Hey guys
Am using cm9 with sdmerge 4 so i have enough internal memory. My problem is that i have little ram left this leads to my phone being really slow and i hate this.I was wondering how i can increase the Ram.

if you have big games on internal, you can use directory bind, you iwll have the apk on internal, and the rest of game on external sd
How do i really use directory Bind and where can i find one

You never used Linux distro before, right ?
Swapping isn't a non-stop r/w actions, the kernel will swap things when needed. You can set swappines value, bigger the swappines, the more kernel will swap things out from memory.

Its a bad idea for a newbe to enable full swap in the device, there are two bricked phones while experimenting with swap here on the forums

the best is to use KSM(Kernel Samepage Merging) and Zram, but the kernel must support it.all is better than swap i think.

How to use Swap space on SD to increase ram on our devices so we can run more demanding apps.
swap is possible only with custom kernel, so it will not work for us
I believe that doixanh proved more than enough that custom kernel is not needed for any kernel modifications Still, we would need a module.
but i don't think that he should make swap module it will be better if he will finish this
Well, it's up to him what he wishes to develop
IMO swap is useless for Android. It has its own memory management already.
And it would certainly take a high class sd card, AND it would be harmful for it So next time we should just buy a phone with bigger RAM memory

So, how can we increase the memory through SD, my finding isn't good ? If not, how to do it the right way?XD

I don't really care about my SD card's health XD i just want more ram XD
But what do you need slow RAM for? RAM is very dynamic and since we already use app2sd it could even slow your device down instead of enhancing performance...
EDIT: Well, maybe it would be faster if you have a class 10 card...
Yeah SD is slow and putting swap there will be incredibly slow.

Yes, but i want this because you know that there are some applications that won't run on X8 because of it's low ram...so, i dont care about about speed, also, i don't use app2sd, so no slowdown, I am using Class 4 card
Yeah I know. Just my opinion

So, is there a way of using ram just for the ram consuming apps, to make X8 able to at least run them? (You already released an SD card speed fix, so it should go a bit faster...Can you help me, cuz i really like running RAM hungry apps and i don't have enough ram :|
No I don't know about that. Haven't tried swap thingies yet
for example, there are games, like dungeon defenders that requires 256 MB of RAM at the runtime (it's the requirement of unreal enginge 3 i belive). some guys have managed to run the game on LG swift, which is pretty much the same device as x8 when it comes to hardware. maybe it's not running too fast (although i saw some video where it was even faster than on some more powerful devices), and it's not quite playable, but some people might still enjoy it. and without SWAP, it's impossible; and it's just a one example.

Yes. great. ideA. but... is posible?

Hi ...
one question:
Is there an advantage to use a swap partition?
And there are also disadvantages?
For example, read/write-speed or lifetime of the SD-Card?
cu TM
It´s only a good thing if you have a high class sd card
Personally I don´t use Swap since my phone is fast enough and i don´t see that big advantages of this "extension".
Thanks for the information. So I thought it ...

If you use a swap file from inside your /data it increases performance a small bit. If your using any of the Ubuntu on hd2 stuff, you definatly want a swap file, as the GUI for Ubuntu likes to hog the small amount of ram.

Most Say that a swap file doesn't make Much of a Difference, From personal experience I would have to disagree
Running free in the terminal on a normal nor swap enabled day I would have 22 - 200 free, this is running no programs, and 3 email accounts
Recently I created and enabled a 512MB swap on my SD, against my better judgment of swapping on solid state..
This has had Drastic improvement in performance let alone free not showing 3916 free in mem and 14424 used on the swap, My shift is alot more fluid and responsive,
Your results may vary but i figured i would share my results
Im running scarystable comp cache 18%, vm heap 48m on CM7 nightly 238
again I don't claim to know anything more then the next guy Just sharing my results
Give me about 15 minutes and you can have these types of stats when you type free in terminal. It does help, regardless of what others have said. And scary kernel will work.

I love it, Now my only worry it the wear on my SDcard, but I figure aslong as I delete and create the Swap file once in a while it will ware evenly, I just never expected this kind of gain from it.
I will admit 512 may be overkill but it sounded nice
Thanks for your results!
The problem with swap files/partitions is they're slower then ram so you need to buy the highest class sdcard your device can handle to have anything resembling a positive effect and they'll destroy your sdcard. Plus unless you have a script or app to manage swap its a pain to have to disable and re-enable swap when attaching to your pc through usb.
With our devices having 512 ram and something like V6Supercharger with compcache disabled I've found I always have more then enough free ram for pretty much anything.

Yes, but a swap partition can -not- increase the physical read/write speed of the sdcard which is the point I'm making. Is swap file slower then a partition? Yes I never argued that. My argument is swap in general is slow.

