[Q] Is it possible to develop a App with mostly Graphical Interface

Hi Guys,
I am just starting out programming for the Android. I am a proficient Visual Basic and Visual Foxpro programmer.
I ma using Eclipse as my IDE. It it possible to develop an Android App using mostly the Graphical Layout Interface instead of coding in XML? For coding the screen layouts etc.?
I tried finding one, but couldn't find a resource (book or web-based) where all the Controls (Form widgets, text fields, layouts, date picker etc) are listed along with their Properties with proper explanations of these Properties with examples etc.
Thanks in advance.
I'm not sure what you are asking. Do you mean you want to draw the screen directly with lines and pixels, etc (like GDI in windows)? If so, you can derive your own class from "View" and override the onDraw() function and do whatever you want.
Did you look at app inventor? It is ALL graphical. It may, however, be too limited for what you are trying to do.

Eclipse has a gui designer for android.

Yes I did. it was too basic like building blocks..

Yes eclipse has a GUI but its just for drawables mainly to see what it looks like and change position, dpi, colors etc. It helps add the line of code but in eclipse you may want to change the format if using the gui. I like my pages to be clean with annotations it makes life easier
You can also add some objects such as buttons and textview but you really need to know Java if you want to program for android.
FYI .. there is a lot of information on the web if you get stuck. Start with the hello android tutorial and move up the ladder good luck!

Thanks mate. I intend doing just that!

I'd like to know as well. I have a little bit of programming experience, but not much. I don't know anything about Java though.
I'm a beginner in android but I somehow understand what's going on when I try to read tutorials from the developer.android.com because of a little background in java.
Watch this tutorials, it has 87 but you can stop at video 61 because you're not going to need GUI java for android but if you want a good book for Java try Head First Java either way they're both good for beginners. I did both because I really want to learn.
Here's the youtube link
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hl-zzrqQoSE&feature=youtube_gdata_player
After knowing a little basics of Java go ahead for android. Again I'm no way expert but it really helped me a lot understanding android when I learned the basics of Java.

Consolidate top and bottom black bar to bottom in Paranoid Android?

Consolidate top and bottom black bar to bottom in Paranoid Android?
any way to do this? I I was able to in previous version of this.
Thanks!
I believe you are talking about "tablet mode". If you're running the latest beta of Paranoid Android (2.99), then you have to wait a bit. The developers are still working on making it compatible with android 4.2.

Thanks! I never knew what it was called. Makes so much more sense having one bar. It kills me wasting The space now.
Google has officially killed off tablet ui in 4.2, so it may be awhile before we see it successfully implemented into new roms.

There is a patch in the development forum that brings back tablet ui. It is limited on how far you can go with the lcd density. I've only been able to get it to 178. I am used to running at 160, but that setting causes it to flip back to the unified ui. I would like to be able to get back to 160.

Sense Updates in 4.2.2

Lets post up some updates we have found with the Sense 4.2.2 update.
Outside of the primarily known ones like the quick settings here is one great one I noticed.
App: Gallery
Change: Highlights
They revamped the song/style selection for the video highlights as well as added about 5 more. Very very happy with this update as I use this quite often
Sent from my HTC One using Tapatalk 4 Beta
I'd like to know if you can link your ps3 controller via a usb-otg kabel after the update, as this was not supported on the 4.1.2 stock rom.

hey, thanks for reporting this, this is very nice! i've a question, in the gallery app, can you try to open an image go to Edit>Effects then press the 3 dot menu button, and see if there's an option to "Edit effect" i wonder if HTC added this after removing it from an older firmware, thanks!

The remote control app should be improved (seen in a german forum)
You can now set your channels how you want it.

No, you are able to set (for example) bbc on program 3 if its 3 on your receiver/tv.
On 4.1.2 you are not able to customize the order of the programs
They also fixed the select content issue so stuff that you don't want in your zoe is actually not included anymore

There is already a 4.2.2 update thread. Please discuss that there. Having multiple threads makes forum very hard to follow.

[Q] Looking for a ROM with this.

So there is a ROM floating around(http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2463059)
"Lockscreen Notifications - a unique feature implemented by me. Manage your Notifications directly on your lockscreen! It also includes pocketmode and some other very useful features."
Its a custom PA version but the feature I am most interested in is a Stock ROM with just this. I just want the lock screen notifications feature, anyone that can point me to a ROM that is pretty stock but has just this one feature?
I did a quick search and found some apps that do this on their own. Search for lock screen notification and check some of them out.

[APP] Prism Assistant

Over the time of using HTC devices. I came to realize I used Blinkfeed for more of a news app than a Homescreen. Needless to say, finding ways of launching Blinkfeed along side another launcher can be tedious or "Rooty" routes. I found several different ways of launching or creating a shortcut for Blinkfeed in many different fassions. From using Nova launcher gesture actions to exposed module SenseToolbox. Im not a fan of rooting my new high class smartphone so i developed an easier method. This application was first designed for the HTCM7, than updated for the M8 and now revamped for the HTC10.
Prism Assistant is an intelligent shortcut to Blinkfeed or Sense Home. It has a combination of shortcuts allowed to the user for whatever they find easier to view their Blinkfeed to their advantage. Now, Sense Home needs to be installed on your device first for this application to work correctly. If your using a aosp or Cyanogenmod based custom rom, the unofficial port of Blinkfeed will work just as good. Prism Assistant will detect if Sense Home is or not installed and take action to help you.
PA allows the following for HTC10 devices
-Blinkfeed launcher shortcut
-Notification Listener shortcut
-Replace Google On Tap with Blinkfeed
You can grab Prism Assistant on Google Play here for a small fee https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.NxIndustries.Flip
Or
Free load and grab the apk here and wanna give it a test run first https://www.dropbox.com/s/u4qp6d746i9efii/PA-20.0-release.apk?dl=0
^i will update the dropbox version soon for anyone who doesn't have Google play or XDA Labs
Any comments, suggestions, and feedback welcomed.
Custom rom developers are welcomed to PM me for instructions of how to add Home Assist action provider shortcut to Sense Home if they would like the tweak baked in. Giving credit is the only requirement.

One more screenshot...
Bump.
I will be looking into making Prism Assistant a more diverse app soon by giving users a choice to choose what application to set the Home Assistant activity to so its useful to users who also use Blinkfeed.
Have had this app since it 1st came out, Flip, Flick, then Prism Assistant... great work as always

Prism Assistant has recieved one of its final end of life updates this weekend also making the app free to all and ads will appear in the toolbar (very easy to evade) and a minimal material design. Links have been updated and some quirks patched.
Another update will be pushed soon for final patches.
Thankyou for using prism Assistant
