Bah!
Just noticed the camera glass on the back on the phone has a nice crack through it... not sure how it happened as the phone has barely been used and never dropped!
Luckily it doesn't seem to be effecting the photos - but it is a bit of a worry and I don't want it getting worse and damaging the actual camera lens
Does anyone know of anywhere in the UK that I might be able to source a replacement part this early in the phones life cycle?
I don't really want to get Samsung or Vodafone to fix it as I had my S3 sent back due to a manufacturing issue and didn't see the phone for another 5 weeks!!
From what I can see in the tear down videos, the camera is quite easy to get to and the glass is quite easy to remove, so I might give it a go at home...
As for the warranty - I assume this voids it, but I can't see any security seals that would let them know this had been done, am I missing something?
Thanks for your help!
Are you sure it's a crack in the glass and not just a scratch in the protective seal? I've had some bubbles under what I assumed was the glass but it turned out I just didn't remove the plastic seal that was on the real glass.
Can't help you with replacement if it's really cracked, good luck though!

Nope, Unfortunately it's a pretty genuine crack, you can feel the two pieces shifting slightly when you gently tap the area - very frustrating

On the S3 you could remove the glass cover the lens is actually further back in the housing, try this video see if it works the same on the S4.
Cant help with a replacement part but at least you can remove it and order one espares once they become available.
Ah that's a good idea!
Before I start hacking away at it to check, does anyone have an S3 and S4 and could compare the camera housing by eye - just to see if they do look like they are built in a similar way?
Thanks for your help!

I've just looked at my S3 and it is different appears the S4 is more intergrated theirs no natural place you could get a pin to lift it away.
Hi,
I've just taken delivery of my S4 and it seems to have a screen protector pre-installed. Is that normal ? The box was completely sealed etc.
The back has the plastic which you take off all new phones but the front looks like a normal screen protector.

Everythings the same apart from the front of the phone. It doesn't have a film on it showing all the phones features, it just has a clear screen protector on it

No. It's a i9505 (EU edition as i'm in the UK). Purchased via a network contract so won't be a clone.
It's not a big deal, i was just surprised to see it, thats all.

I've just received my S4 bought in Spain. It's imported from Austria (CSC: ATO) and it's exactly in the state you descibe. Everything sealed, all plastics on the phone (including camera and frame strips). Free screen protector perfectly applied instead of regular plastic with logos. It's certainly strange but I consider it a GREAT bonus.
hello, im new here, sry my english isnt good.
Today I went to buy the s4 but in the 3 stores I went, none came with the plastic screen that says Super amolet nfc etc. It came a normal transparent screen protector. they say that the printed plastic screen that says samguns not come anymore. is true or false?
I am in doubt because they are Chinese
and do not want to buy something that is not new

Well I would not even buy if the box is not factory-plastic-wrapped
Not sure if the same applies to the newer S4's that are shipping, but when I went to get my S5 (second hand, but never opened) it came with a clear screen protector style cover over the screen. The box had never been opened and it was 100% genuine.
Maybe Samsung are cutting back on things, or they realise that using a pre-fitted, temporary screen protector is better?

Thanks for your reply, when you say that i should expect plastic wrap, do you mean on the exterior of the box, or inside the box. All the phones that i have bought here in Panama are never with plastic wrap around the box. With regards to the plastic on the screen, would you say that the newer phones might be bringing the plastic clear so they serve as temporary screen protector. Would ordering stateside be better and if so do you recommend a reputable dealer.
thanks

That's odd, I live in Costa Rica. Some stores sell without the plastic wrap around the box. But I never buy like that cuz I cannot guarantee that the device has never been used. I always buy my devices with plastic wrap around the box. I highly recommend you to do the same. Otherwise you never now if it has been damaged in any way.
I recently bought samsung galaxy s4 i9500. The device came with transparent sceen guard and it was sealed packed too. The. Ox says that it was manufactured in March 2014. I Guess now they are shipping the transparent screen protected devices.

Hi all!
Been noticing that there is a gap at the top of the phone between the glass and the metal frame. I noticed it when I make a call and my hair gets always stuck in the gap and gets pulled out
Just wondering if anybody else has this issue and will it not be waterproof at all? And should I take the phone back?
Thanks!
i'd take it back without question and don't leave the store (if you do it instore) until you have a phone with no gap
Mine is on the bottom.

On that, mine doesn't have this issue. Thank God. My ocd would never alow it!=)

correct, I got the 2 mixed up. I have no problem with either issues also but I do read a lot of light leak on all different forums.
I got no gap but feel that top frame is not straight. Feels bit curved from side left to side right. Almost non distinguishable but people with ocd can obviously spot it. I need s7 edge technical drawings to confirm it. If it's design or phone fault.
Can you post a picture? Mine has no visible gap, but I do know that the hair thing has happened to me on other phones. Also, the glass to metal frame will never be perfectly flush, but it shouldn't be noticeable.

Here some pics. The top and the right side is all gap! In the left top corner you can see my hairs sticking out... and you can see the paper pieces go pretty deep and its thick paper.
The bottom and left side is ok, no gaps.
What you guys think?

Have the same issue, but only on the sides. Had it with 3 phones now, and will get a final replacement when a new batch is out.

