Android data plan on iPhone? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshootin

Anybody ever switch SIM card back and forth between GS4 and iPhone? I know an iPhone data plan will work on an android, but will an android data plan work in an iPhone? Or do I have to call AT&T and switch to an iPhone data plan if I want to switch back and forth between GS4 and iPhone?

It works fine. I do it when my phone died.

AT&T data plan is the same for all smartphones. No worries.

Thanks to both of you.

[Q] Iphone data plan on Tilt 2

I got a great deal for a used Iphone and have been using it for the last week. I had to switch data plans to the iphone only but I love my Tilt 2 and would like to use both phones but inserting my sim card into my Tilt 2 will only let me use voice plan but no data. Any apps out there to fool att in thinking I am using the iphone when I am really using the Tilt 2 so i can get data.
Instead of using the MediaNet connection, change the Tilt2 to use wap.cingular and it will be invisible to the network.

MediaNet IS wap.cingular, it's the APN. AFAIK, ATT only has two, and the other is for Paying Thether users.
Hm, I have a similar concern as well.
Currently I use a tilt 2, but my friend has an old 3GS that he doesn't use. I have a grandfather plan of unlimited data under tilt2, but I plan on playing with both.
Does anyone know if I inserted my Sim into the iphone, if it would mess with my data plan.
Regards,
K

Actually, it isn't. I created a new connection using the wap.cingular as my connection and then set it as my default connection for all usage. Now, when I log onto my AT$T account online I no longer see my phone or am able to access any info about (minutes/data used, etc.). If I switch back to MediaNet the phone miraculously reappears in my account. Something about accessing the network directly using wap.cingular changes how the network sees the user.

It will definitely mess up your plan. ATT will read the IMEI number on the phone as being an iPhone, and they will switch you to the iPhone plan. Furthermore, not completely sure but I think that once they take a grandfathered plan off your account, you can't get it back. So I wouldn't mess with this, and risk losing the unlimited data plan.

Figured so! Thanks! It's not a big deal to me as I have an itouch as well. WifiRouter + Tilt 2 + itouch, I would take over iphone anyday! (takes away all the programs that only require wifi problems away for one!)

I am still using the unlimited $15 data plan I originally got with my RAZR V3. Updated to an Incite and now the TP2 (both bought off Craig's List) and they still haven't changed my data plan to a required Smartphone plan.

There is no such thing as an "itouch". Please call the product by its proper name, the iPod Touch.

Are those phones ATT branded, or not (seems like at least the Incite would be)? ATT seems to be pretty good at picking up the IMEI numbers for their branded phones. But mostly have no way of knowing the IMEI numbers for non-ATT subsidized devices.
I've read of some users on the ATT forum of having their data plan changed the same day, after inserting their SIM into an iPhone that they got from a friend, etc.
Both are AT$T-branded phones. I don't know about iPhones, but they can't change your plan without your permission or without you changing your contract. Changing phones does not qualify as a change of contract since the contract is for service, not phones. Every time I call in for something they try to get me to switch my plan, but I tell them I don't want to lose my grandfathered unlimited plan. They tell me I'm not supposed to be on it with the phone I'm using, but they are powerless to do anything until I either change it myself or upgrade my phone through AT$T and sign a new contract. Not going to happen anytime soon as I'm very happy with my Tilt2.
My wife & I have been with AT&T for near of 7 years now, and we are on the grandfathered unlimited data plans for both my tilt 2 and her *gulp* iphone4. We recently had a house guest, and we activated my wife's old iphone 3g. It too was instantly put on the grandfathered plan, as well as the rest of our family plan.
Adding a line does not "qualify" with AT&T as a contractual change UNLESS you buy a new phone. If your recycling an older phone, or you out right bought another one from some place else.

WiFi Router requires a cell data connection, and allows you to share it with other devices. How does that help in this case???

[Q] Focus on AT&T with iPhone data plan

I currently have an iPhone 4 and I just bought a Samsung Focus (out of contract on ebay). I want to be able to switch between the two phones periodically as I plan on doing development on the Focus. However when I put my sim card in the Focus I can only get edge data. Does anyone know how I can get 3G without changing my data plan with AT&T?

Interesting... You get 3G on both the iPhone and the Focus? Is your Focus unlocked or anything?
there are three different data plans for att. smart phone data, blackberry data and iphone data. you're going to probably need to switch back and forth between iphone and smart phone. if you have unlimited it will probably going to be a big hassle for you if you don't want att to screw it up. good luck

