Let's calibrate stock 4.3 kernel - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

can some one calibrate the color values on the stock 4.3 kernel or if someone could provide a DIY guide...plzzz i would really love to use 4.3 if it wasn't for the washed out colors. oh and i don't wanna use any apps or script to do the trick...

Stock kernel doesn't support gamma/color configuration.
You must install a custom kernel and use an app to calibrate the colors.

Lol..I thought Moles created a new thread for 4.3...There was a thread with the same name for 4.2 as well

colours on 4.3 are nice imo, could never stand halfbreed super over contrast ones myself
.just saying

I was a big fan of Halfbreed..Flashed Faux kernel & jumped to Halfbreed right away..Dont know why but But surprisingly i did not like it..Stock colors are so good..Perfectly Balance & Bright as well

Just got one.

First of all, the DPI is kind of lame, I had a G2X, which is supposed to be the same resolution but NOT as good of screen as the Nexus...oh well.
Anyway, cannot root, followed a certain procedure:
http://www.androidauthority.com/nexus-s-4g-root-one-click-55874/
I'm not a noob by any means, but for some reason with Root Checker, says im not rooted...even tho I was able to get to CWM via the .bat file included in the above procedure. Not too sure what's going on.
This Nexus has the OTA ICS installed already.
Any suggestions on the fastest, most stable, battery proficient ICS ROM at the moment? Custom kernel or pre-packaged with whatever ROM?
I came over from the G2X, but this device has far more options.
Best kernel (IMO) would be Matr1x, v20-21.5 aren't very stable releases but 19.5 and the latest (22) are stable. As for ROMs, you'll just have to try some of them out. Most popular are AOKP, CM9, MIUI and one of my favorites, PARANOIDANDROID. Alternate kernels would be Air and Trinity. Trinity is really cool if you like deep rich colors as opposed to voodoo colors on Matr1x and Air. But my experience with battery life on Trinity hasn't been too well. I've also tried Air, but at the time, it was extremely buggy. I haven't touched it since. Honestly, it all depends on how your phone plays with the kernel/ROM combinations. Visit some of the threads in the Nexus S 4G development section. Read around. As for my set up. I'm running AOKP build 40 with Matr1x v22 800/200 lazy (screen on) and 400/200 wheatley (screen off) depending on your phone use, you can get up to a maximum of about a day and a half. But that's very minimal use. Average would probably be about 10-12 hours with 3-5 hours screen on time. (Data off I presume). That's just my two cents.

Oh, well my bad. Luckily, everything I've said still applies to both crespo and crespo4g. As for CWM and rooting for the Nexus S. I wouldn't know.. I'm guessing its just a flashable zip file..? I've been rooted for about a year now, so I've honestly forgot. Sorry I can't be of much help.

Flash it and boot directly into it from the boot loader.
If you're still on stock, every time you boot up it will be replaced by stock recovery. You can remove that script with root access. Or if you flash a custom rom right off the bat it will stick
when i got my nexus s i flashed like 20 roms + matr1x kernel (because everybody recommends it, i don't know why). then i found out that matr1x is UV by default and that's the reason why i got random reboots with every rom. so unless you're a flashoholic and like backing up and restoring, i might be able to save you some time. flash cm9 and use it with stock kernel. good battery life and the most reliable rom so far. if you like flashing, just keep in mind that UV, OC and deep idle can make your phone reboot. so if you find out your phone can't handle the bloat, stick with cm or other stockish kernels like simple kernel.

No,
Problem was that I was using a tutorial based on the Nexus S 4g from Sprint. The tutorial said it was good for the Nexus S also, but it wasn't. I found another tutorial from the same site that hosted the 4g one and everything is good to go.
Right now I'm already rooted and running Trinity with a different ROM.
I recommend Air Kenrel. It's very stable and battery timings are great.I am using it with XEON HD Rom.

This is strange, I'm coming from the G2X, and these two phones are supposed to ahve the same screen resolution, but Nexus with a better screen type (AMOLED). Then why did my G2X look better? The DPI is much more noticeable on the Nexus, and that isn't a good thing.
I've found that the stock CM9 Nightly's are the best for me so far with the stock kernel, I can adjust the color levels to get rid of the washed out look and go for the deeper colors.
I'm going to check out your Xeon ROM, anything with HD in the title sounds good right now.
Also, which Kernel/ROM allows the color hacking? I've flashed 3 different kernels along with the cm9 v7 and this is what I've found.
-CM9 Nightly v7 default kernel - YES
-CM9 v7 with Trinity - NO
-CM9 v7 with Matrix - NO
Best ROM ive tried so far has to be DaXmax's Kangyultra-EX 1.3. Awesome battery and great performance. I also use the INK Kernel...

