Helly Bean 4.1.2 with a Marmite kernel is what I have been running for the past 2 months.
Stock 4.1.2 lags. So in February, I went to:
-->4.2.2 has lag and a lot of stuff I do not like (lock screen swipe camera, slow lock/unlock, alarm, camera UI).
So I went to 4.1.2 (Marmite kernel):
--> CM 10 is slow, and lags
--> Slim Bean 4.1.2 is great! But the battery is horrendous
--> Helly Bean 4.1.2, just about perfect. Good battery life (although I don't like it, it's probably the best the Nexus S can do). Great performance and features.
One app I think aids in my current performance is Greenify. It has great reviews, and is probably also contributing to my phone's experience.
If you are trying to find the smoothest/fast/good battery life/reliable/best ROM combo, try out: Helly Bean 4.1.2 + Marmite kernel + Greenify.
Hi guy, I'm testing your advice. What type of Marmite kernel should I use ? I've downloaded "marmite_v8.7cm_bigmem", is that good ? Thanks by advance

Yes it's the best for Nexus S the cm or cm bigmemorie are cool, they work well with all cm based 4.1 roms. When I miss 4.1's stability I either go back to blackBean 6 or Slim rom 3.1 is the latest 4.1 slim rom (BB6 is non-cm so use the latest simple Marmite kernel, slim 4.1 versions are cm). Helly is one of the best but I can't live without renaming the Carrier lalbel, or 3g & sd card speed hacks
have you tried cm10 stable?i am using it with stock kernel(and even a theme) and i got no lag at all. I was never a fan of CM, but cm10 stable is really good with stock kernel, i didnt even change it

Yeah, Slim's battery life is horrible..?? I only get around 4 1/2 hours of screen time with a solid 24hrs with moderate use and around 2 1/2 hrs screen and 48hrs with light use... With Marmite 8.7 bigmem... Though I agree Hellybean is good, Slim is better..

Are we talking Slim Bean 3.1 (4.1.2) here? Or Slim Bean 4 (4.2.2) here?
Because when I was on Slim Bean 3.1, I tried many different kernels as well, but my battery life was horrid. I could barely make 8 hours. For example, I turned the GPS Navigation on, and it drained 1% every 2 minutes. So in 30 minutes to my destination, I was already down 15% battery life! Compared to my current Helly Bean, it's probably more close to 5-6% loss, which is much better. Also, on Slim 3.1, I would experience great overnight drops in battery life while the phone is idle - close to 10-15%. Now, on Helly Bean 4.1.2, I experience similar battery drain as stock rom - close to 1-2% per hour.
EDIT: On second thought, maybe I contributed to that a little bit. I didn't have Greenify at that time, and also I didn't turn off Wifi/3G at times like I do now.

Helly bean 4.2.2 best rom in all ways hope 4.3 is even better..
Hellybean 4.3 seems to be running smoother/faster for me than previous versions, but so far my GPS, text-to-speech, keyboard and screen rotation is not working, so you might want to hold off on it until those issues are fixed!
Carbon v1.8 and marmit 8.7bigmem perfect combo here
more stability

It feels much faster en everyting is reacting more directly, so if i was you i would
give it a try!
Dorimanx is advanced and tweaked Tytung R14. You like things basic and stable, choose Tytung. You like to explore new world and see the capability in the future, choose Dorimanx. BUT, please test by yourself to find the stable Dorimanx for you.
Depends on Rom...But i use http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1408237 for android rom
Yesssssss
Sent from my GT-S5660 using Tapatalk
Dormanx's kernel has better power consumption and is based of a newer source and is updated regularly so you can inform dorimanx of any bugs and he will fix it, whilst tytung's kernel is not updated regularly and sometimes faces 60ma power consumption and random reboots while using a network heavy application.
No offense is meant
Please correct If I am wrong
I found precisely the opposite. Dorimanx's kernel gave me high battery drain with WiFi on and was far less stable than Tytung's. Once I flashed Dorimanx's kernel I got the occasional freeze and FC, never happened with r14.The phone itself felt no different in terms of responsiveness etc.

I use wifi all the time i dont have any cell service and my drain on standby is 2mah you must have something running in the background constantly . plus i streamed pandora for like 4 hours non stop with the screen off and my battery still lasted until 11 PM with 11% left .
Warrenb213 takes over from Tytung for a stable option. Built from a newer source. Low battery drain.

I would say Dorimanx 4.1
downloading and testing mode of dorimax 4.1... im using MIUI v6.0 by langthang... kernel is under observation, checking performance and let see if i can see any bugs and laggs...
#tytungs r14 is most stable all-around kernel, perfected and polished.
#dorimanx 4.1 is a powerhouse, extremely potent and blazing fast, but a bit unstable.
Make sure kernel is compatible with your ROM!

You have to search the stable dorimanx kernel, some versions are fast and stable. v3.2 and v3.8 are 2 of them. I used 3.2 for a long time, and now 3.8 since some days. Had problems with 3.9-4.1, freezing OS/app.
You find all versions at dorimanx.com.
Now i conclude.. im using miui v6.0 by langthang, i install dorimax 4.1 last night.. fast, good performance in all apps that i opened but unstable.. i encounter missing icons, missing messages, and some reboots.. that's my opinion! And now back to tytung R14..

Dorimanx set the voltages to the limits to save battery. That's why some more people have the same problem like you in the dorimanx kernel thread. Some have raise the voltages manually and all is running without problems.
Try the dorimanx 3.8, it's running stable and fast.

Sent from my Nexus S using Tapatalk 2
It's most likely not a ROM issue. I tried Adams and CM10 and had similar battery life. Make sure you turn off google now (just the cards that need to know your location constantly). It might also be that your update didn't go that well, so you might try a factory reset. It could also be a misbehaving app, so when you do a factory reset, maybe test the ROM before restoring/reinstalling your apps. Also, the more information you give us the better we can help. Good luck!