both phones show 3g and neither unlocked.
I have both phones and switch between them all the time, no problems with 3G on both and my account is setup for the iPhone unlimited. I don't even use a sim adaptor I have just learned how to put the mini-sim in just right.
There's two data plans; Blackberry and everything else. As long as you line the sim card up properly or get an adapter you'll be fine. Be careful, it's very easy to snap off one or more of the pins that connect to the sim card when using the microsim with or without an adapter.
I've noticed the data roaming defaults to off on the focus. Maybe you are in a 3g roaming area for AT&T? I think the iPhones data roaming defaults to on.
u shouldnt have any trouble...
Popped out my SIM and re-seated it. I have 3G now!! Thanks for everyone's help!!!
Interesting, I had a lengthy conversation with AT&T support about this a couple days ago.
I bought the Focus from AT&T and the changed my dataplan to smartphone instead of iPhone without telling me.
I bought the Focus for development, and wanted to continue using the iPhone 4 in the meantime.
I had a couple of issues with both devices when switching my sim back and forth.
1) My voicemail was not set up properly on the Focus. Data worked fine.
2) Although the iPhone had a 3G icon, there was no data connection when disabling wifi.
The AT&T support rep kept telling me there was no way to have both data plans unless I wanted to buy another line...I kept telling him that I pay for the service, not the device, and therefore I should be able to switch all I want, so he should just enable both, but to no avail. There are three data plans, iPhone, Blackberry, and Smartphone.
Now my question is, if I tell them to switch my data back to iPhone, will it work for both in reality (ie. did they lie to me?). Then, will my voicemail be screwed up on the Focus?
Thanks,
-Holtz
Use my sim. That is on iPhone plan and get 3g in my n1 and focus. For what its worth. Had iPhone 4. Sold it. Never told att. Have grandfathered unlimited. As well. Reset the focus. Mine was weird. At first too.
Now I see you got it. Lol helps to read all the screen. RATS!

if its on the iphone plan it wont affect the focus' voicemail... it will function the way it is supposed to... what screws it up the other way is the visual vm..... ive left mine on the iphone plan for all of my other phones and they all work fine...omnia2..hd2...captivate...i900...omnia7...focus....
I'm in the same boat as a few of you, my buddy went overseas and left me his focus. I was an iphone 3gs user on at&t, now I'm a Focus user on at&t. and i didn't use an adapter. i didn't even know it "sorta" needed one. i just slid my sim card in and it's all good for me.
I am using both iphone 4 and focus and I get 3g on my focus just fine. I have the iphone unlimited data.

Unlimited Data For Anyone! (AT&T) [IPHONE 2G REQUIRED]

Hey guys just upgraded to Atrix liking it so far! Never had unlimited data before but couldn't justify having it without unlimited data so been researching the current loophole and just wanted to share what I found out.
1) You must have an iPhone 2G, and a sim card that has never been registered to an iPhone 2G before
2) Hard reset the iphone, put in your simcard, and register the iPhone 2G in iTunes. You will be asked to confirm you agree to $20/month unlimited 2g data + 200 text messages.
3) Check online account to see if plan went through, or call 611 and confirm.
4) Find a CSR that will change your Iphone 2g plan to unlimited smartphone personal. I tried over the phone multiple times and they kept on saying they couldn't do it since the unlimited plan didn't exist before June 2010. I was about to give up but went to a retail location and the guy did it on his computer.
5) Enjoy your unlimited data!
NOTE: Whatever you do DO NOT let them change your data plan off the iPhone data plan. If you lose that plan you need a new simcard and to start over. I think I may have had more difficulties cause I am on a business account, but it still worked!
I am almost certain that you came in my store and I did this for you hahahah
I had someone come in my store this evening who did the samething...we werent in san diego but he lived there

Does it stay $20/month...?
what you are doing is making your phone an Iphone 2g.
making your phone an Iphone 2g gives you the unlimited 2g data (that comes with 200 texts as well) for $20.
Our in store systems allow us to go from unlimited 2g $20 to the unlimited 3g/4g data for $30 giving you unlimited data to your atrix/inspire/captivate if you didnt have it before.

Or you can "request" unlimited data with customer service on a new 2yr contract upgrade or new you have to do it through customer service and it might take a few calls Ive been able to add it without a problem on 4 lines last weekend. If you have 2g/3g data on the device you may experience service issues more awkward than normal by using this method in the OP I had a 3g unlimited on my main line and upgraded without change and pages barley loaded with full bars, this is not recommended to use the iphone data plan.
Will update with the feature code and name as soon as I can.
Would this work with an iPhone 3g? My friend has one lying around I could probably borrow to swing this. Also wondering about the ability to get unlimited texts.
edit: And I'll probably try the whole, calling customer service until I get what I want, plan soon.

No it won't work for a iPhone 3G. The reason this works for the original iPhone is that the only option for the phone is unlimited data. The 200 text messages has no affect on you if you have family messaging unlmited etc. Even if you have unlimited text you can always call back in to get it added back on.
So i tried to do the trick with an Iphone 2G, I checked online to verify and i think it went fine. Also online it gives me an option to change my Iphone Data plan to the Smartphone Bundles (1. SmartPhone Personal Unlimited Data with 1500 Message for $39.99 2.SmartPhone Personal Unlimited Data with 200 Messages for $35.00 3. Smartphone Personal Unlimited Data for $30)
Should i keep the Iphone Data plan or change it to the SmartPhone Personal plans?