Swap
Swap is not meant nor does it truly need to be fast, From my understanding it takes whats not being used from ram and "swaps" it to disk to free up ram for programs that require the speed, It is not a replacement for direct ram.
None the less I thank sparksco for his Post and will be trying it out later in much anticipation

I guess its okay to use swap. Swap increases your ram and so you can preform better multitasks.
I think the con is that the phone gets slow if your SD card is not good. But i am really not sure on this one

SWAP expands your RAM, so when you have it, you can open more apps than than you could without it.
If You're not trying to run many RAM-eating apps at the same time, you're only wasting your SD space.
I close every app i don't need, so SWAP i useless for me. Also i'm using Dorimanx ROM, which when SWAP is enabled has no built in task manager. If it wasnt like that, i would probably have it, just in case.
About slowing phone down: SWAP will never work as fast as RAM, since it has slower access time than native RAM. It's just to keep everything going even if you ran out of RAM, maybe a little slower, but still.
Hello guys,
Our X8/W8 is a slow speed device and without proper memory management there would be many lags and unresponsiveness in our device. So to overcome these problems I have some tips and thought that I will share it with all you guys.
These are those tips that I know of and those that I believe will actually speed up your phone and some tips here will also allow you to conserve some battery life too.So here we go:
Dont use too many apps.Delete all unused apps.
Dont use more than 2 launchers in the same device. It will cause a lot of RAM loss.
When selecting your default launcher try to select a launcher that is small in size so that it will ony take up a small amount of RAM.
To reduce HomeScreen Redrawing check the "Keep Home In Memory" app found in almost all Custom ROMs.This will reduce the time taken for your HomeScreen to fully load up after you exit an app.
Dont Undervolt the CPU if you find that your Phone is becoming too slow.
When selecting a rom make sure that your ROM is lightweight(small in size). The Custom ROM runs in the RAM of our device and when the Custom Rom is small in size then it will take up only a small amount of RAM and you will have more free RAM.
Odexed ROMs should technically speed up your Phone but the difference will be only minor.
If your manufacturing date is 11W29 or below then it would be good to unlock the Bootloader and flash a Custom Kernel. If the Custom Kernel is a good one then we can notice a change in our Phone's speed.
Remove all bloatware from the Custom Rom.
Reduce the use of Live Wallpapers.
Turn off 3G, WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS, Data Services etc when they are not in use. This speeds up your Rom and also conserves your Battery.
Overclocking should be done ONLY when needed so bad. What it does is that it supplies more power than needed to you CPU and tries to increase its clock speed. This may speed up you phone but it also OVERHEATS the CPU and as a long term effect it may destroy your CPU.So you will have to buy a new phone!
Its better to have a darker theme than a lighter one.Darker themes conserves the Battery and also speed up your device a bit.
Dont use a Third Party Task Killer app. Android will manage it memory by itself.
After Rebooting or Turning on the device wait for a 1-2 minutes even after the screen is fully loaded. This allows the ROM to settle and you can use it more efficiently afterwards.
Use of V6 Supercharger by Zepplinrox,The Adrenaline Engine etc has to be considered over Overclocking as overclocking will ultimately damage the CPU.
This list of tips will be constantly updating. If you have any tips that you use to speed up your phone please post it here and I will add it to this list.

Have somebody seen bricked x8 by overclock? I don't think so. I'm using my phone with maximum oc my phone can run. 245/787mhz for about year (since I have bought it) and it is still working great without any issues.
Sorry for my English.

In all my life I have never heard this before.I dont think Android will kill the SystemUI. It is like killing itself, and that is NOTlikely to happen. The "Lock Home In Memory" doesnt make your launcher indestructible! It just make it a little more difficult to kill but yet "kill-able".It will kill the launcher only when a lot of other unwanted apps have been killed. That option just gives the launcher a little more priority.
Code:

When you overclock have you ever touched the phone's back???
Well you can see that its hotter than usual. This means that more amount of power goes into the CPU.
For example, You take the case of a LED.When you give it the right amount of power it lights up very well, but what happens when you give it a lot more power than needed??It will overheat and eventually get destroyed.Thats the same thing that will happen here.Overclocking may not explode your CPU but if you have overclocked for a long time and then switch to normal then you can see that the CPU is now less efficient than it was before overclocking.
Cheers
Leon
last mini cm10 nightly + nAa .32 v4 its pretty fast but when I add Seeder app it seems to be a lot of faster.
App is reduced some lags so maybe it's only illusion
By doing implementing these tips you can get a better speed without much effort. But surely these tips wont make your phone an Xperia Z but you can surely notice some effects.
Swapper 2
Does using swapper 2 or a similar application help ?
I personally wont recommend Swaping. It will reduce our SDcard life. And we need to use a very high quality SD card which is very costly and and you will have a reduced life span of SD card too. But if you can afford buying a High Quality Class SD card once in a while then its OK.
