Model number: HTC Desire A8181 (According to abaaaabbbb63 it's a HTC HD2, with a ROM ported from the Desire)
Firmware version: 2.2
Baseband version: 15.39.50.07U_2.10.50.26
Kernel version: 2.6.32.15-g66f6ed7-dirty
[email protected] #2
Build number: 2.29.405.5 CL293415 release-keys
Software number: 2.29.405.5
Browser version: WebKit 3.1
I recently acquired a HTC Desire A8181 from a friend yesterday. It was his, so he of course did a Factory Reset under the Settings option, thinking everything was deleted he gave it to me. Well nothing got deleted, not the messages, Google account, apps he's installed, nothing except the contacts. So naturally, I manually deleted all the apps it let me and messages, along with adjusting some settings to my liking.
Well now my problem is his Google account won't delete no matter how many times I've Factory Reset the phone (6 times now), and even when I go to 'Accounts & Sync' to remove account it says I need to Factory Reset the phone because it's required by some applications, but that does nothing at all.
So then I look up how to go into Recovery Mode by holding the Volume Down button and turn the phone on, well it doesn't go into Recovery Mode, all it does is give me a screen that's 1/4 Red, 1/4 Green, 1/4 Blue, and 1/4 White with numbers and letters on the screen. I can't do anything except take the battery to get off that screen.
All I want is for the phone to be like when it first was taken out of the box. I want to feel stupid when the first screen that comes up is how to use the phone, and set up a Google account for the phone. I mean, I can't even get into the Play Store. If you need more information, just ask me and I'll provide it.
What bootloader are you using? (When you boot up the phone, do you see aMagldr written at the top then android boots, or you see nothing but the boot animation?)
If the former, hold down the END key, then go to "AD recovery" (using volume keys and CALL key to confirm), then go into factory reset.
If the latter, depending on the version, we need to know which version you have. Hold down the BACK key when booting up the device and tell us what you see (exactly as it appears).

It says aMAGDLR V1.11, when I boot up holding the BACK key, it doesn't do anything either.

I told you if you have MAGLDR, hold the END key while booting, then follow what I said earlier.
Edit:
Oh yeah, I totally forgot about that. Thanks for reminding me. @op I'm sorry for the wrong info, never mind my posts, just follow what Nigel's said.

I don't think MAGLDR 1.11 supports custom recoveries so he can't do that. OP, just consult the guide in my sig and use it to flash MAGLDR 1.13, CWM and a custom ROM. None of your friend's data will remain on the device.
Thank you to the both of you guys. I honestly had no idea phones could be hacked. Looking around these forums (and using your sig) I finally flashed it back to Window's 6.5 with no data remaining from my friend. Appreciate the help, I pushed thanks for the both of you guys.

Restored my blackstone this morning to a back up from the start of the month.
the phone came back on after the restart but displayed a "phone task could not be started" message bubble.
couple more restarts which resulted in a similiar result and now i'm in the position where i just get the smart mobility screen and nothing happens.
so the only real answer is to reset to factory settings and then restore my back up again.
question is how ? the phone is off at the moment - i've searched XDA and come up with holding the power button then pressing the volume controls up and down then letting go of the power button ?
is this correct ? doesn't seem to do much.
EDIT : done the hard reset now. sat on the windows mobile screen saying "preparing your device for use for the first time" now. can't remember how long this took first time round.
EDIT : Now i'm looking at the Red, green, blue and white bar screen. with the following text across the top
BLAC100 32M
SPL - 1.14.0000
MicroP-Blackstone (LED) V6. its sat at this screen for about a minute so far. what happens next ?>
hopefully i can get this back and not have to shell out for a new phone.
thanks in advance.

