[Q] Phone update while rooted? - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey, i found out that a person on a norwegian forum could software update his galaxy s2 while rooted without problems, can galaxy s4 do the same?
Cause i remember when i had HOX i couldnt update at all, i just got installation failure when i tried to.
So can S4 update while rooted? Or will it too be unable to update?

[B]NOTE[/B]:
I've prepared a special package for all who are using ODEX version (ORIGINAL) and decided to try DEODEX instead...
You need to install Custom Recovery first and then flash ZIP from SD card:
"DEODEXED Apps+Framework" package (THIS IS NOT ROM!!!) - CWM flashable - Downloads: [URL="http://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=23050663588004312"]<<< Android Host >>>[/URL]
- With this rom you will get both your phone rooted and updated and adding to that you will have full Kies & OTA update and your phone status will remain Offical.
- Your phone data won't be wiped ( if you want to wipe, boot in recovery and do a wipe data/cache before and after flash)
- If you don't know what is DEODEX ? Well, to simplify it : it allows you to modifiy your phone apperence.
This rom is not DEODEXED, if you want to DEXODEX it Read the NOTE

So that thing will temporary fake disable root to make the android think it's not rootet and do a successfull update?
And regarding this photo:

Can you elaborate a little more?
Just got my I9505 (international unlocked) a little while ago. Turned it on and updated (OTA) until no more update. Rooted (using ODIN) and install OTA root keeper. Will I receive OTA update notification when there is one and will I be able to update safely?
Thank you much.

1) Is there any good reason, why i should upgrade my tab.?
2) My tab is rootet with z4root app, and think i will loose my root if i upgrade. ?
THx in advance.
if you havent already moved to the JMI firmware from one of the chefs, you dont need this update. Stay away from it as it may contain a locked bootloader. just go to the tab android dev forum and install any one of the JMI packages.
not exactly sure what version i got on my phone.
Havent installed any custom rom/kernels
here what its says
current version PDA:JJ3 / PHONE:JID / CSC:JJ2 (NEE)
Wants to install PDA:JMI / PHONE:JMA / CSC:JM4 (NEE)
Pretty novice on this forum, so dont know whats it all means.
have tried to figure out what version of tab i got, gsm or CDMA, and what rom/ kernels i could install.
The galaxy tab department in xda forum is a little konfusing to find info.
Maybe somebody have the answers what all this means.
and yes have tryed the search button many times.

Well , you are from Scandinavia. Sweden or something lijke that.. But you willhave the GSM-Tab. If you like the tab as it is, just do the upgrade. If you want to root and flash custom roms like i.e. the Roto-hammer. You need to root and flash those. The latest build is JMI. The custom-roms are already based on the JMI. In the development-topic are very good guides howto.
Thx for reply
Will try out flashing with odin, just came from Htc desire so its a little different system, flashing tab, hope there will come an recovery rom out so it will be more easyer installing new roms.
Ps not far from sweden . Im Danish, but bought tab in Norway
2) My tab is rootet with z4root app, and think i will loose my root if i upgrade. ?
FWIW, I accepted the Sprint OTA update last week and 1.) lost root, 2.) haven't been able to get it back with Z4Root. If I can ever get it back, I'll stay away from any future updates from the provider.
I had a look at the Roto JMI thread and it seems his version has some problems with the english dictionary. I wonder if these issues are fixed in the version offered by Kies. I really would like to keep my root access, but I need a rom which is as stable as possible because I need my tab for work.
At the moment I am still using the last official version which was offered by Kies (PK5?). I'm unsure if I should flash roto's rom or the new Kies version. What do you think guys?

after installing this latest firmware if you install any previous firmware you won't get network, i myself have experienced this.
You cant roll back unless you keep an mg* baseband - which Involves flashing one

This confirms that the BTU ROM is not the only ROM which changes the EFS partition format. All roms released after 16 July 2013 changes the EFS partition format which can be read by new modems only.

Download and Open terminal emulator from Play store .... type these code and it would tell you what is your bootloader. if u lucky enough with MDB/MDL then u just install any custom 4.3 or even 4.4 kitkat rom.
Code:
su
Code:
getprop ro.bootloader

So you just have to look for roms compatible with your build. Do not flash KitKat roms unless they are rooted.

[Q] Downgrading

Hi guys I'm kinda new here and a beginner in flashing but anyway I need some help i have a Samsung s4 gt-i9505 and just as 4.4.2 kitkat came out I wished to upgrade due to Australia was one of the last countries to receive the update so I flashed my firmware to
Some thing else to get the new firmware which I thinks German anyway Australia has caught up with the world now and I wish to go back to Australian firmware but unsure of how to do so I have downloaded Australian 4.3 telstra firmware as I can't seem to find a 4.4.2 Australian firmware to download so my question is how do I go about downgrading to 4.3 from a up to date 4.4.2 firmware with Odin? Please remember that I'm kinda new to this and also I've attached a screen shot with my current version

You don't need and can't downgrade. If you received OTA (Over the air) update and ur phone updated to GN5 means that ur phone isnt Australian, it's german. You can know it better doing this steps:
1. Install Kies 3 and it will give u the CSC (device code zone) like in pic attached.
2. Take a look the CODE of 3 letters in this page for check the country of your device -> HERE
3. Done
*EDIT: The latest firmware update for i9505 is I9505XXUGNF1 if you own a german phone (DBT).
