a budget friendly, unlocked and powerful device for people who do not want to drop the big bucks for the new device (see above)
If this was the case I would grab the Gnex for my wife and the New device for myself!!
10inch tab is a must
Sent from my Nexus S using xda app-developers app
I'm going to have to disagree, the Xoom still fits that area pretty well (especially since it just got JB) and the Nexus 7 owes most of it's success to it's price point (which I doubt a 10 inch version could come close to since it would need a higher resolution than 1280x800).
Is there the possibility for a 8.1 inch Nexus 7? This should keep the price still lower than $500. Perhaps $300, and a really good size-neither big nor small.

It doesn't make sense to release a new device for 1.1 more inches of screen size.
I personally don't want a nexus 10 but to be different I suggest nexus 9 i have had 3 10 inches tablets (HP touchpad, Motorola xoom , and Samsung galaxy tab 10.1, ) and the bn nook color along with a iPad 3 (mywifes) and I have to say.... when I went to best buy to check out Samsung's 8.9 it was just the right size .... didn't get one because just don't have the money .... so nexus 9 FTW!

Are Nexus 7 owners still happy with their device now Nexus 10 is announced?

I recently sold my iPad as I havent used it since becoming an S3 and then a Note 2 owner. My initial plan was to get the new 32gb N7 as I liked the size of it and the specs seemed great too. Plus the fact its still a portable size and not to clumsy to handle.
Anyway, since seeing the N10 specs im in two minds as what to do. Are any N7 owners thinking of selling up and moving to N10 or is the N7 still capable of holding its own.

I'll move to the Nexus 10 once they announce one with a cellular radio. Otherwise, I'm happy staying on the N7 for the time being. Besides, once I get the N10, I'll gift this to my mom.
I will keep my N7. And for N10 I learned my lesson not to be an early adopter and wait a few months.

So I had a nook color as my first tablet which was 7 inches and loved it, then got an HP touchpad and put ice cream sandwich on, and I can say I rarely used my touchpad, I would a little bit here and there but it was big and bulky to carry around, however since I have gotten the nexus 7 which is almost 2 months ago now, I haven't put the thing down.
Its small enough to put in a bag, and comfy enough to type on using both hands without having to prop it up or manipulate it differently.
While its still has enough screen real estate to scale stuff right, also the UI that Google put on this kinda big phoneish in a way is awesome, this is a device meant for portrait use where as the nexus 10 feels landscape bound in nature

Most of the time I prefer 7 to 10. There are times 10 would be better (working at a desk, or doing a presentation), but if I had to pick one size it would be 7. I do wish I could have gotten 16 gig of memory for the same price though, although I'm doing fine with 8 with some care.

Yes. Because a 7inch tablet is not a 10 inch tablet.

I already have a 10.1" tablet along with my Nexus 7 and my S III. I'm good with what I have.
If the Nexus 10 and 7 were released at the same time, I would still have purchased the Nexus 7. Its a great device, and its Google's flagship. It has a great dev. community, its $199...love it
I love the 7" format. So yes, I am happy with it. Great product for the price. The 10" was much more than expected and in no position to spend that much on a device at this time.

When the 7 was announced I decided not to buy it because I prefer a bigger tablet for reading documents and web surfing. The price was great, but so is in the 10.
Seriously... 399$ for a 10 inch super hd screen with powerful processor and 2GB RAM? It's as great as a deal as on the 7.
7 is too small for serious work. If I were going to use it only as entertainment then it would be enough.

i know the nexus 7 only came out in june but do you think its to late to buy one because im thinking of grabing one tomorrow or should i wait till the next one comes out :/ ? any input would be appriciated
I would get one now, after all it hasn't been out for long. I would buy one now and enjoy what there is to offer at the present, if you keep waiting for the next piece of hardware you'll never enjoy and appreciate the current technology, and you can always sell it when the "next Nexus 7" is released.

The N7 is an excellent 7" tablet IMO. I'm extremely happy with it, and so is my gf's son who got one for his birthday.

The only question to ask is Do you get 32gb or the 16gb.. Or WiFi or 3g if available where you are.

I went 16GB wifi because I have a 32 GB phone if I need it. However, Gamestop had a $50 off deal and there was only one 16GB available. Might need to go 32 regardless. Good buy though, I just got mine a couple days ago. I don't need a huge tablet, I wanted more of a reader and this blows the Kindle away.

You most definitely won't be sorry. I think if anything you were smart to wait since the 32gb was release and the 16 gb was dropped to $199.99.

I think you should go for a Wifi version if you already have a phone.
Since the next-gen Nexus is no way to come out soon, and new version changes nothing in performance but has 3g and more storage capacity, and the price of nexus 7 16gb wifi dropped. I think Nexus 7 16gb is the optimized choice atm.

Choosing a device for Ubuntu

looking at Canonicals system requirements for Ubuntu here, it would appear that even the nexus 4 which is the best officially supported device currently isnt up to the "Superphone" requirements. The gs4 google edition seems like a reasonable choice however it only has 16gb emmc so it too doesnt fully meet up to the superphone requirements. I am seriously considering just waiting for the first snapdragon 800 phones to ship as i would expect much better performance for ubuntu.
Do you think the snapdragon s4 pro(nexus 4), or even 600(gs4 ge) can provide a good ubuntu desktop experience?
I think that a regular 1.2Ghz Dual Core can provide a good ubuntu desktop experience.
A nexus 4 or gs4 ge probably can provide an awesome experience.
LG Optimus G could handle Ubuntu touch fairly well.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
Ehh forget the optimus G, it's all about mako.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
The "requirements" are set for phone manufactures so that when Ubuntu is ready to be released on devices the requirements should still be a top end phone. Those are not meant to be read and followed by normal users flashing over Android or something.
Well... you make a compelling argument for the nexus 4. Im really debating picking up the white model when it comes out now. However i still feel hesitant knowing the phone has already been out for 9 months and will likely have a successor in the next few months.

If you prefer to wait I would say wait at least until its specifications is revealed.
But don't be afraid of buying the Nexus 4, it's a good choice.

For now I'm putting daily builds on my GNex... Ubuntu Touch is is no way ready for seamless desktop mode yet...
Once it all comes together, the N4 will probably get UT and see use as a daily driver. The system requirements cited in the OP are most likely for OEMs considering new hardware dedicated to Ubuntu Touch. Meanwhile, while the world waits for that dedicated hardware, the Nexus Line is obviously the smartest choice for LTS (Long Term Support) through Canonical.

If they cannot get a manufacturer to support them and out out UT devices then the Nexus devices are the smartest choice, however if they have a manufacturer that is wanting to build phones specifically for UT that would be the best thing for them to do and the smartest choice. I don't see many big manufacturers steeping forward though and I wonder if it is Google stopping them from doing so, that's a little tin hattish I know but.....