Thanks for the info. I installed the stock factory image 4.0.4 and then waited for the official OTA. I updated and all works well, but I get around 15 hrs on a full charge with some Whatsapp and Facebook use. When I use it more intense with more screentime the battery drains the most. I think a factory reset wont give me more battery life then this, but I know my drain was not so big while I was on ICS.
By the way, which one is the most stable; CW10 (That chocolate river one??) or Jellybelly?

Sounds weird. But also keep in mind that there are still some apps that don't cope very well with JB, and Facebook has never been Androids best friend . But it doesn't make sense that it's only during screen on, most people report issues related to google now and apps doing **** in the background. If you want to switch ROM anyways, I suggest you use Adams Jellybelly, it's mostly stock (less features means less that can go wrong) and it includes thalamus kernel, which is IMHO the best JB kernel at the moment. I do not recommend any CM10 based ROMs if you're after stability. I assume you checked your battery stats and didn't find anything?
Edit: Chocolate river was abandoned when official OTA came afaik, so definitely Jellybelly . Make sure you do a full wipe though, if something's wrong dirty flashing isn't worth it.

Sounds good to me. Downloading Jellybelly now. I checked my battery stats and didn't find anywhing weird. I dont have much apps installed so there is not much that could give issues. When I leave my screen off (at night or while working) the battery life is not that bad. It's weird, but JB is still very fresh and new, so I'll just try some other roms =)

BUT, I do have Google Now activated. So really make sure to deactivate if you do not need it.
IMO all ROMs should give similar battery life.

R: [ROM][4.2.1] Official Cm10.1 monthly for Nexus S & Nexus S 4G
any feedback?
i flashed this rom over xylon rom, based on cm10.1
no issue or problem.
I'm on this ROM from yesterday (full wipe), with stock CM kernel.. no issues so far.. Only one Trebuchet FC, but probably was my fault..
BatteryLife seems normal, no drain etc..
Everything work good, and smooth enough for a 4.2 rom.. but too many animation ...
I give you some feedback using this ROM as my daily driver..
Put the M release on last night. Using marmite 7.2.3. Works well, smooth and battery life seems ok.
Installed it straight over the top of the CM 10.1 nightly i was on.
Will try marmite 7.3 sometime soon, but had a few issues with that for battery life on the recent nightlies.
Many thanks for this ROM CM people.
Just as an aside, i had a horrible time with the phone over the last few days. Not sur what happened but it wouldn't boot past the bootloader, and somehow i lost the recovery (TWRP). Had to go back to the factory 4.1 version and rebuild the lot from there. Then it all happened again.
Finally worked out why, apart from me being an idiot. I had used Titanium Backup to load apps and settings back after an update, and they were backups of 4.2 apps, not 4.1. So, rebuilt from scratch on 4.1, got a nandroid backup of that. then built from scratch on a CM10.1 nightly from December that i knew was good and reinstalled all apps and settings manually. Much cursing and gnashing of teeth.
battery drain is very very slow.
I lost only 2% after 9h in stand-by mode. with others roms ithe minimun was 6%.
Keep in mind that this is the first 4.2 ROM i've installed:
I'm facing the AndroidOS 50% battery drain sometimes... Yesterday this value was 45-50%; today, after a full charge and a reboot, the value is 7-10% (Stock CM Kernel)..
I've noticed that even with other ROMs and Kernels on 4.1.. probably it is related to apps installation and first launch.. so not a real issues...
Two minor "aesthetic-personal-issues":
- "clear all recent apps" is in the top-right corner, totally invisible when more than 3 apps are running, hope CM team will set it on the top left or leave the decision to user...
- sometimes is hard to know if some "toggle" in user bar are ON, OFF or inactive (like WiFi On but not connected, Gps etc).. probably this needs some work2do to clarify the behaviour of this tiles... or maybe it is just personal taste...
And I hope that in future they add the option to set 4 or 5 tiles per rows in user bar...
Battery life is not different from CM10 or other 4.1 ROMs...
I just had a literal nightmare with this rom. While I was just swiping through the desktop with the phone charging suddenly everything started to black out. What was scary was how gradual it was happening i almost thought my phone is going to explode now or something lol. Didn't help the fact that I was using the phone at night in pitch darkness.
Took out the battery immediately and rebooted just fine for now. I updated from cm 10 stable without wipe as i was prompted for an ota update.

I think that this is related to some background operation that slow down the device..
After trying for several months Android 4.1.2 official, I decided to go back to version 4.0.4 is the cause of the battery that doubles in the case of ICS, the aesthetic advantages Jelly Bean does not cover the disadvantages in battery life.

really anything in the order of 10+ hours (ish) depending on if you use your phone or look at it lovingly on your desk is more than reasonable.
Be happy xda'ers
I know this probably isn't the best place to ask this, but my other half's S2 has just been updated to stock 4.1.2 and she is getting horrendous battery drain.
The phone is fully stock (never been rooted, no custom recovery etc), is there anyway she can downgrade back to 4.0.4 without losing all of her apps & personal data?
I don't really have any experience with Samsung phones, I am a Nexus user so I do have a usable knowledge of Android & hacking.

I have to agree with the battery difference on JB..
On average I get around 3 hours screen on time, on ICS I get around 4.5.
No shocker as it's pretty much in the beta stages.

I myself found TouchWiz ROM having better battery life. I do a lot of tweaking on aosp, probam, paranoid, but still found battery life is not so good. I tried custom kernel with undervolt. It doesn't really improve too much battery life. My sot target is 6 to 8 hours.
