Many rumors are suggesting that google is making the next version of android work very well on low end devices.
"Our sources left us with some more info regarding the OS. Android 5.0 will be an optimized OS and will run well even on devices with 512 MB of RAM."
Read more: http://vr-zone.com/articles/exclusi...ll-be-well-optimized/36950.html#ixzz2WYEGklYs
So if that is the case then wouldnt google update the nexus S? I mean if google cant make their own device with 512MB ram run it well then it doesnt inspire much confidence that they really optimized the OS well does it?
I know nexus S has fewer and fewer users everyday but I think google should do it to set a benchmark for low end devices.
Google said they won't be releasing anything new for Nexus S and that their support for it ended with Android 4.1

But if google is releasing an android update optimized for low end devices then it kinda doesnt make sense.
Android 4.2 uses alot of ram and it made perfect sense that the nexus S didnt get it.

Ofcourse ofcourse I'll be quite interested in it if this really is true about the next version of android. Right now I am on CM10 and am not going to update to 4.2 again as it was a horrible experience.
I really don't think anyone would turn back to a 3 year old phone to update on it. It's counter-productive.
Hope next version of android is indeed lighter on memory but I don't put much faith in it.
Companies need to sell hardware' you know.
They fullfilled their promissed 18 month software support, so i think no, Nexus S probably won't get another official update from Google.

Well, maybe they officially don't make an update for our phone, but if they're building an OS for 512 MB phone users there is a possibility for the NS to live for over 2 years more, using that ROM. In case they won't release that in official ways, we can always install android 5 (if this is the name) and continue using it, more than 4.2.2 that is too espensive for the Ram

I think the remaining ram to 512 is reserved for GPU or something like that.
Guys
As great as the Nexus S is\was getting 4.3/5.0 will be a bonus. It is probably time to move on.

What do you think, will the Google Nexus One get the love of Ice Cream Sandwich from Google officially?
If not from Google directly, I have no doubt someone at some point will ROM hack it for the Nexus One.
I wonder if the N1 will have enough system space to handle ICS initially. I'm sure someone will eventually figure out some sdcard trickery that will make it work either way. The sdcard on my Xoom with Honeycomb 3.2 works very differently than on the N1 and apps must use the Android MediaStore API to detect everything. My guess is there will be some app growing pains around this bit like there has been with the tablet apps.
Nexus S isn't much more powerful than Nexus One. Nexus S will get ICS, so nexus One too
Both will get... Why? Becuz our phones are under Google... So we might be getting otas from google... By the time it releases...

I would be more concerned with whether they drop to AOSP quickly, like they did with froyo.
The last i heard Google already confirmed Nexus One will get ICS since theres no hardware requirement anyways...

I heard the same news too, and it came out of my ass. How about yours?
XIAOMI anounced a few weeks ago they will launch a MIUI ICS, and will continue to provide support to other devices.
as of GRK39F /system has only 15MB available, so I don't think the N1 will get it officially. We'll have to wait to see if they can fit it in 145MB but I don't think so.

They could have at least twice that amount of space to work with if they drop the frequently unwanted bundled apps like Twitter, Facebook, and Books. If I want them I know where to get them.
I guess it will be the same? Becuz if official cm9 is release, the rom size should be 89-94 mb....

5.0 isn't even questioned let alone 4.2. Nexus 7 will be getting updates for quite awhile. The only way Google wouldn't update it is if they decide to get all Samsung on us and reskin AOSP in PNGs made at Industrial Light and Magic

Nexus devices will always have development until the hardware can no longer handle the os. To put things in perspective, the nexus one runs jellybean pretty well, from what I'm reading.
The Nexus One got cut off by Google at Gingerbread because the system storage was only 190MB and ICS and JB would never fit on the partition. Developers got around it by resizing and creating partitions on the MicroSD Card.
Nexus S officially got 4.1.2 by Google and it's only a single core, 1ghz, 512MB shared RAM device.. Only 340MB of RAM is usable on stock kernels and it runs JB decently. Custom kernels allow it to have 407MB of usable RAM by using Big HIGHMEM.
Nexus S has been one of the best supported, best performing (considering its age) phones I've ever owned.. When I finally replace it I'm not selling it as I'm keeping it as imo it's a legendary handset.. I think 4.1.2 is the last official update the phone will see though. While JB runs decent on it, it's obvious it's pushing the limits of the phones hardware..

