How old is this and is their anything better? - Nook Color Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Its been about 8 months since I rooted my nook and set it up for roms.. I don't like running them from SD so I have them on the emmc (?) And it seems my bootloader has gotten older. What do you think?

If it's not broke, don't fix it.
The bootloader's age does not matter if it is doing its job, which is loading the kernel and the operating system.

I forgot even where I got it. Wondering if there is an update and possibility to dual boot stock.

Yes, you can. Go to my NC SD installation instructions linked in my signature. After that gets working it will have the latest cyanoboot so you can boot back and forth. You can either put stock on internal memory and CM on SD or vice versa. If you want to reverse them I have instructions and zips that will let you put stock on SD. The instructions are on my NC Tips thread also in my signature (item B11).
EDIT: I see in original post you do not like SD installs. In that case you can put two systems on internal memory. Look for Taosaur's dual boot thread. But be warned it can be risky messing with internal partitions.

A lot less risky than repartitioning internal memory. In fact, there is no risk at all with SD installs. Internal memory is not touched and if the card messes up, just format and start over. No harm done.

If you meant SanDisk too, it will make a very stable system that runs as fast as internal memory.

When you install CM to SD it partitions the SD so that a little is used by the operating system (on your 16GB, it will be about 3GB) and the rest is used for your media storage (in your case, about 13GB). The problem may be to get nookbuntu on internal to see that media storage. We can hack CM on internal and stock on internal to see it, but not sure about nookbuntu on internal.

It is an old device so it will never be really speedy. The fastest ROM on it is CM7.2. And many say specifically the Mirage 7.2.

Hello,
Could you please help me for a couple of questions?

1. Yes, you need a 64gb card to root
2. yes, but you will need a 64gb card for this too.
3. At this time all roms have to be imaged to a 64gb card to run.

I have no idea what he's talking about. You can use any SD card 2gb or bigger. The ROMs currently available are CM7, honeycomb (based off the SDK), and stock 1.2 rooted. For honeycomb and CM7, you can install it on the eMMC or run it off the SD card.
Here are a few links:
1.2 rooted
SD Card installs (ROMs)
Dual Boot ROMs (eMMC)
NookDevs Wiki - Tutorials and other info.
Between those and this forum, you should be set. Extra bits are Netflix on the Nook, and running Tegra 2 Apps. I'd recommend overclocking if you do any of those though - once you overclock to 1.1ghz then everything is fast as can be.
Honestly guys sorry!

OK thanks i'll check it out. I was reading last week that you can have a ROM on th SD Card and just reboot through that, and if you dont want that, just take out the sd card and you have the stock ROM. Is that true, or not so much?
Because i live in Europe, i dont want to mess so much with NC, as if anything goes wrong i wont have a store near me to go and get some help!

The Nook will automatically boot from the SD card, so I would just pick up a spare sd card to try out one of the ROMs. If you like it, you could install it on the internal memory, eMMC, or dual boot.
The great thing with the Nook Color is it's almost impossible to brick, and everything I posted is completely reversible. Worst case is you take the SD card and run clockwork recovery to restore it.
Just to get the full experience, I would root stock 1.2 with Manual Nooter (look at the link I posted before), so you get the full Android experience with B&N's mods -- best for reading btw. Also, most of the apps on B&N are paid apps, but, on the market they're free. That's an incentive to root right there.
ok thanks for your time!
Great to be also in the Nook family of users now!
Will try it with my 2gb card first and then will buy a bigger one. Would the class of the card have any material differences on the Nook performance?

