Sending my phone into Samsung - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshootin

Im sending my Galaxy s4 in to Samsung because my vibration motor is faulty. I am rooted and a have custom firmware on it. If i odin back to stock can they still tell its been rooted. Its also unlocked from when you use to be able to do it through the dialer

Make sure to clear the binary using triangle away app before unrooting.
For hardware problems they don't really care whether it's rooted, that's at least what I've been told.

Yes, typically it's not an issue depending on what the physical fault is. For a vibrate motor being faulty, you should be ok. But you could also get that over zealous rep who takes a deeper glance than the rest and declares a voided warranty. To be safe you should continue as you were before sending it.

Chances of MDL being available

So my update is on Sept 1, and I plan on going anywhere I need to in order to find a MDL phone. I NEED my CM10.2! haha:angel:.
What are the chances I'll find one? I know they are getting slimmer by the minute, but I'm thinking maybe some rural Target or BB may have one? I've been trying to get my update anytime I'm near a store, but they all tell me I have to wait for the 1st of the Month. dumbbb.
Or do I wait for Note 3/LG G2/new Sony? (i know, i know, s4 forum...)
Or do I wait for the new iphone, sell it on fleabay/cl, and buy a Google Edition s4?
I dont NEED to update right away... But my skyrocket battery is KILLING me.
AHHH I hate this!
I'm on MF3 and I'm suffering with Touchwiz (I'm a huge fan of AOSP).
I'm pretty sure the Note 3 (from AT&T at least) will have a locked boot loader so it'll be the same situation us MF3 users are in right now.
Since MF3 has been out since July, I'd think that many/most S4's would have it. If you're willing to sell/buy unlocked, go ahead for the Google edition(I personally like black mist much more than white frost, which is what the Google edition comes with. ).

Actually, ask if the employee would be kind enough to let you see the stickers on their boxes. The side of the box shows the firmware revision (on brand new devices only). The employees, nor AT&T would have absolutely no reason to update something in-the-box like that, so this sticker should be accurate. It's the same sticker that includes all the serial numbers/etc.
It may or may not be beneficial to explain that you want a specific version of the firmware, otherwise the employee(s) may get a bit suspicious of a request like this. They may think you are trying to steal IMEI numbers or something stupid.

Not exactly a lie. In the very end, MDL does perform better, because we can flash 'whatever' firmware we want... some of which can perform better.
whatever you do, DONT CONNECT TO THE INTERNET. install through apk's and then go to cm10.2. you can get terminal and the goomanager files, and install w/o internet....
Just ask to check it out before you buy. Most sales persons won't have an issue with it. Find one with MDL baseband and ask them to Leave it in box and that you prefer to set it up yourself
I'm running cm 10.2 on my s4 its so much better than touch wiz and the only feature I miss is the Samsung camera app.
Also I agree don't connect to the internet until after you have rooted and flashed a custom ROM as you can only delay the mf3 update 3 times before it auto installs
Good luck!

I think thats what I'm gonna do. I'll see if I can find a MDL, and if not.... i'll cross that bridge when i get there.

I just picked up a 32GB version yesterday.
It has AMDL firmware. Turned on airplane mode as soon as I could and rooted then renamed the file to prevent an OTA.

good news! Thanks! Is it september 1 yet?
Well, from here on out...ATT released a statement a few weeks ago stating they no longer will be supporting unlocked devices...which means all their smart phones will theoretically have a locked boot loader.
With that said...personally I wouldn't get another device and sell it for the Google edition. As far as I know (correct me if I'm wrong someone) the Google edition does not support touchwiz ROMs, only aosp. However you can get the T-Mobile variant which has an unlocked boot loader and allows you to flash anything from touch wiz to aosp based ROMs to the actual Google edition ROM...plus the T-Mobile supports all the bands that ATT uses so you won't have problems with service

the google edition (i9505G) is theoretically an i9505 running a nexus firmware... you should have no issues running a touchwiz rom made for i9505.
funny thing is when i got mine it was on MDL from at&t about a month and a half ago and it never onced tried to update. then i had to do a factory reset which put me on MDB and i want to go back to MDL. theres an over the air update now that im on MDB but i froze the apk because im scared its the MF3 firmware. i'd love to go back to MDL though is that even possible ?
I seen a little bit of bad information here that I feel I should clear up.
When you first get your device on MDL. Just don't insert the SIM card. You can power it on, and keep wifi completely open. No airplane mode needed. The OTA is pushed through on the AT&T network. If you don't have the SIM in on boot, it will not pull the update. The reason behind this is that the Phone verifies the network you are connected to. It can't verify AT&T without the SIM.
The only way you could possibly get the update without the SIM in is if you turn the phone on with the activated SIM, at this point it calls for the update. When on WiFi, it downloads it. So as soon as it calls for the update, you then need to remove required items to stop it. Even if you pull the SIM it will continue the download. So just don't turn it on with the SIM in it. I know this from personal experience and reading the Forums.

