So the next Android release has been named Kitkat and not Key Lime Pie. Also photos of the next Nexus seem to have leaked as seen on the unveiling of the Android Kitkat statue.

I can't wait.. will surely buy one for me
after a closer look at the picture, it seems to me that the words at the back of the "nexus 5" reads more like "asus" than "nexus". what do you think?
EDIT:
Nah. It really is a nexus. (see attachment)

I love the homepage of kitkat: http://www.kitkat.com/#/home it's a parody of an android device announcement
It seems like the time for the upgrade is approaching

Kitkat sounds delicious. xD
I hope 4.4 is lightweight. It would be pretty great to have 4.4 running well on our phones.
I can't wait to see 4.4 kitkat run in our old device...
Let the Dev do the 'magic'...
Great
Kit kat is coming
If the ram usage and the stability on kit kat will be at least like on CM10 on our device it will be great
Android 4.4, KitKat
It's our goal with Android KitKat to make an amazing Android experience available for everybody

I was very surprised to hear that there will be no official 4.4 for Gnex. Anyway, i'm sure that as soon as KiKat source is released, there will be custom compilations for Gnex and Nexus S soon. IMHO just a matter of some days...

According to this blog post from Google (link), it will run comfortably on 512MB RAM devices.
Hope we NS owners can get our teeth on kit kat

no. nexus devices always get updates last :silly:
just kidding, nexus devices always get updates first. sometimes even before(rooted devices) if its available in aosp.
I'm not going to indulge because 4.1 just launched.
Any N7 owner doesn't care about 5.0 at the moment because it's almost guaranteed on newer Nexus devices including the N7 and no features have been announced.
No information = no excitement. More people will care when we hear something.

iphone 5 with ios 6
It will be v5 just because they don't want to get too far adrift in the "my number is bigger than yours" stakes. Unless apple double down on the dumb and try the 'new iphone' route...
My guess, besides more integration with multiple android devices, is an enhanced launcher. Lot's more that could be done, and it gives even more clear blue water between Android and the old fashioned iphone app drawer.
Sort of funny we are already worrying about this, its breaking news these days when some devices are getting ICS!

Same it annoyed me when people were calling JB 5.0. There wasn't that much of a change from ICS.
The version number should only go up if the os is massively different from the previous version. Eg, gingerbread/honeycomb - ice cream sandwich.
Meh, sometimes it's just about grabbing some attention with carefully crafted version numbers. Like when my favorite Linux distro (Slackware) released ver. 13.37
lol at this thread.
Seriously can't begin to imagine what 5.0 would be like. Loving the improvements in JB at the moment.

Android 4.2 "Key Lime Pie" is already in testphase
The new Android version will not be 5.0, it will be 4.2. This version is to be tested, according to server logs already.
The associated device is, according to the sources already leaked. Androidandme believed that it is a variant of the Nexus LG Optimus G.
On the market, the Android 4.2 mobile phone would come before November.

TBH i'm getting a bit fed up with this.
Google need to get everyone on the platform 4.1 and then once the 2.3.4 starts to disappear from users moving to newer devices on 4.1 then introduce 4.2 or 5.0 later
IF this is the case i'll be using whatever ROM is available and I wont be busting a gut to move up as it's becoming most tiresome.
I can't understand everyone moaning about not having Jellybean on the SGS3's. I've been running Jellybean on mine for ages.
After all your on xda forums, try taking control of your life's and your smartphones and flash JB yourselves instead on moaning that you have't got it.
It's a 10 minute job that anyone can do. Simple.
End of rant.

It's not Google's fault cause the OEMS take months to apply theyre custom skins, or that the carriers delay the updates for no apparent reason. They are the ones which have to accelerate this process!
Google needs to innovate, to polish things, to make Android truly the best and most complete mobile operating system. (now that everyone has a smartphone and/or a tablet and the competition is higher than ever)
//If I remember correctly at the Conference where JB was released Google said that they will share the new code with the OEMs months before the announcement of a new version of Android so that they could be prepared with the updates.
From experience
4.2 will not be developed by Uncle Sammy for sgs3 rather it will need to be ported. And by the time google have a stable release of 4.2, Sammy will just about fine tweaked JB in around 4-6 months time.
Edit
Maybe 2-3 months if we are lucky

It's not always the case. I read an article recently about the previous models getting jelly bean, like the tab 7 plus and 7.7. So they got upgraded twice from hc to jb. So it's possible we might be able to taste key lime pie but we'll have to wait again as always. Or just flash like crazy.

You suggest that Google should stop improving upon Android and developing newer versions with innovative new features that keeps Android cutting edge and good competition, and instead focus on coding for SAMSUNG, LG HTC and so forth?
What a fantastic idea! I can hardly believe they haven't thought about this.
Im just curious how different it is from JB. I was thinking of flashing and rooting..but this time ima roll stock. I did the rooting cyanogenmod 7 thing with my old GT5830 (galaxy ace). This is kind of a dream. Google Android is like a base for a soup. Samsung, HTC, etc.. are adding their own recipee to the mix and this is what is ruining the whole thing. Pure Google Nexus is much more beautiful and smooth and trouble free than the ugly Samsung UI.