Quite a while. It won't happen until they get the 3.0 kernel done. You can follow the development here, but don't ask them for an estimated completion date:

Which method did you follow for installing CM9?
Is it new or upgrade from other rom?
Produced by NookColor at ICS 4.0.4
Not sure, its one of eyeballers nightlies. And I'm guessing I'm not putting the correct cm9 program on my card, are their different mods for your hard drive then their are for the bootable sd card? Now my problem is that when I put my sd card with cm7 back in, the nook had to reload its stock rom I guess cause when I turned it back on it said something like it was reloadIng original image. Then I had to register it again. What's freaking me out is that now when I run My cm7 sd card, its running choppy, things are force closing in every direction, when before it ran perfectly. Have I somehow shot myself in the foot or is there some way to fix this? Thankyou for your help

Did you use an open GL cm9? I'd almost bet you did. Follow the instructions given by dizzy and leap and it should get you going. I tried updating from cm7.2 to cm9 open GL (I think June 11th) and mine blew up pretty bad. Not even a restore from a back up helped.
CM9 on SDcard install
I've been running CM9 for a couple months now. I installed a fresh image on a Sandisk 16Gb class 4 card using Samiam303's variation on Verygreen's procedure and update occasionally using CM9 nightlies from http://techerrata.com/browse/nightly_kangs/encore (see [ROM][NC] Unofficial CM9 Nightly builds - with/without OpenGL). It's been pretty stable, a bit slow at times, but mostly works with the notable exception of Netflix and USB/UMS.
I did run into one other glitch when going from the 6/13 to the 6/20 nightly OpenGL update. MTP stopped working. I tried several different driver configs on my XP machine without success. Going back to the 6/13 nightly brought it back and that's where I am now. LeapinLar solved the problem for ADB by modifying the .inf file which might give a clue to how to get MTP working, but that's stretching my capability. This and many other useful tips are in his post [USER][TIPS]CM7/CM9 User Tips From LeapinLar.

Netflix does not work for anyone. But UMS and MTP should work. For MTP, but sure USB debugging is off in development settings. For UMS, it needs to be checked in settings and when you plug the cable into the PC, a dialog should pop up saying to turn on USB Storage. Be sure to select that.

Your welcome, I share what I think peeps will be interested in. Just tried it on SS vXI . Took about 15Min. , but while it was going on I still received a couple of important Texts. Which I wouldn't have been able to do being in Recovery. Will try a restore a little bit later. Still not sure how I feel about it though.
So just my results with this. I was running CM9 and made a backup, did a full wipe and flashed a Sense ROM. Then restored back to CM9 with no ill effects. Yeah now it runs in the background. But from what I have seen the shift has a very painfully slow recovery process all around. Like on my doubleshot, I can fully format and flash a ROM and have it on the boot animation by the time I format system and data on the shift. By the time the shift is ready to flash I'm already booted into my ds restoring my apps. Anyways just rambling

[APP][v5.1] Multi-kernel, Multi-OS -Modded Tassadar's Multirom Manager

People like me find it really impossible to switch back from ics to gb permanently. And its also impossible for me to keep using ics, with poor video recording and playback, GPS wakelock bug, crappy game performance and buggy bluetooth. And you can't keep ics and gb side by side with the original multirom since they need to be compatible with the same kernel. But with this app, you can
What is Tassadar's Multirom? See website and original thread
Features:
Apart from the existing features which were there in the original app, this has:
ROM switching:
This app changes kernels by creating boot.img backups and flashing them. Flashing hardly takes a second in gingerbread. In ics and higher, it may take a bit longer.
ROM zip modder (to flash directly sd-ext):
You can use this app to modify your ROM zip to flash directly to sdext. You can flash it with any recovery. The modified rom zip will have multirom embedded in its boot image. So, no need to flash multirom after installing every rom.
This method is experimental.
A few points worth noting here:
-- Modded zip names will have the prefix "mrom-".
-- The boot image (with multirom in it) of the last modded zip is stored at /sdcard/multirom/tmp_boot.img. You can simply rename it with any file manager.