Thanks for the clear up! I was under the impression it would download as soon as i was connected to wifi.
Thanks again!:good:
Even if it downloads you don't have to install it. You can always disable the apps that prompt you to update.
I was in the same boat, being ready to upgrade after MF3 was released.
I spent the last two days checking 7 different ATT stores in the Los Angeles area for a 16GB S4 with the MDL firmware, unfortunately they had all been sold or replaced with the newer update. I was lucky to find one store that still had a 32GB version with MDL. I really dont need the extra 16GB, especially for an extra $50, but as long as i can Loki the damn thing Im happy. You might have to look for a 32GB version if you want a chance to find one as these do not sell anywhere near as frequently as the 16GB model.
Just do not put the SIM in until you block the OTA packages.

The above quote is inaccurate. I purchased a used MDL S4 during the last week of August. For the first few days, I did not activate the SIM. However, whenever I turned on Wi-Fi, the update would start to download immediately.
Short story: I placed the su binary and su app on the root of the internal sd card via Samsung Kies, ran CASUAL to root the phone and install twrp, downloaded Quick Terminal via my desktop, placed Quick Terminal on the phone via Kies, installed it, then used Quick Terminal to disable the three apps causing the OTA update as well as delete the fragment of the update that downloaded via Wi-Fi. (I posted the commands in the loki, motochopper thread.)
After doing this, I activated the SIM and didn't have to rush to find a ROM since OTA was disabled.

Just got back from upgrading to the S4. I asked the clerk to look for a MDB or MDL and lo and behold he walked out from the back with a Black Mist 16GB MDL in his hand. Damn am I glad. :good:

Is it worth rooting the GN3?

I have always rooted my Android phones since the GN1. However, with the new KNOX, is it still quite easy, safe and worth rooting the GN3?

got my note 1 at the release week without warranty. rooted it, flashed with custom roms, droped it, even spoiled water on it but nothing was happened never needed a warranty. but nobody knows... everything might gone opposite way too. what i will do is get my note 3 use it for 1 or 2 months to be %99 sure that there is no faulty hardware on it and then hope for a luck and root it.
Yes.
But if you don't miss it, then don't bother voiding your warranty

Never needed to use my warranty on any device.
I always use my device for a week to see if there are any problems with the device, as with electronics if there are any problems going to develop they are likely to do so straight away.
If you decide to root, some people have had luck with samsung's warranties even with root. Depending what it is.
If the screen fails, it is likely not because of root, but if the the soc fails, they can easily blame that on the root.
Up to you, I have always rooted mine after the first week.
I have never had a phone that was not rooted until now. So far I have had no urge to root my Note 3 and the only thing I feel I am missing out on is Greenify but that doesnt bother me since battery life is so much better than my old Galaxy S2.

Deciding whether or not to upgrade to 4.3?

I'm one of the guys impatiently waiting on Samsung to stop being Apple, and patiently waiting on our devs to crack the MF3 build number.
My question is, whether to upgrade to MJ6 or stay on MF3. I don't know if MJ6 holds any hope of unlocking the bootloader any sooner than MF3 does.
Anyone have a clue?
I'm guessing mj6 will be locked tighter than mf3. At least you have safestrap on mf3. I'd wait and see what happens, mj6 isn't going to be that much better than mf3 anyway.

I have zero intentions of getting Samsung Smartgear, mostly cause I don't see too much use in spending 250 bucks on an item I won't be able to use effectively anyway. So MJ6 is pretty much useless to me.
MJ6 is either going to be locked down tighter, or Samsung has actually listened to their customers and unlocked the bootloaders. I know there are a LOT of disappointed customers who bought the S4 cause it was supposed to be an open ended, high end flagship device, and ended up being locked down as bad as iPhones.

4.3 is going to bring KNOX to our devices. Which could probably further hinder the unlock process. Note 3 has KNOX and i dont follow their forums to much so i dont know if they have had any success yet. I am on MF3 as well, and yet to root. If i was to root, I would be for the MJ6 modem. And use Safestrap with 4.3 roms. But I will probably upgrade because I dont use to many ROOT benefits to do it. I just want the 4.3 upgrade. So i will be sticking with official upgrades, but knowing att, I think 4.3 will be the last update this device will see.
I would probably move onto the S5 Google Edition, or Nexus 5

I would lvoe to move on to the Nexus 5, as the S5 probably won't be much better. The Nexus 5 has almost identical specs to the S4,my only problem is that I've spent 80 bucks on a lifeproof case for this S4. And I enjoy the lifeproof brand. They don't make anything for Nexus devices though, sadly.
If this whole boot loader lock is a sign of things to come than I may start looking elsewhere. Having a "jailed" phone is the reason I left apple in the first place. Idk, maybe I'll pick up the nexus 5...wondering if buying one will be as bad as the 4 was.

2300 mAh isn't bad. The S4 has 2600 and uses a MUUUCCCHH more battery draining operating system. My S3, running cyanogenmod would run all day on moderate use and I'd go to bed with 50% battery life left. And the S3 had the same 2300 mAh battery.
The removable storage for me is the big deal. And it's a tradeoff of between dealing with touchcrap UI and all it's bloatware and battery killing software, or trading a bit of storage for a MUCH better operating system and more open ended device. I just with they had released the enxus 5 in a 64gb model. If i could get a 64 GB HTC One for my Galaxy S4 I'd be happy.
Upgrade to 4.4, because mf3 is the worst baseband for rooting devices.