Option 3 is a current unlimited smart phone data plan for the device, its thinking you had it and changed devices use this option so that way the data plan will work correctly for the device. You'll still have $30 unlimited data aswell.
If you are getting the option for smartphone personal unlimited that is the correct data plan for the atrix. iPhone plan doesn't support 4G as far as I know, if that ever happens.
This trick is more common for iPhone 4 users, where once they plug the sim back into the iPhone 4 the system automatically detects it is not a 2G device within a few hours and auto upgrades them to the $30/month iPhone data plan with a text messages alerting the customer. Chances are you will not be able to stay on the $20/month plan so I'd switch before AT&T realizes you are using a 2G iPhone data plan on an Atrix.
I should be good if i change it to the SmartPhone Personal Unlimited Data with 1500Message for $39.99 right?
Yes, It's still a smartphone unlimited data plan!
it's giving me this error when i try to process it.
What should i do now? call customer service?

You are never limited to 200 texts even on the original $20 iphone plan. You can still add a text plan on top of it. It just uses your 200 and then starts using whatever else you have on plan.
But when you move to the $30 plan you lose the texts anyway.

Email From ATT (I need to change to a 4G plan)

I just purchased a Atrix yesterday at the NO Committment price. After playing with it last night I received an email from ATT, telling me that I need to switch to a 4G plan. I was planning to move my iphone sim back and forth between the phones. I do not want to lose my unlimited data. Is this not possible? I have a micro sim to sim adapter so the sim card is not a problem. The data seemed to work find between the phones. If they can't do this I will have to return the Atrix as I want to keep my unlimited data.
before i sold me iphone 4 i used to do this as well. I bought a micro sim adapter from amazon and switched between the atrix and ip4. Not once did i receive an email or txt...hmm... ill keep an eye out now...
yes, you can keep your unlimited plan. many on XDA still have theirs! just go through the process they outline, make sure they keep you on unlimited, and you can still sim swap just fine. (I don't think this will muck up a sim swap from iPhone to Atrix and back)
are you happy with the Atrix?
I work at an ATT retail store just tell them you're doing a smartphone to smartphone exchange and you want to keep your unlimited data. No problems

yes I am. It is a great device! I am awaiting shipment of a Samsung Galaxy S II just to see what all the hype is about. I plan on keeping my Atrix as well, so we will see how it goes. But my ordering the Galaxy S II has no bearing on what kind of phone the Atrix is. I think the Atrix is still phenomenal. If you are coming from an iPhone, there are definitely differences between each OS and you will be doing more learning of Android in general than just the Atrix. Enjoy!

The OP said he/she wants to move the SIM back and forth between phones!
You cannot do this. The iPhone and Atrix are different plans. You can keep your unlimited if you choose to use one or the other, but there is a smartphone plan, iPhone plan, and Blackberry plan. You can't jump between them at will because you have 2 phones! You will have to choose one phone and stick with it. You could do this with for example 2 Android phones, 2 iPhones, or 2 Blackberry phones, but not mixing them up.
I have found that if you have the iPhone data plan you CAN sim swap, but if you have the smartphone data plan on your account data will not work on the iPhone if you swap.
Maybe I shouldn't contact them and just leave use the iphone plan on the atrix. Everything seemed to work fine. Isn't it true that there is no such thing as a 4g sim card?

They will do something in two weeks
In my case, ATT did not do anything until 2 weeks later. ATT has different data plan names for iPhone and non-iPone smartphone. I believe iPhone plan is named dataPro and 4G plan is dataPlus. If you do not call them up, they might switch you to the 2GB/month 4G plan in two week.s

How to get Unlimited dataplan from AT&T?

I am planning to upgrade to Galaxy S II. Before this i was no not having any dataplans on my previous phones.
Is there any way to get $30 unilimited data plan with the phone.
Note: I an presently not having any data plan so cannot be grandfathered into
Nope! Unless you already have unlimited data with AT&T which means they will Grandfather your unlimited data plan.

How would I go about doing this? I have a Skyrocket at the moment, but I also have an iPhone 2g at my disposal.... I used to have the unlimited data plan but took it off since my phone broke.
if i could get the loophole working i would go for a gs2 or GN
I just got the 15 non-smart phone unlimited data plan speeds of 3-6.5DL and 1-2UL.
I used 13.2GB and no Text or any thing. I just got a RAZR and was able to get unlimited.
I got lucky. I was on Alltel w/ unl. data before ATT bought them out in my area.

I'm not sure of the exact way, but there's a thread on the Atrix forum on how to do it.
One requirement, the SIM card that's going to be put into the iPhone 2G could NEVER have been activated on an iPhone, if it was, you'll need to get another SIM card.
I have a Blackberry Bold now and i used to have an Iphone 3GS
Ok. I had and I-Phone 3GS and now i have the limited 200 megabyte data plan. I have an I-Phone 2G at my disposal can i do the loophole and will it work? And After I change to my I-Phone 4GS that I renew this January will I still have my unlimited plan?
