I've tried a few different music apps to play music off my flashdrive through otg but they don't register. My flashdrive is mounted.
Nevermind, flashdrive wat formatted to exFat and I swapped it over to the FAT32 and it works now

I previously had a Moto Droid and was able to connect it to my USB port in my car and play media "Music" from the sdcard. Now with my Incredible it tell me media cannot be played or read. I believe this is because of the dual mounting when connected it tries to mount two storages at once. Anyone else having this problem or maybe and solutions to fix this???

mine kind of did the same thing, I put my songs on the internal memory and my pioneer wouldn't find the songs, I had to put all my music on the micro sd card and it worked fine after that. not sure if that would work for you or not but it worked for me, so if you haven't tried that yet it is worth a shot.
i have actually tried both and still no luck. I even tried removing SDcard and had Music on internal storage only and still a no go. But it seems to read the sdcard momentarily and seconds after it says media cannot be played.
All my media is on the sd card. No problems with playing via USB/AUX connections in my vehicle...
finally figured it out. for some reason I had to give my friend my sdcard and had him format it in his nexus one. then put music back on it and this time it was able to read the media. finally

This is really getting annoying. Any MP3/Vide files which I transfer through USB Mass Storage are not detected when it goes "Scanning for Media". It works through Kies and Webharing Wifi Transfer app...until I reboot the phone, then its detected in the music player anymore.
If I use the file browser or astro i can play it through them, but that's not really convenient is it.
Everything works fine if I transfer it through an external SD card. I only have a 2gb one though so it really doesn't cut it.
HELP
I am facing the same problem using CM7 nightly
Help is much appreciated.
No problem here straight USB transfer of files to folder on external sd card named songs .
jje

Does you external HDD have it's own power? I would expect the Nexus 7 to not be able to power a physical hdd vs a usb flash drive.

have that mate,i'm going to format everything then try again lol
If your external hdd is formatted NTFS, you will need a custom kernel. Or reformat the hdd to FAT32.
Anyone know the max size of drive attached to MXPE USB OTG?
I verified an old 320GB FAT32 2.5" external USB 2.0 drive works.
However, a new 2TB FAT32 2.5" external USB 3.0 drive does not work. It crashes the phone hard to a self-inflicted reboot every time it starts to mount it.
Both drives "mount" OK to a WinXP system. Both drives have enough extra power through a Y-cable and/or powered USB hub when connected to the phone, so power is not the problem. Both drives were partitioned and formatted to FAT32 using GParted (on Parted Magic boot CD).
Update on power: Newer 2.5" external drives don't need additional power using Y-cable or powered hub.
Any info would be appreciated.
Here I go again, replying to my own queries on XDA Developer.
The phone will happily mount the 2 TB drive formatted to exFAT. And no external power needed either - the phone has enough power to run it with just an OTG cable.
The first attempt using GParted to partition and format the drive to exFAT did not work to get the phone to mount it. Not sure why.
However, using Windows XP command (DOS -like) shell to format it to exFAT worked, with the /FS:exFAT and /Q parameters. Had to install the WinXP patch to add exFAT support too.
Now, time to fill this sucker up.
Why would you need 2 Tb connected to a phone anyway ?

Streaming is OK for convenience, but quality is only so-so, and sometimes there is no available network connection sufficient to stream.
This phone has outstanding audio quality (with Audio Effects OFF), it really comes out with lossless audio like FLAC. High quality video and lossless audio files take a lot of storage. 50-something GB on phone plus 128 GB mSD card are not enough by themselves for the amount of media I have. A 2 TB drive to carry along for USB OTG provides a workaround, I can put my ENTIRE audio and video library on it and it will always be available in lossless quality wherever I am.
I wouldn't run the OTG drive to listen/watch directly, that uses too much power. Use it to copy on to phone them unmount.