The locked bootloader hasn't been a deal breaker for me. Being able to root and use xposed framework lets me setup my phone the way I want and like it. I was wanting recovery options, but now that we have the Odin files to restore MF3 on our phone I'm not concerned with that anymore. Debloating and apps like Titanium, Tasker, Zooper, "Minimalistic Text" have all the options I need and want on my phone. I would like to develop another Rom, but it's ok as work keeps me rather busy anyways.

that's porbably the biggest difference between me and you.removable batteries don't bother me much. SD card space, meh. I have a laptop, I have an iPod. All I REALLY need storage for is my favorite songs, a couple videos, and apps.
What matters to me is the ability to customize. I'm thinking about the Nexus 5 right now. Just posted a thread in the Nexus 5 forums tog et opinions between it and the S4.

Should i root my Note 4?

My main reason not rooting it yet was that i was thinking to sell it to get a Note 5.. but after the show yesterday i am dissapointed i think i dont want to move on to the Note 5 because of the non sd card slot and non removable battery , design and obviously no big difference its the same sh##t as the s6...
I am little bit afraid because my old S3 one day suddenly stopped working and the motherboard was burned, but i have flashed many roms etc ... i dont wanna flash any roms in my Note 4 .
soooooooooo.......Should i root it now?
or is there any other phone that i can buy with simillar features? i really want the fingerprint scanner from the s6
OK to root but avoid playing with your CPU/GPU voltages and overclocking to avoid repeat of what happened to your S3.
For me, rooting is essential as I like installing mods.
You just have to live with tripped knox counter.

I keep think about rooting mine if for any other reason to stop damn ads! I think the back up options are better (Titanium) but apart from that you cant get around most shortcomings via other means. The other reason and the main one I didn't is that skygo doesn't work if rooted.
I can live with my Note 4 until the LG G4 pro comes out Sept/Oct time....I'm bored of it but nothing better is available and like you, the note 5 isn't an upgrade to waste a ton of money on!
I just shifted a load of apps to sd and it seems a tad slicker. Also stopped a few apps I don't use.

I'm in your same situation, but I have decided not to root it until the warranty is expired, or I have resold it anyway (assuming something better appears for me). I rooted the previous Note after the warranty expired, and I might do the same for this one as well if I don't get any new phone in the meantime and resell this.

Not sure about private mode, but if you just root you should receive the OTA updates (though you'll have to re-root after every update).
When you first root the efuse is physically triggered, after which the only way to reset back to 0 is to go to the Samsung center and make them change it (unsure if they have to change the whole electronic board or they resolder a new efuse on the board).
Issue is, for Enterprise customers they change it for $10 a phone, but as far as I know they don't do this for end users, and if they do it would cost way more and the warranty on the phone would be permanently invalidated.
Oh, one warning: if you have Knox Security enabled DO NOT ROOT before you disable it. You'll find yourself with a brick.
No, No, and NO.
Knox can not be 0x0 ever again.
Read about it here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Samsung_Knox
As far as the OTA goes, I think you will be able to get it (as long as you don't have custom recovery installed) I think this is the case.. But then again, I am not sure about it..
I personally, do root all of my phones. The main thing is to install addaway to get rid of anoying adds.
If the motherboard dies, there is no way to know that the knox was tripped..

S7edge device status says custom but has NEVER been rooted or flashed

My S7edge has been saying that it is custom under device status. I have never flashed a row more rooted my phone. My Knox counter has never been tripped. I've seen that there was a similar issue that bigbad614 had commented on a few months back. My carrier is T Mobile. I have tried contacting Samsung a few times T Mobile a few times and have also gone to Best Buy. All of them had pretty much no idea what I was talking about. I cannot receive any security updates because my phone says that it has been modified in an un authorized way... Which it hasn't been. I am very desperate with this situation and could really use the help to get my S7edge back to official status. This has really been a very big problem with no resolution insight thank you... Keith G

Keith G

If you don't want to do it yourself though Odin just take it to best buy to the Samsung department and have them flash the stock firmware for you. They have all you need and its free.

Are you using a different launcher? I ran into this issue when I first got my s7 Edge. After awhile it stopped telling me in an unauthorized way. I'm using Nova Prime, stock never been rooted, and received the last update just fine.

If you go to the rooting guide......it has everything you need to restore to stock. Sammobile website requires you to register though but the stock systems are there.
Please keep in mind....right now you can't downgrade so make sure to download the right system. It takes hours to download....... Sammobile is slow but works.

by any chance are using package dissabler pro it does that if you block 1 certain app can recall which one but it does i had to un freeze all the apps then do 1 by 1 until i finally didn't have the custom status others had luck after freezing the apps then do a cache clean you know in boot mode then that would clear it up once again that's if you are using package dissabler pro.
Most likely your phone is custom as people return their phones that way and they gave it right to you most reps don't know the difference