Correct procedure to restore factory settings or hard reset
1. Turn off device (Obviously yours is already off)
2. Hold down vol up & vol down and then turn on device (continue to hold down vol up & vol down)
3. Screen will go to bootloader temporaily then you'll be presented with a message blah blah blah etc
4. Press vol up to hard reset
Thanks for the info. heading back to the horrible world of default settings.
is now a good time to flash the firmware with dutty's ROM ?
Depends on which Duttys you want to get to:
If you want to go to V2.6 or earlier Hard SPL is fine
If you want to get to V2.8 you will need USPL
There is more steps required as it depends on what rom you have on phone as hard resetting will not return you to stock rom, it will return you to factory settings of rom you had flashed to previous
More info can be found on post#6 of Duttys thread
Just read your first post again. You said you restored your phone to a previous backup of a month ago
For this to work properly you would have needed the rom on your phone of which you backed up
i.e. if you had Duttys 2.1 on last month and backed it up, you would need Duttys v2.1 on again before doing a full restore. If it was only PIM info (contacts/emails etc it would be ok).
This may have been where your problem was. If you tried to do a full restore while running Duttys V2.6 or Laurentius rom or any other etc the restore would probably have affected your phone
Just to clarify. I haven't flashed my ROM since getting the phone in Nov. so it's back to the original ROM that it came with. my restore this morning was to to the original ROM as well. Obviously if i flash the original ROM with dutty's the backups i have got already will be no use at all.
hmmmmmmm.
might just try another back up restore and see if i can get back to where i was this morning.
thanks for your help mate.
cheers
matt.
let us know how you get on
well
after a lot of toing and froing, my sprite back up from earlier this month has restored the blackstone successfully. thanks very much mater for digging me out of a massive hole earlier. saved the day.
i think i'll leave it where it is for now. flashing the ROM further means i'll have to re-install all the 3rd party apps i've installed.
thanks again.
as long as you can get to the bootloader it is never bricked
Hy.
I have some questions regarding updating from microSD card.
I've done HSPL (thanks jockey) and now I would like to flash new rom. Being cautious, i've also backed up my original rom, downloaded stock...
I then copied my backup which includes radio, os, splash and spl using htc rom tool, placed it at root of microsd and renamed to PB74IMG.nbh.
When booted into bootloader mode passing tri-colour screen i get white screen with blue letters saying
Loading..."
Click to collapse
then
"Checking..."
Click to collapse
and then:
PB74IMG.nbh -
BOOTLOADER -
SPLASH -
RADIO_V2 -
OS -
Press power button to start update image
Press action button to cancel update image
Click to collapse
The problem is that those dashes are confusing me a bit. Looks like something should be there, ie. versions or such, and there is no "action" button, ie. I've tried pressing everything except power button but nothing happend, no message, no reboot, it stayed on above-quoted screen.
Does anybody have some experience with this kind of updating?
Can I brick the device beyond repair? Since my backup contains all system files including spl, if something goes wrong can it be repaired without original/working spl/hspl? Can IPL be used (or any method)?
Hope that someone can help.
Thanx.
Hi
I have flashed my ROM multiple times using this technique.
IF you HardSPL'd your phone, there won't be any trouble.
Good luck!
Thanks for reply. I've figured it out along the way. And just in case someone stumbles upon something similiar: those dashes are separators for status info. Depending what is beeing flashed, some or all of lines (PB74IMG.nbh - , Bootloader -, OS - , etc.) will be displayed and upon succesfull flash it will append "OK", ie., OS - OK. Don't know what happens when it fails, have done it only once and it worked , lucky me.
But I still do not understand why other keys, that are supose to cancel operation, do not work.
Hi
A friend of mine has a HD2, never HSPL or anything and still running on 1.42 rom.... Now everytime it boots it goes straight into the bootloader. Since its never been messed around with I find it odd, seen it before with people with other phones. Would this just be a corrupted ROM and therefore it goes there, would if poss a stock rom flash be able to restore the phone, if that is not the case then a warranty return is still valid, but obv not wanted.
What do you think, will this work? I did search but everyone's posts come up with I task 29 and now stuck... etc and not from a stock bootloader as well!
Cheers any help will be appreciated, my first thing I will get him to try is a rom reflash but that will be tonight, I'll update on the progress then!
First thing I would check is if his volume button is stuck for some reason. Second would be to see if it detects a USB connection, then hard spl and new rom from that point. Keep us posted.