So this is a true defect? and they will have to replace it? When do you think a new batch is out?
Soon I'm gonna have a bold spot close to my ear, cuz it's pulling my hair out

Well the shop where I bought it has a really good service record (coolblue.nl. In the shop they agreed this was not OK, I opened a couple of phones in shop and they all had different sizes of gaps. So i'm not sure that the new batch doesn't have it, maybe it is OK according Samsungs margin of error.
Yeah I myself have had 5 handsets opened in CPW and all had same issues in various places. I have returned 2 myself even my one now has same issue but not as bad. I'm just living with it now because I fed up at returning handsets and dealing with crap customer service. This is how I noticed the light coming through sides in other thread.
Can't imagine the phone still being water resistant with those gaps. Came across this video

I have same problem too. #Indonesia
I wish if you have a normal version didn't same with mine; help to make video upside LED notificaion when LED notification is on.
Thanks
I can't even get a single piece of paper in mine, so there's definitely an issue with yours, if you can.

Okay Thanks for your information.
Please help me to make a video to show bezel gap problem, and upload it to youtube. Samsung Indonesia really make me mad when showing the problem they said that's normal. Yeah i know samsung will run away from problem. So my job is find other guys using GOLD (my version) or any other colour that doesn't have the gap issue. (I'm waiting until 10 post to posting youtube link )
Thanks

I'm afraid it's defect. Mine too; but sadly customer services saying this normal and samsung fans boy said that too. I'm seeking video a normal version of galaxy s7 edge showing normal (no gap between metal frame & glass). Mostly gold version is defected. I'm waiting for samsung next response after explain how come light pass between bezel & glass. (Stupid samsung they should put BLACK glue between frame & glass)
Thanks

Post the youtube code, the part after the '=' in the URL and I'll edit the video into your post.
Guys I don't think that's actually a light bleed. It's more like a reflection of the light from the glass to the metal frame. My glass has zero gaps at one of the sides and very small ones at the other side - well it has equal amount of light reflection from both sides.

Just like the title says. If I tap the back of my S8+ with my fingernail, it sure as hell doesn't feel like glass.
Anyone else agree?
Noup it's glass, your tap test is useless, since it has more to do with what's behind the glass and how it is placed in the case.
Here's a scratch test, that will tell you what it is actually made of (different materials scratch at different pick hardness. In simple words. You can't scratch glass with paper):
https://youtu.be/w_dTXKhFWtE
When I tap near the top or bottom edge, the sound is somehow firmer, than when I tap in the middle? There it's just plasticky, or hollow inside. Is it normal, or is it just mine? It's making me crazy, and for the life of me I can't find a video or anyone talking about it.
Thanks in advance,
Predrag

Thanks for that. I bought it five days ago, and never paid much attention, until I heard that my broken Xiaomi Mi5 sounds firmer on the back glass than a 700€ Samsung. I'm taking it tomorrow back, and asking to show me another example of it. If it's the same, I'll be really disappointed at Samsung. Not because it really matters, but because at that price point things like that just shouldn't exist. Man I am annoyed....

It's a floating piece of glass attached only at the edges. What did you expect?
Is this honestly an issue? Really?
We really must be living in an utopia if this is the kind of thing that keeps people awake at night nowadays. [emoji1] (I'm am asshole, I know)

I get your meaning and I appreciate it. And I would wholeheartedly agree with you, if not for the fact that a plastic J5 that I use for work sounds firmer and better/fuller than S8 on the back, and it's a floating piece of real plastic attached only at the edges as well. In fact, I'd rather expect J5 to survive submerging than this one. The screen feels like glass, the back does not. The problem is that I think it wasn't that pronounced when I first unboxed it. I can't be sure however.
On the other hand, I definitely want a 700€ feel on a 700€ phone. This is not being spoiled, it's that If I'm paying for the S8 for the next 6 months, i want an S8 and not Xiaomi. In other words, i want to feel happy that I spent 700€, I don't want to feel tricked.
So, here it is what i mean. The sound can't be heard very well because of the lousy J5 camera, but the wobbling is clearly seen.
Is it everyone's that wobbles this much in the middle or just mine?

I have the s8+ and i do not have this wobble you mention. tapping shows it seems hollow around the centre but i expect this as the back glass is secured around the edges where it is solid. It's the same with my s6.

Oh wow. I retract what I said. Mine is very sturdy compared to that. No wobble at all. Just seems "less solid than a solid ingot of glass". I can kinda hear a bit of hollow space behind the glass, but that's stretching it.
Yours seems defective. Very much so.
Sent from my SM-G950F using Tapatalk
yeah yours is definitely not right. there is no give in mine at all. it sounds hollow in the middle but that is all. return yours
Yeah, today's exactly 7th day since I got it. I'll have to do it tomorrow because of work, and it's gonna be a darn ordeal convincing Telenor that it's a defect.
The procedure is they'll send it to a certified repair service, I'll get some junk replacement and probably gonna get it back 2 weeks from now at best. I'll have to see if I'm able to pull some strings so that I at least get a new device afterwards and not the "here we repaired it" same one, as my company is one of their important (lol) clients.
"Certified service partners" are very protected here, as opposed to consumers.
I'd like to have with me an example of a proper one, though. Or a video...
A question. Our company's technician says that he saw all the tests about s8 as he wants to buy it, and that the back glass has to be bendable, so that in case of breaking it doesn't shatter to pieces, but remains composite. It sounds plausible enough, but why the screen is not as bendable as the back, it's the same G5 glass?
Could it be that you guys check on different lighting conditions if it bends a bit? In the video I made I barely pressed the back at all.
I don't want to go through the whole return procedure just to get it back with the same explanation. It would mean a lot to me.
Thanks in advance
I had the silver one and it was for sure glass but now I have the all black and im pretty sure it's plastic

There is no way I assure you if its a legit device it was glass That is part of the advertisement specs and all.Only option was sprint was selling clones or it was a refurb with a aftermarket back witch is highly unlikely as even Company's like Assurion use glass backs
Now the glass will have some flex to it not much I wouldn't suggest bending or such.
If its not real glass its either been replaced or said above