Read about Pentile Matrix OLED screens. You get excellent (pixel turns off) blacks, however rather than a typical 3 (RGB) subpixels per pixel, you get a pattern of RGBG subpixels instead. You will notice imperfections as a result of this and other OLED downsides. The SGS3 and GN also have similar displays though at 720p resolution. The SGS2, however, has an RGB SAMOLED (aka SAMOLED+). LCDs on the other hand have rock solid colour reproduction, essentially always RGB configurations and no uneven colour/backlight wearing at the loss of perfect blacks.
Also, just about every kernel besides Trinity should allow colour manipulation through the Voodoo app (i think it's voodoo sound) from the play store.

Thanks for the assistance, my eyes will get used to this screen, haha. I'm probably going to be upgrading to a Galaxy Nexus in the next couple of months any how...
I'll look further in to the color hacking thing, I was talking about in the Advanced tab in system settings for ICS. I saw that the Matrix kernel said something about voodoo colors/sound, but I didn't realize there was an app to allow me to change the settings around. That should open up the options a little more now.
I've only had this thing for about 12 hours, so I still have a lot of testing to do.
Matrix allows the gamma hack. You need to grab Voodoo from the Play Store to do so.
*edit. Seems you've got the hang of it. Xda app didn't load the last few responses for some reason . Lol

Yea, I ain't no sucker ass noob! ;-)
I'm thinking you didn't flash super user so that's why root checker said no. You only had unlock boot loader and custom recovery.
Racream by rascarlo paired with T11 trinity kernel is the winner when it comes to the nexus s. Check out the trinity thread for info etc.
Also make sure you pick up voodoo controls from the market to adjust color and full control over the awesome wolfson dac (read: awesome sound quality) in the NS
Voodoo color only works for kernels with it enabled. Trinity is not one of them. Morfic uses his own presets that you can't adjust with the app.
Some custom roms along with their own stock kernel allow for tweaking of the colors but only through their own settings. They do the same thing with the sound. Speaking of a rom and its default kernel.

If you didn't fix your problem yet, I had this same issue when I first tried to root it. I eventually flashed the newest super user through my recovery, and it was verified as rooted. hope you fixed your problem anyway.
If you like cm9 so far... I'd Highly recommend RemICS UX rom... has a lot of sgs3 tweaks to it too...
For kernel, AirKernel is great unless you use/need 4G (which u don't since u don't have sprint version)... personally had great results on performance and battery with that kernel... unfortunately for me, I had to find an alternative to Air because I rely on my data connection for my home internet... so that 4G issue it has forced me to reluctantly switch... currently on Trinity and this kernel is amazing an the colors are spectacular!!! Hope this post was helpful

Thanks for the input and yes I am rooted the way I'm supposed to be now.
I'm using RemICS at the moment, with the Matrix kernel and voodoo colors which I like better than the Trinity stock colors. I like my whites to be white, NOT have a slight tint of yellowish colorization that the Trinity kernel comes with.
But yea, I have the Tmobile version, but I use WIFI a lot at home, so I should stay away from Air even if i'm on WIFI? I'm not using Air, but I'd just like to clarify.

Stock ROM vs PA

Hello guys.
Can any one tell me, who used long enough both stock rom and paranoid rom, simple comparison ? Im all into speed, battery life. Im not into hybrid ui (phablet, tablet and rest...)..
Is it worth flashing the PA ?
Thanks in advance
In terms of speed and battery life they're pretty much equal. The real beauty of PA is the features and how it makes using the phone much nicer (not to mention the calibrated screen).
Battery life is about the same, speed is a bit higher (as if the phone wasn't fast enough before) with bionic krait optimizations. Battery and speed have much more to do with the kernel as well as the rom so you might want to look into that. People just want to flash the best rom or best kernel but its down to personal preference meaning there isnt such a thing.

If you aren't into the hybrid settings then why flash pa? Might as well just flash cm or aokp rom instead. You will get plenty of features that way.

You can always flash a kernel on stock and get most of the speed optimization.
newsiet serve
PA over Stock..
-Per App Customization at it's best.
-Per app colors for Navbar and Status bar is great.
-Per App full screen mode especially useful for games.
I could not find any difference in battery life and you always have option to change your kernel
I like the battery life that you get on stock, but the lack of features is what keeps me from running it. I don't like the standard toggles, no fast charge option and gamma control.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using Xparent Cyan Tapatalk 2
I think flashing all the roms available for the N4 is worth it.
You can always install PA rom and run as it is. You don't have to use the hybrid mode and other customizations. It's optional.
I received my N4 back in December, ran stock for about a month and it was nice but featureless. I then flashed PA and did not like the UI, couldn't get used to it. So I was using BakedBean and loved the ROM, mainly because it is all blacked out. Speed and battery life were great on that ROM. Then about a month ago I flashed PA again and noticed how vibrant everything looked, then flashed their contrasty kernel and was amazed yet again by the colors. I learned more about PA and have been a loyal follower since the beginning of March. I first I just used it as is and then started using PIE and I will never go back to any other ROM, unless I am bored and just want to flash something but that usually lasts for less than 6 hours before I restore my PA nandroid. I am getting about 14 to 17 hours on battery and 2 to 3.5 hours of screen on time, which is perfect for me. As someone mentioned in a post above mine it really is up to you to decide what is best for you. Flashing ROM's is so easy that you can flash a few different ROM's and test them yourself.
Good luck
Thank you all for you answers. When i asked about this rom i was automatically thinking of flashing franco or other custom kernel.. I think ill give it a try with PA...
I hope that PA doesn't have any bugs ?