Version history:
v1
Added boot.img backup / restore. (Backups are stored in /sdcard/multirom/)
Asks for default boot location after you flash.
Added back and reboot buttons in Updater, so that you can reboot right after flashing.
Enabled ICS theme and made some layout changes to suit with it.
v2
Now its possible to select a backup ROM as default after restoring boot image. (For those who keep 3 or mopre ROMS).
Fixed Czech translation
Fixed a minor bug which was there in the original app; it displayed "Multirom folder not found" instead of "No backups found"
v3
lots of bugs were introduced in the last version. Choosing backups should work correctly now.
v4
Now you can flash a rom to sdcard directly FROM ANY RECOVERY.
When modding your ROM zip, a preview of the updater script will be shown. You can edit it, if needed.
It is recommended to keep a copy of multirom.zip on sdcard. If you choose to download it from internet, it will be saved at /sdcard/multirom/multirom.zip.
You can now erase your default rom (on sdcard of course) directly from this app before flashing a new one. Go to "manage ROMs".
Also shows the size of your default ROM.
bug fixes.
v4.2
Script will mount sd-ext automatically before flashing in recovery.
if /sdcard/multirom/multirom.zip is found, it will use that for preparing zips.
v5.1
fixed "Cant move active ROM to backup!"
fixed absurd behavior and FCs during zip modding, which would happen if you cancel the process and try again.
shows detailed progress during zip modding.

I have tested this method with cm9(arjen's nightlies) , cm10(rasheed's rom) , cm7(gingerblur) and stock roms(dynamite and resurrection).
Long method (only if the above process fails with certain ROMs):
Its somewhat similar to the original process here.

- Make nandroid backup (ur gonna need this). Wipe. flash ROM which you wanna to have on SDcard.
- Flash multirom.zip, even if you did earlier ( because everything gets wiped after flashing the ROM ). Get multirom.zip from http://tasssadar.github.com/multirom
- Backup ROM's boot.img with recovery (preferably AmonRA, because it lets u do selective backup). you need to copy the file to /sdcard/multirom/ later.
- Go to "MultiROM options" menu and select "Create from current ROM".
- Restore nandroid backup from beginning of this step and reboot.
How to switch ROMs:
1. (Only if you haven't done this before) Backup boot.img of current ROM
2.
Warning: To backup/restore a boot image, you need at least 160 MB of free RAM. This is not a big deal in gb (where u have 300+ MB of RAM). But in ics, you may need to free up RAM using a taskkiller. A bad flash will make your device unbootable. (you will still be able to boot in recovery though)

[Q] When will we get L?

How soon can we expect to get "L" ? Will it be CM12?
I wonder what the cute name is, how about Lemon drop?
I can guarantee you it will be no earlier than when ever cm12(or what ever the cyanogenmod team calls it) comes out.
But also, dont forget that the nook color is a 4 year old device, pretty old by tablet and android standards. Im still surprised that they got cm 11 working okay-ish on it(kudos to the development team, amazingly you are still keeping this old tablet alive). And also dont forget that android L completely ditched the dalvik runtime, leaving only the ART runtime for all devices. The last time I checked the development page for the nook, didnt they have issues with ART, something ram related maybe? They are working with a single core 512 Mb s of ram tablet, even cheap tablets nowadays come with a dual core cpu, and at the minimum 512 Mb(most likely 1 Gb at this point) of ram. The nook may be able to run android L, but it could possibly get too laggy for any real use, unless if the development team can get it stable again at higher cpu speeds.

Are you saying that support for NC is about to end? I had hoped that L would be
tuned for small memory devices like by beloved NC.
What is the best version of CM for the NC? I mostly use it for G news and G mail.

I gave the MiRaGe image a try but it hangs after a reboot.
I'm currenty at CM11, do I need to downgrade my CWM too?
Or maybe I need to do a full wipe and then try? Pretty annoying... hrumph.

If you have CWM v6045 or newer you must downgrade to an older version to install a CM zip older than CM11. V6045 or newer only works for CM11.

I am using CWM V6.0.4.8. I don't think I want to down grade CWM just
to try out MiRaGe. Could I boot MiRaGe from an SD card? Or would
CWM still be a problem?

Yes, you can run mirage from SD or you can also make an older CWM on SD to install the mirage to emmc without touching the internal newer CWM if you desire. Mirage runs fine if installed internally with the older CWM on SD. That way it is there if you want to return to CM11.

Cool, that is what I want to do. Is there a simple how to make a bootable
SD document someplace?
Thanks for the help!

I thought you meant a bootable CWM SD. If you want an SD that will boot the mirage 7, follow my guide here:

Thanks! That worked well -- once I saw the bit about the zip file needing to
start with "cm"