The Nexus 4 could be a future star, I mean I can't see Android actually needing 2 GB RAM & quad-core SoC as a minimum requirement until Arm releases their V8 64-bit chips for smartphones in around 2015.

How do you figure? Android 4.2 doesn't look that different than Android 4.1 except the dual pull down notification menus, updated apps, lock screen widgets and some security features. To be honest, I've seen ICS ports done on Froyo-only devices like the LG Optimus G2x (P999) and they work fine with only a camera bug.
It won't be as clean as AOSP but performance should be pretty good. Hell, there are Nexus One devices running Jelly Bean as we speak. Google said there wasn't enough internal storage to do it but it's being done.

If Google officially supported the way the Nexus One runs JB I would go buy a Windows 8 phone tomorrow.. It's great for the adventurous end user but re-partitioning SD cards to cram an OS onto a phone would be insanity for any legitimate company to actually support as a viable means of maintaining a device.
Fact is, JB struggles on the Nexus S. It is NOT `buttery' and never has been. Is it acceptable? In most cases. But you have to look at it from Googles view.. They can't keep supporting a device that is walking the fine line between a usable consumer product or a usable toy for a tech nerd to fiddle with.
I think Google kinda forgot that the Nexus was somehow a developer phone. Who cares about photosphere and facelock consumer crap?

Although JB does run on a nexus one, it's not particularly fast or smooth. It's there mainly to prove it can be done and because people like a challenge, but it's not particularly usable.
We don't actually know what's new in the core of 4.2 and if the NS can actually run it, until someone ports it. We may end up having the same problem as the Galaxy S. Samsung didn't officially update it to ICS because there simply wasn't enough RAM left after installing TouchWiz. I don't like to say it, but the Nexus S is kind of at the end of its life (update-wise).
Some of the features in 4.2 would be nice....the new camera app, quick settings...and we'll probably get them, but through a custom rom.
Just want to see folks predictions about this really. How long do you think it will be before Google will leave it behind?
Nexus One: April/May 2010 - October 2011 (No offical update to 4.0+ )
Nexus S: December 2010 - October 2012 (No 4.2)
Really the Galaxy Nexus will be the next to feel google dropping support of OTA but how long does the N7 have? July 2012 - 2014/15?

I think about 2014, we do still have devs also updating some faster then google. This is the first offical google ONLY device made by google, any cellphone has the overlay of the manufacturer. Looking at android versions, the Galaxy nexus could even be dropped at the next android release; it seems they're speeding up their android releases.
Which means maybe the next version of android might be the N7's last, unless both JB's only counted as one...
I think they might turn the Nexus line into an iPad type thing - with N7 second generation coming out some time around July. All just guessing though...
No idea. Personally I'm not too bothered about big updates to Android coming sooner - it would be better if Google worked more on bug-fixing - I'm sick of the media server bug, the less than advertised battery life etc on 4.2. They should also focus on getting developers to make more tablet optimised apps, unifying the Android experience (it really annoys me when an app has loading circle / progress bar from gingerbread etc).

It will certainly not just be one more version, I expect 5.0 and at least 5.1 updates for our device. And when support stops it will be do to the lack of RAM (really wish they crammed 2GB in this thing)
As for apps, Google publishes Android guidelines. They can't hold a gun to developers heads and make them do things. Vote with your wallet on poorly designed apps, it isn't Google's job.

Have you had any success with lollipop on your 7'12? Mine is totally useless, cannot work due to lag and freezing when on L, and I doubt M works any better. The '12 really wasn't to last as long as we've used ours. It's still a decent tab with KK installed and not asking too much from it. I doubt M will come out way.
I agree...
I think the last usable ROMs working decently on N7 2012 where those base on android 4.4.4, so I don't even plan to try any M based ROM on it
I think there is something seriously messed up on the '12 Lollipop. It runs great after the initial boot. Hell, even with apps. Then it comes to a crawl after a few days. If you run Trim, it whips back into a performing tab for a short while again. I'm hoping to at least try Marshmallow on my '12. If there is something really messed up as I think, I hope M fixed it. My Nexus 6 runs much better on M than it did L - yes, I know different hardware but things seem more efficient from the software side.
