VAT calculator - my first apk - Java for Android App Development

Good day, guys!
I m trying to learn java and Android SDK and i thought that the best method is through practice. I developed a VAT calculator and I seek guidance from you for improvements and tips
Thank you
P.S.
I am a new user and I cannot post links, so for my apk you can go to play store and search for "tiberiu grigoras"

there is little to no design consideration in the app, looking at the screenshots, who would want to read black text on a really dark background ? Design is not something thats an absolute, and it is not a direct answer most of the time, it's rather something you learn over years or get someone else to do

well put it this way, not being able to read text cause of the colors for the font and the background color, is a primary reasons for an instant uninstall... if that is not a reason to update the app, thats your choice... and there are many suggestions from a design standpoint, but if you don't see the big "show stoppers" there is little point adding trimmings
Don't want to sound harsh btw, and as always, this is just my opinion

I made some changes based on your suggestions, thank you . Let me know if it should be anything else

I would have a look at Fluid.
Fluid has many similarities, it looks great and it's free. The downside is that there is no real design time support in Visual Studio, there are no controls in the toolbox to drag to the form in order to design the layout. You have to design the screen with code, which means you'll only know the result by looking at the device emulator.

Check it out, have fun and good luck with your projects!

[Dev] Are You Ready For A C.H.A.N.G.E.?

I am still mostly new to developing (since august and only released 1 app in the market) and I have an idea for a home-replacement. I only have sketches of what I would like it to look like. Since I have already posted the pictures and the descriptions of the functions of the UI on my website, I will just give you the name of the website to go to. I am asking for collaboration in making this a reality. Credit will be given to all of those who help, even if it is to tweak the icon. If there are any questions, please ask. You can either PM, email, or post a comment here or on the blog to reach me. Thanks in advance

Brilliant idea. I was searching for slide-out dock or something like "fan". I would like to help you, but i know only BASICS of C++.
If I understand you right, you have in mind sth. like this:
-Objectdock
-"fan" like menu
-Circle dock
P.S.:
I found side-bar like app and it's called Smart taskbar (sidebar). It's good but i don't like full screen look. It would better looking sth. like Objectdock.
I can try to help, I am currently in school for software engineering. My Java skills are decent, but I'm really not familiar with the Android API's so I'm not sure how much help I can offer with my busy schedule. Regardless, send me a PM if you want help.
this looks really nice...I like the fan like menu alot
Try talk to the people/person behind slick ui.

Love the idea! I think it looks like a home replacement that i would actually use and as long as it's stable it would rival launcherpro
I am willing to do some very basic development (i am currently learning java) but I cannot code very well but I can deffinatley give some tips and do LOTS of beta testing.
please PM me when you start the development for this app or sooner.
thanks,
ljbaumer
EDIT: I probably won't be able to help that much with the deving because I haven't worked with the andorid APIs yet because I am still learning but I know all about the SDK and how to use it completely. I also know a lot of overall android info.
Thank you all for replying. Sorry it took so long for me to reply. I just recently got the XDA app and I could load up all of my threads. I have made some progress on the home replacement app. My first problem was to get the app to be accepted by the phone as a home replacement. I got that figured out. Then I placed a simple grid view in the app containing all of the application icons from the phone. My current problem is that I don't know how to make each icon launch the application. If anyone knows how to do that, it would help tremendously. Once again, thank you so much for hearing me out

I need a new idea?!

Hi to all, please i need an idea for an app to develop? i don't need a brilliant or complicated idea! just a simple one to be achieved by us (me and my friend), our goal is to bring a working android app to life.
I have an idea:
Make a app which has more demand but less competition in Google Play
Like Education base or Virtual Reality app

Examples of an Education base app:
app which has collection of maths & physics formula so that students:fingers-crossed: don't need textbook to Remind/view formlua....etc
Example of Virtual Reality app:
awesome 3D HD Role playing game where user can feel himself in game world like GTA, may payne game.
TIP: Game must be made for Tablets/Phablet with OpenGL3.0 to get most awesome graphics
Thanks for your help. I like the first idea, it's very interesting but the second is far beyond my capability (to buitd an entirely 3D engine!! it's scary.)
Like i said i'm a just helpless newbie. Any other ideas? i appreciate your help.

