[Q] (Q) Samsung Galaxy S4 Storage - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am noticing something on my GS4. When I connect to the computer I see 1.7 GB free on my phone storage (out of 8.9 GB), when I look in the storage section in the phone says 1.7 GB free (out of 8.9 GB), when I look in applications manager I see 5.3 GB free, Titanium backup shows that I have 1.84 GB free (out of 9.57 GB).
Which ones would you suggest is most accurate, and why the discrepancies.

There are two methods of measuring data sizes on disks
1000 x 10e3*bytes or 1024 x 10e3*bytes
Some programs use one or the other.
It's confusing
Kinda like the difference between a US gallon and an Imperial(UK) gallon.

It's actually 15,6GB, and some of it is used by the system I guess. Also there is no 3.1 yet. If you took a minute to read this forum you would have found out it will be released in a couple weeks.
3.1 has not been released yet for this tablet. Anywhere. Part of the 16gb is used for system partitions.

12.58gb total sounds about right for internal storage. Mine (from USA) shows 12.51gb total. (It was the same a month ago too.) The rest of the internal storage is used for the system, boot, recovery flexrom and cache partitions. cache alone is about 1.2gb. system is 800mb, so that's about 2gb already.
Do you have a 16gb micro sd card installed? Perhaps you had seen the total from it (should be around 14.91gb total) and confused it with internal storage?
Mine 27.46GB for 32GB A500

The device has 16GB of flash that has 2GB partitioned for the "system" and the other 14GB are what you see as the "sd". Why they call it sd when it's not an sd card but soldered on flash is beyond me.
If you've ever looked at all the little partitions that you have to write to a device to recover it with nvflash you'll see where it all adds up and eats up a couple gigs of your drive. Also, running a mount and df from adb shell or a busybox shell will show you the mount points and size/free space of the partitions.
not to split hairs, but it's an SSD that we have!

Where does my storage space go

Hello
I have a question.
I looked at my storage space today (in settings) and it shows as 16gb used and 11gb free. But i dont have apps that large.
So my question is. Is this an error or when its not what uses so much storage space?
I looked trough my apps and none uses enough storage to fill this much space.
What did i overlook?

Do you have the 32GB or 16GB model? Also, which section are you looking at?
I have the 16 GB model, so my "Internal Storage" section reads 12.51GB total space. The graph breaks it down as 4.55GB of media files and 0.49GB (500MB) for applications, with 7.47GB remaining free space.
Unfortunately, you have not provided near enough information for us to assist effectively. More detail please.
Google map takes 256 mb itself and can grow with cache .
Sent from my A500 using Tapatalk
Its the 32 gb model
The 16 gb used are just applications. 700MB for media and 11 gb free.
So the space adds up correctly to the 32 gb version
But i have only like 35 apps installed. Most of them i have on my phone too
I looked under applications and none of the downloaded apps (even with data and cache) are big enough by themself or summed together to fill 16gb. Did not look trough all app that came preinstalled though.
So i am wondering where the storage space goes.

Biggest problem with the 16GB G2 is...

Size! only have about 10GB available (pity there is no way to get into that other 6 gig) so after doing a nadroid (4gig) and Titanium backup (1 gig) with apps and things I'm left with only about 2 gig for movies etc which equals 2 movies at most, so yes size is the biggest issue, thats one of the reason I want to go over to CM or SlimKat (when they have stable builds... tried SK RC1 yesterday but its very 'buggy' kept freezing and rebooting my phone), cos the ROM size difference is quite big with stock based roms you can get away with about 1 gig, with CM/AOSP roms you can get away with about 300mb which is a nice space saving especially when space is limited like it is on the 16 gig G2.

You still won't have the full 14 gigs...
www.meenova.com
You can always go for usb host and those tiny micro usb flash drives.
But i agree, 10 gigs from device that cost so much is just horrendous
It could be possible to resize the internal partitions eg system, data etc but obviously a lightweight rom would be needed.

What's your maximum available ram and how to increase it?

I'm only getting 1.58 GB and after the reboot my ram usage is like 1.31/1.58. I know it's 2GB device. So the question is why only 1.58gb can be used and how to increase it to 2.0gb? Anyone?
Cause probably the rest of the ram is used by core (not Android os) and hardware
Mine is 1.82 GB. Which is normal due to the conversion discrepancy between MB/GB.
1.82 or 1.72. Can't remember and don't want to look right now
The only way to increase it is by using swap. Either with an app like the rhoesoft ram expander (I think thats how it's wrote), or with a rom feature. But the ram you get with swap is not as fast as real ram. It will also degrade the life of the storage in that it is being stored. You can google more info about swap.
Are you sure you're reading it right? I usually have 1.2 GB ram free.
If you have 1.31 from 1.58 free then maybe you should consider uninstalling some apps. Cuz that's an unusual lot of ram usage

2000/1024 isn't 1.82. And I don't know why mine shows 1.5. That's a 300 missing. I'm on 4.4 tw.
It's just like HDD's. You buy one with 500 GB storage and when you set it up it shows only 480 GB or so.
And yes, samsung kinda ripped us off. 9 GB of internal storage is not 16! and 1.82 GB ram is not 2 GB! It's basically false advertisement what they are doing..

Galaxy Note 4 Is There A Way To Increase Internal Storage (PIT file etc.)?

[Q] Is there a method to increase internal storage (PIT file etc.)?
Hi,
I'm going to buy a Note 4 SM-910F, and I have some concerns about internal storage that runs low with many apps installed, even on relatively new phones like Galaxy S5 (16 GB internal storage). I know that Note 4 has at least 32 GB, but have any of you had a problem with insufficient storage, with let's say 100-150 apps installed? If so, is there a way to increase internal storage, like we could with the old Galaxy S2, for example flashing PIT file to repartition? Or we are just left with installing apps on SD card which will slow down their launch time?
Cheers.
I'm assuming that all Note 4 variants have 32GB internal storage. I have 167 apps installed on my phone, plus all the bloatware from ATT and Samsung.i can easily installanotger 150+ apps. I used to have an S2 and from what I remember, it had a partition set aside for app storage, which was relatively easy to fill up, but once you did, you'd still have room for files like music, etc.
Later Android versions changed how data was partitioned so that your personal files and app storage are now shared. So the Note 4 has plenty of app room, plus there is a built in feature that can transfer apps to external SD... if you ever need to.
Simply put, you have to be concerned about.