The post above me is correct check and make sure the volume down button is not stuck/Hung in the down position. If it is stuck in the down position like it is being held down at boot then this is the cause of it going straight to bootloader at boot up. If there is no problem with the volume down button then try a hard reset of the HD2. Warning this will reset your friends HD2 tolike it was fresh out the box so any photos, videos, documents, and etc that is not on the SD card they will lose. Also any contacts that are not backed up withan app like Microsoft My Phone will be lost. To do the reset while the HD2 is off bold the volume up and the volume down buttons down and press and bold the power button down. When you see the tri color screen come up release the volume and power buttons and follow the instructions on the screen (hint: you will want to press the vume up button). Now if after the Hard reset your friends HD2 still goes to bootloader at boot up then download and flash the stock ROM for their HD2 you can find it on HTC.com but make sure you varifiy that it is for their HD2 by entering the serial number of their HD2 you can find the serial number look under the battery. To flash the ROM let the HD2 boot up to the bootloader and then connect it to the computer via USB cable and wait for the Serial in the white bar of the boooader screen to change to USB and for your computer to show it recognize the pbone and then run the .exe or RUU wich everone the ROM has.
Never thought of the key being held done will try that first.
Also I won't HSPL'ing as its in warranty and a half HSPL'ed phone is well useless
OK so i feel like a bit of an idiot for this one. Turns out what I call a bootloader and he does is totally different. For me Its the tri-colour screen, for him its the red/orange windows boot screen. So it was all solved by a HR. Great..
Sorry for those who offered the advice but it really was not needed. but solid advice it was, you always can rely on help in here
Forgive me for probably relatively simple questions, but my last involvement on here was the development of WM5 for the HTC Blue Angel! So quite some years ago...
I've found a wildfire in the local park a fortnight or so ago. I tried to make an attempt to find its owner, but the device is locked out (asking for email/password) and there is no SD card or SIM card in it (Guessing someone "obtained" it one way or another, couldn't get into it and threw it away). Anyway, long story short - Police aren't interested, Virgin say the phones likely already been disabled and there's nothing they can do with it - so thats left me with it.
Now when I power it up, it goes straight to a screen that has FASTBOOT highlighted in red. This menu key info shows:
S-ON
HBOOT-1.01.0002
RADIO-3.35.20.10
Dec 27 2010, 17:49:10
The power button and volume down buttons don't respond. Tried to do a hard reset, but the buttons don't respond on the other screen either.
Tried to flash with a WWE RUU. It would fail due to Customer ID error but the phone would subsequently boot to the locked screen again. Managed to create a Goldcard (using my Blue Angel none-the-less!) and now RUUs fail due to a bootloader error I think it is.
When running RUU, the version the device is running is: 2.39.775.1
The highest RUU i've found is: RUU_Buzz_Froyo_HTC_WWE_2.22.405.1_Radio_13.55.55.24H_3.35.20.10_release_160191_signed
It seems a shame to just throw the phone in the bin, but I'm now at a loss what to do.
I've guessed the phones on Virgin, as putting that sim card in when the phone is on the lock screen rather than the white one it shows a different message to any other sim card. I can't find a Virgin RUU though if that would help.
HBoot seems to be the newest one, it is not possible to use Unrevoked to unlock the bootloader, so you either wait till Unrevoked releases a new version with a new exploit, or you find someone with a XTC-clip to S-off your HBoot. (or you buy it yourself)
I thought as much.
Is there no way to be able to get the hard reset to work - just to get the device remotely usable?
First take out SIM and memorycard,
1.Switch off phone by removing battery and put battery back in
2.hold the volume down button and press the power on button briefly, with the volume down button held
3.you will now get a screen approx 10 seconds later and with a few options, go to hard reset/factory reset
4.follow options through, this will reset phone to factory settings.
Post if it works or not
h4oxer: I could get to that menu, but there was no response from the buttons. I couldn't change the menu option highlighted, nor did the power button execute what was already highlighted.
By placing a PC49IMG and a rom on the memory card and then booting to that menu, it enabled those options to be selected. I couldn't flash the rom, but I have now managed to perform a hard reset. Now it boots up ok, but when I go to power off, the next time I power on it's going back to the fastboot (highlighted red) screen. I'm running any RUU update to kick it out of fastboot back into the actual OS.
Hi guys i just bought a hd2 used (euro) and it wont let me delete the google account
It is running Ultimate droid 2.5.0 on 2.2.1 android
Here is what ive tried :
Factory reset
hard reset (using both col keys)
reseting all app data
I would reload another version of android but i don't know how to
Thanks for all the help
First post woohooo
Have you tried overwriting it with your google mail account? its advised to have one for the phone security
I've signed in with my own account but it dosent replace it pt anything it still asks for the original owners password which I don't have -_-
Depending on the bootloader... If Magldr you can check if recovery (clockwork) was installed.. If so you can just press and hold the power key to enter MAGLDR then to AD Recovery from there you can load a new Android zip and install or do a factory install .. I'm not familiar with Clk but either way go to the Android nand section and there you will find tutorials and much more helpful stuff then the general section

......... I have no idea what that is but when I press end it says reboot to recovery

Whennyou turn on the phone the first screen you see should be HTC or some other image (boot screen) after that the bootloader is shown... In mot cases its magladr or a black screen with MAGLDR at the top then Android is started up... So to get into the bootloader or magldr when you statup the phone press and hold the power button to stop Android from starting and send you into the bootloader menu

I was having the same issues, the account of the old user couldnt be reset. And reset from factory from bot or directly from the menus were not working. But with the bootloader it works.
Thank you so much!
I have inherited an HD2 and don't seem to be able to remove the main google account from it. I have done a hard reset in MAGLDR 1.1, then upgraded to MAGLDR 1.3 and tried again, but to no avail - the account remains, meaning no Market for me.
Does anyone have any ideas where to go from here?
If I stick a new ROM on it will that work? (there is nothing on the phone that I want to keep).