Hi all,
we have just stopped to wait for the 4.1 Jelly Bean... and there are already some rumors about the 4.2 K release in November.
Do you think we will see an official 4.2 update for our Nexus S?
I'm guessing Key Lime Pie will be announced with the new Nexus phone(s) sometime before the end of this year. If you have a Nexus device then you will get the update eventually. That's the assurance of buying a Nexus phone*.
*Unless you bought a CDMA Nexus.
But really even if the Nexus S is a bit old, it would be a sad to see Google stops supporting it when the hardware is still capable.

I'm going to guess no.. Nexus S is EOL and Google has to stop wasting resources on it sooner or later and I'm going to guess 4.1.1 was just that. Android Police server logs show 4.2 running on Galaxy Nexus, Nexus 7, and two other non-nexus devices. Nothing showing up for Nexus S running 4.2 though.
If this is the case, we can hope the drivers from 4.1.1 will be usable in 4.2.
Sent from my Nexus S using Tapatalk 2
The current Android version for Nexus S (4.1.1) is too much bugged to be the last release. I expect a 4.1.2 or a 4.2 version. Or a Lumia 920.
I'd still like to think that my Nexus S will get the KLP update. After all, 4.2 is not that big an update from 4.1. If however, for some reason Google chooses to drop support for the crespo for that, I won't really blame them as the Crespo has definitely seen better days, and as a veteran for the Android cause, no one can say it hasn't been utilized to its fullest.
Posted using xda mobile app
In my opinion Jelly Bean is, with high probability, the last update we will receive.
Anyway I don't think Google will announce another Android version since the 4.1 was release only 3 months ago!

This is just rumor

Someone's trolling Android Police's server logs. JOO92 is an invalid build number. Build numbers don't go higher than 90. JOO92 would be JOP02. Notice in the Android Police article, they show both JOO92 AND JOP02. Hmmm...sounds like someone realized the build number wasn't right, updated it, and hit the site again. This is total troll material.
Another piece of circumstantial evidence (though it may mean nothing)..."O" is a heretofore unseen branch identifier. We know "R" (like JRO03C, GRJ22, etc) is the release branch. We've also seen T (GTJ61), F (JFN53N), W (HWI69, GWK74), C (ICL53F), M (IML74K), and maybe a few others, but I don't think "O" is one that has been used before. Again, doesn't necessarily mean Google doesn't use it for something, but whatever.
The only point here is that the troll gave himself up with JOO92. Fail. BS.

I think the Nexus S is done, but I'm happy with the two major updates we got (ICS & JB). We've gotta be thankful that the Nexus S/4G got more support over it's lifetime than most manufacturers do with their whole line of phones. :good:
I was just reading through tons of news on portals, and I can't find any info about Nexus S or Galaxy Nexus and 4.2 being rolled out. I mean, Google surely has already decided what to do with us.
I mean honestly, I know Cyanogen or AOKP, or hopefully Rasbean will keep updating my favourite phone ever (really, I have never had a phone this awesome. Pioneer of it's price range and specs!) but I want to know if Google still likes their Nexus S.

Why not

It better! I just bought a used one yesterday!
I think the chances are pretty good that the NS will get 4.2, but beyond that I'm skeptical. We're coming up on the phone's two-year anniversary for one thing. It's also begun to chug a bit with Jelly Bean, and I doubt the next major update will be any less resource intensive. Between the age and the hardware limitations, I suspect we're in the twilight months of Google support for the Nexus S.
must will get 4.2.... not official no problem
this will probably be the last update the Nexus S gets.
Good thing tho, you know most likely that XDA will have some form of port.
I'm getting the Nexus 4 tho!!! my contract is almost up. I might even get it off contract! (AU$400 for 32GB, thats dirt cheap compared to the iPhone 5 which is AU$900! That's less than half the price, for better specs... and android... and build quality is improved dramatically from the previous Nexusesss)
I think it will get 4.2 ... it an incremental upgrade, so anything 'jellybean' we should get
Can't wait to try 4.2

I personally think about a Google "3 letters law" for Nexus devices. Nexus One went from E(Eclair) to G(Gingerbread), passing by Frojo, Nexus S will go from G to J passing by ICS, and GNex will "live" from I to L ... Officially speaking, I mean And, of course, I hope there will always be some clever group (like CyanogenMod, for example) or "one man band" who enjoy to develop ROM or kernel for our preferred devices :fingers-crossed:

You made the right choice .
It remains to be seen if the Nexus S and Xoom will get 4.2 or if 4.1.2 was the last update. We won't know until 4.2 gets released to AOSP. I will say that since they seem to have axed the Honeycomb-style tablet interface from 4.2, the Xoom may be out. As for the Nexus S...historically Google has only maintained support for the current and previous phone generation, which would now be the Nexus 4 and Galaxy Nexus. That said, however, I don't see anything major that would lead me to believe that the Nexus S couldn't run 4.2...unless they tossed out support for capacitive buttons entirely.
Regardless of whether or not there is a stock 4.2 ROM for either device, I'm sure the developers here will have custom ROMs that have it baked in.