I would recommend that you first start off with some really simple programs like a Calculator etc.
Once an app gets developed and works properly; your confidence is bound to increase; helping you make better programs!
You could create a vault for the android phone. The vault can then store all types of files like images, text documents, videos and its back end as the sd card. The data in the sd card should be encrypted.
To open the vault you could put up 3 levels of security, like first a 4 digit code, then a pattern, then a question. So that the vault remains safe

A vault is like a safe, or a locker, where you store your things safely.
Create a safe, locker or a vault for your data. To keep your data safe in a lock

Agree with you as aptitude matter a lot at placement time.
Rest any suggestions on same would be appreciated. A lot of updates are pending on the same as I have having some signing key issues and I'm not sure if its still resolved.
Thanks

A little suggestion:angel:
make this app compatible with budget Tablets
because in india, i dont think college/parents are so rich to give hi-end tablets to their kids:laugh:
& also create separate version for tablets/phablets as screen size is large so UI must be eye catchy
at the end of aptitude add "share" icon/button so that result can be shared on fb or something else(optional)
& try to Save result in PDF file or HTML file so that user can see result on any device any time
:good: Hit thanks if i help you:angel:

Nice suggestions, I had made the layout catchy but sync with git ruined everything...Also I was not able to set it up for every device size...
Rest for tablets I have to use Fragments...Lets see whenever I would get time,
Sharing on fb seems to be good suggestion would try to include that in future updates.
Creating a pdf, html , dont think its a constructive one as no one would be interested to check his/her score out of the app.
New Idea
Build an app that can send text to pc over wifi or any wireless medium & also vice versa...

[Q] Best Step by Step tutorial for app development

Hey guys! I'm new to app development world, I have a good amount of knowledge of c/c++ and learning java right now (I'm an engineering student), and totally interested in making my own app for android, I have made some basic apps, but it would be a real help if I get a good tutorial for bigger apps and also a tutorial for 2-D gaming on this platform for now....thanks in advanced!
I just recommend you to visit http://d.android.com/training it'll introduce you in all the basics and advanced techniques.
Not this buddy....I want a bit simpler tutorial....that one is too vast, I want a tutorial that specifically teaches for one particular type of app, example: making a 2-D game, or building a browser, or a messaging app, etc.

I think those topics are a collection of hundreds of patterns, knowledge, implementation and understanding, so better to start simple rather than ....well.... as the saying goes...learn to walk first before you try and pilot a space shuttle
Just a suggestion
Note : there maybe dvd sets that show what you ask, but I would suspect it would be months if not years of learning for a nice grounding in what you will need.
I know basic bro....

I just said I made a few basic apps, I don't wanna sound rude but I have learned to "walk" , just needs a few directions before I start to fly.

Sorry was speed reading to just try and offer help... as I said there are lots of resources, but for something like a game, you have mass resources based on the tech/engine you choose (http://stackoverflow.com/questions/17163446/what-is-the-best-2d-game-engine-for-android)... if you choose one of the popular ones there are tonnes of resource. As for building an app, it's just a little ambiguous. A screen that displays a black view fullscreen is an app. I think it's best to evaluate the market see whats missing or can be improved upon and start that way.
BTW I was confused on you saying you wanted simpler than d.android.com/training (which is like the starting point from zero) But I think I get what your asking now
That helps a lot thanks!

Thanks man! That helps a lot and if I may ask for more then are there any tutorials for simple multiplayer games....I know I have to set up a server to which a user can connect to,but I don't exactly know how to do that...so a tutorial on it would help
Also tutorials on multiplayer games via Bluetooth connection would be nice

that I cant help with and would be on par with you in having to google, if I were to speculate then I would assume that lots of the core elements like profile linking, indents, scores/stats and states are/can be handled by the new google play services game stuff... but just have a read on google/android site, cause I would say yes to having a server for MMO games but no if it's either 1 to 1 or not realtime.
btw not many do bluetooth these days, wifi network or wifi direct for local games
I highly recommend "android bootcamp series" (sorry I can't add link, so please write it in google).
This screencasts explain all building blocks in Android in easy way
Check vogella.com, you'll find a bunch of examples. Really helpful.

An Honest feedback

Hi guys,
My name is Miki and i am a part of a team that developed an app called PieIt, its an app that allows you to ask a question and get a quick ,clear percentaged result. from different users.shaped as pie
Currently its available only for android and it up in the "play store".
I would appreciate if you can give it a try, Any feedback regarding any issue UI,concept... really anything is Welcome!
I even added a question in the app so you can vote and help us get a real sense of your feedback.(after you download the app look for "What do you really think about Pieit?"
Thanks for your help!

I'll feedback some on your marketing and Google Play page, not the actual app:
First if all you misspelled the name of the app in your post here, so it was kind of hard to find it. I finally understood the name is Pie-It, not Pielt or Pieit. So uh, might consider that in your marketing. Pieit is very hard to understand what it is, while Pie-It makes complete sense. Small but important difference.
Besides that I like the idea and the user interface design. I would probably try to add some color to the icon though so it stands out a little more. I get it follow the same design as the UI, but I think you could make the grey part green or something (like you do in the app) and it would still fit nicely.