Android user since more than 2 years with now owner of my first Nexus, needs tips to

Hello guys, I have just bought a Nexus 4 and I'd really apreciate your help as I want to become a more advanced Android user.
I've installed 'PA' as my first 'custom ROM', which many Nexus 4 users recommended me. And I quite like it. Though I don't really see much use of Hybrid properties! I mean I quite like the ROM/UI as it is by default. The other feature being 'Pie controls' which I really don't find handy enough and don't you think it slows down the reaction time I mean it's gesture based! (long clicking then gesturing the finger towards desired key takes more time ). The one feature I liked the most is 'Halo'. It's sheer beauty of Android UI and multitasking.
I've installed Franco's kernel. My previous android phone had locked bootloader so I'm not really familiar with the kernel thing. Still I am quite surprised that it doesn't have much governors and I/O schedulers which I was familiar with because of XDA.
I've flashed the animation mod. Though PA comes with Awsome Beats I flashed NexusLouder soundmod but I don't really see any difference. (Please tell me what I'm doing wrong)
So can you guys tell me your fav Custom ROM + Custom Kernel formation with your average screen on time?
Any specific mods I should try out?
Any Nexus related tips and tricks?
Should I underclock and/or undervolt?
Any not so popular but very interesting apps?
Thank You in advance!

Hey congratulations for your nexus haha
There's already a "which rom is everyone using" thread under "nexus 4 general"
There are not many "tips" you will figure out the most by yourself and there is even a pretty good FAQ on the paranoid android g+ page, they link to their page in their thread
I prefer faux kernel never had any problems but that's a matter of taste if you know what underclocking over clocking and undervolting is you will figure out yourself what you need as a daily driver and what isn't for you.

For someone who has never owned a Nexus device, I say this. Give it some time to soak in. Enjoy the 100% stock experience on amazing hardware.
Personally I find it strange that android users simply default to installing a custom ROM on a brand new device. Stock has come a long way. Give it a go before taking the leap into your capable device
(Maybe it's just me though)

I would advice you to try SentinelRom with its stock kernel. I heard it provides most longlife battery.
Then try to use it with Semaphore kernel

Ah then I apologize. I've seen quite a few people who just ignore stock out of the box and go straight to flashing a custom ROM.
I prefer AOKP (official) because, toggle setup and navbar height; Faux kernel for some mild undervolting, sound enhancements, and color adjustments. I keep everything else as close to stock as possible.

Well I have used Franco's kernel and I liked the way it changed my screen quality and I used to get 5 hours of screen on time which was sufficient. Haven't tried Faux's kernel yet but I have been told that Faux and Franco share some kind of rivalry. How is Faux's kernel different from Franco's? Is there any other kernel which takes good things from both the kernels?

[Q] 4.3 colour calibration on 4.2?

I noticed that in 4.3 the default colours of my screen were 100x better than in 4.2. They were so good that for the first time I didn't have to use a custom kernel for colour calibration. But it turned out most of the 4.3 ROMs out there were so buggy that I had to go back to 4.2.
At the moment I'm using Franco's kernel but the included colour tools are bad because applying more saturation also adds contrast which makes grays look way too dark. Now I'm wondering if there's a way to import the colour calibration from 4.3 kernels to 4.2? Or if there's a better tool to modify the colour calibration.

If you use TricksterMod it has an option to set 'LCD Color Presets' for some rom, although I don't think its available for stock, but you can still manually tune the colors and save it as a profile. I'm using CyanogenMod right now and it has presets for "Google, LG, and Paranoid Android".
I think you should look for a stable 4.3 rom instead.

Ever since I flashed Franco r193 my screen brightness is F'd

I flashed franco's kernel as my first "custom" kernel, but as soon as I rebooted I noticed that it was waaay to bright, my app colours weren't as nice anymore, just over saturated basically (i'm on lowest brightness). I have no idea how to fix it and it's hurting my eyes. Any help?
cheers
Install Franco kernel updater and change the color profiles till you find something you like.
I prefer the g47 personally.
